Attack on Titan uses compositing. The buildings and backgrounds are almost always 3D CGI in the action scenes and then 2D animation for characters and titans are placed over it as a "virtual camera" moves through the space to give the illusion of the 2D characters moving through the space. While WiT studio is talented many of the best scenes in this series are done by Freelancers! Ah a fellow code geass enjoyer. It is definitely in my top list as well. It has its fair share of problems, but the rest is so enjoyable that I forgave it all its sins.
I think a lot of the confusion on gender for anime and manga in general comes from japanese to english translations. In japanese there are non-gendered pronouns that are not exclusive to non-binary people, and sometimes people will use pronouns for the opposite sex even if they are cis themselves, which overall leads to a lot of confusion whenever it comes to actually translating these pronouns, especially whenever a gender is never outright stated. In Attack on Titan however, i think there is only one confirmed non-binary character (or at least a character who's gender is meant to be "ambigious"), which is Hange (the glasses wearing and titan obsessed member of the scouting corps). But because the anime had to settle for a voice actor eventually, they gave Hange a female voice and overall shifted more towards a female identiy for them, but technically it is ambigious and never actually stated.
Trying to identify what gender an anime character considers themselves can be messy. Languages often have imperfect parallels to english male/female gendered terms and can be highly usage dependent. For instance, the Japanese male form of the word "I" is often used by badass, tomboy, or otherwise less effeminate characters who still very much identify as female. I believe Mikasa does this at several points, and she still identifies as female.
I have zero idea what people mean by "the non-binary meme", genuinely. Nanaba used gender neutral pronouns in the manga and was way more androgynous, which was changed in the anime. The only thing I can think of is that the people saying that are the crowd who think the anime's censorship of Nanaba and Hange were "confirmations" of their genders.
Good early lesson that a big part of this community can be pretty dumb, but at least she didn't meet the intersection of them that spoils things first. Gotta proceed with caution in comment sections, especially after some more spicy themes come up that might trigger a negative reaction from them for disagreeing with things.
As far as I know none of the characters have been specified as non-binary by the mangaka, just left vague because of character design but when characters like Hange were animated she was made more feminine. I know people want to be respectful but not specified is different from non-binary, characters are only non-binary if the creator themselves says so. Not the VA's, not the animators and certainly not the fans, it has to be the creator. Rico has always been a she and Isayama told his editor 'either is fine' when it comes to Hange and everybody pretty much defaulted to she.
I am pretty sure the whole titan managment is not them controlling the Titan body, but they´r own emotions. eren is a man of 0 restraint, and i am 100% certain he attacked mikasa because she just pissed him off with her being all protective, and the first thing he sees is her... Sad L for mikasa.
did you know the author is so he foreshadowed erens titan ability in the bootcamp episode when he hits his head its steaming after and he steams when his injuries heal
I just wanted to bring up that animation quality isn't actually about the budget; that's a common misconception. Most anime actually have the same budget and there are only really rare cases where it will be a little bit more or less. For example, OPM s1, often considered one of the pinnacles of animation, doesn't have drastically more budget than something like Berserk 2016, considered one of the worst animes when it comes to animation. Though AoTs budget is a lot less than what it costs to produce which did cause Wit Studio, the one who made s1-3, to go bankrupt, that still wasn't the main reason (They're better now but it was a super bad situation). Budget of course plays a part, but the quality is more so determined by the production behind it, be it time, talent, or priority. AoT specifically is known for having a terrible production in the time aspect, which was a super prominent problem in the last 2 seasons. It had the talent though which is why scenes still look so good. S1 had a lot of stills and off-model shots due to the production and choices made; also how they prioritized the episodes. Sorry this is long, just thought I would share.
15:25 1st of all, wrong character the character their talking about is the one with levi who's horni for titans. 2nd of all, in the manga she's androgynous, not non binary because the mangaka wanted to leave it to the reader at the time. 3rd of all in the anime shes a woman and the mangaka confirmed that the anime is supposed to be the finished product and the manga is the rough draft so canonically she's a women. so without spoiling anything just know that before the manga even began in 2009, the mangaka already had the ENTIRE story planned out. anything that is different in the anime is 100% intentional cause the mangaka works in the anime writers room as well so somewhere down the road he decided to make her a women. just thought i'd clear up the confusion.
That's kind of a poor argument. There are plenty of examples of censorship throughout the show that don't reflect the author's intentions or the finished product of the story. One example would be the tatoo Mikasa was shown to be getting in her flashback, which was censored in the anime against the author's wishes. Trying not to spoil anything, the tattoo holds significance later on in the story, so we know for a fact that the censoring was opposed to Iseyama's vision for the story. With other aspects of the story, this is a good argument, but when it comes to the topic of censorship it's largely a mute point.
@@suzuxiiiahdv I'm aware that not everything is what the author wanted so you make a good point, there are other examples of this but i'm not gonna bring them up cause i don't want to spoil her so ill just leave it here.

That's the same for me with code geass and aot both anime have some of the best scenes of two characters just talking to each other. To me when show can do that repeatedly that's when you get to masterpiece level. As for the nonbinary thing, there is a character that is nonbinary. But they aren't in the story yet.
I know this vid is a lil old (I’m catching up on your S1 reactions now that you’ve started watching S2) but wanted to say that I really appreciated what you said about not liking people making a joke or meme out of a character being or not being nonbinary (~16.5 min in). Although that sort of joke can unfortunately be a bit prominent in some anime fandoms, it’s one that also bothers me a lot and that I have heard be grossly applied to actual irl people. I hope those sorts of jokes will see less prevalence in fandoms soon and that we can all receive more positive representation ❤
Don't regret seeing it sooner too much. At least seeing it late means you only have to wait for the next part to air for month or even years once. :P As far as I know there is no actual (or actually confirmed) non-binary character in all of AoT. There is however Hange where thanks to the quirks of the Japanese language, it's completely unknown whether Hange is male or female. His or her gender and sexuality does not come up even a single time, so anyone's free to make up their own mind. The anime gives Hange a female voice so more people lean toward Hange being female and all the dubs outright call 'her' 'she', but the manga leaves it completely unaddressed. Anyone who says there are definite non-binary characters in the show is either mistaken, trolling or has information I'm not privy to from outside the anime and source material in which case I'd very much like to know their source. Hmm.... unless you consider Hange titan-sexual. Considering that the only thing that seems to turn them on are titans, that might well be the case. :P The same might also be the case for the glasses wearing officer, but I don't know about that case.
Hey, I'm really enjoying your reaction, but I'd suggest to get a better audio level on your voice, sometimes it's so quiet I struggle to understand what you're saying even with my headphones at max volume. To avoid clipping on the louder parts maybe use some compression (if that's an issue, otherwise just bringing up the volume would do). Hopefully I didn't sound preachy or overly critical, just caring about your commentary and wanting to hear it clearly 😄
The WHAT meme???? I'm honestly so confused why people are using being nonbinary as a meme, which is pretty messed up in my opinion. But I'm mostly just confused on how I somehow didn't know something so widespread because I've been in the community for years? Anyways, as far as I know, the only person who is non-binary in the manga is Hange Zoe (crazy scientist ponytail glasses peep who is on Levi's Squad)
Just a FYI everyone will do the same meme again with Hange. Everyone wants to extrapolate the fact that a few soldiers call her sir that she is non binary or somewhere in the sexuality spectrum. It’s one of those things that people get upset either way so just go with what u want. Either side will go insane like they always do with everything that can be made slightly socially political.
I am not aware of any implied or explicit non-binary character in the whole series. I've never encountered that meme either. We have several theoretical/potential/implied same sex romances, but as far as I am aware nothing beyond that.
i think the "non-binary meme" is like an inside joke in aot communities for rico and hange's gender has not been specified by the author nor in the manga itself, idk
I don't know about any non-binary meme (sounds like some tripple or quadruple sike), but I wouldn't strain myself to use neutral pronouns if the character doesn't state their situation as requiring that. If it's just as easy or easier, then yeah, you might as well be extra considerate. However, since the show hasn't given any indication of any non-binaries even existing in that world (besides the titans lol) it seems like a lot of trouble to involve something unrelated
Aight so here's the deal, Rico is, to most people's knowledge a woman. Thus she has she her pronouns. Hange (Sasha 2.0) is actually left ambiguous most of the time, so they'd probably fit non-binary. However I don't think people will hate you for calling them her/him. Forgive me, things like this confuse me but I don't want you to feel bad either.
I know I'm late but Rico is female. I'm not sure why your commenters were making non-binary jokes, that's not nice. Hange's gender however was never confirmed was deliberately left ambiguous. Isayama has never treated the sexualities, or genders of his characters as jokes.
15:55 there's no meme. i forgor what Rico's pronouns are but Hange is canonically non-binary in the manga and she/her isn't used for them except in the anime. there are people who will tell you hange is not non-binary because the author "didn't reveal what their gender is" but that's just not true. The author told the editors specifically to never use she/her or he/him for the character. Where I come from we call that non-binary. It's really nice to see good representation in media, even if some parts of the fandom don't want to recognize it! :D
16:33 Everything is a joking matter on the Internet. Representation isn't presentation, just like stories aren't reality. If you can't laugh with it, it is always better to make some fun of it.
This show's fans do like to imagine things. They read mistranslated snippets of interviews with author and come up with wildest shit. There's no nonsmth characters There's no absolutely planned out from the very beginning story There's no *insert your fanfic* Isayma is just a dude and it's a simple story.
But because the anime had to settle for a voice actor eventually, they gave Hange a female voice and overall shifted more towards a female identiy for them, but technically it is ambigious and never actually stated.
that's only the cas with hange in the manga, not the anime, wit studio specifically stated she's a female, not ambigious or non binary in the anime
Spoilers
Than why did Falco attack Pieck? I think it's just that the first couple of transformations are out of shifters control
did you know the author is so he foreshadowed erens titan ability in the bootcamp episode when he hits his head its steaming after and he steams when his injuries heal
Cliff-kun came to hang out.
11:03 Remember last episode where Pixus commented on wanting to be eaten by a beautiful titan woman? Well...
Oh this episode is literally called "Peak Sheesh" I no longer feel like a clever boy
LOL great minds think a like homie :)
@@aliciaxlife YO! While I have you here, just wanted to say I'm a brand spankin new viewer. Just started viewing your CSM and AoT reactions like a week ago, loving it! Very excited for you to react to the rest of AoT! Also I love what you bring to the table with your knowledge of film theory and whatnot, makes it very interesting to see your reactions even though I've rewatched AoT several times. Also love the unique VR aspect of the reactions, and your personality makes the whole thing very enjoyable and brings me back for more. Keep up the great work, can't wait to see what future reactions may bring!
It's cool hearing you like code geass as somebody who got roped into watching that recently. It's so fire
12:20 That was not Armin's dad. It was his grandfather.
13:00 Code geass is also my favorite anime
such a smart, political anime! AoT have the best depiction of military in all anime(fullmetal brotherhood level), you'll love it as well
Hi, I recommend watching the Blu-ray version of Season 1 on Funimation if you get the chance as episode 13 and 21 as well as other episodes lack polish, reuse animation alot or have major errors in them. Season 1 Tv version suffered alot in quality compared to Season 2 and 3. I'd love for you to experience season 1 in its finished form. Season 2 and 3 and 4 Blu ray version is not required unless you want some more gore and minor touch ups
AoT made me god dam patriotic for the titan slaying army
*_O F F E R Y O U R H E A R T !_*
12:41 if you're already that impressed by pixis, wait for the hype Machine Erwin Smith, the commander of Scouts!
8:40 Yeah, I think everyone has great potential value, you just must let them find their thing.
22:24 I just realized. When you blink is the shadow for your hair moving with it?
RIP Mikasa
Alicia, if you want to geek out more, I recommend the overwatch cinematic series. The animation on that is really good
The white haired girl goes by she/her, the glasses one that hangs out with Levi and has brown hair is nonbinary, I was the one who left the initial comment sorry if it was unclear who I was referring to!
That's the same for me with code geass and aot both anime have some of the best scenes of two characters just talking to each other. To me when show can do that repeatedly that's when you get to masterpiece level.
As for the nonbinary thing, there is a character that is nonbinary. But they aren't in the story yet.
If your show can keep my ADHD riddled ass focused even through dialog heavy moments, then you got yourself perfection.
14:28 the jiggle physics xD
19:28 how many times must Eren headbutt Mikasa? 🤕
As far as I know there is no actual (or actually confirmed) non-binary character in all of AoT.
The same might also be the case for the glasses wearing officer, but I don't know about that case.
Oh cliffhangers
THE PAIIIIIIINNNN
It only gets better. IMO ever season is better than the last.

From what I could tell, the only confirmed non-binary would be Hange, which you barely saw in Levi's team.
As far as I know, there are no non-binary characters in the show/series. Not memeing.
i think the "non-binary meme" is like an inside joke in aot communities for rico and hange's gender has not been specified by the author nor in the manga itself, idk
aye, I really hope that's what they meant and not some troll being bigoted
I don't know about any non-binary meme (sounds like some tripple or quadruple sike), but I wouldn't strain myself to use neutral pronouns if the character doesn't state their situation as requiring that.
If it's just as easy or easier, then yeah, you might as well be extra considerate. However, since the show hasn't given any indication of any non-binaries even existing in that world (besides the titans lol) it seems like a lot of trouble to involve something unrelated
Rico isn’t non-binary.
Aight so here's the deal,
Rico is, to most people's knowledge a woman.
Damn, I'm early
15:55 there's no meme. i forgor what Rico's pronouns are but Hange is canonically non-binary in the manga and she/her isn't used for them except in the anime. there are people who will tell you hange is not non-binary because the author "didn't reveal what their gender is" but that's just not true. The author told the editors specifically to never use she/her or he/him for the character. Where I come from we call that non-binary. It's really nice to see good representation in media, even if some parts of the fandom don't want to recognize it! :D
That's not the non binary character.
16:33 Everything is a joking matter on the Internet. Representation isn't presentation, just like stories aren't reality.
If you can't laugh with it, it is always better to make some fun of it.
Gender talk.... not my thing i only see 2, + delusions no offense
This show's fans do like to imagine things. They read mistranslated snippets of interviews with author and come up with wildest shit.
There's no nonsmth characters
There's no absolutely planned out from the very beginning story
There's no *insert your fanfic*
Isayma is just a dude and it's a simple story. Let people enjoy/experience it on it's own merit and see what they seeing themselves
Well, I wouldn't call attack on titan a *simple* story lol, but yea people read into things way too much
