- This is my review of the IWC Portuguese Ref IW500705. It's a very handsome watch. I was a little concerned about the large size at first, but it ended up fitting my wrist just fine.

I caught that too....he obviously meant 30 meters, but he makes a great point....Who would ever take a watch on a leather strap anywhere near water?

Love the review! I don't have an IWC, but every time I've been to one of their boutiques, they've been amazing and super keen to let me try on even pieces that I couldn't afford. That makes a difference, especially compared to experiences I've had with other brands.

you nailed it - the Classic Chronograph Portugieser is my favourite and this Automatic with 7 days power reserve you had on your wrist. The numerals have this stunning look - especially in blue. So as it is impossible for me to get one budgetwise I check on Tissot, etc. to get a look alike and keep on dreaming ...

Absolutely wonderful watch... Although very beautiful, I would prefer this watch with a matching blue strap... (to go with the numbers). But yours is still very very beautiful man!
Great review as always Brandon. I literally laughed out loud on the "will it fit under a dress cuff? I have no idea." line. I'm with you on this watch. Stunning. Masculine. IWC movements are really really cool to look at. But 43mm is just way to big for me. 39 to 40 would be perfect on this watch. I don't even mind the price because it's that good of a watch. IWC is red hot right now.
Thanks Mike! I really liked the watch, but I agree. It’s large. I think it works well for some folks, but I prefer a more sporty watch if I’m going that large.
I wanted the Portugieser Automatic for a long time but I just could not carry the over 42mm case on my 16 1/3 cm (6.4 inches approx) wrist. Then the Automatic 40 came along and finally, I got myself a Portugieser that actually fits me. Cheers!

Surprised that thing didn’t come with a few dents/scratches/, or maybe some cotton ball size lint in the dial.......being that it’s from crown and caliber and all 😂.

While I don’t have this watch I do have an IWC Portuguese Chronograph and I have no problem wearing it casually with a Polo shirt. That white dial and clean look means you really dress it up and down within reason.
If you want that same gorgeous dial, but smaller, the IWC Portugieser Automatic 40 would be the way to go. It doesn't have the power reserve indicator, and the seconds hand indicator moves to 6 position, but it sizes at roughly 40mm case diameter, 12.5 mm height, and lug to lug 20mm.
I bought this watch in 2013 with the rose gold hands. It’s really beautiful watch. Though it’s more popular in Europe, you should check out Ulysse Nardin dual time watch in particular the limited edition one (comes in blue or black dial, I have the blue dial). Jeff Bezos has one, though his is the white dial non limited timepiece.
I wear it on a nato. I think a power reserve is especially useful for someone with different watches on rotation.

Ref.5441 is my favorite Portugieser.
Saying it's big for a reason sounds as good as saying there's plexi instead of saphire for a good reason on them modern reissues of vintage watches.
Nevertheless, I appreciated the review. It's a watch I would admire from far away.

Nice video and nice watch. When you show the second hand price you should mention age of the one your Showing and if it's full kit or not, is it still on warranty etc.... These IWC don't really fall that much, on chrono24 they average 12k newer full kit.

For american born. If you use a shirt with double calfs and buttons fo not wear a wrist watch. That will show off your ignorance of good taste dressing rules. Wear instead a pocket watch. So a watch like this one can be worn by everybody with a regular shirt. Common sense should tell you if this wach is too big for your wrist or the frame of your body. This is a gorgeous watch, I own one and my wrist of 20 mm still looks kind of bulky. But I love it I will keep no matter what. So after several disappointing estetic experiences I decided to wear it only at the office because a suit is not all the time required where I work. Great watch. I was lucky to get one from the IWC boutique that realy works like a german rail road watch. I heard some people complaining about going too slow or too fast. It may also be because they do not port them every day. Any 7 day PR watch if it is left iddle for more then 4 days it may slow down a little bit. If it goes too fast an adjustment at a IWC boutique is required. This watch is a hit. Enjoy it.
Iwc make amazing watches, I think you should try the mark 18 and the chronograph 41mm, they are more sportier and sized better. Once you get an iwc, you quickly lose interest in other watch brands.
