The last of us 1/2 is an amazing survival horror, in the strong story(strong enough to turn into an HBO series even non-gamers like), the survival elements of crafting, the ability to sneak around or go head on with enemies, and the whole time always having to worry about resources and what's coming up next... It has a dread about it(like metro series) of always having to worry about the risk of what you'll get by going a certain path over another... Though it's not like a silent hill style horror, it and metro 2033 series are these strong story based item/equipment conservation mixed with the dread of what next big set piece battle is coming up... That is if you're playing the right difficulty for the horror experience on both, if you just want the story, you can get it with minimal worry about item management, enemy strength etc... But if you go for the harder difficulties they really turn into heart pounding horror games, where every wasted item, or enemy encounter you get this feeling of "should I have handled that like I did? Will I make it? So with more thought they are dread based games (esp the last of us 2, and metro Exodus) that have horror in them... So maybe they don't count... Though they've left me both with moments of actual dread, in the same way the remake of RE 2/3 did Again this is all my opinion and I could be wrong... But they did what they did well... Just like dying light one did(esp after 7 years of patches) hopefully dying light 2 in 6 years is where the first one got to...
Gotta say one hell of a hidden gem of a youtube channel. Congrats on the 1k subs! Also 19:29 you mentioned it multiple times in the video what is that quote about a dead king still dreams????
You know, I had to look. It's a quote from Mass Effect 2, where a scientist says, "even a dead god can dream" trying to make sense of how this ancient (and dead) machine was still affecting them. I wasnt doing it consciously. Oops.
I gotta say metro 2033/exodus/last light really does an amazing job at tight rope walking the line between survival, survival horror, first person shooter, regular horror, and terror... There weren't alot of jump scares, just alot of "oh, how should I best handle this situation as I don't know what I'll fight next" Like when the currency in game is literally a better type of bullet (as in prewar good bullets that you trade for items/upgrades/weapons) but at the same time can also be used as a stronger more accurate bullet to use in your firearm... It wasn't purely a horror game, but it was definitely a survival esque horror game that if someone likes horror the first game is worth playing (esp if bought on sale or a demo) to get an idea, as people who love and hate horror games all love it But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong
AAA and horror is a bit of a contradiction in terms. The sentiment expressed by the people behind Dead Space and RE7 puts it best. Like, our game was a bit much, thus we tone it down to appeal to more people. Many years earlier Alone In The Dark would already foreshadow this. As its direct sequel went all out guns and had you battling zombie pirates armed with machine guns...
What you call terror if i may offer is actually suspense. Alfred Hitchcock described suspense as "Imagine there is a bomb in a room.. suspense is when it doesn't go off."
Dude your channel is easily going to blow up. The quality of these videos and the presentation is on par with any other channel. It looks like you have been doing this for year.
Got recommended your last vid on KBUs today and was blown away by the production quality. Assumed you already had millions of subscribers and was surprised to see sub-10. With this quality of content there’s no doubt you could crack a milly. Thanks for the vids!
I like your narrative style and content. I'm looking forward to more content. I would like to hear your take on narrative heartbreak, ie: Valiant Hearts, Gris, Edith Finch.
Hey Wolf, I've been loving your videos so far and I want to criticize something that probably will fix itself with experience and more videos, so I wouldn't even need to talk about. I know it's kind of unsettling to have a big script and talk alone for half an hour (actually a lot more due to cut-outs and errors, amiright?), but as a non-native english spea... listener, I've had some problems: some sentences have quite odd and unnatural voice tones on specific parts, for me. Of course, probably it's small stuff that natives would automatic correct in their minds and keep listening normally (and it's basically an opinion since it's based on my personal experience here), but for us it may break the "line of thought" and then we'll need to pause the talking and go back some seconds to properly understand. An example of this from the KBU video, that actually got corrected on the AAA Horror game video, is: "It's a lot less obvious than: "use your blast in the big bug blocking the way", and this engages the player more than the alternative... *you...* *both...* discover how this works and what to do with it with *your own brain* " This sudden stop and entonation on the "you... both..." sounded like a sentence that goes "something can be X, or Y, *YOU, BOTH* ". I really got confused by a solid minute by this one, thinking that "both" refeered to the 2 aforementioned topics, until I realized what you wanted to mean, but now in this video: "the survival horro genre is getting stale, as evidenced by *both* Residen Evil 3 nemesis's experimentation in the genre *and* it lacks of sales, so...", This better emphatisation on " *Both* X *AND* Y ", makes an clear understanding that you're listing 2 specific subjects. I may be picky, or spoiled by all the content competitivity in the platform where everyone wants to sound as "studio produced" as possible. But I genuinely think keeping an eye on that will help your content quality, so I wanted to share it, hope I explained it clearly. Success, Super. :D
As someone who very recently got into horror games this was an excellent summary, so surprised when I went to go find more of your videos to see how new of a channel this is. Excellent work I’m super excited for whatever is next!
This is absolutely besides the point but I can't stop geeking out about the fact that someone used both "Theme of Laura" and "End of Small Sanctuary" in one video.
Hey, please keep making these video essays, these are phenomenal. I hope the momentum from your last video holds up and allows you to focus more heavily on these
I love horror movies but have never actually played a horror game except about half of dying light 2 until I got bored (if that counts) feel like I've been missing out now lol. Great video btw.
So far you are proof that well made videos have a place on UA-cam. You have impressed me so much with 2 videos. I just discovered you and I'm a fan. You have a talent for this. Keep making videos and you'll stumble upon the video that'll give you your big break Keep on going pls. UA-cam needs good content creators
A very positive and hopeful outlook on the AAA horror game history lol, not what I was expecting, nor entirely agree with. But people play horror for different reasons.
I became a horror game fan during those early indie years just after Amnesia exploded. This was a nice intro to the original horror boom that I missed and a nostalgic walkthrough of my own adventure in horror. I still tend to prefer indie games since I think there's more heart and innovation to be found there (admittedly after wading through a crap ton of clones) to the point that you can see the influence different indies had on mainstream gaming but it's been really cool trying out big budget horror games, too. Though please don't tease me with the idea of an Alien Isolation remake/sequel. That is my all time fav horror game and I'd KILL to see it brought back and updated.
6:00 you are criminal for putting this song in, got me dancing while I'm tryna e at breakfast. Great video and taught me alot about the history of horror, keep it up!
I swear to god, the fact Junji Ito was planned work with Kojima and Guillermo makes it even worse. Could have been easily the best Horror-Expirience ever. And yes: Def. go and play Signalis. Makes you feel all sorta feelings. EDIT: Looks to me like the algorithm is pushing your stuff. Your KBU vid was also very good!
I’m looking for horror games that burrow into my brain and infect my soul with terror. Needless to say it’s hard to find games that do that. Thankfully Visage was made
Trying to figure out how to write a comment in which I can recommend people play Omori, because it's amazing and terrifying and it's been at least 20 minutes since I last mentioned it.
Bro you're my cousin I just know all this shit. Played most on Xbox 360 5th grade and on. This is my culture im more connected to these feelings than anything. You touch my heart doing these
I would say modern resident evil is more akin to an action game with a horror aesthetic. Like if you replaced the models with anything less gory then it would be an action game through and through
I'm not affected by horror games so they end up just feeling like aesthetics for puzzle games and action games. I'm also not bothered by horror movies so that could be a thing
I think you might have mixed up the definition of horror and terror in the beginning... Horror is the lingering fear of the unknown. Terror is an imminent sense of dread and fear for your life. That is why terrorists are called terrorists, not horrorists.
The versions of horror and terror I was referring to here comes from the Literary forms of the two. There's a chance that time or the different medium has caused me to be wrong, but this is where I found this. To be honest with you, I referred to it in the same way as you did before I looked it up. Either way, I could be wrong!
Fantastic content. Your very first video made me hit that sub button. And I'm really nerdy, when it comes to like and sub somebody on YT (gotta care for that liked videos list to be perfect for future revisiting). Am I witnessing the born of another YT video game essay legend?
Ehh, for me Resident eviil 7 & Village, was not about getting scared, it felt more like a thriller horror. And I've played on hard difficulty. Some of the areas couldn't scare me, i was just like "Oh come on maaaaaaaaan". Resident evil 2 remake had me in "'fear". The staging, the graphics, the sounds..the way you pace your shots and your items..Yeah now that was good to experience.
i miss the action horror genre like doom 3, fear, re4-5, dead space 2 but ill gladly take mascot horror over another amnesia clone. I dont buy the idea that horror games aren't mainstream they blatantly are with how popular screamer streamers are. Outlast got huge because of them, Hack n slash games are technically niche but god of war ragnarok was huge, those game sales you mentioned are overall anomalies
As someone who was never really interested in horror, this was a nice summary of the history I missed
I love the driving energy of this video. Its wonderful that you're able to balance that pace whilst still presenting plenty of thoughtful analysis
Yes I concur everyone play Signalis, especially if you like RE or silent hill
I appreciate all the nods to luigi's mansion, as it's about the scariest horror game I'm willing to play.

25:24 cancels PT, fires the developer, holds onto the IP until horrors popular again, pumps out four games for the fan boys
So scummy
Gotta say one hell of a hidden gem of a youtube channel. Congrats on the 1k subs! Also 19:29 you mentioned it multiple times in the video what is that quote about a dead king still dreams????

Loved the video on KBUs, nice surprise to see that you're putting out more videos. Hope to see even more in the future, your stuff slaps!
My favorite horror experience is Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye.
I can't believe this is your SECOND youtube video, you've got this down pat like your channel was 10 years old already.
Please continue making these kinds of videos! Probably the most entertaining and interesting videos I’ve seen in a while!
I'm a sucker for quality video game video essays. Subbed !
I love how dying light, a game which is much more focused on fun parkour and combat than horror, is the best selling horror game
Great to see such an analytical and deep dive on this topic! Excited to see what you make in the future
dunkey reference. Subscribed
Watched your KBUs video a couple days ago, and didn't expect you to come out with something so fast! Great work man!
Definitely looking forward your "Modern History of Indie Horror Games". ;)
I gotta say metro 2033/exodus/last light really does an amazing job at tight rope walking the line between survival, survival horror, first person shooter, regular horror, and terror... You're already becoming one of my fav channels. Happy I can be here at the beginning!
I like your narrative style and content. I'm looking forward to more content.
I would like to hear your take on narrative heartbreak, ie: Valiant Hearts, Gris, Edith Finch.
I was never really into the genre until I played Resi 4 VR, and now I get it. This was such a god crash course into everything I missed
Damn dude your video quality and presentation is insane for two vids, keep it up and looking forward to your future uploads (don't burn yourself out).
But indie horror games are like- always better than AAA horror...
Wish you had more videos! Keep up the great work man!
Between this and your last video on kbu’s I’m really looking forward to seeing this channel grow. Keep up the good work!
Man keep doing what you're doing, video like that are amazing
This was a good watch. I hope to see more from you.
Keep making videos like this. Only 2 videos and I'm already in love with your style and engagement throughout the video. Amazing work!
Loved this video, keep up the quality content!

AAA horror is BACK baby!
Ah yeah, Daddy's posting again 😩

you absolutely nailed this video man
i‘d love to see more of that :)
This is good shit, you're awesome. I hope this channel thrives.
Love it when I find a channel that is going places early on. Keep up the excellent content dude.
Hey, please keep making these video essays, these are phenomenal. I hope the momentum from your last video holds up and allows you to focus more heavily on these
Commenting to say I’m really excited for the emergence of this channel. Keep it up ❤
I love horror movies but have never actually played a horror game except about half of dying light 2 until I got bored (if that counts) feel like I've been missing out now lol. Great video btw.

You're my new favorite gaming essay channel :)
I think you have a great journey ahead of you, the videos are really really well crafted. Keep it up mate
A very positive and hopeful outlook on the AAA horror game history lol, not what I was expecting, nor entirely agree with. But people play horror for different reasons.
Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.
Hi Superdude your videos bring joy to my brain

The fact that the highest selling horror game is hardly even considered horror by many really says something
As a Halo fan and a Horror game fan, I've always wanted a Flood Horror game.
Can’t believe I never once noticed Sheva being left-handed. As a fellow lefty, I feel great about that!
i swear you had like atleast 300k subscribers, your content is so good, how is your channel so small????
7:05 Aye! I didn't realize left-handed people were portrayed in video games!
Really enjoyed watching this one, thanks for making it!
Really good video! Looking forward for more :)
These are really good videos, I hope there will be more
U underrated as shit dawg keep it up
Only 2 videos in and allready this good, keep it up man!
bros growing like crazy
Wow your channel is a true gem! SUPERb
Fear never struck me a big budget horror series personally
A second well made video. Now I have to subscribe, hoping for more.
I swear to god, the fact Junji Ito was planned work with Kojima and Guillermo makes it even worse. Could have been easily the best Horror-Expirience ever. And yes: Def. go and play Signalis. Makes you feel all sorta feelings.

Coming from your previous videos, Outer Wilds is also surprisingly enough a pretty great horror game!
I’m surprised you managed to make a video like this without mentioning Fatal Frame considering it was one of the notable titles for horror on the ps2
You are really good, for someone starting out..
Talking about yer editing & voice over...
adding engagement because I want you to be successful and make more videos
Hope more people discover your channel
Signalis was great. It is a very good time to be a horror game fan!

Thank you! Love the recaps!

As a teen I loved Re6 !
I’m curious if I replayed it if I’d like it
I played it for the first time recently, and uh... I recommend bringing a friend cause that makes anything more fun
And somehow the scariest game I've ever played isn't even an actual horror game; it's Outer Wilds
youtube algorithm did me a solid and recommended you to me before you became famous.

have u played "the Darkness" by 2k or the first two Bioshocks? liked the vid by the way, came here after KBG.
