This is a great hard rock album, with a bit of prog thrown in. Rich Williams on guitar shines. The violin is back, YES. Sadly, in 1995, people weren't receptive to this type of album. Cold Gray Morning(written by Kerry Livgren) and Peaceful and Warm(best song Steve Walsh wrote after Kerry Livgren left)are masterpieces, these songs are just as masterful as the best of their 70s work.
This was great, Tim (and Jex). This is my favorite Kansas album (along with their classic Best of Kansas). I stumbled upon this album in the record store when it first came out. I knew nothing about it, except for the Band’s name, and decided to give it shot… a blind(ish) buy. I was also intrigued by the title and album art. I went back to the store several times over the course of a few weeks before I pulled the trigger. And glad I did.
A VERY underrated Kansas album. I saw the previous, Whiskey, tour and this tour. "The Freaks of Nature" show kicked some serious behind! I think they opened with "Musicatto" and performed "Play the Game Tonight" as well as a lot of this album at that show, if I remember correctly. Also, got to meet Ragsdale, Ehart and Williams after the show by just hanging outside The Cabaret in San Jose. I don't even remember how I got this album, it might have been Tower Records or Streetlight Records, but I did get it at a record store. Great songs on this whole album, Ragsdale was a great addition, and I figured that untitled song was just a coda to "Peaceful and Warm" because it fits it so perfectly... that fade out makes you want that coda to keep going, It's just a beautiful piece of music. Cold Grey Morning might go all the way back to the Kansas II days(Proto-Kaw) and could have been on any 70s Kansas album, but it sounds great here! I think it's also on a Livgren compilation album with Jake singing on it. It definitely would have been nice to get another studio album from this line-up before "Somewhere to Elsewhere" happened.
Yes!!! I would agree Tim this is a Top 5 Kansas release!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
An hidden gem in their discography and with Jeff glixman back in the producers chair the band has returned to their classic sound with a nice 90s edge
Great job Tim and Jex ! This album has risen to my top 5 Kansas albums recently. Thank you . Chez
I really dig this album!

It's not one of my favourites from within Kansas' catalogue but it's still a terrific listen.

The title track does sound like Deep Purple, complete with the "nas" from Hush.
