This is one of the most realistic war movies I've ever seen, and it's made more realistic by being filmed in an actual Southeast Asian jungle, presumably in Malaya. It shows a late phase of what the Brits call the Malayan Emergency, 1948-1960. It was their Vietnam War, except they won. When I was a US soldier in the Vietnam War, we used to talk about this history. If anybody asked how the Brits won it, I used to say, "Because Malaya is a long narrow peninsula surrounded by the sea and not bordering on China, and also because almost all the enemy fighters were Chinese, not Malays, easily distinguishable from the native Malays." If you want to know what the jungles of Vietnam really looked and sounded like, watch this movie.

Interesting short film. Originally I thought this was depicting the Malayan Emergency, where British and Commonwealth forces waged a very effective counter-insurgency war and thankfully defeated the communists. But this is actually from the Indonesian Confrontation (1963-1966), where again the British Commonwealth forces waged an effective campaign and gave the Indonesians a smacked arse! Anyway, much respect to all those involved in preventing Malaya falling to the communists and Borneo, Malaya and Singapore to the Indonesian nationalists. 👍🏻
@Mal Preece The Brits had no business being in Malaya in the first place; and surely it was the business of the natives to decide for themselves their political system. The West only wanted the region to exploit its resources for its military, economic and strategic advantages, the welfare of the local natives be dammed!!
@@uwanttono4012 You seem to have a very simplistic understanding of history. What do you mean ‘the Brits had no business being in Malaya’? They obviously did have business in Malaya, that’s why they went there! Are you opposed to any group of people, outside of ‘native’ Malays, being involved in Malay affairs, or are you just prejudiced towards the British? The vast majority of the anti-British communist support during the Malayan Emergency came from the minority ethnic Chinese population, whom the ‘native’ Malays held in contempt. The British had majority support during the insurgency, and that’s partly why they were able to defeat the communists.
@@malpreece5008 Simplistic or not it may be, but imperial Britain had no business occupying other peoples's lands and "lording it" over the natives. That can be said of ALL colonisers, not just Britain.
@@uwanttono4012 All human groups have engaged in the same process of trade, conflict, domination, development/exploitation throughout the centuries. That process often involves one group ‘lording it’ over another, but it often brings about development and progress. The most exceptional thing about British rule in Malaya is that it bought with it modern infrastructure, such as hospitals, schools, banks, road and rail networks, modern forms of communication and industry. It planted the seeds of modern democracy, established a judiciary and shared the English language. The British Empire was by far the most benevolent empire that has ever existed, and it relied heavily upon local cooperation. The British had as much business being in south east Asia as any other people, but they left a more significant legacy.
@@malpreece5008 You are entitled to your opinion that " The British Empire was by far the most benevolent empire that has ever existed...." no matter how daft it is.

The British have always been a highly aggressive force, always eager to play hearts and minds with local tribes and close with the enemy - the Asian countries have a different style of warfare, which did not serve them well in the Malaya/Borneo campaign.

Bloody British had no business being there in the first place; occupying, plundering and denuding land not theirs!!
What's the conflict shown in this movie? I thought it's WW2 against the japanese at first, but I see a helicopter
Thats gotta be japanese soldiers imo because their wearing what I believe to be japanese uniforms, paired with a carcano(which was partially used by the imperial Japanese during WW2, albeit chambered in 6.5 arisaka, approximately 60,000 being produced for Japan.).
Nah. Cadres of the Malayan Commie Party. All Chynese Insurrectionists who betrayed their adoptive homeland.
Nah, Indonesian troops during the Indonesian confrontation
Like the guy above me said, these are Indonesian troops in the Indonesian Malaysian Confrontation. "Ambush" was a propaganda film intended to scare the Indonesians and boost morale for the Malaysian and British public
Plus, the fact that the Brits have SLRs and helicopters is a dead giveaway that this isn't WW2
@@richardwong5616 If you're indeed Malaysian & know your Sejarah well, you would know otherwise. But regarding the vid, yes, I agree. That doesn't detract from the fact that the production team got it wrong & the vid is peppered with mistakes & inconsistencies. Conversely, your statement could be incorrect. Who knows...

Malay languange, the movie is called The 7th Dawn, about how malaysia with the help of british fought against communism after ww2
Malaysia got victory with the communists, Indonesia got the same too with the communists, when this communist party troops (pki) returned back to Indonesia they faced a much more brutal resistance with us, we call it pembantaian mangkuk merah (the red bowl massacre) in Kalimantan, Sumatera, Sulawesi, Java & Bali island.
