One of mother’s gifts to me was Sassy. And as my mother’s final moments on this earth fluttered heavenward from her hospital bed, all of the random jazz I’d played for her 24/7 in her room suddenly hit “Linger Awhile” by Sarah and in under two minutes, the song was gone as was mom. But never the moment. Never the song.
I am so thankful for UA-cam for allowing opportunities to see legends and leaders who I never would have got to see and hear if it wasn't for technology. Ooooooooo.....I am almost crying....Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whom ever gave "thumbs down" here, should turn in their humanity cards. This woman was and is the definition of class and grace. I wish I could have dropped rose petals at her feet, every time she took a breath.
She was dead less than 2 years later in 1990 at the age of 66. Lung cancer. Diagnosed in 1989. Weary of the treatment...the battle, she asked to be taken home where she passed on, the evening of April 3, 1990, while watching a television movie featuring her daughter. Thank you,
She was a heavy smoker as was Carmen Mcrae. Seems like lady Jazz singers of her generation have poor health late in their lives. Alberta Hunter was an exception.
I saw her perform in a smallish venue for my birthday in Miami Beach in 1979. It was memorable, you don’t often hear that level of excellence in person.
I have seen her and heard her perform this song many times. It is never disappointing, but this time is particularly moving. She was in fine voice. She would be with us for just 2 more years.
priceja70 thank you. I heard another rendition of this song, Sarah Vaunghan version offers the emotion the song deserves. What a great song, and a great vocalist to bring it to life.
I remember the first time I saw Sara at the very first Newport Jazz Festival. She sand "Maria," and, when the was finished, thousands were in numbed silence we were so transfixed and in awe... at then the burst of applause that went on for... a very ling time!
I saw ms divine at the outdoors summer park in Philadelphia she worked me too the deepest part of my soul thanks ms sassy i will always remember that joyful night
Sublime version definitive best ever Sarah Vaughan always makes me cry she gets in to classic with so much depth and extraordinary vocal beauty remember enjoying her concerts numerous times The Divine One always a thrill to experience wish those days would have gone on longer...
Mic placement is a skill Sarah Vaughan possessed that other singers too rarely appreciate. They put their mouth right on the mic like they want to give it a blowjob, and cause it to lose fine pitch gradations during loud passages. Whereas Miss Sarah's mic moves to give the sound more space to breathe, to fill space before we can hear it.
@marcelsimon9156 It's very much a generational thing -- most of the great singers of her generation had good mic technique. I worked with some of the best recording and mixing live sound -- Sarah, Carmen, Clooney, Tony, Hartman, Bill Henderson, Helen Humes, Chet. Watch videos of Sinatra in live performance (not network TV in a studio, where he's miked with an overhead shotgun). It's the rock and roll sound crew that taught the bad technique of eating the mic that is nearly universal today.
Would love to hear Sarah and Lou Rawls sing together. They looked like brother and sister and both possessed rich, fluid and lyrical voices. May they both Rest in Peace.
I love it when she goes to the low register… bring on the baritone….🎶 isn’t rich, isn’t clear….🎶 then upstairs to the high register for the finish… maybe next yeaaaaaar!🎶
It's made for an older woman to sing, look up the plot to the play it's from. I truly didn't get it until I heard her sing it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Send_In_the_Clowns
It always irritates me when it takes people 15 seconds for the words to start to register what song someone is singing/playing and then applaud. This song is easily identifiable within the first 5 seconds, and why applaud anyways?
The ultimate singer...Technique, phrasing, control. fantastic voice. What a musician.
+David Garnes I agree. Sarah got them all.
Peace!
:-)
Completely exquisite...
SHE'S BADDDD !!! ANITA BAKER brought me here. 5 stars for this lady. WOW.....
Amen!
AMEN SENTIMENT.

Bravo!
Some people just like to be critical to get attention. Its a great version.
Sarah Vaughan was the ultimate queen. I never saw this footage and, I melt, with humility, to her art once more again.
Nope. J. Collins version for me. (Partly bcs of Sarah's 'sh' sound in all the "s" words.) And I don't care for jazz. 😄
Damn right. Sarah Vaughan is a Queen. The Greatest Jazz singer EVER!!!!!❤
Simply beautiful- the tone and texture of her voice
I read someone else on UA-cam refer to her as the sculptor of song
Not only was she a great performer, but a great comedian as well. I love her sense of humor ♡
That Was That Sas About Her!! 😂💯👏🏾
I know that many people love this song ... as do I ... but Sarah sings this song and it touches my soul.... deep stuff
Love it! She was the Queen of her realm. We miss her talent. Rest I peace.

@@petermanzi9363 Cleo Laine is a non-smoker and is still here at 92yrs.
@@tomkelly4336 good news but she is an exception.
Didn't her mother outlive her? H
@@dennismclaurin1487 Not sure.
The absolute jazz singer. Starting with 4:52 the consummate diva! WOW.

Sublime... an arrow to my soul... thank you Sarah wonderful
Such a wonderful song given a new meaning by Sarah at the top of her voice
What a great singer ,what a nice personality + sense of humor!
The way SHE lives THE SONG ... OMG ... JUST AMAZING 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
I have to admit, I have never understood the full meaning of this song. But every time Sarah sings it, I almost tear up.
+Sam Pottorff if you are interested, here is an explanation of the song and the play it is from:

Just listen, that's enough, that's everything.
Even at my age I still cry when I hear this wonderful version of Sondheim's classic song.
We are never too old to cry. It is God's lubricant. He enters the heart with tears.
God sends Angels to us in many forms and ways. We were blessed this unique Lady was here for that moment in time. Keep Aiming High Always
What BEAUTY ❤❤❤❤❤❤, it makes cry every time X
The divine Mrs Vaughan. Absolutely fantastic!
This is my all time favorite. It sends chills through me.
All the greats sang it but the Divine One simply owned it! PERIOD.
Say it Frank 🎵🎤🎶🎙🎵🎷🎶🎺🎶🎹🎶
I love the lyrics of this song, I think it's just pure poetry.

Berautiful song, beautifelly sung. England, October, 2024.

Great performance. Dig her mic technique -- her voice is always there, right where she wants it. Great sound mix.

Carol Burnett did a wonderful rendition of this that is on UA-cam.
This may be like High Kitsch, but Ms Sarah Vaughan could sing a Song. Many of us will never forget how She Done IT.
I have always loved her.
Sublime!! 💓
Her voice just like leontnye price....her voice is rich to express she fell..
O tempo não passa..a beleza fica.
