I am speechless . How powerful is the mothers love. No matter what condition the child is in, she holds him whole day. Simply amazing. I pray that someday this child could be cured.

This video really shows all the struggle these people are facing. My family comes from Vietnam, so we come back every couple years, staying for a couple months each time, and Ive personally seen this go on first hand. First off, I just want to point out that this is definitely not propaganda.
This problem is something I've seen and experienced ever since first visiting Vietnam almost 20 years ago. Back then, there was so many of these children always coming up to my parents to sell lottery tickets and gum. They would flock towards us every time we got off a taxi and I remember my parents would shoo them off.
These days, there are not as much, but the drug/heroin problem in Vietnam is still very big. My cousin actually died from HIV/AIDS, from hanging out with the wrong crowd and being poor and uneducated. From what I've seen and heard from my family, kids from smaller villages run away from home to the city to find jobs, and the unfortunate ones end up in the sex trade and gangs. Its become such a big problem that when I went back this summer, there would be large bill boards warning people of the effects of drug abuse.
Another point form the video that hits home is how they're moving underground. Now, the sex industry has become incorporated into other industries like food, and service. Nowadays, there would be shady restaurants that would have skimpy girls servicing you and eat and drink with you, known to Vietnamese people as "Bia Om". Salon workers now give massages and extra services if you know where to go.
The vid also mentions the growing divide between the rich and the poor, and this is something you will see the minute you get off the plane. People in Ho Chi Minh either own a business, work within corporate, or live in the streets. Its incredibly sad seeing my country like this, and I hope one day it will become better.

Doesn't seem to end for those poor children and they're so sweet and always smiling regardless of their situation. Economy has improved or more private organisations and citizens have stepped in to help. Also more manufacturing has moved from China to Vietnam's countrysides so less people moving to big cities like Saigon. However there are still kids exploited by adults inc. their own parents but not as wide-spread as before. We should do more to help countries like VN instead of making China rich! This is a very sad story in many ways, but also one with lots and lots of hope and progress. The authorities are spot on correct about identifying the problems with street kids and they are getting better at dealing with it. The economy has expanded many fold in the last 20 years and more than anything, it's the availability of good jobs and free education that is going to get these kids out of the gutter.

Yes the "C" word. That is exactly what Ho Chi Minh wanted. In 1945 when he he wrote the new Declaration of Independence for Vietnam, it was formed partly from words that were first written in the Declaration of the French Revolution and the US Declaration of Independence. Sooner or later I'm sure Vietnam will change their government style to better handle the current needs of a multi-billion dollar capitalist economy. And I hope the entire free world helps them gracefully with this process, with kind support, because this time it will be entirely a Vietnamese decision and it will be a win-win change for all Vietnamese people and the entire world.

But u have to understand that each country got their own money, U cannot expect a European country to come and give u money? Its YOUR government that has to make a balance, coz in Vietnam, u have people who are Very very rich, and the rest is very very poor. So why cant u share more ? coz the government and rich people don't mind living that life, the poor side is not beyond their family and it doesn't matter

Some people say life in Vietnam is happy? So why are 2 million Vietnamese people leaving the country? and why are the children of the leaders of Vietnam sent abroad but not in Vietnam, is it funny?

Good question although I get the feeling you are begging it and know more than you let on. Be that as it may I offer the following.
Mission: Advance goals of US foreign policy.
Operators: Broadcasting Board of Governors, a branch of the US Government.
It's background origin was in the 50's and the anticommunist movement. I suspect the "agency" that is running this show is the same one whose predecessor in 1945 made the only sensible decision regarding Vietnam to date but were overruled.
RFA would say something different than the above.
However, problem of children on the street is a serious problem in HCMC....as it is in every major US city. There is also a serious problem of children in the their own homes in the US- state and national statistics on child abuse are horrifying. As HCMC becomes more Westernized, Western problems follow. Proliferation of fast food corporations have created a national epidemic of obesity and diabetes. Child abuse in homes and daycare centers are also rearing their ugly heads.

If you know you can't give the kid a good life than don't have sex and fart out the kid. Kids should not be made to sell things on the street to help support the stupid parents. What kind of parents take from their kids.

You offer some very legitimate points. I spent the entire month of September in HCM, Go Vap District which is considered the ghetto by Vietnam standards and I never witnessed any of the bs this documentary suggests. Thanks Freeflow for your finer points!

tragic. there is no social net to protect the disenfranchised whatsoever. but on another note, why not use birth control, perhaps? if you can't support yourself, why have kids? doesn't make any sense. the govt could do a public campaign on teenage pregnancy. too sad.

+AK H. (bufferoverflow88) I agree with you on the why have kids part. But birth control isnt something that is readily available to these people. The thing with their lifestyle is that the little money they make, they would have to spend that on food and housing. A pack of condoms will probably cost them a weeks worth of work.

+AK H. (bufferoverflow88) Sometimes the parents decide to have kids regardless of their lifestyle conditions because their kids will be a helping hand when they are older. Although when that time comes, they will still be financially unstabled, which is a problem.

I agree with you Mr. Trieu. Im now loosing all my believe for the government and the Communist party. They dont care about poor people. How painful it is to see too many children and old people working on the streets every day. I hope there will be a positive change in leaders' mind, but it may be hopeless thing.

mass rural to urban migration occurs when the ruling power 1st sets up its central government (after subduing contenders and securing the land & people) and begins looking for revenue within its borders, to stay in power and build its nation state. This is done by entering into contracts with foreign governments and corporations interested in buying natural resources from them. But first technology must be bought to extract these resources, immediately placing the government into debt, on top of all the debt it already accrued while trying to get into power (either peacefully or by armed means). But one peace is secured, business can begin, which brings in all sorts of new opportunities and wealth for the people. But even these positive aspects can have negative consequences. Like the young village girl who ran off to the city after being sexually assaulted by her father, after his wife ran off with another man, because this man became rich overnight with all the changes in the village, while the husband remained poor. So that the once respectable sharecropper became lowered in status all of a sudden, especially after his crops began dwindling due to pollution. While the previously lowly odd-job worker became a very important man by befriending and meeting the needs of the wealthy foreign workers in the new oil refinery nearby. Causing him to rise in status and desirability, and giving him choice pickings of all the females in the village. Yet he chose his former sweetheart, even though she was already married now after rejecting his proposals for marriage because of his poverty. But the sudden reversal in fortune of her former lover, along with all the other changes sweeping the village, caused her to abandon her family to run off with him. Resulting in the abandoned husband raping his own daughter out of vengeance and rage. That must be where at least one of these street children you've used to make your neat little documentary comes from....I think. Gross!
