Thanks for the cool (and apparently well-rehearsed) lecture! The picture of Capablanca in the background makes it even more intense, like the Master is overseeing the presentation of his art. Congratulations.
Kinda funny because there is a huge portrait of Capablanca staring at Jonathan which is pretty much visible at 31:09 when the board projection vanishes...
At 4:11 Johnathan says Nf6 leads to the Berlin endgame, but it's actually the main move -- the bishop being on a4 means that the regular Berlin idea doesn't work --when the knight retreats, it's not attacking the bishop anymore. But black can play b5 and get a decent position.
Wow glad to see someone wrestle with the complications in the Marshall-gambit of the Ruy Lopez. Great work! Will you also make one on the Marshall-gambit of the Triangle-setup of the Queen´s gambit? I´d like if you did. ;)
Hello ! I would like to you Jonathan Schrantz to explain the Budapest gambit, because i live in budapest, i am a hungarian person, that would be a pleasure for me and for my family ! i am looking forward to it :)
Always like your vídeos :) one question to game 2...at the end after Levon´s Qg4...why did White not play f3 to force the queens off the board? ....I know,,,,structural damage maybe, but still better than his Re1....anyways - great lessson again...greetings
I think he has it wrong at 16:25:00. When the white queen is on f3, the white queen simply takes the f7 pawn check. After the black rook takes the queen, the white e file rook checkmates the king with rook to e8.
I played the Ruy Lopez as white against a1900 rated in my club a few days ago, got a draw but it was super uncomfortable. Great vid, gonna try it out as black
I'm kind of new to chess so I'm wondering.. At 20:00, could white go Queen F4, protecting the bishop? Or am I missing something horrible that would happen to me if I went there?
while watching this went thru some lines with stockfish it may be known to many players but i still found it interesting: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Bxc6 dxc6 5. Nxe5 Qg5 6. Nf3 Qxg2 7. Rg1 Qh3 8. Rg3 Qh5 9. Rg5 Qh3 10. Rg3 Qh5 11. Rg5 Qh3 12. Rg3 the engine says 0 (like in "draw") right after the first black queen move obviously moving the queen to d4 on move 5 is better for black (-0.6 vs 000000) however if u want a draw as black u may consider the line above
Hi there! Castling is illegal when king is checked and also when a square you pass through (f1/8, d1/8) or the square you end up on is attacked by an opponent's piece.
Do the stonewall dutch at chess openings explained please. It has been played by Carlsen also, so it cant be as bad as it looks, so it would interesting to watch some analysis on the opening. Thanks.
what does it mean Sb1? i don't know the symbol "S". Do you mean Knight back to B1? I don't see how is it possible to capture the queen after that is trapped..
Sure you are right, it is trapped, but I don't see how you can take it. Looks trapped but safe. I think black can menage to free it bringing down the pawns (maybe the rooks too) before white can menage to attack it (he has to attack it with the bishop, and to do so he has to move at least 4 times, so black has here 5 moves to free himself winning a rock for his effort).
18:00 - can't black move his queen to H1 - checkmate? King can't take because of the knight, can't move because it will still be in check on H2 and F1, and white's queen is blocked by the pawn on G2?
at 38:25 White plays Queen d2. but earlier you said that Black really doesn't want to trade queens. so why does White not play Queen d1? I'm not a good / experienced chess player so hopefully I don't bother you with my question...
There is nothing wrong with Qd1. After ...Bg4 you can play the Queen back to d3 (if you want a draw) or you can play a move like Qd2. This is just a normal position with many options for both sides. Black has the initiative and White is a pawn up.
whites light squared bishop is usually too valuable, yes you got rid of their dangerous knight but you got rid of your more important defending piece, it's a trade off that is generally bad for whites in the Ruy Lopez, whites light square bishop is worth too much
I didn't know if the game is played with an illegal move its continually played, kinda like baseball you just continue to play the game with the error, no pun intended. lol I prefer this, then for people referring back to an instant that might've affected some poorly but i doubt it happens very often still.
Qxa8 Nxh3+ if bxh3 Qxe1 winning back the rock and having a position reallz bed for white. If instead Kf1 than QF4+, Ke2 Qe4+ and here on is check mate because of Bf4 and Nf2.
I hate to tell you this, but you are actually incorrect. Allow me to explain properly. The Berlin Endgame is reached after 1. e5 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. 0-0 Nxe4 5. d4 Nd6 6. Bxc6 dxc6 7. dxe5 Nf5 8. Qxd8 Kxd8 What's the difference between this and the line shown in the video? The subtle, but very important move a6 was played in the video, prepping black for b5. Also, Nd6 no longer comes with tempo against the bishop. The open ruy lopez is 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. 0-0 Nxe4 6. d4 b5 7. Bb3 d5 8. dxe5 Be6. If instead, 6. d4 Nd6? Black is no longer hitting the bishop and is therefore worse. The move a6 makes all of the difference!
the first half is pretty explained and well prepared, thumbs up, but the second one with Levons game is crap, this was not prepared at all and you would do all of us a favour - save us time and yourself blame if you would cut it... SL Chess Club still remains one of the best in my opinion and I agree that it is hard to do all posts like GM Yasser does, he is the greatest!
schrantz is a noob at 43.00 he says i dont see what white is doing noob. white wants to play f3 to force a queen trade. it wasnt possible before because if f3 then bl
That first game proves a bit of really bad life advice: It's only illegal if you get caught.
Bad?
More Schrantz.
Thanks for the cool (and apparently well-rehearsed) lecture!
The picture of Capablanca in the background makes it even more intense, like the Master is overseeing the presentation of his art.
Congratulations.
Marshall starts at 5:30
One of my favorite openings as black
Kinda funny because there is a huge portrait of Capablanca staring at Jonathan which is pretty much visible at 31:09 when the board projection vanishes...
One of bigest marsall win is in word champion game in 2004 betven Vladimir Kramnik agens Péter Lékó :)
31:57 the enthusiasm of a true chess player
true. Very true!!!
Marshall must have felt so crushed! According to Wikipedia, he was a good sport about it though.
My Favorite in my teenage days!
Schrantz, best chess teacher ever.
The Marshall attack is a gambit, it is just that there is a Marshall gambit in a different opening so we use different names.
He actually says Nxe4 leads to the endgame
How about ruy lopez marshall main line spasskey variation
26:49 Here the engine says white has a mate in 15. Marshall's defense fell short of optimal.
19:01 Marshall had a better chance with Queen-c1 taking the bishop first and then threatening white rook with b1 move
Rg6 at the end, instead of Bxf7+ sets up a windmill checkmate, no? Maybe not "best" but certainly pretty.
I love your videos! Could you do the o'kelly variation of the sicilian? It's kind of rare and is used as a surprise attack sometimes at top level.
there is a video on this channel by another lecturer and I don't think they like repeating lectures but I'd still love to see one myself :)
Wow glad to see someone wrestle with the complications in the Marshall-gambit of the Ruy Lopez. Great work! Will you also make one on the Marshall-gambit of the Triangle-setup of the Queen´s gambit? I´d like if you did. ;)

Bilbo Beutlin knight takes bishop in f3 and it is on white's queen
I wish he had acknowledged the picture of Capablanca on the wall... Isn't that him staring right over the table ?..... lol
Thank you so much for chessopeningsexplained!
Could you please do a lecture to the french fort knox variation?
Thank you for all
I'd imagine it's because in the french after dxe4 it's boring :p haha I play the french myself and hate when the centre pawns exchange
I think he has it wrong at 16:25:00. When the white queen is on f3, the white queen simply takes the f7 pawn check. After the black rook takes the queen, the white e file rook checkmates the king with rook to e8.
Im pretty sure this video last for 45min
How can we take advantage of the Bowlder Attack?
2. e6 and later you play d5
I played the Ruy Lopez as white against a1900 rated in my club a few days ago, got a draw but it was super uncomfortable.
Great vid, gonna try it out as black
I've recently got battered playing the Breyer and Chigorin as black. Time to try something different!
I'm kind of new to chess so I'm wondering.. At 20:00, could white go Queen F4, protecting the bishop? Or am I missing something horrible that would happen to me if I went there?
Qe1+ with the rooks coming in
It's probably been pointed out, but Capablanca played 14. Qf3, not 14. d4. ALSO Marshall played 32... Bb4, not 32... Be5
while watching this went thru some lines with stockfish
it may be known to many players but i still found it interesting:
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Bxc6 dxc6 5. Nxe5 Qg5 6. Nf3 Qxg2 7. Rg1 Qh3 8. Rg3 Qh5 9. Rg5 Qh3 10. Rg3 Qh5 11. Rg5 Qh3 12. Rg3
the engine says 0 (like in "draw") right after the first black queen move
obviously moving the queen to d4 on move 5 is better for black (-0.6 vs 000000)
however if u want a draw as black u may consider the line above
What would happen if 14:35, we took back with the queen? Say, Qxf7+? Oh wait that doesn't work because king takes I guess.
Love your videos. Can I add to the probably long list of requests you already have? I'd like to see Queen's Indian if possible. Thanks.
I'm new to chess and I didn't realize that "Castling" is illegal? Or is it just illegal when the king is in Check?
Hi there! Castling is illegal when king is checked and also when a square you pass through (f1/8, d1/8) or the square you end up on is attacked by an opponent's piece.
Tanks for you.
Suggestion: The Richter-Veresov Attack?
Do the stonewall dutch at chess openings explained please.
It has been played by Carlsen also, so it cant be as bad as it looks, so it would interesting to watch some analysis on the opening.
Thanks.
22:21 is it possible to play kA3 to activate the rook and maybe trap the queen (QxA1, Sb1)?
what does it mean Sb1? i don't know the symbol "S". Do you mean Knight back to B1? I don't see how is it possible to capture the queen after that is trapped..
Strade8 sorry, my mistake. of course I meant kB1. The queen would be perfectly closed by ponds and knight defended by bishop b3 and king, am I wrong?
Sure you are right, it is trapped, but I don't see how you can take it. Looks trapped but safe. I think black can menage to free it bringing down the pawns (maybe the rooks too) before white can menage to attack it (he has to attack it with the bishop, and to do so he has to move at least 4 times, so black has here 5 moves to free himself winning a rock for his effort).

RyanPondFriend Kxf2
Bowling
then white king captures black knight
at 38:25 White plays Queen d2. but earlier you said that Black really doesn't want to trade queens. so why does White not play Queen d1?

15:20 unfortunately I know the Bh2 line very well...
Always wondered what Ned Flanders did before moving next door to the Simpsons and starting a family.
Do a video on the Traxler counterattack.
Have you any specific questions about it? I may be able to help. It was one of my favourite counters several years ago. XDD
when white plays c7c6. why is b3*d5 bad? It gives black both bishops, but the dangerous knight is eliminated and black's pawn structure is ruined.
whites light squared bishop is usually too valuable, yes you got rid of their dangerous knight but you got rid of your more important defending piece, it's a trade off that is generally bad for whites in the Ruy Lopez, whites light square bishop is worth too much
18:00 can someone explain to me why black decided to go bh2 instead of Qh1?
ive been thinking about it all day and i cant figure out why.
Queen-H1,, then King-F2 takes the horse and escapes with blood on hands.
ahh thanks
please consider doing a video on the max lange attack tricks traps and the best possible variations.
jonathan is best
in 20.20 why bd2 bf7 if kf7 qa8 +-
Am I missing somtheing here ? At @18:00 isnt Qh1+ mate ?
After Kxf2 Qh4+ even with Rook and Bishop checks the King eventually runs to c2 via d3
Around 15min mark when wht plays Qf3 top block the knight move if like to seeblk one-year play Bb7
instructive
Black could have check mated white in 4 moves after rook e8, at 20:21 , does anyone agree ?
holy crap, i saw b4
How was castling illegal? Thanks
You can't castle in or through a check.
I didn't know if the game is played with an illegal move its continually played, kinda like baseball you just continue to play the game with the error, no pun intended. lol I prefer this, then for people referring back to an instant that might've affected some poorly but i doubt it happens very often still.
interesante la maniobra y dificil
Do a king's Indian Fianchetto series. Not just one video.
Hey, Ben? (idk who runs the channel). Can put the COE series in a playlist?
The review of the last game was rlly just confusing (coach also just seemed confused), should look at the game with the computer before I think
at 36:34 bishop should go to F3 then queen to G2. I don't see how white can stop checkmate at that point.
Qf1
can you please consider doing a video on the max lange attack tricks traps and the best possible variations
33:28 can't the bishop take the Knight,if Be5 then if
S
Could someone tell me why at 36:30 black did not play Bf3?
Qf1? just guessing...
Nxf3
37:44 Instead of Nf1 better would have been Bd1, forcing a bishop trade
after qh3 why would black's next move not be bf3?
this is in the 36th minute of video.
+Neru Meru I believe Qf1 defends and kicks blacks queen away, this is a common idea that is usually good for white
+Scott Mulligan i see. thanks
24:07
Does bxf7 works?
Rxbf7 then qc6?
Eskil O J The bishop is protected by the queen
The catalan please
Why not Qxa8 16:25 ?
Qxa8 Nxh3+ if bxh3 Qxe1 winning back the rock and having a position reallz bed for white. If instead Kf1 than QF4+, Ke2 Qe4+ and here on is check mate because of Bf4 and Nf2.
10 years of training and still lost? Reminds me of eric, nakamura and the chessbrah cave
Karpov has never played against the Marshall attack
4:17 taking on e4 leads to an open ruy. Very sharp. Not a Berlin endgame. Come on, dude.
I hate to tell you this, but you are actually incorrect. Allow me to explain properly.
The Berlin Endgame is reached after 1. e5 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. 0-0 Nxe4 5. d4 Nd6 6. Bxc6 dxc6 7. dxe5 Nf5 8. Qxd8 Kxd8
What's the difference between this and the line shown in the video? The subtle, but very important move a6 was played in the video, prepping black for b5. Also, Nd6 no longer comes with tempo against the bishop.
The open ruy lopez is 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. 0-0 Nxe4 6. d4 b5 7. Bb3 d5 8. dxe5 Be6. If instead, 6. d4 Nd6? Black is no longer hitting the bishop and is therefore worse.
The move a6 makes all of the difference!
u must have done some serious snooping to figure out that one, eh lad? ;)
Hence why some people are skeptical of a class a player lecturing on them.
after a6 Ba4 5...Nxe4 after 0-0 is not good
increible
is jonathan a grandmaster or IM or anything?
vanuel Mikhael ~1900+ tax elo
Hi sir add the middle game video I am Indian but I very very very very very very like your cheese chanle

yea dude if Jonathan Schrantz wants he can leave but he has confidince in him to teach children
