My mom worked in the snack bar in the mid to late 60s. She would bring me along to avoid paying for a baby sitter. She worked for a lady named Helen who happened to own the land the drive in sat on at the time. She had a house behind the drive in with an excellent view of the screen and she even had a car speaker mounted on her porch. Thanks for posting this. It brings back a lot of memories. Dan
I grew up right down the road from where this theatre used to be. If you know where Capitol Heights Blvd is, we lived along there at the very bottom of the hill. By the time I was born the theatre was torn down, but my parents would ALWAYS drive past it coming up Marlboro Pike on our way home before turning onto the Blvd. My brother and sister and I always saw the old sign that was still standing and we made fun of the comedy and tragedy face, lol. Also I saw that house behind the theatre where you said the lady used to live, my parents said she always used to give out candy and stuff. Do you know if it's true that a fire destroyed this place? Because that's what somebody else said.
WOW this video brought back so many childhood memories I grew up in the apartments behind the theatre we used to play around there all the time. It was abandoned but it was our clubhouse until they tore it down. What a great place it was thanks for posting this video
We Lanham’s went here a lot in the 60’s. Us younger kids would get in the floorboards of the station wagon & fold the seats down, Mark would get in the tire well & when we parked, it would look like a clown car unloading! 🤣 Great times!
I remember this drive in well as a child and a teenager. It was part of the Wineland chain of theatres. They had another drive in but I can’t remember the name. There as the Coral in Coral Hiils and another the Naylor and I can’t remember the names of the others. Going to Hillside was always a treat. Didn’t matter so much about the move. Never got there early enough to use the play park, but loved it every time. It was on Marlboro Pike hence the name of the apartments Marlboro Gardens.
To Matt's Rad Show, Matt Thanks for the GREAT TIME TRIP back to the Late 80's! I've NEVER been to or even heard of the HILLSIDE DRIVE-IN, but obviously it held SPECIAL MOMENTS & MEMORIES for you! There were MANY DRIVE-INS in & around PITTSBURGH, PA that HOLD FOND MEMORIES for my wife & I. The GREATER PITTSBURGH DRIVE-IN, The WEXFORD STARLITE, The RANALLI'S DRIVE-IN, The SOUTH PARK DRIVE-IN, The GREENTREE DRIVE-IN & when i was a kid MY Parents took my Brother & i to the Classic SILVER LAKE DRIVE-IN on Washington Blvd in Pittsburgh, Pa! Matt, Your "BACK TO THE FUTURE" Tribute was really appreciated by me & I'm other DRIVE-IN MOVIE FANS!! THANK YOU SIR!! 🙌 🚗 💏 👪
I also recall going to drive-ins with my parents at Super Chief and ABC. I recall going to this theater as a kid as well and as a late teen in the mid 80's. When, I was a late teen, we had a couple in the trunk of vehicle to avoid extra charge. Also, there was a hole in the back fence which enabled the same.
I went to this drive-in many times as a kid back in the 1960's while living at Marlboro Gardens Apartments south of there. There is still an operating drive-in theater, Bengies Drive-In, in Bengies, Maryland - Baltimore County.
Just found this video, our family use to frequent this Drive-In. That funky looking shell like thing inside the screen was a Marry-Go-Round ride on the playground. It was Dome shaped, you would stand inside the groves and hold on to those handles while others would push it and spin it. We use to play on that playground.

Used to live in Oakcrest Gardens next to Hillside. Went many times with my parents. Snuck in through a hole in the fence as a teen.
Had a many of good times in the drive in when I was a kid and teenager......
The first movie I saw there as a kid was Car Wash back in 1976 and also Pink Panther....I wish they had a drive in movie theater today !!
