  • I am just back from Raptor Assault in Utah at the Ford Performance Driving School and I wanted to run some back roads in Baja Mode which I think most people really find to be the best mode. At the school I was able to visit with one of the engineers that worked on the truck and confirm that running Baja mode in 2 High is perfectly fine.
    The truck will brake each wheel as needed and keep you from fish-tailing even when you try. Amazing engineering from Ford.
    Most of this video I have my electrically-actuated exhaust dumps open and the truck sounds mean. Toward the end I close them and the sound change is evident. I have another video highlighting them and their installation if you are interested.
    Before you troll me: Yes, it is stupid to drive 90 miles an hour on gravel.... but... this truck is the only one I would try it with. Also, I know there are some things done that might not be "by the book" but I am not trying to sell anything or promote a style of driving, etc... nor do I claim to be an expert on any of this stuff. Just a guy having fun with a bad-ass truck.

    I almost pity the Chevy Driver that tries to keep with you on that gravel road.

    In baja mode it keeps the turbos spooling so it gives you instant full psi boost

    Thanks for the video, was awesome to see how the turbos stayed spooled and had instant on demand torque. I bet that will snap you neck if you do that on pavement.

    Good info, on switching modes while not hitting the accelerator. Can anyone inform me if it’s the same when switching mode to sport or tow on a regular F150 2.7 twin turbo?

    Thanks for the video, finally used Baja mode on a gravel road, was confident i wouldn't lose control in the rear. Also spanked some Chevy and Ram trying to show off their V8s in Baja 2wd mode. I've had a Ram and Gmc V8s and must say this is the best, most fun truck I have ever owned.

    Nice video Matt!... I still learn stuff on my 18 Gen 2 all the time!... I bought it used/certified from a Ford dealership in 2020 & bcuz I'm the 2nd owner, I can NOT attend Raptor school... I was super bummed about that!... I think they need to change that!!... Thanks again for your video bro.... Be well & God bless🙏🏼🇺🇸

    I have been driving mine around in different modes out in the mountains... it was like driving on rails with this truck. I haven't been back in the mountains since my 5Star tune. Sport mode with the tune is ridiculous! I bet baja mode will be insane... Safe driving, glad you had a good time in Utah! ua-cam.com/video/C790Uy7sYU0/v-deo.html

    Do you get the best acceleration on the street in Baja mode 2high? It seemed quicker to me on my 19

    • @WiringSolutionsOKC
      @WiringSolutionsOKC  4 роки тому

      bossman special - Yes. Mainly Since the RPMs are held high, the turbos are spooled up and the turbo lag is cut considerably. A ford engineer at Raptor Assault told me this is just fine to do.

    Ah, so it seems that Baja 2-Hi is really working like a locked diff, but with electronic braking instead. It certainly seemed that way at a track I went to a few weekends ago. I'm ok with that. Looking forward to going to RA in September so I can ask these sort of questions. Lots of time offroad at TRR, but ended up finding Mud/Sand worked best for me and another Gen 2 owner for that trip, so really want to get a good chance to play with Baja mode full out

    • @WiringSolutionsOKC
      @WiringSolutionsOKC  7 років тому

      Yes, Baja is by far the most aggressive and also most flexible of the modes. The way the braking is also pulsed thousands of times by the truck to help build loose material in front of the tires during extreme braking was very helpful to learn.
      They did not tell us anything about the way that truck can stop with no hands on the wheel. I found that one out in the video for the first time. I am quite impressed with Ford.
      You will enjoy R/A. Excellent course for non-gear heads like me, as it was made to be easy to comprehend, but some of the actual engineers are there so people with greater experience like you can really dig deeper. My only "regret" is that I should have driven the truck harder in the gravel course. As it was, I drove it quite hard but it performed flawlessly.

    So how would a regular F-150 in 4 auto do here? I’m not exactly able to afford a raptor but a used lariat is definitely doable for me soon.

    • @WiringSolutionsOKC
      @WiringSolutionsOKC  5 років тому

      Alan The Salamander - I learned from a Ford Engineer at Raptor Assault that the various modes are the key to many of the trucks abilities. The Baja mode that I was in on this video brakes each wheel independently to build material in front of the tire when the truck starts to slide. I don't know that a regular truck would do it without a lot of driver input.

      Still have the truck and just turned 55k miles. I have never kept a truck this long... but have never liked a truck this much. I have driven this hard almost all those miles and have just recently had a front shaft seal leaking. It was covered under factory powertrain warranty. Enjoy your truck and drive it hard. No truck I have ever had could handle some of the things I have put this truck through. Mainly jumps, which seem to occur daily.

      You can select baja mode on the fly. Just be under 50mph and not accelerating at the time. Only 4 low requires you to be stopped and to shift into neutral.

      It greatly optimizes them for high-speed offroad conditions. From what I've done so far, you really have to be trying (or bad) for it to correct you. You can throttle steer to your heart's content without interference, if that's what you're asking. That said, when I go to RA in September I plan to get more clarification on this.

    Good day/evening once again my friend. I’m looking into doing the rigid lights in the front bumpers. I remember in one of your videos you had the radiance ones. Can you tell me a little more about that particular version/model. Do they throw a lot of light in front of the truck? Or they consider more a fog light setup? I’m stuck in the fence between your set up or the Raptor rigid they specifically designed for the gen 2 Raptor. Please and thank you in advance.
    Milo cheers🍻

    • @WiringSolutionsOKC
      @WiringSolutionsOKC  6 років тому

      My preference would be the Radiance series. I rarely turn the white light on, but when I do since I have three pods in each side I get ample lighting. The real "look" is the orange glow of each pod when my driving lights are on as I have them tied in to passively operate with the truck lights.
      Almost anything you put in there will look good as long as it is nicely done. I will tell you I have just turned 30k miles and have had zero issues with the Rigid products, particularly cracked glass, etc...
      Have fun with your build.

      @milovanbicanin3416 6 років тому

      Thank you once again for your time and upfront opinion(greatly appreciated). I did look around on cheaper lights but heard nothing but BIG headaches. So I’m definitely going with the Rigid. Just unplugged my AFE Scorcher Blue tuner/module. Set the truck into limp mode with check engine lights etc. Sorry to trouble you what did you run for a tuner?? I’m thinking about the MPT next?? Your expertise as always sir.
      Cheers

    Btw, what is the cost for the Raptor Assault course, and is it included if you have purchased a Raptor?

    • @WiringSolutionsOKC
      @WiringSolutionsOKC  6 років тому +1

      epiduralman - The Raptor Assault course was included with the truck, but I don’t know if that was just an introductory model year thing or not. I believe it is included with all Ford Performance vehicles as they also had the Focus RS course at the same school. The course was a must for learning the limits of your truck (you will be surprised just what it can do). Most dealers don’t even know about this, or don’t push it anyway, but it certainly taught me some things. Have fun with your truck!

      Thanks for the reply. I just found out it is free for all new Raptor owners and is still an offered benefit. My dealer definitely didn't mention that was a benefit when I picked up my truck. Thanks for sharing the baja 2WD mode! It is amazing!!

    • @WiringSolutionsOKC

      You need to keep your thumbs free of the wheel wells when driving on incredibly rough terrain to avoid breaking your thumbs. Normally 9 and 3 are nice but not possible with this wheel to keep the right pressure. Top wheel control is great for me on high speed straights but thanks for commenting.

    I was wondering about the whole changing drive mode thing. So the only thing that really matters, when it comes to selecting mode is not being on the throttle? I was scared to change it while it was in motion. I just broke the 1000 mile break in point and didn't want to take any chances. Did the Ford techs mention any recommended mileage for engine break in.?

    • @WiringSolutionsOKC
      @WiringSolutionsOKC  7 років тому +2

      babymonkey2 - I did not talk to them specifically about the engine break in but I have talked to the mechanics that have been building my truck and most performance engines do not require the break in period a typical engine might. And these are definitely performance engines. You can see underneath it that it is quite different from the standard eco-boost.
      I have driven mine quite hard since leaving the dealership with 5 miles on it. I just turned 7500 miles and it is still purring.

    • @T4nkcommander

      1000 miles is what I did. Manual says not to shift into or out of 4x4 while depressing acceleration pedal, and since all of the drive modes correspond with a switch in power to wheels, that's why you don't want to gas while choosing a mode.

    • @WiringSolutionsOKC
      @WiringSolutionsOKC  7 років тому +1

      Yes, they also mentioned fuel and spark management and how it can confuse the various computers as the modes really do make some pretty decent changes to systems. I have a whole new respect for Ford and engineers period after attending Raptor Assault.

    Is there a way to lock the lockers in 2wd?

    • @WiringSolutionsOKC
      @WiringSolutionsOKC  7 років тому +3

      JONNY JO - No there is not. Plus, I learned at the course that lockers are prone to wear more than most people think. Locking the rear differential puts a lot of strain on the smaller gears with each side of the truck trying to do it's own thing.
