Perhaps Perhaps some day the sun will shine again, And I shall see that still the skies are blue, And feel once more I do not live in vain, Although bereft of You. Perhaps the golden meadows at my feet Will make the sunny hours of spring seem gay, And I shall find the white May-blossoms sweet, Though You have passed away. Perhaps the summer woods will shimmer bright, And crimson roses once again be fair, And autumn harvest fields a rich delight, Although You are not there. Perhaps some day I shall not shrink in pain To see the passing of the dying year, And listen to Christmas songs again, Although You cannot hear. But though kind Time may many joys renew, There is one greatest joy I shall not know Again, because my heart for loss of You Was broken, long ago. - Vera Brittain (to Roland Leighton)
This movie and this story is absolutely breathtaking. It's so emotional and filled with passion, and I can't get it out of my mind. The idea of how hard this young beautiful, strong women's life was, and she managed to deal with the loss of those most important to her. Let's just say I could cry any moment thinking about it. I adored this movie! I recommend it very much!
Abby. And to contemplate the scale on which this happened is almost incomprehensible, I feel your sentiments very strongly. Both my grandfathers returned though one lost an eye. He was very badly effected by this as a 17 year old.
Villanelle Violets from Plug Street Wood, Sweet, I send you oversea. (It is strange they should be blue, Blue, when his soaked blood was red, For they grew around his head; It is strange they should be blue.) Violets from Plug Street Wood- Think what they have meant to me- Life and Hope and Love and You (And you did not see them grow Where his mangled body lay Hiding horror from the day; Sweetest it was better so.) Violets from oversea, To your dear, far, forgetting land These I send in memory, Knowing You will understand.
The film was absolutely breathtaking the photography was chromatic genius. Her performance while rifling through his clothes seizing the poem set the screen on fire with electrifying passion dripping with emotions. A cinematic masterpiece of magnificence. Arthur my life would be enriched if it was 1917 and I was a US Marine headed to France with my M1917 rifle and lots of Gov issued 30 06 ammo. Man I can almost smell the gunpowder.
+Lillian Pandola I'm not impressed with Kit I've seen a few trailers and he seems like a winey boy in this flick. Do yourself a favor and watch The Trench with Daniel Craig. Now that's how a Sgt is supposed to behave.
Hédauville The sunshine on the long white road That ribboned down the hill, The velvet clematis that clung Around your window-sill Are waiting for you still. Again the shadowed pool shall break In dimples at your feet, And when the thrush sings in your wood, Unknowing you may meet Another stranger, Sweet. And if he is not quite so old As the boy you used to know, And less proud, too, and worthier, You may not let him go--- (And daisies are truer than passion-flowers) It will be better so. - Roland Leighton (to Vera Brittain)
Yes Nigel conflict is beautiful. Especially WWI. What pisses me off though is that Austria Hungary pretty much started it and Germany got stuck with most of the fighting. That's OK though I would have been with the Brits. The Germans were Brutes going through Belgium I wish I could have been a sniper picking them off.
Well this war ought never be forgotten. But rather this films main theme is of one woman's grasp in trying to understand the tragedy of it and of her own personal losses, and how she chose to devote herself thereafter.
A lifetime of happiness stolen from them by events much larger than themselves. By a war that should’ve never been fought. A whole generation of Europeans decimated by the short sighted and deeply irresponsible decisions of their leaders. Rest in peace you young men. Lest we forget.
I just got the CD of the music from this movie. The DVD will be next. OMG, this music speaks volumes to me. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking. I can’t listen to this piece enough.
Me while seeing the movie: *feels okay* *sees the first sad part* *hugs the teddy bear* *tries not to cry* *cries till the end of the movie* Please tell me I'm not the only one
The reality contained in this movie makes me so sorrowful. I keep trying to imagine the faces of millions of young people dying horrible deaths in trenches, barracks, and the mud of the battle fields! What For? Interrupted lives, forever taken away. Raptured from the realm of existence and catapulted into the unknown without a care in the world... From both sides of the war, people lost loved ones forever. What are you supposed to do? Keep walking? Keep breathing? Keep smiling? When the reasons to do so have been forced out of you?! This is a horrible world. Bathed by blood on every ground. There will never be peace or wholeness in a world like this. Too many people died. Their blood claims for revenge from deep within the Earth.
I'm glad I read your post cuz it gives me hope that there are some good realistic battle scenes. Man I was born too late. Sure I like WWII but WWI was where I belonged. I have a beautiful 1917 US service rifle that I purchased. I just wish it could have been issued to me as a WWI soldier on the way to the mud of France.
William Tracy Wow! Well if it makes you feel any better I strongly believe we are marching towards the greatest war ever waged on human history. I mean if a great war is what you wanted to be part of you were born for such a time as this!
Christ Is Risen Civil war may be coming to America. I was a Marine 23 years ago (Once a Marine always). And a World War is just as likely. Either way I'm ready. They can keep their M4 or M16A2 rifles I'll probably bring something a little older. Maybe the rifle the US issued between Korea and Vietnam I have one and it's magazine fed might be a little more practicle than one of my WWI rifles. Heck might take both.
William Tracy Funnily enough I think world war is more likely than a civil war... I understand nothing about rifles or guns though. I have no training whatsoever. So whatever needs to happen will happen. I'd rather to live at peace but that is never happening on this God damned planet. The further we walk and "evolve" as humans beings the further from peace and safety we get.
+Christ Is Risen Rifles are easy to learn, my rifles are WWI WWII and from first part if Vietnam war. You can get a hunting rifle bolt action which is real similar to the old military bolt actions. Just push bullets in internal magazine, push the bolt forward pull trigger then pull the bolt back which will ejects the empty cartridge. I'll put a vid up someone did with my favorite rifle. You have to make safety paramount though consider weapon loaded until you prove otherwise, never point any direction except downrange, don't let kids access except with strict supervision.
+Larry Stylinson This is probably one of the most emotional films ever made, and the critic reviews serve as eligible testaments for my statement. For me, this film had a sad yet blissful ending. I don't want to spoil it for you, you might want to watch it without spoilers - prepare some tissues of course. :)
This movie broke me in so many ways...

I also was emotionally touched in this film.
This film has become part of my soul and memory..
I can't agree with you more on this... Amazing movie and a terrific performance by Vikander.
Great film. Kinda disappointed it didn't got the recognition it deserved
This film is by far my favorite film I have ever seen
One of the best coming of age movies of all time. It was so poignant, beautiful, and crafted like a poetry.

They should have released it on more screens. This movie is so underrated.

What an absolute gem of a film, a perspective on how conflict affects us all...beautiful and heartbreaking.
