    What I like about this is that it doesn't have the "once per turn" clause

  • @mave6602

    Note worthy: A copied mutation spell counts toward how often the creature has mutated.
    Also Clone is the worst example to copy Ivy. If you instead use Spitting Image or Cackling Counterpart on Ivy you don't only get a clone of her mutated version but also a clone of another creature like Eternal Witness who can return Cackling counterpart or a land to recast Spitting Image.
    basicly doubling your amount of Ivys for 2GGUU while also generating an army of Eternal Witnesses.

      How would a copied mutation work in that sense? Sorry, I still have trouble wrapping my head around some of the rulings...

    • @mave6602
      @mave6602 2 роки тому +3

      @@joshuaivanov5963 Imagine when you copy a permanent spell you use a token-card to represent it and when it resolves it becomes a token creature.
      That is how copy creature spells work. Basicly the same Volo works with Mutate if you want to look up already listed rules.
      If Ivy is still on the battlefield the copied spell mutates onto her like a regular mutate creature would do. That means that mutation actually counts towards the creatures that have a mutate trigger with X, where X is the number of times this creature has mutated.
      If e.g. your ivy has 3 copy mutations on top of her Auspicious Starrix, Migratory Greatorn and Sawtusk Demolischer the next time you cast a mutation like (Archipelagore) spell on any creature she gets a copy of that spell on her and X is 4 because another one is added. But if you copied her by casting Cackling Counterpart on a creature before casting Archipelagore you have two ivys and each of them get a Archipelagore mutated on her.
      By being a copy of the pre mutated Ivy the copy has the same abilities but never mutated. Now that you cast Archipelagore, on a creature both get an actuall mutation from a Archipelagore copy spell. the 1st Ivy now has 4 mutations, the 2nd has 1 mutation but both have the same abilities.
      I hope that helps so far.
      Also the copy token of Ivy only works because you mutated another non legendary creature on top and changed her name and P/T to that creatures name & P/T e.g. if the 1st mutation you put on her is Sawtusk Demolisher you basicly now have a 6/6 Sawtusk demolischer with trample flying and the mutate ability that mutated 1 time.
      Also if someone destroys Ivy while you have a creature spell copy on the stack that tries to mutate on to her that spell stops being a mutation spell and enters as a token.

    Hello magic and Commander community :) I am relatively new to magic and I was wondering where you guys get the ideas for all these cards ? Is there a website where you can type in what kind of effect in a card / type of card with a certain effect you are searching for ? As a new player that would help me very much in getting an overview of what kind of cards I could include in a deck.
    Thank you in advance ! 😊

    I wasn't thinking the mutate route. I had Simic Enchantron in mind instead. Colossification. Have either an untap spell or Leyline of Anticipation (to drop Col right before your upkeep). 22 commander damage in the air to anybody who looks at you funny, plus a +20/+20 creature you can keep as a blocker.
    Helm of the Gods + Shimmering Wings (a single U for an enchantment that can bounce itself for U; I used to use this to spam Faeries with Alela before I discovered / could afford Sensei's Divining Top) can also result in a ridiculous number of enchantments clogging the board until you can get in for something huge. Shimmerwing Chimera can freely bounce one of your auras every turn for another recast, meaning another copy. You can use Portal of Sanctuary on your enchantment patsy to bounce it back and then recast it again, thus giving Ivy yet another copy of your most critical enchantments upon reacst. Ivy makes for a great home for that Errant, Street Artist from New Capenna, thus copying that copied enchantment spell yet again. Oh, and Eldrazi Conscription isn't Legendary. Just saying. If you need protection from removal, Slip Out the Back can essentially phase out your enchantment patsy _and_ your commander all at once. It's almost as good at protecting your board as Teferi's Protection. (Your life is another story, but hey, what do you want for _one_ Blue mana?)
    If you're looking to double up on the commander, there's also Double Major and Helm of the Host. Helm isn't _that_ much more expensive than Spark Double, relatively speaking, and I consider it a staple of any "Elegant Egotist" (clone your commander as many times as possible for bonkers advantage) deck.
    Y'know what's a _really_ funny spell to cast with Ivy on board? Sublime Epiphany.

    My first thought was something like: Some temporary-token-creature engine, like Mimic Vat. Cast Rancor on Vat's token. Ivy gets a copy of Rancor. Vat's token exiles at end of turn, sending Rancor to GY, when sends Rancor to hand. Repeat every turn.

    Sadly parallel lives/doubling season type of effect wont work on copied spells. They only work on tokens created, not copies of a permanent spell (weird ruling).
    In short, it wouldnt work with ivy's ability, whose not copying the aura, but the spell itself, and thus, even with a parallel lives, would create only one aura.
    (also, mutate can make ivy nonlegendary, clone her and profit)

    • @gorramnelf
      @gorramnelf 2 роки тому

      If the aura copy enters play as a token copy of the aura then the token copy would get copied, so whichever creature was getting the copy of the aura would end up with two token copies of the aura once the copied aura spell has resolved.

      The copy that you're targetting would not get to trigger its ability. Because the card is effectively saying "When you cast a spell that targets one OTHER creature..." Whenever a card self references, mechanically it just means 'this card'. Any other copies or the original that are in play would get their ability triggered though. Even though they share the name "Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief" they are not the target and can be triggered.

    New player here - Does the mutate effect scute swarm's copy ability? This was mentioned around 13:30 mins into the video. I play it in one of my decks but as the rulings state the below I thought it wouldn't?
    The token copy won't copy counters or damage marked on Scute Swarm, nor will it copy other effects that have changed Scute Swarm's power, toughness, types, color, and so on. Normally, this means the token will simply be a Scute Swarm, but if any copy effects have affected the original Scute Swarm, the token will take those into account.

    Mutate is my favourite mechanic in years, but there's just not enough of it printed to really build around. This is immediately the best Mutate commander I've seen as you can cram in as many mutate creatures as you want, and then still fill out the deck with other synergies. Also mutate helps balance the need for enough spells to target creatures, and enough creatures to target with spells by filling both roles.

    Important to note: currently Ivy Gleeful Spellthief does not work, because there is no game object named Ivy, so she will create effects with no targets, so even if you copy those copies with something like Twinning Staff, those copies will also have no targets that can be selected because the spell they're copying has no targets.
    I expect this will be errata'd before she officially releases.

      No? Many legendary creatures with titles refer to themselves without said title. And (assuming Gatherer is correct) their oracle text does not include their full card name in those abilities.
      Arashi, the Sky Asunder allows to discard "Arashi". Yet, there is no card named simply "Arashi".
      However, if Ivy's last sentence was "The copy targets a creature called Ivy" then it would be different, as you'd need a card called exactly "Ivy" to be the target.
