Yes true im out of food on payday so ill be hungry but its still cheaper to eat a good meal at a restaurant then shop for every craving you have in the store.
I remember once there were many packages of some fruit and the store cold not get rid of it. Each package cost £1. The managers did the trick of repacking the fruit into half size containers and reducing the prize half (so it was sold for exactly the same price per kg). Then they put a big sign with ONLY 50p a package and suddenly customers got into hysterical fight to get as many packages as possible. The managers were watching nearby, grinning. We got rid of all the fruit which was nearly out of date.
My local grocery store will do this too. They will "mark down" meat or packaged cooler items but leave the price nearly the same as the regular price - sadly, people fall for that so often. My favorite is when they run a sale on say chicken legs and the day after the sale ends they "mark down" the ones that didn't sell based on the regular price - they're always MORE expensive for that clearance price than they were on the sale price!
I accidentally printed a sign as a sales one instead of the normal one. Had no time to correct ist. Well, we sold ~50 pineapples for 3,29€. Normal week is like 20 pineapples, and the price on sale could drop below 1€. Customers are stupid.
I probably would have gone for this. I shop for myself, so frequently the portions they sell are too large and I end up buying it, not eating all of it and having to throw it because its gone off. Smaller portions at a cheaper price would be better for me.
Worked at Tesco once for 7 months... never again, a lot of the senior managers are full of crap and constantly belittle you, treat you like you are worthless to them. They need to remember without their "Worthless" customer assistants, their shop is nothing and their performance targets aren't happening.
thefiestaguy I've been working at a supermarket for 8 months now and can relate. I was once sworn at and told I couldn't leave until I had completed something - which took me an extra 20 mins unpaid. I dread the thought of going to work and only stay working there because as a sixth form student the pay is good and the hours suit me. But working where I do has made me more like Steven. I really do hunt out cheap products and price check before I fall for a promotion.
If someone reaches in life the truly lowest of "high rank" positions as a manager of a supermarket, of course, they have to belittle people under them to feel bigger. Do not worry about that. It is a dirty industry (liquidating farmers and small shops) build on dirt (the "managers" who employ workers on (lower than) minimum wages bullying them into high-class performance. Noone else than a bad brand supermarket would keep such managers who do not manage their instruments (the shop assistants) well any more than one would hire a craftsman who doesn´t keep their instruments in peak condition or a cleaner who doesn´t keep clean. It´s all trash.
I'd never dismiss supermarket assistants as worthless. I once cut my finger in Tesco (Can't remember how) and an assistant all but ran to customer service to get me a wet wipe and a plaster, which she putbon me
It's amazing how little has changed in 11 years since this was aired. Yes people are shopping more local and in other places again and using Aldi and Lidl etc, but the ranges and the way it's laid out and the general look of the store hasn't changed much.
Stores dislike people like me. I get, get it and get out. I don't linger. And I look for bargains. I'll buy day old which is just as good as that day fresh. If I don't need it, I don't buy it.
I do the same. I don't linger. I don't alway/never look for bargains unless I have reason to in which case I'll get something cheaper (maybe I just want to try something else or am looking to drop the average cost of a shop). I know my route going in. I get in. I get what I'm after (I have no list though and sometimes may add one or two things, but it doesn't really affect the average cost of the shop) and get out with self service. I don't shop at a place because I have a clubcard. I will drop a place/brand if something better shows up
I had a Costco card membership and I would go up just for two items, a loaf of my favorite bread and Folgers coffee when it was marked down. I dont shop there anymore though.
I often have to go to the supermarket see what is on clearance then figure out what I can make and do a meal plan that way. It is easy to stay on a budget because right now I have very little to no money. I can't splurge even if I want too.
mjname Same here, frequently I'll start my visit to the supermarket with a brief tour of most aisles and sections just to see what's on sale, because not everthing is in the weekly flyers or listed online. With technology these days you can browse new recipes or make a meal plan based on the best value and your preferences, all right in the store as you shop. On a side note I also noticed that at my local 24-hour supermarket, perishable items are marked down by 50% on the "best before" date between 8-9am, so I'll try to go during that time. Also on certain weekdays students and seniors can get 10% off their total bill. This all might sound like a lot, but its a relatively small effort when compared to the long term savings over time, especially if you have financial goals you are working hard on to achieve, or if you're on a fixed income or budget.
Same here and i always walk around the edge of the store and never go up n aisle if their is nothing on my list in that aisle. shop smart save smarter..
I found it amusing when the store manager talked about "bait and switch" as being a good thing. Here is the states, bait and switch tactics are detested by all shoppers and may even be illegal.
I live in New Zealand and when I went to England to see my sister, her English husband and my nephew. I was overwhelmed with all the other items that are available at a supermarket. I spent close to three hours in a supermarket when I went shopping for the first time. I would be hopeless because I'd spend hours at the supermarket. I tend to look to see what is one special online mailer so that more often than not I buy items on special. I say specials but we don't have massive specials for example yesterday the sweets I like were on special for NZ$2:09, the normal price is $2:29. I generally know how many times I eat an item in a month and when they come on special I'll buy enough to cover a month. I meal plan and shop to a list but of course sometimes I add a few items. I've watched videos about shoppers in the USA collecting and using coupons to get massive discounts and sometimes it means they get everything for free. It's interesting to learn about food in general works in other countries .
I'm that nightmare customer who also carries around a calculator and has a budget in cash. At the end of the day, it's how much money you end up spending each week to eat, not how much money you 'saved' on a deal (which probably wasn't a deal in the first place)
Im always dividing by two - or checking the price and the weight and i check out the cheaper brand. How much is the buy one get one free? Is the other brand cheaper if you buy two of those? In the end though you dont end up saving any money - you end up spending the whole amount you have with more/less groceries in your bag.
Nina Klos I have a calculator too but in my case it's so I don't go over my pre-set budget and that way I avoid embarrassing myself at cash register. If not, and I do go over other customers hate me and make rude comments when cashier has to take items off because I went over and don't have the money. I learned not to do that to avoid that feeling of shame. Poverty is so embarrassing! Ugh!
I am one of those as well. On my phone, I also have my "cheat sheet", where i have listed our normal items we buy all year, the regular and a normal sale price from our 2 least expensive grocery stores (all name brand and no brand items) where I can compare the penny to the ounce. That way when I'm in a different store to get that one thing I can't get anywhere else, and see something on sale, I can quickly compare it to the regular price (penny to ounce) at my other 2 stores. And coupons and calculator of course.
I always check for 2 things if i want to determine if something is worth buying. I always compare the weight/volume to the prices and offers. i usually consider if i really need X amount of something.
I hate retail theme parks ! 🤪 Growing up in a small town, with little shops dotted on both sides of the main street, shopping was fun. You brought a list. Got meat from the butcher. Milk, cheese and butter from the dairy shop. Potatoes and carrots from the greengrocer. Fish from the fishmonger. I saw this happen in real time to me. I like hearts of palm so I started purchasing them 3-4 jars at a time every couple of weeks. Those jars originally were on the very top shelf, almost out of site unless you knew to look. In a few months they were moved down a shelf, and then another right at my eye level. Then another brand appears, and now there is a less expensive store brand in a can right at my shopping level and that's the one I purchase now 3-4 cans at a time every time I shop there. I had never noticed this sort of thing before and here was an example I could see happen in real time.
Am I the only one who hates those huge supermarkets? I find it so annoying that I need to walk a football field distance staring at 1000s yogurts just to get to the staff I actually need. It simply takes too much time, so I always do the grocery at small shops/markets within 15/20 min walking/cycling distance from home. It could be more expensive, but there is no way I spend part of my weekend locked up in a hangar full of things I don't need.
Hangar, yeah. He's been to the right place alright. The frustrating part is that they're not even catered to aeroplanes. I flew down the supermarket for the first time recently, but there were so many overhead signs hanging from the rafters that I was forced to find somewhere to land - an emergency landing. I looked like a right muppet traipsing around the aisles in full pilot outfit without my plane to accompany me. I left it on the power aisle runway and when I got back to it there was a bunch of kids climbing all over it and swinging from the propellers. I couldn't take off again as there wasn't enough space for an adequate run-up so I had to ride it out of their warehouse bay doors and drive it home like a car or a boat on wheels. Not happy! Sort it out, Tescos!
You're absolutely right; Time, not price, is what is most important to me as a grocery -shopper. If a store changes its layout too often, I just stop going there, because I have more to do with my life than to spend it wandering around the aisles searching for the items I want to purchase. Also, I want the staff to be polite and to know what they're doing. If staff are rude or off-hand, I just go to a different supermarket.
I shop like Steven! I have no brand loyalty (I do like my organic, non-GMO, no-preservative products - oh and butter before that yellow chemical oil called margarine), but the price comes first with those products! I got a Safeway, CVS, Walgreens...every card out there. Cheap asses unite! lol
I shop kind of like Steven and a bit like the Rannas (sp?). I go in, get what I'm after and get out. I don't have a list, but I know what I'm after when I go in. I did check prices on some of the products and I did at some point split shop between two supermarkets. End result is I got what I was after, plus a bit extra without affecting (too much) how much I spend each month. That's thanks to my route being pre-determined based on me knowing where what I'm after is.
Worked in a factory once putting cream on cakes. They were packaged in different boxes to be sold in different shops at different prices. Just go to aldi, simples.
BOGOF sometimes you can find cheaper product x2 than the actual single price of the premium brand that is on BOGOF. Having worked in a Tesco for 11 years I am fully aware of the tricks the supermarkets implement
I have lots of little effective ways of saving money on my food shop, cooking all my meals and avoiding microwave meals as well as shopping at a Indian supermarket, Chinese supermarket as well as Aldi. Look at the price per gram or per litre label on the shelf, this gives shoppers a true idea of which items are the cheapest this label is usually smaller and remember to look at the item weight to get some real bargains!
I always do an inventory for my shop to see what I still have then do a meal and snack planner for the week ahead and base my list on this. Only tips I have is set a budget, meal plan, check your cupboards freezer fridge etc to plan ahead, take a list and use a calculator. BOGOF is great for non perishable items ie cleaning products tins toilet rolls etc ONLY if you already need or use the items. Still calculate though I did this a lot when my daughter was in nappies adding the amount of nappies then dividing it by the price they are on sale for to get the individual nappy price and most of the time it was cheaper to buy smaller/normal packs not on deal rather than the box advertised as money off. Supermarkets assume everyone is in a rush or to thick to work out it’s not a good deal. I shop mainly at Aldi prices are lowest in my area quality is good also they pay staff well. The big supermarkets take in billions and their staff are on minimum wage zero hour contracts always looking miserable so the profits obviously don’t trickle down.
Makes me wonder about shopping online for basics etc. I think there is definitely some methodology in the virtual world too. Next I’d like to see the systems put in place on that, please! 😊
the "power aisle" is the reason that tesco is messy...u pick up a pack of sausauge rolls, then around the corner, u find that they're two less than twice the price
even a tight-fisted person like me get tempted by special offers and i end up buying stuff i shouldn't buy...and mostly those things aren't required...from now on, i ll go to market with those leather eye side lids. so i can only see what i have to buy.

The bogof offers are a sham btw, as an ex employee of Tesco they put the price of other items instore up by as much as 30% to counter loss revenue on the free items, so something you are getting for free is not free as you paid a higher price for other items.
That all depends - if you shop around each week & know the lowest price points on items you buy on a regular basis, you can still save...you just have to be smarter than the store would like you to be.
my shopping motto is: don't buy anything over £1 unless you really need it. don't spend more than £15 per week on groceries. no junk food. and I usually look for the store brand, as it's cheaper. to be fair, I've been eating pretty much the exact same food for the past few years since I started to look at what my food contained and what nutrients i needed, so most sane people might not want to bother with this.
No-one MAKES you go into these places. I am old but I remember when our first Tesco opened in Hornchurch and my mother asked me to take her out of curiosity; she never went to the local shops again exvept for small items she had just run out of.

I follow a list ,only buy whats on sale ,and have a basic meal plan , also never go hungry, and keep a running total so there is no surprise and it helps keep you on budget.
they worked their butts off to get the store so tidy for the TV, no busy store looks like that 24/7. All products flushed to the edge, all shelves full to their maximum capacity... doesn't happen unless its intentional or early in the morning

I may not buy the cheapest items on the shelf, but I still get good value for money. I have a running list in my head of what the lowest sale price is on most of the items we buy on a regular basis. I would really think twice before buying anything other than produce I can't freeze when it's cheap when it's not on sale or at the lowest price point in town if it's not something I can store easily. I buy beef and lamb from a butcher by the animal - far far cheaper, locally sourced, and much more flavorful. I buy produce from the farmer's market in the summer, prep it and freeze it. I also make my own jam so I know exactly what's in it. I stick to the brands that have the best flavor & buy those consistently. I won't get something else that I might end up throwing away just because it's on "sale". What I do, however, is know approx. how frequently the items I buy go on sale. For example, right now it's lent so frozen battered fish are at the lowest price they will be all year. We will eat more battered fish this time of year because I know it's a good price for it. Yes, I could batter my own but it would be far more expensive as fresh and frozen fish from anywhere other than China is way overpriced in the Midwest USA. I also shop seasonally. It saves tons & tastes better + the turnover is higher on seasonal produce so it will generally be fresher. I will also go to 4 different stores each week just to get the best tasting, freshest, cheapest groceries. Additionally, I work for a major chain grocery/ general merchandise store that gives a once-a-year bonus of a 25% discount on a single purchase. I buy a year's worth of products that I cannot get on sale cheaper elsewhere - things like laundry soap, hand soap, toilet paper, paper toweling; and I use coupons on those items too. I am brand loyal but that doesn't mean I can't get the best deal possible on products that won't make me break out in hives because it's not a product I usually buy that my body tolerates. I also keep a running list of larger ticket items we're looking to purchase. I have waited an entire year before just so that I could use that discount to buy an office chair at a price lower than I could get it at any other time of the year. Same holds true for big ticket items in general - when my husband was looking to buy a sawzall, I spent a couple of months watching prices on the one he wanted until a really good sale came up - that's when we bought it. I also oftentimes buy something that others have recommended as a quality product. I also shop at stores with good returns policies. If I don't like it - I'm NOT keeping it. If it breaks before the returns period is up, you better believe I know where my receipt is so that I can bring it back and get my money back for it. I'm not talking about abusing the system here by using something and then returning it but rather if it's supposed to last 2 years & with normal use it only makes it one month - that's a manufacturing defect & I can get my money back. At the end of the day, it's not just about the price on the shelf - there are so many other factors to consider when looking at overall value for money.
supermarkets should wake up and see that people don't give a shit about the appearance or customer service, hence why lidl and aldi are so popular. people care about saving money, if that means having an 'ugly' display so be it. nothing beats cheap price.
just sayin . but if u compare two equally cheap and good stores then u'll go for the more comfy looking. many times Lidl looks good and clean compared to others.
Some of us care about customer service. I like shopping at aldi's because they have good customer service & it's super easy to find someone if I have a question. If a store has terrible customer service - ie. really strict returns policies or always grouchy - I will shop there as infrequently as possible. As for appearance, clean is a major one for me. I agree, having "pretty" displays isn't important, but I still want things to be tidy. Also, some of us value quality over price. I will shop where I can get the products I want to buy ideally as local and sustainably grown as possible. I hate spending money on a new "cheaper" product only to throw it away because it tastes terrible or doesn't keep as well as other items. I won't buy produce (I live in the US at the moment) from Wal-Mart unless I'm going to use it that very day because it's usually so close to end-of-life that it won't keep for nothing. Farmer's market or local grocery store produce, on the other hand, is generally much fresher. At the end of the day, the price point is only one of many factors to consider when looking at overall value for money - how well it keeps, whether it's a brand that tastes good so you will finish it, whether it goes on sale frequently so you can avoid buying it at full price if you're brand loyal and stock up when it's on sale (it may be a marketing strategy but if you ONLY buy it on sale, you're still getting a better value for money as long as you always use that product and will finish it before it expires) etc. are also things to consider.
Everyone needs a shopping list and some principles for shopping e.g. don't shop when hungry, consumer's are suckers (invest in the stock of the manufacturers), don't buy everything you need in one place e.g. you may get better & cheaper in a local farmer's market, buy wholesale if you can
I live in Toronto Canada and I don't know of any store that looks like this. They have a lot of buy 1 get 1 free stickers. I like that. Supermarkets need to start competing with the dollar store as well. This Indian family that they tracked did not have a plan which in the end leads to needless spending, bad money management and setting up your children for failure by spoiling them and not teaching them about budgeting.
That is why I stand way back from the shelves and assess offers, prices of individual items verses multiples, price per 100g compared with a competitor and then make my decision. I've taught my 15 year old twins to do the same. You can pick up on some complete madness that isn't even advertised when you do that.
I do all my supermarket shopping online for home delivery so don’t get distracted with what supermarkets call bargains or impulse buying (even before covid lockdown)
I never fall for there little tricks..I always look and compare. Let's say the yogurt 6pk is half price BUT I can get 12 from the lesser brand for almost the same as the half price one..people always falling for it
Very few people check their receipts. I now check mine in my car before I go home . Last week I found 5 items wrongly charged (offers not as they were on the shelf) . I believe this is deliberate. I always get my money back.
I do the same in NZ, three times this year I have had money returned for overcharging against stated shelf price and the checkout scan counting an item more than once. Is clearly a world wide supermarket set of tricks, not past me they don't!
*All grocery stores even in America use the BOGO to trap customers. In all actuality, you rarely ever save money. It's so important to stay on track and to force yourself to follow a budget regardless of whether you have one or not and regardless of whether you see all this bright signage.*
It's SO different here in America. I mean there is targeted displays (low for kids, eye level for adults) but I don't recall seeing yellow that much. I always compare prices and brands and I look for less packaging. Of course, products are neat and facing forward, but there's something about it that's different here.
@@noyb7051 yep that's something they really didn't go into every day items at back of the store. My local Tesco has Bread and bakery towards back left end of the store. So you have to pass so many products just to gey that loaf of bread
Shopping in the USA can vary by area/state. Some places are so cheap like Central PA and Ohio compared to the NY area. I guess other states are also cheaper for food depending on how far they have to truck it in and is it on a main route. Food was more expensive in New England (northern) than the NY metro area because of lack of section and how far they had to truck it. I liked the supermarkets in the UK when I lived there.
I don't think I've ever bought something from the power aisle. Not even once (maybe once). My route through a supermarket is pre-planned before I get there based on where I know things are so I pretty much never need the power aisle. I'm talking about when I was at uni
I like waiterose, lidl, iceland , these smaller shops in area and I take a list.I look for real bargains and find them by reading the tags.even as a young mom with sometimes a full plus extra half time job I set aside time to relax and enjoy my shopping trip.I took my son with me and taught him .Our days still have 24 hours in them, the difference now is the impatience and gullibility of people.
i meal plan, use coupons, I price check. I take so long in the store. employee asking me if i need help. I said I'm price checking to save and deals. I also check to see what i have in pantry and fridge so i won't buy extra.

If someone is shopping without a plan or a concept of what they need. Its just money trown out... You'll buy a full cart and it lasts for days instead of weeks
You can save money by buying many things at dollar stores, soap shampoos, conditioner, body wash, all kinds of things for 1-2 dollars instead of 3-4 at the supermarket or drug stores. That can cut your shopping bill by $20-30 dollars. Just make sure your getting the same size product, just for a little less cash.
All it takes is a bit of common sense. Visit the stores early evening, where there are more reduced items. Have a meal plan and budget (just a rough one, nothing tedious). Shop around. Buy a treat or two for the weekends. Live a little without going overboard
Best thing is to write a shopping list and just KEEP Your head down! Edit: Not everything that is "On Offer" is actually on bargain they fix prices so it looks like they added a discount
£150 a week??? Im a family of 4 and i spend 40-50 a week at aldi and making sure i just buy what i need. Kids are always fed and still have treats on £40-£50 a week sometimes even £30

Using a list isn't really frugal-smart. Then you miss periodic deals. So, if you wait until you run out of your soap, then you might not be able to get it at a sale price. You know you're going to buy it again, so get it at the discount price. Also, you don't know what's going to be the best deal until you get to the store. Get the best deals and that ends up being on the plate rather than planning for something specific. Note that Mr. Frugal didn't have a list, either.
I always make a list of what i really need and when i go shopping im taking the list out and i delete anything i buy from the list and of course i calculate the price of every product before i go for shopping so that i will know how much money exactly i have to spend! It always works for me! And im trying to not go in big supermarkets so that it will not lead me in temptation to buy things i don't need! Plus when i want to buy cheese i always go to a traditional cheese store! When i want to buy meat i go to a fresh meat store and the same goes with fish and the same with spices! And of course i buy vegetables and fruits from the fresh vegetable fruit market which is two times a week near my house! So i dont need to go to supermarket much! that works well for me! 😊😊😊
I didn't know this was such a big deal lol, we just go and buy what we want. I mean yeah we'll make a list for what we need for certain meals, etc. but we always "linger" and walk around.
That is why I do a shopping list and only buy what is in the list. I make the calculations of total buy, which also includes using store card savings and coupons. I take note of weekly ads. I also buy the larger bottles and tubes of everyday nonperishable items, such as toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner, detergent, dish washing soap, etc, so I don't need to buy a bottle every month (which can get expensive over time). Though lately I just buy a gallon of Dr.Bronners' Castile soap and use that to do all of my washing, cleaning and bathing. As for food, ever since eating healthy foods I save even further. Unhealthy foods are not cheaper in the long run if one counts the cost of health care, clothing, and other expenses that goes into having medical complications and gain weight from eating over-proceeded junk.
I prefer my local Aldi it's great for a single person I get all my basics and some extra bits and a 5 min walk away. Unfortunately I hear the area is going to get demolished and more flats going to get built but not keeping the shops there
Do a shopping list and stick to it! Never buy the 3/2 offers as you will probably end up throwing the so called free one out. Never accept terms for a club card! You won't really save anything and probably get more back if you shopped else where.

I’ve been stealing my weekly shopping, or at least a large portion of it, for almost 3 years. Saves way more money than trying to find good deals. P.S: Asda’s the easiest one to scam with the scan as you go tech ;)
This is interesting! I love british thing and there life style and I'm also a sucker for these types of documentaries! But it is cool that there is a science behind the retail industry and I learned this a long time ago taking a business class and working for retail for 3 and 1/2 years! At Walmart we call these power Isles, we say action Alleys, because that's where all the action is at and that's where the main Hub is and customers will go first and that's where we put all of our sales and buy one get one free stuff and then there's more on the home shelf too! Also the Dailey Rumble we call it at Walmart Zoning! Cool interesting
Frank Lucas their whole idea is to make a store brand that equals the best competitor product. thats why their products are very cheap bcuz theyre all store brands. they dont have middlemen or middle-taxes on those products so the price can be made considerably cheaper.
Jack Williams Your right. Blueberries on top look fine. You get home n open pkg n find they are moldy on btm. Now I open all fruit n look through all pkgs. Even if I find a good one, you have to eat it in 1-2 days or it will mold by 3 days at the latest. But when ur dirt poor n want fresh produce...this is the price one must pay! Ugh!

My favorite is when they run a sale on say chicken legs and the day after the sale ends they "mark down" the ones that didn't sell based on the regular price - they're always MORE expensive for that clearance price than they were on the sale price!
I accidentally printed a sign as a sales one instead of the normal one. Had no time to correct ist. Well, we sold ~50 pineapples for 3,29€.
Normal week is like 20 pineapples, and the price on sale could drop below 1€.

I probably would have gone for this. I shop for myself, so frequently the portions they sell are too large and I end up buying it, not eating all of it and having to throw it because its gone off. Smaller portions at a cheaper price would be better for me.
Making a list and sticking to it NO MATTER WHAT has really helped my family.
The special offers only really work on the greedy............the rest of us cannot afford the time or money to let greed overtake us

If someone reaches in life the truly lowest of "high rank" positions as a manager of a supermarket, of course, they have to belittle people under them to feel bigger. Do not worry about that. It is a dirty industry (liquidating farmers and small shops) build on dirt (the "managers" who employ workers on (lower than) minimum wages bullying them into high-class performance. Noone else than a bad brand supermarket would keep such managers who do not manage their instruments (the shop assistants) well any more than one would hire a craftsman who doesn´t keep their instruments in peak condition or a cleaner who doesn´t keep clean. It´s all trash.
I'd never dismiss supermarket assistants as worthless. I once cut my finger in Tesco (Can't remember how) and an assistant all but ran to customer service to get me a wet wipe and a plaster, which she putbon me
It's amazing how little has changed in 11 years since this was aired. Yes people are shopping more local and in other places again and using Aldi and Lidl etc, but the ranges and the way it's laid out and the general look of the store hasn't changed much.
More people do their shopping online nowadays than 11 years ago so yet alot has changed.

Stores dislike people like me. I get, get it and get out. I don't linger. And I look for bargains. I'll buy day old which is just as good as that day fresh. If I don't need it, I don't buy it.
I do the same. I don't linger. I don't alway/never look for bargains unless I have reason to in which case I'll get something cheaper (maybe I just want to try something else or am looking to drop the average cost of a shop). I know my route going in. I get in. I get what I'm after (I have no list though and sometimes may add one or two things, but it doesn't really affect the average cost of the shop) and get out with self service. I don't shop at a place because I have a clubcard. I will drop a place/brand if something better shows up

I often have to go to the supermarket see what is on clearance then figure out what I can make and do a meal plan that way. It is easy to stay on a budget because right now I have very little to no money. I can't splurge even if I want too.
mjname Same here, frequently I'll start my visit to the supermarket with a brief tour of most aisles and sections just to see what's on sale, because not everthing is in the weekly flyers or listed online.
With technology these days you can browse new recipes or make a meal plan based on the best value and your preferences, all right in the store as you shop.
On a side note I also noticed that at my local 24-hour supermarket, perishable items are marked down by 50% on the "best before" date between 8-9am, so I'll try to go during that time. Also on certain weekdays students and seniors can get 10% off their total bill.
This all might sound like a lot, but its a relatively small effort when compared to the long term savings over time, especially if you have financial goals you are working hard on to achieve, or if you're on a fixed income or budget.

I found it amusing when the store manager talked about "bait and switch" as being a good thing. Here is the states, bait and switch tactics are detested by all shoppers and may even be illegal.
I live in New Zealand and when I went to England to see my sister, her English husband and my nephew. I was overwhelmed with all the other items that are available at a supermarket. I spent close to three hours in a supermarket when I went shopping for the first time. I would be hopeless because I'd spend hours at the supermarket. I tend to look to see what is one special online mailer so that more often than not I buy items on special. I say specials but we don't have massive specials for example yesterday the sweets I like were on special for NZ$2:09, the normal price is $2:29. I generally know how many times I eat an item in a month and when they come on special I'll buy enough to cover a month. I meal plan and shop to a list but of course sometimes I add a few items. I've watched videos about shoppers in the USA collecting and using coupons to get massive discounts and sometimes it means they get everything for free. It's interesting to learn about food in general works in other countries .
I'm that nightmare customer who also carries around a calculator and has a budget in cash. At the end of the day, it's how much money you end up spending each week to eat, not how much money you 'saved' on a deal (which probably wasn't a deal in the first place)

Im always dividing by two - or checking the price and the weight and i check out the cheaper brand. How much is the buy one get one free? Is the other brand cheaper if you buy two of those? In the end though you dont end up saving any money - you end up spending the whole amount you have with more/less groceries in your bag.
Nina Klos I have a calculator too but in my case it's so I don't go over my pre-set budget and that way I avoid embarrassing myself at cash register. If not, and I do go over other customers hate me and make rude comments when cashier has to take items off because I went over and don't have the money. I learned not to do that to avoid that feeling of shame. Poverty is so embarrassing! Ugh!
I am one of those as well. On my phone, I also have my "cheat sheet", where i have listed our normal items we buy all year, the regular and a normal sale price from our 2 least expensive grocery stores (all name brand and no brand items) where I can compare the penny to the ounce. That way when I'm in a different store to get that one thing I can't get anywhere else, and see something on sale, I can quickly compare it to the regular price (penny to ounce) at my other 2 stores. And coupons and calculator of course.
I always check for 2 things if i want to determine if something is worth buying. I always compare the weight/volume to the prices and offers. i usually consider if i really need X amount of something.

I saw this happen in real time to me. I like hearts of palm so I started purchasing them 3-4 jars at a time every couple of weeks. Those jars originally were on the very top shelf, almost out of site unless you knew to look. In a few months they were moved down a shelf, and then another right at my eye level. Then another brand appears, and now there is a less expensive store brand in a can right at my shopping level and that's the one I purchase now 3-4 cans at a time every time I shop there. I had never noticed this sort of thing before and here was an example I could see happen in real time.
most importantly do your rough budget and take estimated cash not the card .... that's what i think is most efficient to cut down the extra costs.

Am I the only one who hates those huge supermarkets? I find it so annoying that I need to walk a football field distance staring at 1000s yogurts just to get to the staff I actually need. It simply takes too much time, so I always do the grocery at small shops/markets within 15/20 min walking/cycling distance from home. It could be more expensive, but there is no way I spend part of my weekend locked up in a hangar full of things I don't need.

Hangar, yeah. He's been to the right place alright. The frustrating part is that they're not even catered to aeroplanes. I flew down the supermarket for the first time recently, but there were so many overhead signs hanging from the rafters that I was forced to find somewhere to land - an emergency landing. I looked like a right muppet traipsing around the aisles in full pilot outfit without my plane to accompany me. I left it on the power aisle runway and when I got back to it there was a bunch of kids climbing all over it and swinging from the propellers. I couldn't take off again as there wasn't enough space for an adequate run-up so I had to ride it out of their warehouse bay doors and drive it home like a car or a boat on wheels. Not happy! Sort it out, Tescos!

You're absolutely right; Time, not price, is what is most important to me as a grocery -shopper. If a store changes its layout too often, I just stop going there, because I have more to do with my life than to spend it wandering around the aisles searching for the items I want to purchase. Also, I want the staff to be polite and to know what they're doing. If staff are rude or off-hand, I just go to a different supermarket.
I shop like Steven! I have no brand loyalty (I do like my organic, non-GMO, no-preservative products - oh and butter before that yellow chemical oil called margarine), but the price comes first with those products! I got a Safeway, CVS, Walgreens...every card out there. Cheap asses unite! lol

I shop kind of like Steven and a bit like the Rannas (sp?). I go in, get what I'm after and get out. I don't have a list, but I know what I'm after when I go in. I did check prices on some of the products and I did at some point split shop between two supermarkets. End result is I got what I was after, plus a bit extra without affecting (too much) how much I spend each month. That's thanks to my route being pre-determined based on me knowing where what I'm after is.

BOGOF sometimes you can find cheaper product x2 than the actual single price of the premium brand that is on BOGOF. Having worked in a Tesco for 11 years I am fully aware of the tricks the supermarkets implement

I have lots of little effective ways of saving money on my food shop, cooking all my meals and avoiding microwave meals as well as shopping at a Indian supermarket, Chinese supermarket as well as Aldi. Look at the price per gram or per litre label on the shelf, this gives shoppers a true idea of which items are the cheapest this label is usually smaller and remember to look at the item weight to get some real bargains!

I always do an inventory for my shop to see what I still have then do a meal and snack planner for the week ahead and base my list on this. Only tips I have is set a budget, meal plan, check your cupboards freezer fridge etc to plan ahead, take a list and use a calculator. BOGOF is great for non perishable items ie cleaning products tins toilet rolls etc ONLY if you already need or use the items. Still calculate though I did this a lot when my daughter was in nappies adding the amount of nappies then dividing it by the price they are on sale for to get the individual nappy price and most of the time it was cheaper to buy smaller/normal packs not on deal rather than the box advertised as money off. Supermarkets assume everyone is in a rush or to thick to work out it’s not a good deal. I shop mainly at Aldi prices are lowest in my area quality is good also they pay staff well. The big supermarkets take in billions and their staff are on minimum wage zero hour contracts always looking miserable so the profits obviously don’t trickle down.

The bogof offers are a sham btw, as an ex employee of Tesco they put the price of other items instore up by as much as 30% to counter loss revenue on the free items, so something you are getting for free is not free as you paid a higher price for other items.
That all depends - if you shop around each week & know the lowest price points on items you buy on a regular basis, you can still save...you just have to be smarter than the store would like you to be.

I follow a list ,only buy whats on sale ,and have a basic meal plan , also never go hungry, and keep a running total so there is no surprise and it helps keep you on budget.

I work in a supermarket. Learn one thing. People are morons. Arrogant. Impatient and entitled.
I may not buy the cheapest items on the shelf, but I still get good value for money. I have a running list in my head of what the lowest sale price is on most of the items we buy on a regular basis. I would really think twice before buying anything other than produce I can't freeze when it's cheap when it's not on sale or at the lowest price point in town if it's not something I can store easily. I buy beef and lamb from a butcher by the animal - far far cheaper, locally sourced, and much more flavorful. I buy produce from the farmer's market in the summer, prep it and freeze it. I also make my own jam so I know exactly what's in it. I stick to the brands that have the best flavor & buy those consistently. I won't get something else that I might end up throwing away just because it's on "sale". What I do, however, is know approx. how frequently the items I buy go on sale. For example, right now it's lent so frozen battered fish are at the lowest price they will be all year. We will eat more battered fish this time of year because I know it's a good price for it. Yes, I could batter my own but it would be far more expensive as fresh and frozen fish from anywhere other than China is way overpriced in the Midwest USA.
I also shop seasonally. It saves tons & tastes better + the turnover is higher on seasonal produce so it will generally be fresher. I will also go to 4 different stores each week just to get the best tasting, freshest, cheapest groceries.
Additionally, I work for a major chain grocery/ general merchandise store that gives a once-a-year bonus of a 25% discount on a single purchase. I buy a year's worth of products that I cannot get on sale cheaper elsewhere - things like laundry soap, hand soap, toilet paper, paper toweling; and I use coupons on those items too. I am brand loyal but that doesn't mean I can't get the best deal possible on products that won't make me break out in hives because it's not a product I usually buy that my body tolerates.
I also keep a running list of larger ticket items we're looking to purchase. I have waited an entire year before just so that I could use that discount to buy an office chair at a price lower than I could get it at any other time of the year. Same holds true for big ticket items in general - when my husband was looking to buy a sawzall, I spent a couple of months watching prices on the one he wanted until a really good sale came up - that's when we bought it.
I also oftentimes buy something that others have recommended as a quality product. I also shop at stores with good returns policies. If I don't like it - I'm NOT keeping it. If it breaks before the returns period is up, you better believe I know where my receipt is so that I can bring it back and get my money back for it. I'm not talking about abusing the system here by using something and then returning it but rather if it's supposed to last 2 years & with normal use it only makes it one month - that's a manufacturing defect & I can get my money back. At the end of the day, it's not just about the price on the shelf - there are so many other factors to consider when looking at overall value for money.
supermarkets should wake up and see that people don't give a shit about the appearance or customer service, hence why lidl and aldi are so popular. people care about saving money, if that means having an 'ugly' display so be it. nothing beats cheap price.

I have several stores I won't enter because it is so unplesant. So I don't share your view.
Some of us care about customer service. I like shopping at aldi's because they have good customer service & it's super easy to find someone if I have a question. If a store has terrible customer service - ie. really strict returns policies or always grouchy - I will shop there as infrequently as possible. As for appearance, clean is a major one for me. I agree, having "pretty" displays isn't important, but I still want things to be tidy. Also, some of us value quality over price. I will shop where I can get the products I want to buy ideally as local and sustainably grown as possible. I hate spending money on a new "cheaper" product only to throw it away because it tastes terrible or doesn't keep as well as other items. I won't buy produce (I live in the US at the moment) from Wal-Mart unless I'm going to use it that very day because it's usually so close to end-of-life that it won't keep for nothing. Farmer's market or local grocery store produce, on the other hand, is generally much fresher. At the end of the day, the price point is only one of many factors to consider when looking at overall value for money - how well it keeps, whether it's a brand that tastes good so you will finish it, whether it goes on sale frequently so you can avoid buying it at full price if you're brand loyal and stock up when it's on sale (it may be a marketing strategy but if you ONLY buy it on sale, you're still getting a better value for money as long as you always use that product and will finish it before it expires) etc. are also things to consider.
Everyone needs a shopping list and some principles for shopping e.g. don't shop when hungry, consumer's are suckers (invest in the stock of the manufacturers), don't buy everything you need in one place e.g. you may get better & cheaper in a local farmer's market, buy wholesale if you can
I live in Toronto Canada and I don't know of any store that looks like this. They have a lot of buy 1 get 1 free stickers. I like that. Supermarkets need to start competing with the dollar store as well. This Indian family that they tracked did not have a plan which in the end leads to needless spending, bad money management and setting up your children for failure by spoiling them and not teaching them about budgeting.

That is why I stand way back from the shelves and assess offers, prices of individual items verses multiples, price per 100g compared with a competitor and then make my decision. Very few people check their receipts. I now check mine in my car before I go home . Last week I found 5 items wrongly charged (offers not as they were on the shelf) . I believe this is deliberate. I always get my money back.
I do the same in NZ, three times this year I have had money returned for overcharging against stated shelf price and the checkout scan counting an item more than once. Is clearly a world wide supermarket set of tricks, not past me they don't!

It's SO different here in America. I mean there is targeted displays (low for kids, eye level for adults) but I don't recall seeing yellow that much. I always compare prices and brands and I look for less packaging. Of course, products are neat and facing forward, but there's something about it that's different here.

Shopping in the USA can vary by area/state. Some places are so cheap like Central PA and Ohio compared to the NY area. I guess other states are also cheaper for food depending on how far they have to truck it in and is it on a main route. Food was more expensive in New England (northern) than the NY metro area because of lack of section and how far they had to truck it. I liked the supermarkets in the UK when I lived there.

This Production was from 2007, I was wondering why the TV's where so bulky, the prices more generous and the video quality wasn't HD.
I like waiterose, lidl, iceland , these smaller shops in area and I take a list.I look for real bargains and find them by reading the tags.even as a young mom with sometimes a full plus extra half time job I set aside time to relax and enjoy my shopping trip.I took my son with me and taught him .Our days still have 24 hours in them, the difference now is the impatience and gullibility of people.

In australia price tickets all display how much it costs per 100g. So its super easy to compare costs. Not that most people do it

Buy 1 ingredient foods.
i meal plan, use coupons, I price check. I take so long in the store. employee asking me if i need help. I said I'm price checking to save and deals. I also check to see what i have in pantry and fridge so i won't buy extra.

If someone is shopping without a plan or a concept of what they need. Its just money trown out... You'll buy a full cart and it lasts for days instead of weeks
You can save money by buying many things at dollar stores, soap shampoos, conditioner, body wash, all kinds of things for 1-2 dollars instead of 3-4 at the supermarket or drug stores. That can cut your shopping bill by $20-30 dollars. Just make sure your getting the same size product, just for a little less cash.
Those dollor stores are a trap too
All it takes is a bit of common sense. Visit the stores early evening, where there are more reduced items. Have a meal plan and budget (just a rough one, nothing tedious). Shop around. Buy a treat or two for the weekends. Live a little without going overboard
Best thing is to write a shopping list and just KEEP Your head down! Edit: Not everything that is "On Offer" is actually on bargain they fix prices so it looks like they added a discount

£150 a week??? Im a family of 4 and i spend 40-50 a week at aldi and making sure i just buy what i need. Kids are always fed and still have treats on £40-£50 a week sometimes even £30

Using a list isn't really frugal-smart. Then you miss periodic deals. So, if you wait until you run out of your soap, then you might not be able to get it at a sale price. You know you're going to buy it again, so get it at the discount price. Also, you don't know what's going to be the best deal until you get to the store. Get the best deals and that ends up being on the plate rather than planning for something specific. Note that Mr. Frugal didn't have a list, either.
Too big give me Aldi any day and instead of bogofs just make the item cheaper...

I always make a list of what i really need and when i go shopping im taking the list out and i delete anything i buy from the list and of course i calculate the price of every product before i go for shopping so that i will know how much money exactly i have to spend! It always works for me! And im trying to not go in big supermarkets so that it will not lead me in temptation to buy things i don't need! Plus when i want to buy cheese i always go to a traditional cheese store! When i want to buy meat i go to a fresh meat store and the same goes with fish and the same with spices! And of course i buy vegetables and fruits from the fresh vegetable fruit market which is two times a week near my house! So i dont need to go to supermarket much! that works well for me! 😊😊😊
I didn't know this was such a big deal lol, we just go and buy what we want. I mean yeah we'll make a list for what we need for certain meals, etc. but we always "linger" and walk around.

facing up is such a ballache. i used to hate that bit of my shelf filling task.
That is why I do a shopping list and only buy what is in the list. I make the calculations of total buy, which also includes using store card savings and coupons. I take note of weekly ads. I also buy the larger bottles and tubes of everyday nonperishable items, such as toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner, detergent, dish washing soap, etc, so I don't need to buy a bottle every month (which can get expensive over time). Though lately I just buy a gallon of Dr.Bronners' Castile soap and use that to do all of my washing, cleaning and bathing. As for food, ever since eating healthy foods I save even further. Unhealthy foods are not cheaper in the long run if one counts the cost of health care, clothing, and other expenses that goes into having medical complications and gain weight from eating over-proceeded junk.
And then Aldi and Lidl arrived in the UK and gave all the big ones a run for their money. Now no one likes huge stores. How times change.
I prefer my local Aldi it's great for a single person I get all my basics and some extra bits and a 5 min walk away. Unfortunately I hear the area is going to get demolished and more flats going to get built but not keeping the shops there

Do a shopping list and stick to it! Never buy the 3/2 offers as you will probably end up throwing the so called free one out. Never accept terms for a club card! You won't really save anything and probably get more back if you shopped else where.
This is such a depressing documentary. These customers and managers talking about Tesco like they care about people and their needs. So insidious and transparent.

This is interesting! I love british thing and there life style and I'm also a sucker for these types of documentaries! But it is cool that there is a science behind the retail industry and I learned this a long time ago taking a business class and working for retail for 3 and 1/2 years!
At Walmart we call these power Isles, we say action Alleys, because that's where all the action is at and that's where the main Hub is and customers will go first and that's where we put all of our sales and buy one get one free stuff and then there's more on the home shelf too!

Frank Lucas their whole idea is to make a store brand that equals the best competitor product. thats why their products are very cheap bcuz theyre all store brands. they dont have middlemen or middle-taxes on those products so the price can be made considerably cheaper.
Jack Williams Your right. Blueberries on top look fine. You get home n open pkg n find they are moldy on btm. Now I open all fruit n look through all pkgs. Even if I find a good one, you have to eat it in 1-2 days or it will mold by 3 days at the latest. But when ur dirt poor n want fresh produce...this is the price one must pay! Ugh!
