Trev - WOW - I can't thank you enough for telling my story to all your viewers, with so much enthusiasm and detail! I am truly humbled, and honored by your very kind words. I do hope I can help you in some way in the future! I also enjoyed the plug welding tips very much. I had no idea that making a larger hole increased the strength so significantly! That will certainly change the way I make plug welds in the future.
Ron - I've loved your books and videos, and my kids know your voice and fall asleep in minutes to it. PERFECT as they were growing up :) The one book I didn't have with a chapter by you hammer forming a peddle car I bought just recently on Trev's recommendation. Ed Barr also speaks well of you and your influence in his books. He started a channel just recently to stay sane through shutdown going back to basics at home.
Trev - thank you so much for sharing your experience and tips to help welding newbies like me. Really nice to hear your story about getting in touch with Ron too, so humbling! You've given me the confidence and guidance to start MIG welding on my own project cars, I can't thank you enough. Cheers
As a former collision repair guy who changed careers I can certainly identify with you. Thanks so much for the educational and entertaining videos! Great personal story about Ron C. What a class act.
You're one of the few people I watch ads for in an attempt to help you monitize....thank you for being so outstanding and pleasant to view/listen to... simply fantastic. from the USA to you a big 👍
Hello Trev. Really enjoyed this mini series on welding like the history of Ron Cavall too obviously. I really pleased that your planning to do more videos making complex panels shape. I love the artistic shapes you made for your bedford van I need to rewatch the whole series again from start to finish. I love the channel and pleased your doing what you want to do and not what everbody wants you to do. you are a real and proper Artisan.
Hi Trev thanks for the answer great to know your around. I wondered how your massive building project is going. I saw a video of your explanation of your business. and moving all your fridges into a new shed. you were hoping to free up more room to get your workshop back. I wish you luck Trev. No pressure but hope to see you as soon as your able. You have taught me a lot already and for doing what you have done I for one am very grateful. I also like your explanations you are excellent at explaining things. Thanks
Hi Trev, I have followed your advise about turning down the wire speed and gas pressure and now the results are amazing. In my next video I will promote your channel. Thank you Ralph
Trev. I'm a psychologist in AU. I also have hobbies including endless rust and refinishing on German vehicles...I've been doing it for years and I always have to improve my game. You help me toward this end and there is No Mistake Trev...Mate I reckon you are a legend and dear me I see the effort you put in to your presentations. I'm so grateful. Thanks mate. I wish I could return the favour.
Many thanks from a grateful 1972 Buick Centurion who was very nervous about a man approaching her with a cutoff disc before he watched your video's. Car is now in good hands.
I watched this last year and now again in April 2021. Exelent info Trev. Thanks so much for your fantastic tips, and missing you content in 2021. Hope all is well over in the UK . From Down under cheers Michael
Great video, thanks a million, your tips is always spot on, looking forward to your next TIG lesson. Also thanks for the story on Ron Covell, I’ve seen most of his online videos, very inspiering.
Given you are inspiring so many of us to take up metal bashing, it is so pleasing to hear you've managed to hook up with the man that inspired you. A heart warming story during these challenging times. Another great video. Keep up the great work.
Nice piece on Ron , that Chap is the reason i bought a Tig when i could afford it , just need to perfect using it . My Dad spent some time as a Panel beater ,stories of pre war cars in the 50's when it was easier to make a new wing than mend one and you could never knock a dent out of a Yank , i have his hammers and dollies some very strange that don't seem to be available now ,i shoud have paid more attention ,i used to hate holding them bleedin weights underneath something .Now tying to catch up with your Help ,keep it rolling pleasse .
All I can say is I am awe struck by your metal shaping skills. The way you are able to shape, weld and manipulate sheet metal and make it look like it's a factory built piece is truly inspiring. My youngest son and I are currently working on a '70 Dodge Challenger that I purchased way back in 1990. We are having a hard time fabricating parts that go under the roof above the front windows and quarter glass where the drip rails are attached. These parts are so rusted that huge parts of the metal have completely rusted away and I don't know what shape they are supposed to have. Just wanted to let you know that your videos are helping us immensely in the restoration of this project. You have sincerely inspired me to up my game in my feeble attempt at metal working. Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge and expertise. Awesome and very informative video as always. Greetings from San Diego, Tx.
Perfect timing Trev, I’ve just snaffled a Mig and am soon to start rust patches in my ‘ Holden One Tonner’ , Google the vehicle description they’re an Aussie icon. Cheers from South Australia.
Trev, I too have learned a lot from Ron Covell. I am currently working on a cover for an aluminum velomobile. Ron has graciously given me suggestions for working it. He is truly a artful man in all of what he does. You are yourself an accomplished metal shaper. Have fun.
Wow Trev! It’s amazing how connected we all are in panel beating all over the world ! I too am a long time follower of yours and guys like Ron, William and Wray. Everyone an inspiration as I’m a sheet metal hobbyist that has been mostly in the refinishing industry. Thank you so much for your excellent content.
Hi John, I too am a disciple of Trev's. He is my go to for help and inspiration. I've been inspired by him to start my own YT channel where I am sharing my restoration project . Kind regards Paul
Really great video (and mini-series) Trev - thanks hugely. The segment on Ron Covell was so good: you have a really easy way of presenting and that section just added to the human touch of the video. Keep going!
Trev where you try to apologize and let the viewers go after the practical part.lol If they left, they need to just unsubscribe. Lol Ron is cool I'd love to meet either one of you. Both of you possess the ability to share your knowledge and willingness to do so . Thank you for that. God bless and let's get the world hammered back into shape so to speak so we can meet. Amen
Brilliant Trev, as usual, Loved the bit about Ron too, and that little red Model A hot rod in the stills......gorgeous! look forward to the next video.
hi , 6.5mm I find perfect for plug welds , totally agree with you on the 5mm , they wont let them be used in the states for racing. I also find that a copper backing strip clamped int place lets you use more amps without the burn through issue , but dont go round in circles , try going from one side to the other , and start at the sides where the lip is full , ie not the skinny bit where the hole is closest to the edge of the lip , , and one weave as you cross the centre of the hole . works really well as you can get into position to watch the weld pool move across trying to circle blocks your own view ... just food for thought. oh , and back your wire speed off a wee bit , and the results will change dramatically .
Agree that TIG is best for sheet steel - must keep practicing so that I can do it ! Thanks for sharing , especially the chat at the end which reminded me of how much we miss by not visiting mates or going down the pub for a pint and just chewing the fat. Hopefully better times ahead.
Hi Trev, Fantastic video mate... Ron is an absolute legend! If you’re reading this Ron, you’re a idol of mine. I have many of your Videos much respect and much admiration to you👍 My pension isn't worth a carrot Trev!
Ron, your work is out of this world. It just felt like my heart melted when I saw the beauty of the air scoop at 46:45 I split my time among a number of interests, so I sometimes make something nice, but never museum quality. Refitting my near-salvage sailboat is at the top of my list, but I’d love to make an Art Deco custom, or a street rod out of a modern (but pre-2007) car.
Trev, great welding, when butt welding sheet metal with a mig leave a gap between panels for better penetration. The weld, do to surface tension will leave an reinforcement on the rear of the panels. Give it a try.
Thank you for both parts. The story of big metal-star ;) Ron Covell was very, very interesting! I know Ron's videos on youtube, unfortunatelly these are so short.
another great video trev , the person you mentioned Ron Covell i found on you tube he is a great insperation , both ron and yourself are true masters of metal shaping , he makes a great vidoe series of making a buck to make a fender , thanks for the videos , take care
Apart from learning some skills, there's always a lot of smiles and a few good belly laughs from your videos Trev - very inspiring from a hands-on and personal perspective :)
Fantastic Episode Trev!!! Personally I have finally started working on my AE86 and making body panel repairs. Your channel really has been gold for me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. And the support that Ron offers you shows how talent you are! Stay Strong!
Cheers Trev, watching your blog to remind myself the techniques as I'm welding up a chassis on a project this weekend and it's been 12 years since I've welded properly.
Great video Trev! Your a legend! Your passion for what you do is clear and so helpful how you give up your time to pass on your knowledge to us all, thanks for the inspiration!
Awesome video, thoroughly enjoyed, standard high quality practical lesson followed by a really engaging story. Cheers and never stop blogging about our passion, please.
Hi Trev, Just spent most of the day researching Weld Through Primer and got side tracked with this. And what better way to get side tracked. I really enjoyed hearing your version of the Ron Covell story. really interesting and inspiring. I totally agree with your philosophy on living your life doing the creative things that put a "smile on ya dial" as opposed to worrying about things that may or may not ever happen. Live in the moment and enjoy life to the full. Anyway, after all that research I've decided that I don't need WTP on this particular job so I can now just crack on.......at least I have thought about it and isn't it the thought that counts? 🤣 Bye for now Paul (from 48-SPOKES)
Thanks Trev for this mini series. Just bought my first half decent mig, by coincidence, the very one I saw in the first part. My aim is to be able to repair parts for my vintage tractor and to build equipment I could never normally afford, for the farm . No art I'm afraid , talent is sadly lacking, I can admire your work but I have no imagination or flair so I'll stick to basics . I will still enjoy the process and the results which I guess is what counts. That said, I do find that I can watch you fabricating a part for the Bedford and a light goes on in my head which solves a really mundane question I have about a light fitting or the number plate holder as just two examples. Loved the piece on Ron Covell. Many thanks. Stay safe and hope to see the van at events when the madness is over. Lloyd.
Thanks Trev very useful advice. Just started on floor panel and sills of a bongo, plug weld advice very timely. As ever lots of great content. Tried your metal shrinking crimping approach on the tailgate corners. Worked a treat. Must get myself a TIG setup . This is a great way of using COVID lockdown. 👍
ron fournier's book "metal fabricator's handbook" is what got me interested in metalshaping. it makes me happy to know that ron covel worked with ron fournier.
Absolutely spot on Trev! Thank you for this.. I may be an aerospace tig welder.. but I do use Mig for anything structural (frame/chassis) on the car and tig on all body panels where I can. Most of the time I get caught up on clean up.. I fuss a ton about it as I want it to be close to perfect as I can get.. Always appreciate your tips and tricks! All I need now is to get my hands on the Epoxy Mastic and I am good to go. 😉👍 Thanks again Trev! Cheers! 😎🤙
Ron Covelle is a legend. I'd love a walk around with Ron and maybe the Brookville Roadster's place to see how they put their bodies together. I eventually assembled a '32 Ford Model B flat pack steel body which are stamped out from Reprosteel in Sweden but man that was hard and time consuming especially as it didn't come with A or B pillars or any kind of subframe and I was on my own so had to make jigs to hold everything together until I was happy with the placement. I also had to adapt the firewall to suit the motor I was putting in. If anybody thinks a kit car or any other flat pack body is going to fit straight out of the box they are seriously deluded lol Love the videos Trev, very enjoyable :)
Awesome Trev, bit spooky because I was only watching one of Ron's videos couple of months ago about making bomber seat as I'm making a bomber bench seat for the front of the rat.
Trev there's no need to use bigger holes for puddle welds...The very best way is TIG...fuse directly around the edge of the hole without using rod first, then fill up with rod. Aways use a pulse setting if you can to avoid un-necessary heat build up. If you only have access to MIG then the opposite technique works better. Start off by just building a puddle in the centre of the hole until it spills on to the edges of the hole.
@@trevsblog What did I say to tell you about one of my guilty pop secrets? Yes and Keith Flint. Their music and John Lydon's truly brutal honesty in interviews makes me a fan indeedy!
DingleZilla I was just watching a John Lydon interview and caught a glimpse of your profile picture in the comments section. I guess the DZ is very noticeable. I like his interviews among others Morrissey, Kenneth Williams, Dennis Potter great thinkers and people that stick with their principles. I don’t necessarily agree with everything they say but they knew who they were, and did things for the right reason.
@@trevsblog Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... you got me there! I never thought about how memorable or noticeable my DZ avatar/logo is, obviously good enough for you to note! You said something there young man that everyone from every background should adopt and live by, "I don’t necessarily agree with everything they say" and neither do I but wouldn't the world be better if more people accepted other differences! All the best, Jon.
So it sounds like you getting to meet Ron would be roughly as inspiring as any of us getting to meet you. :) And as an FYI kids here in the US go to school until the age of 18...there are 12 years, or grades, they need to complete. Grades 9-12 are called "high school". College/university would come after graduating high school.
Another very informative and entertaining vid, especially the Ron Covell story. Have you ever looked at “coldwarmotors”? Amongst other things, he is restoring a 1960 Plymouth Fury which had a totally rotten bottom half so he started by grafting the remaining good metal onto the floor and cowl of a 1960 Dodge Dart (same wheelbase in Canada) Some amazing panel fabrication going on so well worth a look. If nothing else you will like the music.
Great as always trev, wow ron covell watches you too we are in good company. How about a tool box tour on the tools you use and the makes and budget?? Think I spotted a desoutter angle die grinder there. Keep up the good work...
How stoked would you be with Ron contacting you!! just shows how good you work is.I am trying to get in to it but times my killer. Hi have a good size metal fab shop and 2 squareback vw to do both bodies are straight but easy to get to both sides of the panels.Still watching your older shows, and love your techniques .Thanks again I've learnt a lot
Trev! No sleeping on the job. You know of Marcel De Ley? He was here in the states. I liked him. You should know about him. I think those 3/16 inch punches are basically for Clekos and not for plug welding.
Hi Trev...great video. With regards to strength of weld. Worked for many years at a Japanese car company and there are test methods and standards to judge if the weld is ok. Try to separate the panels by hammering and prying with a chisel next to the weld NOT through the weld. You should be able to pull a nugget/button and sometimes pull a small hole at the thinner material. (which I noticed was present even on the smaller weld). There should be standards available on the www. for judging weld integrity. Keep up the good work.
Many years of sheet metal work, race cars mainly, you can't beat Unibit step drills. Not the cheapo Chinese junk, either Irwin / Hall . Unlike twist drill, you get a perfectly hole, and no pull through like ordinary twist drill do.Use a quality cutting paste, they last for ages.
Ron Covell an easy story to tell is a great one 👍 thanks for your inspiration and encouragement. Cheers Trev 👍
Ron - I've loved your books and videos, and my kids know your voice and fall asleep in minutes to it. These are must-see videos. Nowhere else will someone explain this in such detail. Knowledge is wealth. Here it is.
Thanks for the Ron Covell story. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.

That story at the end wow love it.

Yes it is probably the best metal fab book ever.
Great video 👍 Trev I like to counter sink the plug welds makes a lovely flat plug spot.
Trev, thank you once again for another excellent and inspirational welding video! Cheers from West Los Angeles!
Great video. Love the Covell talk story. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Nice video Trev! Enjoyed the tutorial and loved the story about Covell. 👍🇺🇸

Great video Trev, you have inspired me to get cracking with my 100e and my own youtube channel!

If anybody thinks a kit car or any other flat pack body is going to fit straight out of the box they are seriously deluded lol
Love the videos Trev, very enjoyable :)
Thanks Trev, well done! Cheers, Paul
I’ve always...Always been crap at plug welds....but I’m getting there...👍🇬🇧
Vw Rosstorations Ross the quality of your work overshadows most of the professional panels beaters I have worked with, that’s a fact 👍
Trev's Blog much obliged sir, much obliged...
Awesome Trev, bit spooky because I was only watching one of Ron's videos couple of months ago about making bomber seat as I'm making a bomber bench seat for the front of the rat.
Excellent video and very timely, I will finally start patching up my rustbucket this summer :)
Inspirational as always Trev. Thanks
Great video Trev, more great welding tips and tricks ( i need lots of tips with my welding lol) Great story about Ron.
Cheers, Jeff.
cabdriveruk thank you buddy 👍
Trev there's no need to use bigger holes for puddle welds...The very best way is TIG...fuse directly around the edge of the hole without using rod first, then fill up with rod. Aways use a pulse setting if you can to avoid un-necessary heat build up. If you only have access to MIG then the opposite technique works better. Start off by just building a puddle in the centre of the hole until it spills on to the edges of the hole.
As always another quality video Trev. Keep it up!
Excellent and what a great story. Love your videos, just got to get time to watch them lol keep up the great work 😊
Great video Trev! Cheers, Doug
Good video young man and Mr Covell makes some beautiful creations!
DingleZilla are you a John lydon fan?
Very nice and informative video thank you Trev. ps I hope you have a license for that shirt!
So it sounds like you getting to meet Ron would be roughly as inspiring as any of us getting to meet you. :)
And as an FYI kids here in the US go to school until the age of 18...there are 12 years, or grades, they need to complete. Grades 9-12 are called "high school". College/university would come after graduating high school.
Chris Freemesser bless you Chris and thanks for the information 👍
Another great tutorial Trev! Thank You
Another very informative and entertaining vid, especially the Ron Covell story.
David Walker Thanks I’ll have to look them up. Cheers Trev 👍
Thanks Trev
Great video again Trev! Greetings from sunny Chipping Sodbury. 👍🏼
Brilliant . Thank you
Great as always trev, wow ron covell watches you too we are in good company. How about a tool box tour on the tools you use and the makes and budget?? Think I spotted a desoutter angle die grinder there. Keep up the good work...
Cheers trev
Like Ron, you are a WIz keep it up and Master Ronnie
How stoked would you be with Ron contacting you!! just shows how good you work is.I am trying to get in to it but times my killer. Hi have a good size metal fab shop and 2 squareback vw to do both bodies are straight but easy to get to both sides of the panels.Still watching your older shows, and love your techniques .Thanks again I've learnt a lot
Trev! No sleeping on the job. You know of Marcel De Ley? He was here in the states. I liked him. You should know about him.
I think those 3/16 inch punches are basically for Clekos and not for plug welding.
Have you seen Macromachines on here? Kid building a racing car.
orson carte most certainly do, what a great channel, very inspiring 👍
Excellent 👏👏👏👏👏
Floats my boat!👍
Vocês estão muito na frente.tem muitas ferramentas para o trabalho mais mesmo assim parabéns por tudo
Evening TREVOR love your video appreciate them what thickness are rpt he steel that you are plug welding
Thank you.
Jesus Hanna you and Fitzee are my faves
