  • Happy Halloween!! We have a couple of little projects to finish up on Carl's front end: fender splash shields, aligning my hood, and seeing if we can fix my power antenna (since we're taking the fenders off anyway).
    Thank you so much to ‪@RetrosoundCarAudio‬ for getting a new power antenna on the way to us. We can't wait to get it back in and running!

    Rosie is very endearing to me. Have worked in Aircraft 30 years. They still make FOD posters with her.

    Loosen all the hinge bolts. Tighten them all until you can 'just' barely move the hood with effort. Gently close the hood. Wiggle the hinge end around until the height and gaps are correct. VERY gently raise the hood just enough to reach the bolts and tighten them down, snug, but not tight.
    Lather, rinse, repeat until correct. Then gak all the bolts down firmly. Done.

    It's so cool that you know about Rosie the Riveter. The history of her and the amazing women she represented during World War II is a great part of history. You are the Rosie the Riveter for today's generation of women for sure 🙂

    Ellie , You look awesome! The battery should show about 12.5 volts with the engine off. Sometimes a little higher or lower. But it showed 15 volts from the power antenna power wire. That is weird. If that voltage is right, the antenna motor might be burned out. Keep us updated on what you find. Keep smiling guys .. you rock

    • @ElliesGarage
      @ElliesGarage  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for that info. Yeah, we thought that was weird but didn't know what to do about it. We should get the new antenna in this weekend and we'll see how it goes. Thank you!!!

    • @Milner62
      @Milner62 Рік тому +1

      12.7v is nominal battery voltage at full charge. You may see 12.5v if you have a meter that has a large margin of error. As far as 15 volts goes, I think that is an error in reading. Lots of lower end meters will give false readings like that and you can also force a false reading by letting your finger touch one or both of the leads at the same time.
      I would verify the reading first before I go assuming there is a problem, its why I have a digital Matco test light that has a built in volt meter, if I ever get a weird reading on my meter I will use my digital test light to verify. In this instance I would be wary, just watch earlier on you can see the meter is not connected to anything and its bouncing around on the DC volt setting without being connected to anything.

    With power and ground at the antenna, you can condemn the antenna as being no good. It happens, it's why I am not a fan of hide away antennas because they are very hit and miss.
    On the hood latch pin, you are semi correct, the nut does act as a stopper but the nut needs to be given a slight turn to lock the pin to the hood to prevent it from vibrating loose. You dont need to crank down on it just adjust the pin where it needs to be and give the nut a slight turn to snug it down.

    Wish I would have seen this before I did my Mustang splash guards, I used the staples 😥 That was a good idea!

    • @ElliesGarage
      @ElliesGarage  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, we heard the staples were a big pain--but yours look so period correct now!! There are better screws with the spinning washers built in, but we just couldn't find them that day and we needed to get it done. Pretty sure these should still work.

    • @Milner62
      @Milner62 Рік тому +1

      I personally found staples easier. Just line up the flap where you want it mark the first two holes use a small drill bit to drill the rubber and mount. From there you just use the original staple holes as a pattern to drill the rubber. Lots of kits wants you to make new holes which I would never advise.

    Those antennas aren't great. There's about 4 different companies who rebadge the same one. So, pretty much trying a different brand will probably get you the same one. With as much work as it is to change, I might go stationary antenna.

    You can do this Ellie! Carl looks fantastic! I hope you enjoy every minute with it :)

  • @davidnimmoartsclubaudition1082

    Hi "Rosie" I would suggest stainless steel bolts for your hood latch as they will never corrode and do have a chrome look.

    • @ElliesGarage
      @ElliesGarage  Рік тому

      YES! That's what I was wondering! I'm going to go look up stainless bolts with the right size. Thanks!!!!

    • @Milner62
      @Milner62 Рік тому

      But you will need to place something like anti-seize on the threads of the stainless steel bolts. They can still corrode on the threads due to dissimilar metals. If you use the same metals you normally dont need to use anti-seize but with stainless you still will cause stainless will gall without it.

    • @ElliesGarage
      @ElliesGarage  Рік тому

      @@Milner62 Great tip! I'll be sure to use anti sieze!

    Hey Ellie. I noticed as you were checking wires that, I assume, come to and or from your radio. The 2nd wire you checked gave a voltage of 15??? I do t think it should be that high. That voltage may be what likely burned out the antenna motor. I assume that that wire came off your radio?... to activate/deactivate your antenna? You may have a radio problem which is creating your antenna problem. If not corrected, than you'll have a repeat of the same problem and have to take that fender off again. I know how much you love to disassemble that fender... lol...

    I hate those original hood hinges you can risk of bending the hood you should look into billet aluminum hood hinges with a shock and they just invented a hood hinge can open and close by itself while you still sitting inside Carl

    • @ElliesGarage
      @ElliesGarage  Рік тому +1

      That's crazy! Wow!! That's also a good tip. Some new hinges might not be a bad idea. Actually after seeing a few comments about this last night, we went out and sprayed some silicone on the hinges and it was SO MUCH easier to open and close after. It's crazy how sometimes we look right past the simplest things. Thank you!!

    I think Rosie needs to lubricate Carl's hood hinges. There's always something to do on an old Carl.

    • @ElliesGarage
      @ElliesGarage  Рік тому +1

      Wow. Sometimes we need reminders and help to see stuff that is right in front of our faces. We've been complaining to each other that the hood has been difficult to open and close, and WE DIDN'T EVEN THINK TO LUBE THE HINGES! We literally just went out in the garage and sprayed them up with some silicone/liquid wrench and it's SO MUCH BETTER! Thank you for this message! Obviously we needed it!
