My great great great grandfather fought in the battle of Culloden, and was taken prisoner. He was first sentenced to death , but due to his age(he was only 15 at that time) his sentence was commuted to exile to the colonies. He was shipped to Virginia as an indentured servant to a plantation owner. After a year on the plantation he decided to run away to the Appalachian mountains, settling in what is today southwestern Virginia. That is way the name Lawson is so common in this part of the country.
I think Tennessee has a lot of areas settled the same way. A lot of customs in this area I simply don't understand, me being from northern Ohio, from an area settled by another set of indentured people from Germany and eastern Europe to work the Great Lakes Transport boats. When you think that most Americans have these kinds of family stories, that begin, "When my great great grandparent came here as an indentured servant," or as a slave for life for someone's profit, this tells us that the US was never founded on freedom. Especially not religious freedom. We were founded as a business deal, and we still are.

Theres so much first hand knowledge in the comments and people are generally kind and more than willing to answer questions. I wish this was around when i was lugging books home from th library. When i was on university I lost a small paperback book. They charged me almost 100 and refused to accept a replacement- explaining that they have some super valueable stuff, and by charging an average no one gets stuck paying thousands. I said so I can "lose" a $10,000 manuscript and youll charge me 100? She was 😤 No. It's about time evil libraries were challenged 😂
I read a book a while back on the subject of the Highland Clearances. In the book, the author explains that the land was taken by Scottish landlords (clan chiefs) whose sons had been sent to England to study in the schools and universities. These sons felt more English than Scottish. They lost their connection to their own culture, and it was they who 'realised' that the land would be better used (more valuable) if sheep roamed on it instead of peasants. To make this happen, they had the small landowners evicted and pushed them to the coast where they were basically destitute. Once the people were removed to the coast, they were encouraged to get on the ships bound for the new world. The versions are similar except for the idea that it was Scottish landowners who did the removal and not powerful English people. Patrick Sellar and the Duchess of Sutherland, for example, were both Scottish. She was the head of the Sutherland clan. In your story, you keep saying it was the English who were doing the removal of the people of the Highlands, but it wasn't. I think it makes the story even more sinister to find out that it was Scottish people doing this to their own kin. I also read another thing were it talked about the clan chiefs rather suddenly demanding rent from their clan members where traditionally, the tenants would pay in kind. This was the beginning of the end of duthchas and a more commercial (modern) approach to landownership. So, all in all, I think it safe to say that the Scottish peasants were victims of their own Scottish landlords. Another point, poor people from England, Ireland and Scotland who traveled to the New World were almost always indentured servants when they arrived because they owed the fare of their crossing to those who had organised it. This was not something specific to the people of the Highlands.
I agree Anne. I’ve read a half dozen books about the Clearances, and I disagree strongly with the anti-English slant of this documentary. The ugly truth is the highlanders were betrayed almost exclusively by their own countrymen, whose lust for profits overcame their sense of decency and responsibility as clan or community leaders. And I say this as a descendant in Canada, who had reason to believe the “bastard English” myths and did, until I looked further into it. The English rural working class were dealing with similar problems at the same time, with the “Enclosures”.

This was very interesting indeed, loved it! Obviously, as you can tell from my new "handle" AussieBrit, (formerly Nicola Todd,) I am an Australian who was born in England. The history of the motherland is fascinating to me. Cheers! 😊🦘
We have a Culloden, WV, named by Mr White in honor of the Battle of Culloden... and many other town names, etc that are from Scottish and Irish origin.
I guess that's how my ancestors ended up in Eastern North Carolina. I didn't understand why we were called highlanders when the land was as flat as a pancake.
It mainly wasnt English landlords either. It was former clan chiefs who became landlords and evicted their people who they now saw as useless tenants. Also the clearances were often supported by lowland Scot’s
Remember it was done in East Anglia too. That is why Australians talk slightly like they are from there. EA was cleared and turned from sheep to farming, and Scotland was cleared to make way for the sheep!
The comment about Marx seeing the clearances as an example of "Capitalism run amuck" is silly. In the later chapters of 'Capital' Marx explains "So called Primitive Accumulation", and how the Scottish clearances were part of how early capitalism formed. In order to push them into situations and localities where capitalism needed wage labor to develop its further domination and strength, people had to be forced off of their lands where they did not live under a wage system. This was not a mere example of the evils of capitalism ("capitalism run amuck"), it was the systematic and intentional growth of capitalism. For further understanding I suggest '33 Lessons on Capital: Reading Marx Politically' by Harry Cleaver which begins mentioning the clearances towards the beginning of the book, it's an easy amd enjoyable read.
I was born and raised in New Zealand, and so were my parents, but technically, we're all Campbells. To this day, any time another Scottish person asks me what my clan is, I have to say "I'm a Campbell and I'm sorry.".
Sorry Jiles a I'm totally confused. James I didn't die in The Glorious Revolution, he sired Charles I, who sired Charles II and James II, and died of old age in his bed. I think you might be confusing him for his grandson James II, who ruled for three years after the restoration of the monarchy which saw the accession of his brother Charles II to the throne. Part of the reason England had it's civil war was to do with religion and James's II Catholicism is what got him replaced by William and Mary, his son-in-law and daughter.
You being a redhead, Jiles, I'm betting that you and I share the ancestry. If anything, things were even worse in Ireland. As Scots-Irish myself, I've known about this bleak history for most of my life. Maybe Ireland should be the next "Somewhere Sinister".
Wales and England were joined together in 1284 long before the Act of Union in 1707. James VI was succeeded by his son Charles not William of Orange as implied. Catholic Scots supported Bonnie Prince Charlie. Just as many were on the other side. It was not a battle between England and Scotland but a battle of religious belief.
The suggestion that "at times parts of Ireland" became part of the United Kingdom after the 1707 Union with Scotland is also misleading. Since 1494, the English Parliament asserted supremacy over Ireland and, since 1542, the King of England was automatically the King of Ireland, although Ireland was technically a separate kingdom with its own parliament. Actual English control over Irish territory varied over the years. The 1798 Irish Rebellion led to the 1801 Act of Union between Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland and the Irish Parliament was abolished. From 1801 to 1922, the entirety of the island of Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. In 1922, as a result of the treaty ending the Irish War of Independence, Ireland was partitioned into a predominately Catholic and independent Free State (later Republic) in the south, with six (then predominately Protestant) counties in the north remaining part of the United Kingdom.
I take umbrage with your clan map, sir! We Morrisons have been living in the Hebrides for very much a long time, just like those of lesser clans, like the MacLeods... 😉
In my humble opinion, those whom are wealthy are usually the ones who go after lands they are determined to own. Greed and power hungry are the root of all evil inflected upon innocent peoples.
T, Eliza here this is a scoop into a conversation into what nature used with native wildlife. It was so early, and the creatures were used to make political decisions in their slaughter of land, to watch native species grow into extinction. These creatures and animals could have been saved, yet because of human vendetta, were brought to near extinction. It’s a histrionic death for both humans and animals. How damn inhumane, at a time when we desperately needed the diversity of species… it’s most certainly a horrific event… please listen and make comments. A tragic event…
Hate to be THAT person but there is a big error in the early narration of British history in this podcast, England annexed Wales in 1284 and enacted an act of union between those 2 countries in 1536, well before the act of union with Scotland. As a native born Welshman, believe me, the English have been effing us even longer than they have the Scottish!
England and Scotland weren’t original parts of the union. Wales was incorporated into England way earlier. Also the highland clearances begun way earlier than the act of union
The English then did something similar in New Zealand until our tribes united against them, but we still feel the effects today. I’m also part Scottish so it’s interesting to see how similar our cultures are.❤

And we have no idea what happened to his first wife. Yet. Let me know if you’re interested. Thx.
I think a fee years ago, England gave Scotland the opportunity to be their own country. The Scots voted to stay with England. So, The Scots don't want independence. So Sorry for William Wallace
52% want to leave. This took fifteen seconds to look up. I don't know if you are British and maybe want to make a pro-British statement, or maybe not. Most Scotts want to be free of England.
I live in Oregon. Scotland and Oregon and Scotland have a similar size and population Some of my family left early after Flodden Fields, not by choice but the other part of the family left during the clearances. They left to both the US and Canada. But if my family hadn’t have come John Muir would never had had a chance to hike through Yellowstone or the Giant Redwoods and help create the federal parks service
If you read more educated comments, you will learn that it was wealthy Scottish clans that did a lot of the land clearing,. This information is also in official history records, if interested? But it's popular to always blame only the English. Real resentment should be held against Westminster. Power and wealth is not found in the average citizen, it's always found in a select few, making rules for everyone. No matter where you are, the dynamics are the same.
Yeah bringing countries into civilisation and prosperity from primitive tribal warfare is so cruel!! And the brutal things they did to each other for thousands of years for fun and ego is true enlightened culture at its peak.
Dang this is really messed up. It's sad to see people screw over others and try killing what was there before. Some of what happened reminds me of something that happened in the states. People are alike all over and that's not necessarily a good thing.
Thr whole country was screwed over with the enclosure act. At least Scotland has the right to roam in England we have zero rights and lost all our common land. Camping is illegal unless on land with express permission of the owner. Which they charge for.
This episode illustrates why my family history and my genetic history don't match. Displaced families took the names of other families to change their history or avoid further persecution. Others "chose" to come to this country to "work" for logging and mining companies as a way to start over. That makes us all inbred liars as a result and too proud to admit it.
The Union did pretty much the same thing to the Confederate states during and after the Civil War. I guess humanity as an adjective in common parlance is diametrically opposed to its true meaning, which is to treat each other in the worst way possible.

Thank you for this. AM looking forward to rest of the series. (But a wee correction for you, from a proud Scot - it is pronounced like 'Jack-obite' and 'Gallic' - the Gaelic with a long 'a' ' sound 'Gaylick' is the Irish language.)
This is a topic close to my heart. I grew up with a father steeped in his Scottish heritage. Thank you for covering this sad time in Scotland's history with such sensitivity.
Jiles! Yr a killer storyteller. I’ve recently been watching more and more of this channel and wow your love of history is very apparent. Thanks especially for this one about the Clearances. That season about the Pacific Northwest is badas@ too! All of it!
Really good story and history lesson. Never knew this. Ty Giles! Look forward to more. 😊
I don't believe I have any Scottish in me, but I have always been interested Scotland. It definitely has a tumultuous history!
I'm Loving the Sinister Series, Jiles. You are so consistent in creating excellent, educational and often frightening content . To think, this all grew from the original "Monsters" series is mind blowing. Thanks ever so much for all you do! Kudos on 100+K subs on Sinister! I am grateful the algorithm brought me to you so early, affording me the opportunity to watch your growth and follow you throughout your future!
Thank you for sharing this !
I learn so much from your channels, Jiles. Thank you.
Thank you for the theme music. I find Sinister videos to informative about history i did not know.
Awesome topic and video - thanks! Clan Rose of Kilravock representing from the US.
I lovee your intro Jiles. Thank you.,..... again.❤😊
Woohoo! 3am (EST) Wednesday. Right on time .
So THAT'S why it's offensive to call a "Scotsman" a "Brit!"
🧐🤔🤯
Thank you, Jiles! ❤
And yet a majority of Scots voted to remain part of the UK 🤔 hmmm funny that
Scotland is part of the island of great Britain which has nothing to do with the United Kingdom 🤯🤯🤯🙉😱😵
You always do fantastic work, Jiles.
Thank you so much!
I have a print of Charles 11, Prince of Wales.
From Canada 🇨🇦 ❤❤❤❤
Marvellous Story and storytelling, thank you so much.♥️ This kind of history is usually never made as clear and revealing as treated here, since it's always external Powers of one kind or another who take over at the expense of the original inhabitants who have worked the soil.
This was very interesting indeed, loved it! Obviously, as you can tell from my new "handle" AussieBrit, (formerly Nicola Todd,) I am an Australian who was born in England. The history of the motherland is fascinating to me. Cheers! 😊🦘
That was excellent.
Thank you
I KNEW this history from watching OUTLANDER!!!! WOO HOO!!! I love that show! It ACTUALLY TAUGHT ME HISTORY!! 🤣🤣❤️
This period was immortalised by Robert Louis Stevenson in his fantastic book "Kidnapped" and the films from it.
We have a Culloden, WV, named by Mr White in honor of the Battle of Culloden... and many other town names, etc that are from Scottish and Irish origin.
I think Jiles might be Scottish. I am half. Thanks for the lessons. Appreciate much
Just wanted to say I absolutely adore Highland cattle 🥰
I guess that's how my ancestors ended up in Eastern North Carolina. I didn't understand why we were called highlanders when the land was as flat as a pancake.
❤ love all your videos
kinda weird to hear u talking abt history but I enjoyed it
It mainly wasnt English landlords either. It was former clan chiefs who became landlords and evicted their people who they now saw as useless tenants. Also the clearances were often supported by lowland Scot’s
There were a good number of people who came over from Scotland to learn Gaelic in the past century in Nova Scotia after it was outlawed in Scotland
Finally starting to get what was goin on in outlander kinda
Very informative
I was born and raised in New Zealand, and so were my parents, but technically, we're all Campbells. To this day, any time another Scottish person asks me what my clan is, I have to say "I'm a Campbell and I'm sorry.".
✨🎃✨🕯️✨🍭✨👀
Happy All Hallows JILES! ✌️🏆
Trimming down, ? So many words I wish to speak. Every one on this Planet Bleeds Red. Jus touched a nerve.
In my humble opinion, those whom are wealthy are usually the ones who go after lands they are determined to own. Greed and power hungry are the root of all evil inflected upon innocent peoples.
happy halloween
Mel gibson and tv show highlander brought me here.😁😄😅
Oh good god.
Try looking for factual and unbiased information.😊
The thumbnail looked like it was for a sinister sheep themed horror comedy
I'm Scotch Irish. That's probably why my family came to America. In those days the Brits were traveling the world taking whatever they could.
7:49 Tale as old as time. The clan system wasn't economically or agriculturally feasible to make the crown money so will abolish it. Bullocks!
The more things change, the more they stay the same, eh?
The English then did something similar in New Zealand until our tribes united against them, but we still feel the effects today.
I’m also part Scottish so it’s interesting to see how similar our cultures are.❤
Freeeeeeeedooooooooom 🏴🏴🏴
Great videos man. Subbed to both channels and looking forward to the new ones. I don’t know if you’d be interested but we have a pretty interesting story unfolding with my family. Still working on details but my blood grandfather is not what we thought. False names. 3 marriages. No divorces. My dad is 68 and just found out he has a half sister. And we have no idea what happened to his first wife. Yet. Let me know if you’re interested. Thx.
Ah James VI, the guy that literally wrote the book on witches 😳
Jack ‘O’ Bite
👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻🏴
Gratitude for being an American and for life! Whoop whoop
Yesssssss
Thanks Sinister. Nice change of pace.
♥️🇨🇦✨️ Luv your Chanel
terrible how many countries england invaded and took over😢😢😢
We gave the Romans a run for their money
Why is it "terrible"?
You're welcome 😊 enjoy. On us 🍻
If you read more educated comments, you will learn that it was wealthy Scottish clans that did a lot of the land clearing,. This information is also in official history records, if interested? But it's popular to always blame only the English.
Real resentment should be held against Westminster.
Power and wealth is not found in the average citizen, it's always found in a select few, making rules for everyone.
No matter where you are, the dynamics are the same.
Alba gu brath! 🏴 Saor Alba! 🏴
I think about these sorts of cruel colonizer acts when people fawn over British royalty.
Yeah bringing countries into civilisation and prosperity from primitive tribal warfare is so cruel!! And the brutal things they did to each other for thousands of years for fun and ego is true enlightened culture at its peak.
Jackobite is the correct pronunciation 😊
Dang this is really messed up. It's sad to see people screw over others and try killing what was there before.
Some of what happened reminds me of something that happened in the states. People are alike all over and that's not necessarily a good thing.
It’s in need of proof of social animal destruction. How horrific. I agreed. Thank you for sharing your view! ❤
Thr whole country was screwed over with the enclosure act. At least Scotland has the right to roam in England we have zero rights and lost all our common land. Camping is illegal unless on land with express permission of the owner. Which they charge for.
Why this?
"One of the most damaging events the UK has ever produced"...........I think it's just a track on their greatest hits album.
This episode illustrates why my family history and my genetic history don't match. Displaced families took the names of other families to change their history or avoid further persecution. Others "chose" to come to this country to "work" for logging and mining companies as a way to start over.
That makes us all inbred liars as a result and too proud to admit it.
Was a typical medieval measure made by Richest expelling their nations mate. Not much difference from today
The Union did pretty much the same thing to the Confederate states during and after the Civil War. I guess humanity as an adjective in common parlance is diametrically opposed to its true meaning, which is to treat each other in the worst way possible.
