Good Luck With That : How Employers Set Employees Up To Fail

  • It usually happens seruptiously. A manager sees that an employee misses a deadline, asks lots of questions, loses a client. All of a sudden, the manager begins the "set up to fail" syndrome by micro-managing, over criticizing, or withdrawing contact. Whether intentional or not, managers are often complicit in the success or failure of their employees. How do we fix that???

It is always the lone introverted employee who os targeted or the confident employee who keeps to himself and who the bully fears would eventually surpass him.

The innocent, the quiet ones, and the ones who mind their own business are the ones who are subject to the evil doers. When you try to defend yourself because nothing is being done and they continue to protect ect and believe the other person; it makes you look like the bad person.
I agree with the comments below. They do destroy innocent people's lives over foolishness, evilness, and choosen to be one-sided at all cost.

Happening to me right now, and when I do defend myself…they always side with the evil doers
      I agree with you 100%

Absolutely have zero respect for H.R. Management destroyed over 100 employees to include 1 suicide & with the flood of complaints, H.R.did nothing. They get paid to defend the company (management & share holders), making sure they don;t get sued & that is their singular purpose. They are our Active Shooter mentors.

Sometimes, what happens is that managers set employee(s) up to fail by unrealistic expectations, like, " I want a perfect, thorough report but I also want 20 of them, and it takes an hour to acheive a report, yet, I expect the employee to hand in perfect work, and I give them 15 minutes to get it done, when they can't possibly do it in that time. And, after they speed up, but, it's not all perfect, I get to just write that employee off as "not doing work correctly", etc., etc. No matter how fast you type, and even when the employee prioritizes appropriately, you can't avoid interruptions, other tasks that also demand immediate resolution, etc.

Great insight, and I wish my management team would watch your presentation. I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place since I'm the employee currently burning out and disengaging, though I haven't really added much extra work to impress the boss. He's already assigned me multiple roles, so I certainly don't have a shortage of things to do, and there have been conversations. Nothing major; I listen, and I accept and utilize the feedback. I'm not quite sure though how to diplomatically and professionally rephrase the question, "It was your idea to heap all this stuff on my shoulders, and in spite of all my hard work and all I've done for the company, it seems like I'm just endlessly spinning plates while my co-workers just stand around, and there's no hope of being promoted to the next position you promised me about 6 months ago. I've come to the conclusion you've set me up for failure because this is just not sustainable. Why are you doing this to me?" Although my boss has an open door policy, I know better though than to shoot myself in the foot, so I at the moment I'm not going to try.

I'm glad retirement is not so far down the road for me. Too many assholes in the job force these days!! I feel sorry for the younger generations that have 20 and 30 and 40 years ahead of them to work. Sad. 🤢

But what do you do when the manager is jealous of the employees talent, and tries to squash this - at the expense of the employee?

  • @chrismais

If anyone sees a hint of this in their professional career it is usually the beginning of a pattern of behavior that will likely continue. It will usually not get better from there. It would be time to refresh your resume and get another job offer and resign. Employers and clients seldom take accountability and HR insulates the company not the employee..so HR does not serve the improvement or the better aspect for the employee. Accountability almost always falls on the neck of the employee wherever you go in ANY company within the corporate political hierarchy.

It can start with the "gossip" , or covert workplace bully , sometimes the boss and others can inducted without knowing,as a devotee or bystander ,then you start getting belittled and sabotaged , or set up to fail .

Hands-off/Moody/Dishonest managers rely on “flying monkeys” staff to snowball setup & fail scenarios to squash employees sense of right and wrong.
The secret most employees don’t realize. Most bosses are handicapped, in that they need many people to perform duties they can not do and can not complete said tasks in the same time frame as asked of their employees. The more a boss is deficient in the skills you posses, the more you will be asked to perform extra with no backup and will be told to cross-train others or you will be bullied to fail.
If a manager indiscriminately sidelines his/her chain of command.
Her/his objective is to keep all staff confused and in the dark as a control issue.
If evaluations are Q&A and they require sentences for evaluation. This job is based not on achievement but rather obedience and characteristics the boss values in men or women.
For ex. Women are often evaluated based on friendliness, helpfulness, dress, like-ability; while men are evaluated on completion of daily duties or extra projects.
This is why there is a wage gap for men and women doing the same jobs.

if your boss is negative at start of relationship, or has personal reasons for certain assumptions about you, you can't do anything. you feel frustrated with such boss, because even you know something is not right... but can't pin point. emotional toll of this negativity is so high that it feels better to sit at home doing things you love doing than chasing someone a$$ and their approval to get pay raise... you are giving 110% but get nothing in return than criticisms, it feels waste of time... it's better to do your stuff and enjoy life than work for high paying shitty system. anyway they lose talented people like you not you.

6:15 Hilarious to hear about bias. My boss yelled at me for being "biased" because of the newspaper I read but is as sexist as they come, and even accused a client of being what he is.

20something only employee at a small family business with 60something old boss. I've been strung along for months with false promises and told to work from home with no contact. He does sales and I'm doing repetitive crap. Now he's got a new employee who is bosom buddies with his partner. She's doing more in a week than I've done in months. I am better qualified but she is an apprentice. I feel trapped because I don't want to be seen as a jobhopper. The problem is I am very shy but only because I am new to this. At the start I asked questions but learned not to when he seemed hostile towards me.
