I recently bought an acrylic mat as well and it made a heck of a difference compared to filt, more than I thought it would. Especially with good produced clean cut records like Jan Timmans 'trip into the body' and Kraftwerk-like stuff 👌

I have an acrylic mat on mine from another manufacturer and paid about $60 a few years back. I've found it to help in better sound and static control. I also use a Herbie Foam pad, which helps in dampening. I've got some Celtic Frost also.

I got the acrylic mat on my Technics 1200 as well. When used in tandem with a record clamp, it makes things more stable and subtly settles surface noise as the needle isn't riding up and down. Highly recommended!

A couple months ago, I bought the Hudson acrylic myself, but got the white one. It really makes translucent colored vinyl pop. I keep my other rubber mat under it to increase in dampening. I'm not sure if I notice much sound difference, but the placebo affect says it is cool. :)

Hi Frank, I’ve been using the exact same Hudson acrylic mat for over 12 months. Makes zero improvement to the sound but then I really didn’t expect it to. However I think it looks good and I definitely get less static charge now. The only downside, the odd 45 can slip on the acrylic but my record weight solves that issue.

I have an English made acrylic platter that was carved to perfection. It is simply better than any other platter material. I also have Hudson acrylic mats on my Thorens metal platter. They both do their job well enough.

Two years ago I moved from cork to a Hudson Edge-Lit acrylic. The improvement in clarity across the frequency range was very audiable on my Source/Odyssey/Art9 rig. Not to mention it doesn't doesn't cling to the record like a cork or felt mat. I would say though that you need to use a weight or clamp to get the best out of these very low friction mats.

Had some of the 2015 Rush vinyl pressings that looked like they were warped when playing. I bought the Husdon HiFi mat and when I dropped the records on it. they were TOTALLY flat. So, the issue with them was the label, and the recessed center for the label fixed the problem. For that alone, they were worth it.

Hi Frank. Good to see your back in the saddle. The appropriation of the video monitor is a great idea. I'm sure your creativity will be on full display. I used to use a FunkFirm mat on my TT but have since put into a drawer, My albums are riding bareback on the stainless platter, since I use an outer ring and a center weight that is quite heavy. This couples the record snugly to the platter and the result is background that is super quiet. Cheers. Greg

I was getting bored with the old rubber mat and just got my first acrylic white mat. It is for my SL1700 mk1 but do want a Hudson one for my 1210 mk2 once I get it fixed. I didn't expect any sound improvement but I do like the sound and it does keep the vinyl very flat and no static. The only thing I would have liked is for them to be just a little thicker. The new mat is lower than the rubber one.

Hi Frank. I got the same platter mat and while I agree there’s no “huge difference in sound”, the bottom end IS tighter, enabling me to play some of my bassier albums without turning down my bass. I had some records that would make my speakers pop and always had to turn the bass down by at least one level. But using this mat I no longer have to. Definitely a difference there!

A great album that has the Mexican Radio cover and another track that sounds like a Nightclub track. A really bizarre album as they wanted to do their own thing, be adventurous and go against the grain. It was highly rated in the press at the time and is a classic.

So I broke out the airbrush and black acrylic paint I use for model cars and painted the bottom side so I don't see the holes in the platter. The subtle audio differences mats make, including this one, are mainly with noise levels due to motor or belt rumble, platter vibrations, record dampening, etc. This can be seen quite easily when overlaying the spectrum analysis of material-free sections on records, such as inner groove, outer groove, track separators, or audio-free test tracks on Hi-Fi News, etc. Only then can you scientifically see differences. Whether you can actually hear differences in audio playback is a far more subjective task, and only discernable when A-B'ing the same track in a player (or in my case Audacity or Foobar), where you can line each track up perfectly and switch between them while listening.

Question on the acrylic mat. I'm always afraid that the vinyl could "slip" a little while spinning & if that happened if it would scuff the vinyl. Do you use it with a weight with it? Also love loose ends by Hendrix. I have a first pressing from the 70's on Polydor, has one of my favorite Jimi songs, "The Stars that Play With Laughing Sam's Dice". This acrylic does change the sound thats true but you change more then the influence of this platter.
thickness of the acrylic is different then the thickness of your old mat
So what happens is the arm raises or lowers in height this is also called VTA this influence changes more to the sound then the acrylic itself.
So you myte change more then you want.

I purchased said acrylic mat in orange. While cool looking, I hated it! Bass notes were overly accentuated. The resulting sound was cheap sounding I likened to setting bass control on max. I returned to the felt mat supplied on my Audio Technica/ Technics 1200 clone.
I have since switched to a Thorens 209. A better table by far. It is supplied with a cool acrylic mat. Hated it for same reasons plus terrible static charge. I immediately purchased the Thorens leather mat. A great improvement.

Will it scratch the record though?

Sweet! Right on! Happy that you love the stuff!. Very intrigued about the mat. Especially at that price.. I think it would be worth for the static decrease alone! Would it be silly to put an acrylic mat on an acrylic platter?

Thanks again Gil! Amazing selection of records you send over. The mat is great... I think you are already seeing the benefits of acrylic on your deck. No need for a second one (may raise it too high).
      Cheers

How to clean that acrylic platter up? Is it hard to clean? What do you use for that? Thanks!

Glad to see you again! And I'm glad your family had fun this summer.
Are you doing or have you done a video on the RSDs this year? I scored the Elton John and Ace Frehley records.

Congrats on the pickups! I was actually out of town last weekend, and missed the August RSD drop. We rented a cabin, far from civilization. I did grab the Fight album online for a good price >> $27.99. Bit I am still waiting for it to arrive.

Hi, I tried using the Hudson acrylic mat but ran into a problem when using my anti static brush on an album. The acrylic mat, continued spinning but the album wouldn't spin.... Hence I can't clean the vinyl properly. Any ideas ??

Your pushing too hard. Should just graze the lp. Carbon fiber is static charged so dust sticks to it. Put pressure and you just jam dust in the groove. Clean lps. Dusting is minimal.
Try a vacuum rcm some surfactant and rinse & some nice nylon record brushes. Avoid hard animal hairs.
Pushing your charging the record as a result and it will never get clean clinging to dust. Your chasing your tail at that point.
Non ionic cleaner equals static reduction

& brush with the table off. That will solve it. Its better. Try a long hair pomp pomp style brush instead. I hate those Audioquest kinds.

9:50 Not only was Michael Myers wearing a mask in the 'Halloween' movies (except 'Halloween III' of course since he had nothing to do with that story), but the mask had apparently been adapted from one made of Captain Kirk himself, our very own Canuck to the Stars, William Shatner, so there's some Canadian content for the 'Halloween' series. :)

I have a blue acrylic mat, which looks great on my AT LP 140. Before the acrylic mat, I had both a rubber and a cork mat on my TT. The acrylic mat sounds great, and I can definitely hear the bass (I can feel it in my chair too!).
I highly recommend the acrylic mat to anyone who wants to upgrade your mat from felt, or to replace your current mat for one that will give you crisp highs and a good bass.
I should also mention that Hudson Hi Fi sells acrylic mats in different colors and not just clear. As I said, mine is blue, and I saw a green one on a video from another vinyl channel. So you can customize your vinyl setup in this unique way!!!

Hi Frank, does the additional thickness of the acrylic mat vis-a-vis a felt mat impact the tracking angle etc...thanks in advance...

I have this, but sometimes the records slide on itwhen I'm dusting. And I can't usually play 7" or they sound awful... Is that bad for my records?

What about the stock rubber-mat that Technics made for it, the one with concentric circles that get lower in height going towards the middle.
