Russia is engaging in a "creeping advance" - vs. large spearhead attacks to take vast swaths of territory. I suspect this will allow them to build fortifications and not overstretch their forces, where Ukrainians could engage in pincer movements to cut them off. It could also be an attempt to divert more Ukr. forces to the north and weaken them across this very large front.
If they take petropatvaka in will allow the russians to drive directly south cutting off supplies to the eastern River. Where the russians have already made a bridge head farther south. They can use it as a two pronged attack to capture some 32k Ukrainian forces off guard which would be disaster for ukraine, as the entire northern front would be exposed. Kharkiv would be wide open for recapture by the russians. The russians withdrew last summer to sure up defenses, and it looks like their decision paid off so far. They have taken more land in 3 days than ukraine has taken in 2 months
Interestingly, this mirrors the two Chechen wars. In the first war, Russian forces attempted to blitz through Grozny, but the spearhead fell apart with heavy casualties. In the second war however, they opted for a slower, but a more secure advance. Although their performance in Ukraine has been ridiculed, the Russian army for sure have come a long way since 1994. :)
Ukrainian soldier who lost his leg in battle told The Washington Post that he wouldn't volunteer to fight for his country again - expressing a rare but growing pessimism around the war. Ruslan Proektor, 52, told the outlet in a report published Thursday that he lost his leg this summer after stepping on a Russian mine. The soldier who rescued Proektor also stepped on a mine, causing additional injuries, he said. Proektor, now recovering in Kyiv, said that if he were given the choice to join the military now, he would not sign up. "They are taking everyone and sending them to the front line without proper preparation," he told the Post. "I don't want to be in the company of unmotivated people."
52 year old soldier tells you all you need to know. Ukraine is running out of manpower. They are reaching the tipping point. Soon the Russians will find a spot that will break. Then we will see significant advances, encirclements and the end of the conflict.

Ukraine's counteroffensive basically means they instantly receive a first class ticket on the Bandera express which will take them to their hero Bandera. By the way, it's a one way ticket, Bandera express doesn't do round trips.
I can only hope for peace at this point. Further into the war it will get bloodier and bloodier as more people will be drafted and sent to their untimely demise. Peace for all...
Peace have a cost that any side wants pay, after 1 year and half of war Russia cant accept anything less than Ukraine neutrality and recognize of some territories, and if the ukrainian government accepts that will be overthrown for the same nationalist units they have cheered as heroes, and doubt USA let them accept a deal that includes neutrality, so seems this will be a war to the last ukrainian, as Russia has much more population is Ukraine who will reach earlier a collapse point

Ukraine's fighting capabilities were grinded down by constant heavy battles. Therefore, launching an offensives almost immediately after the capture of Bakhmut(while the battle for Bakhmut de facto is still going) was a mistake from all perspective, except for political. Now, Ukraine found itself without any free reserves for the first time in the war.
Could we take the fact that Ukraine is surrendering this territory instead of trying to fight over it as a signal that they dont have any more meaningful reserves they can throw around without threatening their strategic security? With Svatove they threw their weight back and managed to halt that massive breach but here so far they are quite passive...

This is one of the biggest weaknesses of democracy. It take countries months and sometimes years to decide something. USSR gave its best fighter jets to China as soon as Korean War started but it took months for western countries to supply Ukraine with tanks and fighting vehicles needed for the counter offensive. Russians took advantage of that and build several defensive lines when Ukraine was waiting for their equipments . Not to mention that it took more than a year for western countries to finally let Ukrainian pilots practice with jets from 30 years ago . Seeing the current situation and the time left until summer ends , I don’t think Ukraine would manage to do any major advances. And if they fail to make any big progress in this counter offensive, which is likely to end when the rainy season begins , they would have to wait for like 6 months for another counter offensive. The important part here is that Russians aren’t just gonna watch them and do nothing. They will even build more defensive lines and will put 10 mines in every single meter . This is not looking good for Ukraine. Russians are literally building fortifications in every place they gained .
Ukraine really is screwed in the kupyansk area. They have no heavy/serious defenses. Not a lot of artillery, Out numbered, badly damaged units with no reserves No airpower, Barely any air defense, And low morale. While russia has complete air and artillery superiority. Fresh troops with tones of reserves. Plus, lots of armor support (that they haven't even needed to use it)
I believe the Russian goal here is to make it obvious they are not going to be pushed out of Ukraine, and negotiation is the best approach. This is why so much work was done building multiple layers of defence and not focusing on attack - they are being very conservative with their advance despite the overwhelming advantage they have in almost every area.
US will not let Zelensky negotiate that is why they are planning to conscript 16-18 year olds for the AFU. The US will not allow Zelensky to stop until Ukraine is destroyed and no longer useful. @@GuaranteedEtern
If people were following the Syrian War they would have noticed that a lot of the areas captured by the Syrian Army was done by negotiations with the opposing forces, in other words they didnt have to fight for every millimetre of land. The Russians are employing the same tactic here after destroying the forces pitted against will go into some form of negotiation and just move the border to the edge of the areas already annexed.
Let's hope you are right, though that's going to be pretty difficult seeing as how Elensky has said there will be no negotiations with the Russians and how the USA and the UK would want to prevent it for political purposes.Let's hope western ukrainians wisen up and surrender unconditionally to Russia, otherwise they'll be utterly defeated like the French and the Germans.
Wondering. How well are the Ukrainians being treated in the "annexed" areas? As well as they were before the areas were occupied? Are they allowed to travel to other countries?
I am so fortunate that i am not a soldier in Ukraine forces. I have experienced terrible things. But this would seem like a death warrant What media i saw in west today said Ukraine doing great This seems to be the first drone war. Humans are doomed
In fact, 1. I see no reason why Russia would permit Poland to take "its" so-called historical used-to-be Polish part of Ukraine without any right or fight; 2. I see no reason why the USA would permit Poland to take "its" part of Ukraine whereas the USA invested a lot, a tremendous amount of money, energy and weapons, without gaining anything. At the end of the day Poland will not take a single square metre of "Ukraine". Moreover, any move by Poland on the Ukrainian ground may cost Warsaw a strategic loss of ground, the corridor between Kaliningrad exclave and the Belarus border. It would be a catastrophe, since it would definitively separate Poland from Lithuania. @@Sedona-cl6eg

Withdraw and leave mechanized units behind to cover. Mechanized unirs are pulverized these days by drones and arty and aircraft. Kharkov and kupiyansk are not a real target. If they come there they will suround it and move on.
urozhaine will be taken today or tomorrow and robotyne (or whats left of it) will fall within a few days but the comedians shoigu and gerasimov are aiming for kupyansk with 26,000 pre-war population instead of helping out their friends in the south
Ukrainian forces are in apparent retreat to new defensive positions along the western bank of the Oskil River, relying on mechanized units to cover the retreat. The Ukrainian probes across the Dnieper River much further south are likely intended as a distraction while the repositioning in the north proceeds. Perhaps this will go well and Ukrainian forces will stop the Russian advance along the high ground east of the Oskil. That said, the big immediate test for Russian forces will will be how well and how quickly they can conduct and SUSTAIN a major offensive operation like the one unfolding east of the Oskil -- while simultaneously maintaining the integrity of their defenses elsewhere along the line of contact. A rapid Russian victory in the north -- especially if it causes a broader unraveling of the Ukrainian forces -- could panic NATO or certain NATO members (i.e., Poland) into threatening a direct military intervention in Western Ukraine. This threat, if it is ever voiced, might include the identification of a geographic "red line" inside Ukraine that would trigger such an intervention if crossed by advancing Russian forces. Should this scenario occur, I would expect Moscow's interest in direct negotiations with Washington to increase. Why? A NATO military presence in Western Ukraine would contradict Russia's war aims of demilitarizing and neutralizing Ukraine, and it is something Moscow would obviously want to avoid. But would Washington engage? That is one question. The other is how far and how fast might Russia advance should the Ukrainian army break down. Could Russia confront NATO with a military fait accompli before NATO can decide what to do? I don't know. This is all speculative analysis on my part, but it is worth considering as the general trend is now shifting further in Russia's favor.
Russia sits well positioned in Belarus to respond to a NATO/Polish provocation. You can expect a blood entry. Shoukd NATO respond by entering Belarus, you can expect tactical nukes. If NATO responds in kind we enter a world of shit.
@@adenubipeace2394 "NATO has no desire for conflict with Russia." I think that's generally true at present, but like I speculated, if Russia starts to win big, calculations could shift. Cooler heads might not prevail. Washington might be tempted to think that NATO should secure Western Ukraine, if only to prevent Russia from pushing its army too far west. Right now, the trend is not NATO's friend.
It has to do with military structure. 3 platoons make a company. 3 companies make a batallion. 3 batallions make a regiment. 3 regiments make a division. Sometimes it can be more/less than 3. Brigade = some kind of battlegroup. Strenght = between regiment and division.
Each larger unit is comprised of three smaller units, junior officers command splatoons>companies>battalions>regiments and senior (general) officers command brigades>divisions>corps>armies. Or is it four? Sometimes it's three, sometimes four. The smallest unit that can be self-sufficient was the battalion, commanded by a major, but now it seems to be the brigade, commanded by a brigadier or one-star general.

Old news - heard about the Russian attacks everyday, since February 2022! And will still be hearing about the "Russian counteroffensive in eastern Ukraine" 20 years from today.
Silly Russians, another impossible attempt at a counter-offensive like the one a week ago. They will make some progress, over-extend their supply lines, encounter UAF reserves and be forced back once again.
That's exactly what Russia wants according to Putin's words on "demilitarization": take a chunk of land (DNR and LNR where rebels on Russia's side are all at to help), defend it, in the process maul AFU to the point they faint from lack of reserves and drop everything they armed themselves up with from NATO.
@@pixel273a Demilitarization was the second objective but for what has been paid it must be total occupation and surrender for Ukraine. I suspect this will allow them to build fortifications and not overstretch their forces, where Ukrainians could engage in pincer movements to cut them off. It could also be an attempt to divert more Ukr. forces to the north and weaken them across this very large front.
..while more NATO equipment flows into Ukraine?
If they take petropatvaka in will allow the russians to drive directly south cutting off supplies to the eastern River. Where the russians have already made a bridge head farther south.
They can use it as a two pronged attack to capture some 32k Ukrainian forces off guard which would be disaster for ukraine, as the entire northern front would be exposed.
Kharkiv would be wide open for recapture by the russians.
The russians withdrew last summer to sure up defenses, and it looks like their decision paid off so far.
They have taken more land in 3 days than ukraine has taken in 2 months
Yeah look like Russians learned from their mistakes.

Russia is defeating Ukraine, but at their own pace, for reason. This is currently the 3 rd iteration of the Ukranian Army, that's being decimated in the field of battle. Most crucially, in these slowly but surely processes, the original SMO of demilitarization of Ukraine has expanded clearly into demilitarization of NATO itself ; Thousands of heavy armour, including tanks, APC's & artillery, from a combined 40 allied nations have been destroyed, not to mention numerous types of Air Defense batteries. Hence, there's actually a method to this madness by the Russian High Command. All the while the Russian Armed Forces are growing stronger, larger, more advanced, adapting remarkably & vitally, gaining experience........When the dust settles, Russia will have the most powerful, battle hardened army on the planet and as such, they'll Never go back ; exactly as the Soviets did after years of attritional warfare in 1945.

@@PolishBehemoth Russian winter isn't that offensive, actually 😄
Not a lot of artillery,
Out numbered, badly damaged units with no reserves
No airpower,
Barely any air defense,
And low morale.
While russia has complete air and artillery superiority.
Fresh troops with tones of reserves.
Plus, lots of armor support
(that they haven't even needed to use it)
I believe the Russian goal here is to make it obvious they are not going to be pushed out of Ukraine, and negotiation is the best approach.

The remnants of the Ukraine's army should invade the northeastern region of Poland before them being invaded by Warsaw...
Likely scenario
Poland will wait until little is left of the Ukrainian army. By the end of the year Russia will have 200,000 more fully trained troops.
It all depends on what the US decides to do.
The SMO is only within the Ukrainian territory. NATO has no desire for conflict with Russia.
Typical Ukrainian hopium. Insane.
What is the different between brigade, regiment, legion, batalyon?
