It's honestly because of his generation and how different the humor was. Chase played the grumpy old man to perfection, if only he understood how great his character actually was.
It''s always astonishing to me when I remember how much Chevy Chase hated being on the show. He was tremendous. Great performances with a wonderful cast. His character was surely part of the reason the show was so fantastic. Perhaps he was unprofessional off-camera but when doing the scenes, a comedic genius. Too bad he didn't enjoy it, too bad for him, too bad for us. :(
Putting it perspective, Chevy went from a leading man to a sidekick on a sitcom. Couple that with the fact that Pierce was a very sad, unlikable character, you could see where Chevy could be a little hurt.
@Imaru Lewis That is certainly one way to look at it. But I'll take their words for it and accept (like they did) that their visions clashed and that both also acted out for personal reasons, and that the combination of that led to an escalating situation over time. In an interview Harmon at least mentions that he made up with Chevy, and that he recognizes that this was one of the things he could have done much better during the running of the show. And the fact that they both bothered to have the talk and to make up says to me (especially with the personalities both have shown) that Chevy would have had to admit partial fault for that situation to pass favorably for both of them.
Found myself back on this video somehow. I’ve a comment somewhere in this massive comment section from either months or years ago but it explained the Beef between Harmon and chase. It was just between the two of them realistically. But the rest of the cast didn’t entirely know how to take Chevy ontop of the other crap so it all fell on him rather than equal amounts chase/Harmon. It’s just two old men squabbling led to a brilliant character begin written off
Chevy Chase has had a reputation for being one of the hardest guys to work with in Hollywood, going all the way back to when he did Weekend Update on SNL in the 70s.
I thought it was really dumb to make Chang a student. And even worse that he was obsessed with being in the group. Chang was funny because he was a bully. He started to come back right after he was moved to security guard, but they took it too far and it wasn't as funny.
do you not like the episode where he expelled the study group, imprisoned the dean, replaced him with the look alike and took over the school with a bunch of kids? i thought it was great
I think the issue could really be that the writers simply did not know where else to go with his character. But I did notice that Pierce was being written increasingly as one-dimensional.
I find it really interesting that Chevy could hate the writing and yet still manage to deliver his parts in such a funny way on the show. It just shows that a great actor doesn’t have to personally think the show is actually good to deliver great takes on it.
Dustin Decker Very funny and satirical..I love his new show on Netflix. I'm glad he's back to ripping on pop culture here and the rest of this crazy world!!!
I can understand why the guy hated the writing. I feel like Chang suffered the same fate, and both him and Pierce became caricatures of their original characters from seasons 1/2 throughout seasons 3 and 4. Every character has undergone a similar transformation with the exception of Annie... Even Troy was going in that path but Glover left. The worst is Britta... At least Chang had always seemed sort of "on the edge," and he was eventually pushed to the other side of "crazy." However, the character of Britta did a complete 180 and is now so off-putting.
Dark Arts Dabbler seasons 4-6 may not be as good as seasons 1-3 but that doesn’t mean they are bad, yes in comparison to the other 3 but no they are still good by other tv show standards, disregarding 50% of the show because of a dip in quality is weird.. it’s not like it’s season 8 of game of thrones where it’s just trash all around
It is upsetting to know that one of the best shows to have come out of America in regards to comedy ahead of its time was disrupted by one of my all time favourite comedians. Puts a sour note on things.
*cough* you might wanna google a thing or to about Dan Harmon and why he was kicked out after Season 3. Some writers quit the show because of his behaviour and he led a personel feud with one of his main cast, which can never end well.
@@burnbobquist8999 Yeah, I think people give Harmon a free pass because of the great shows he created (Community is without a doubt my favourite comedy show), but harmon clearly has issues and has acted unprofessionally in many ways. I wouldn't be too surprised if what happened to justin Roiland happens to him some time soon as well.
The show is one of the most original and witty comedies on television today and Chevy's character was easily one of my favourites in it...It's a shame he didn't feel the same way.
id argue that thats season 2 Pierce, but in season 3 i really loved the character, he was amazing, he was flawed af, but he was a well balanced character
Just watched started watching Community like 2 days ago and it sucks that Pierce left. Right now he's hands down the funniest guy on the show in my opinion. Just awkward pauses and delivering his line is just so hilarious to me.
The dynamic change from the time Chevy and Donald were on the show to shortly after, was massive… I still liked the show after. It just didn’t feel like community anymore, it felt like a re-vamp. Troy and Pierce belonged in that group until the end, and I wish we could’ve seen it play out that way.
Crazy how he delivered such a perfect performance and did justice to every single one of his lines when he hated the writing. I never EVER got the impression while watching the show that there could be any tension behind the scenes
The disappointing thing is that Chevy plays Pierce so well because he's exactly like him. Season 5 may not work without Chevy in the cast to balance out that chemistry they all had.
***** I will miss Donald so much...Troy was hilarious and even though Pierce was funny as well, Donald is a dear actor to the Community fans! Season 5 is great and I think it will remain that way! Six Seasons and a Movie...we're getting there!
According to some backstage sources the comment he made was to Dan Harmon directly about the writing, he was tired of pierce getting more and more racist, he saw it as Dan doing it to him in purpose so he said something to the effect of “what is pierce going to say next n****r?” And Dan used that as an excuse to really get rid of him. The comment isn’t excusable in some sense, but it’s a far cry from just actually being an evil bigot.
It's a shame when problems like that happen. I agree with Joel, I found Pierce to be incredibly funny. The D&D he was in was absolutely hilarious, and he played it perfectly. Sad when your own life have to impact your work life.
I wish Chevy had liked Pierce as much as I did, and that he hadn't left. It was the perfect ensemble, though I will say I didn't miss Troy as much as I missed Pierce.
The "racist" stuff was bullshit, but Chevy has always been difficult to work with. His ego and self-importance have rubbed almost everyone he has ever worked with the wrong way.
Chevy is a comedian and I know people will disagree and flame me, but I personally believe comedian can say a lot of racially offensive jokes with ammunity... Long as it's not waay to far, and to far is something you nor I can think of, but we will recognize it when we hear it.
The crazy thing is when Community came out I only recognized Chevy Chase at the time (showing my age). But all the other actors weren't as famous as they are now.
He was right about his character. After awhile he was the least redeemable character. The rest of them would do bad things and try to redeem themselves. But Peirce would often just be vicious sometimes and totally unlikeable and did some irredeemable things that weren't really funny, just cruel. The other characters never acted like that. To be fair, they tried to lighten and expand him a little, if I remember right, in later seasons. But Chevy was probably already checked out by then.
i really liked the father and son relationship between jeff and pierce especially the one in the barbershop kinda reminds of rushmore and it's really heartfelt and i just really really like that scene.
I,ve seen some Chevy Chase out-takes from season 1 that were, in my opinion better than what they decided to keep. When he's writing the school jingle, i bet that was mostly improvised and it was brilliant.
Luca Google it. That came out of Glovers own mouth. The rest of the cast said there was always beef between Glover and Chase because chase seemed jealous of Glover because everyone thought he was so funny and that really bothered Chase.
@@seanwilks7712 well, I'm new to the show, I'm on season 3 watching it on Netflix, and I'm a bit surprised so many fans think Troy is the funniest, does he get funnier after season 4?🤔 I mean, don't get me wrong, I think he's funny and I really like the character, but the funniest?
Penske Material To be honest I’m not a huge fan of Troy. He does a good job playing an idiot though. I guess on the set the treated him like a genius and a god and Chevy chase didn’t like not being the center of attention.
It wasn't just that Chevy was unhappy with the character, Dan Harmon actually modeled Pierce after Chevy's life. Pierce's dad, Cornelius Hawthorne? Chevy's real name is Cornelius, and he came from a rich family. Chevy isn't racist, but he is known for having one-sided conversations and is known to be hard to work with, much like Pierce. So Chevy took it in a way where the character and writing for Pierce Hawthorne was this kind of jab at Chevy.
CarlosIsDown I think this is the most accurate comment here. Spot on - it wasn’t the writing, it was the way the writing was “sneakily” taking shots at real life Chevy Chase and everyone was in on it except real life Chevy Chase. And when he protests, it’s like “OMG you’re SUCH A RACIST!” The guy couldn’t win
pierce is one of my fave characters on the show, cracked me up almost every time he opened his mouth.so i prefer not to think about what went on in reality,im just happy he was one of them
Why make him out to be racist when the point of his rant was that it was only a matter of time before they had him dropping racial slurs on his fellow cast members? He hated that his character was racist.
This version of the interview cuts off where it should not have. I wish it wasn't cropped like this. Joel was about to say why he got along with Chevy. Here was Larry fishing and grilling him about "playing the game"--an odd viewpoint to lead the interview to, what with Joel trying to be prudent and polite about matters between cast and showrunner. Joel should have been allowed to project a well-balanced picture.
The history of this show behind the scenes is honestly so tragically depressing. This is one of the best shows of ALL TIME. But it just kept getting punched in the face ugh ):
Season 1 Good Season 2 A Gradual step up to what came next Season 3 The Banner year, the season people took them seriously as a phenomenal cast and production Season 4 A creative raping and executive backwash, that undid everything Season 5 A decent make good and comeback Season 6 it's funny, but it's not the same anymore and a sad way to end a awesome series
Look I have nothing against Chevy but hearing actors complain about writing, or hours, annoys me. Oh you had to work long hours to make more money then most of us will ever see in our life? so sorry to hear that, it must be such a hard life compared to those that work long hours and put their lives on the line to make a tiny fraction of what you get.
Let's be fair though, everyone has problems with their job no matter how much money you make. And it's not like he was complaining just for the hell of it, he ended up leaving because of those problems so at the very least it gives someone who actually wants to be there a chance to be there.
I know this post is old, but being an actor is one of the most mentally draining professions out there. I have complete respect for any top of the range actor because of the talent they have to fight to get there and how hard it is to be playing a different personality to yourself almost everyday.

"He didn't like the writing. He did not like the hourly." Sounds alot like our one and only Pierce Hawthorne

The later writing was bad.
It’s just two old men squabbling led to a brilliant character begin written off
sad and unlikeable, maybe. but also was hilarious with some of the best moments on the show in a role that revitalized his fledgling career...
If he wasn't okay with being a sidekick, he shouldn't have taken the role. (Also, when was the last time he was a leading man?)
But if he was so unhappy, why did he do the show? Did he just really need the money?
Chevy Chase has had a reputation for being one of the hardest guys to work with in Hollywood, going all the way back to when he did Weekend Update on SNL in the 70s.
And he went headfirst into Dan Harmon, who is also hard to work with. Kapoom
I thought it was really dumb to make Chang a student. And even worse that he was obsessed with being in the group. Chang was funny because he was a bully. He started to come back right after he was moved to security guard, but they took it too far and it wasn't as funny.
do you not like the episode where he expelled the study group, imprisoned the dean, replaced him with the look alike and took over the school with a bunch of kids? i thought it was great
+nathenism I loved it :P haha, I love all the differents Changs we see each season :D
I just find it funny Chang went in a full circle and is back to being a teacher again XP
yeah agreed. I think they should have kept Chang as El Tigre, that was his best character.
From this video i just realized Larry King is a bad interviewer. Joel is about to spill, and he keeps interrupting... What!?
I think the issue could really be that the writers simply did not know where else to go with his character. But I did notice that Pierce was being written increasingly as one-dimensional.
Kevin Estes That might have been because they were so pissed with Chevy.
Because Chevy worked best without anyone else around.
Agree to disagree, Pierce was possibly the most developed character of the show
i did notice that but i shrugged it off as "Eh it's Pierce so whatever"
I find it really interesting that Chevy could hate the writing and yet still manage to deliver his parts in such a funny way on the show. It just shows that a great actor doesn’t have to personally think the show is actually good to deliver great takes on it.
Seems like the natural place to end the video. Smooth as silk.
Yeah, they could of at least let him fi-
Joel is so likeable
Dustin Decker Very funny and satirical..I love his new show on Netflix. I'm glad he's back to ripping on pop culture here and the rest of this crazy world!!!
life is easy when you hit the genetic lottery and look like that
@@Umur64 Yes. Always thought he was a good looking guy and nice personality. Also doesn't seem to age.
Hah GAUUUUYYY
I can understand why the guy hated the writing. I feel like Chang suffered the same fate, and both him and Pierce became caricatures of their original characters from seasons 1/2 throughout seasons 3 and 4. Every character has undergone a similar transformation with the exception of Annie... Even Troy was going in that path but Glover left.
The worst is Britta... At least Chang had always seemed sort of "on the edge," and he was eventually pushed to the other side of "crazy." However, the character of Britta did a complete 180 and is now so off-putting.
Yes! I love the show but I hated Britta by the end :/
Yeah Chang was ruined
Ugh I hated season 4 because they made Britta actually good at being a psych major.
I think she was always (or for a long time) kinda good at psych, if you didn't notice.
Chang was crazy / sane / crazy sane, you never knew what you're going to get with him.
I rewatched community 1-3 season like a million times and it's still funny as fuck
Jack Dolah I do that too! Weirdly I’ve never seen anything past those seasons
Dark Arts Dabbler, you’re not missing much, seasons 4-6 are pretty mediocre.
Henchman #3 yup, exactly
Dark Arts Dabbler seasons 4-6 may not be as good as seasons 1-3 but that doesn’t mean they are bad, yes in comparison to the other 3 but no they are still good by other tv show standards, disregarding 50% of the show because of a dip in quality is weird.. it’s not like it’s season 8 of game of thrones where it’s just trash all around
Season 5 is pretty freaking hilarious.
It is upsetting to know that one of the best shows to have come out of America in regards to comedy ahead of its time was disrupted by one of my all time favourite comedians. Puts a sour note on things.
guess you could say community's comedy was streets ahead
*cough* you might wanna google a thing or to about Dan Harmon and why he was kicked out after Season 3. Some writers quit the show because of his behaviour and he led a personel feud with one of his main cast, which can never end well.
@@burnbobquist8999 Yeah, I think people give Harmon a free pass because of the great shows he created (Community is without a doubt my favourite comedy show), but harmon clearly has issues and has acted unprofessionally in many ways. I wouldn't be too surprised if what happened to justin Roiland happens to him some time soon as well.
@@Nightflash28 I had to check the date on this comment, but it's already happened to Justin.
The show is one of the most original and witty comedies on television today and Chevy's character was easily one of my favourites in it...It's a shame he didn't feel the same way.
"Pierce" started as an Old, confused, racist guy BUT with a big heart. Later the writers made him just a racist unlikeable guy
YES! I noticed that too and hated it. I feel like his character was a victim of both workplace and real politics :(
Yup. His character was legitimately ruined by the writing.
When was his character purpose fully racist??? I dont remember...Pierce is rude to everyone.
id argue that thats season 2 Pierce, but in season 3 i really loved the character, he was amazing, he was flawed af, but he was a well balanced character
@HelloWELCOME ToMYSHOW Y’all love not understanding satire
The last line: "Chevy can be great sometimes" LMFAO
In season 2, Pierce was a bit much, but that was part of the character throughline. I thought the writers really made up for it in the third season.
Just watched started watching Community like 2 days ago and it sucks that Pierce left. Right now he's hands down the funniest guy on the show in my opinion. Just awkward pauses and delivering his line is just so hilarious to me.
NightMare I want to be you. I wish I could wipe my memory clean and watch it again
Thanks for asking the same question seven times, Larry.
I'm thumbs-upping this simply for the fact that it includes the transcript in writing. That's goddamn amazing.
I like how Joel didn’t just start exposing Chevy, he tried to see his side and said the nice things about him
Chevy: "You guys dont take me seriously"
Pierce AND Chevy: "I’m sick of you...giving me that look you give me like I can’t get erections"
The dynamic change from the time Chevy and Donald were on the show to shortly after, was massive… I still liked the show after. It just didn’t feel like community anymore, it felt like a re-vamp. Troy and Pierce belonged in that group until the end, and I wish we could’ve seen it play out that way.
Other than rare snippets of the soup I've never seen Joel McHale's work; he seems way more down to earth and chill than I would have anticipated.
I don't like larry as an interviewer but I love his voice
Nik Zutshi He really does what?
Xzamilloh The world may never know.
@@Rashiuable the world now knows.
Joel's energy is great here... I can't explain it.
I love how Joel answers Larry's question and then Larry asks the same question again.
Chevy did a great job on that show. After he and Donald left it was never the same!
This is the most serious I've seen from Joel McHale.
Thankfully we have these videos to remember Larry.... really missin him
Joel is so hot - but it’s insane that Chevy doesn’t like the writing because the writing is incredible. And Chevy did great in it.
I love the parenthesis to say that joel is hot at the start 😂
I honestly felt empty when Pierce left the show. That was so brutal when it happened, I really didn't see that comming... - also you're hot too.
Crazy how he delivered such a perfect performance and did justice to every single one of his lines when he hated the writing. I never EVER got the impression while watching the show that there could be any tension behind the scenes
Man I'll miss Pearce's character, he was hilarious to watch, gonna miss him tbh
It’s so weird seeing Jeff be so professional.

Lol Chevy hated his character
Joe seems like such a kind guy. He comes across as so much more friendly than his character. Kinda shows off his talent as an actor
He was basically Pierce in real life as well lol
Chevy Chase was probably Method acting his Pierce character when he did those remarks
He's always been like this. Chase wasn't playing Pierce, Pierce was playing Chase.
Damn damn that was a sick line bro
Even if that was the case, does that make it ok?
According to some backstage sources the comment he made was to Dan Harmon directly about the writing, he was tired of pierce getting more and more racist, he saw it as Dan doing it to him in purpose so he said something to the effect of “what is pierce going to say next n****r?” And Dan used that as an excuse to really get rid of him.
The comment isn’t excusable in some sense, but it’s a far cry from just actually being an evil bigot.

Rest in Pierce.
Watched all 6 seasons with my friend and pierce was hands down our favorite character
Joel is just so disgustingly good at talking. I totally see how he landed the role of the pseudo lawyer.
I foolishly thought I was going to get the whole interview. How stupid of me to think it would be for free on UA-cam.
I don't like what Larry King was insinuating there...
The "racist" stuff was bullshit, but Chevy has always been difficult to work with. His ego and self-importance have rubbed almost everyone he has ever worked with the wrong way.
Why would he take the role if he didn't like the script? And once the show became successful why would that matter anymore. Very Bizarre.
maybe he liked it from the script but then as it went on they made is character worse and worse in his eyes.
I loved the show, and I knew it wouldn't last because everything I love, goes away.
I’m glad Joel and Chevy were able to maintain good terms
Joel being blunt and straightforward is rare in these types of interviews.
To be fair the rest of the interview sees mchale answering almost all questions with jokey answers

Chevy is a comedian and I know people will disagree and flame me, but I personally believe comedian can say a lot of racially offensive jokes with ammunity... Long as it's not waay to far, and to far is something you nor I can think of, but we will recognize it when we hear it.
A comedian can say racist things IF done for comedic effect. If not, it doesn't matter what your profession is.
Frik trick But he wasn't doing a bit when he went on that racist tirade, he was genuinely pissed.
Frik trick He just got a new show on TV Land. Make what you will of that.
if a comedian is being offensive in front of a bunch of people who make comedy... that guy has to be pretty offensive i think
It wasn't a racist tirade, it was a tirade against his character being so racist.
He wasn't really racist he used a racist word but whilst complaining that his character was too racist
Laurie Coulthard
He told Donald glover the only reason people thinks he is funny is because he’s black.
Sean Wilks Christ 😂 do you have a source
Luca
Google it.
Penske Material
To be honest I’m not a huge fan of Troy. He does a good job playing an idiot though. I guess on the set the treated him like a genius and a god and Chevy chase didn’t like not being the center of attention.
What kind of shoes is McHale wearing? I think i want a pair.
Jordan 1 offwhite chicago
Joel is trying so hard not to throw Chevy under the bus here. Classy.
Well, that certainly puts a spin on it. Seems like Harmon was emotionally bullying the guy if that's the case.
You did Chevy auditioned for the role to begin with???
It's crazy that Chase didn't like the writing, he had great lines and was very well written.
RIP LARRY THE KING
pierce is one of my fave characters on the show, cracked me up almost every time he opened his mouth.so i prefer not to think about what went on in reality,im just happy he was one of them
But he's one of my fav character. So sad when he's gone.
Chevy Chase's first appearance (I believe it was) on Howard Stern was absolutely hilarious. His wit, very dark humor, and comedic timing really shine.
Basically, Chevy Chase is Bojack Horseman
Just as long as he doesn't disappear for good. I loved him back before Community even existed.
The history of this show behind the scenes is honestly so tragically depressing. This is one of the best shows of ALL TIME. But it just kept getting punched in the face ugh ):
Joel is really nice guy. He is kind of guy who can get along with everyone. Surprised he is not more successful
Wish Community get a movie.
1:00 My God, that's awkward how Joel has more to say, but Larry just keeps trying to start talking over him for like 10 seconds straight 😬😬
I feel Joel shoulda took the hint there
Chevy Chase is a funny guy who just seems constantly unhappy with himself. That's the best way to sum it up.
Joel McHale looks like a mini Hugh Laurie.
This got recommended to me the day after he passed

Season 3 was were it all started to go bad. And seasons 5 and 6 were worse than season 4.
Kthulhu 6 was better than 4 and 5.
Wtf 5 and 6 were definetely better than 4
Season 1 Good
Season 2 A Gradual step up to what came next
Season 3 The Banner year, the season people took them seriously as a phenomenal cast and production
Season 4 A creative raping and executive backwash, that undid everything
Season 5 A decent make good and comeback
Season 6 it's funny, but it's not the same anymore and a sad way to end a awesome series
*edits out chevy could be great* lmfao i wanna hear more about the fun times than the ones where people are miserable
TV actors spend basically 100% of their time working. That wears on anyone regardless of how much money they make.
I know this post is old, but being an actor is one of the most mentally draining professions out there. I have complete respect for any top of the range actor because of the talent they have to fight to get there and how hard it is to be playing a different personality to yourself almost everyday.
+Christen Kimbell Chevy's net worth is 50 million, I binged it lol, I work 40 hours a week and make about 2grand a month..... if I could get anywhere near 6 figures I would work 12 hours a day, what an ignorant comment
as a matter of fact if I worked 80 hours a week at my pay rate I wouldn't even make 6 figures by the end of the year.
Why did the video cut out right when he said Chevy can be great sometimes?
