Preparing for SAMHAIN | DIY witch broom | scary treasure hunt | witch's new year

  • In this witchy vlog, I am showing you another day in the life of a witch - and specifically how I prepare for Samhain. Samhain is the third harvest festival on the pagan wheel of the year and it is also titled the Witches' new year. Most people celebrate it on the 31st of October, together with Halloween - but historic finds suggest that Samhain, as a lunar festival, is actually celebrated during the 11th new moon after the winter solstice. In this vlog I show you how I decorate for Samhain and maybe that can give you some ideas for your Samhain altar decoration- Being a green witch, I try to stay away from plastic decoration or anything that screams Halloween too much but I love to decorate with natural and sustainable options: colorful leaves, pumpkins, berries and nuts found on my autumn walks in the forest. As Samhain is a day to honor our ancestors, I will be doing an (admittedly) scary treasure hunt in the old, abandoned stables on our property, where my ancestors have stored their belongings throughout centuries. Let´s see what I can find and give new use and live! After that, we are taking a little break and enjoying a beautiful fall day - admiring the golden autumn sun and the brightly colored autumn leaves. During the walk, we will collect some birch twigs from which I will make a besom (witch's broom) later in the evening. As Samhain also marks the end of the Celtic pagan year and the beginning of a new cycle of the wheel of the year, it is an ideal time to get rid of old, stale, and negative energy - and a besom is a perfect tool to cleanse and purify your witchy cottage or ritual space. I will also share one of my favorite fall recipes with you: Coconut, Ginger, and pumpkin soup with freshly baked pumpkin dinner rolls. And then I will give you some fun facts about besoms and a DIY witch's broom tutorial. Throughout the vlog, I will give you some more information on what Samhain is, provide ideas on how to celebrate Samhain, and take you along through a wonderfully relaxing day.

Your submissive pumpkin buns made me laugh! The besom came out beautifully and looks like it does a very good job sweeping. I love the lore you shared in this video (and your live cooking about tomatoes, etc.)! ❤

Such good recipes that you do, I used to be a private chef, but lost the desire to dream up new recipes and ideas due to the humdrum lifestyle of producing the same thing and cooking for a family on a budget (so boring) but you are really inspiring me to go back to the kitchen and enjoy making food again. Xx

I didn't know that! 😄 How cool - I used to cook for two families, too during my studies in the Netherlands but it was soooo boring to always stick to the same plain dishes every week 😅 but yes, cooking for the fun of it and experimenting in the kicthen can be so fun and fulfilling! So happy you find it inspiring ♥️

The link references with the pumpkin buns was killing me. 🤣🤣🤣 Also, the cross in the background of the besom making was hilarious. I know you live in a place that your family has for generations. Just a little funny juxtaposition.

When my husband and I were digging holes to put posts in for doing the florida weave for my tomatoes (hurricane zone) we found a gold ring. So that will be on my land's ancestral shrine. I want to repair it as I think the tool broke the ring. But i often look at it and wonder about who had it, what they were like and if they were upset that it was lost. Its been found now.

Here for some non-halloween based inspiration as I'm a southern hemisphere (Aussie) witch so Samhain is actually in April for us. It's very close to my birthday so I'm designing a story of personal new year ritual thing but wanted more bits and pieces to celebrate the season, without going all out Halloween-y because that's not even really a thing down here even in October (except for the kids eating too many lollies ofc).
I have struck GOLD here so thank you for all the ideas

I loved your video!! So so nice that you took us with you on your samhain preparations. Your crafting in the beginning is really inspiring, I might steal some of it ;) I'm also definitely trying the pumpkin bread this year (last year I made the american version but it wasn't fully my thing) pretty sure your recipe will find its way in my next grimoire spread. (I also didn't expect that you could hide bdsm references in a cooking video xD). I remember going through our stables and finding all kinds of amazing things and hording them in my room, we have this huge bucket to make butter as well, we placed it in the living room and decorated it with pumpkins on top! 🍁

    • @Thewitchescookery
      @Thewitchescookery  4 роки тому +3

oh i am glaaaaad :D I am sure, if you borrow some ideas from the crafting part you will turn it into an artsy masterpiece! I also don´t like the American pumpkin bread much (I also am not big on pumpkin pie) but just the regular bread with it tasts super good and lovely soft on the inside - let me know how you liked it :) The references might have been inspired by one of my many colorful student jobs back in the days xD And yeeees, old stables can be such a treassure trove! Most of my dishes and kitchen supplies are from the stables and barns too.

Hi Becks.Another great video.Altho I am opposed to hunting a friend of mine left me two huge antlers when he died...yes he had a very dark sense of humour!I at the moment after much cleansing have them at the base of my alter feels like grounding male energy.I used to have them standing up entwined w crystals and symbols hanging.I dont think they have settled and mulling over where they go next.Over a door perhaps.I definitley need to replace my old broom!I used to have a beautiful old fashioned one literally with bells and whistles etc.But I never see them in hardware shops anymore.Maybe I shall make my own you have once again inspired me becks.Thank you sisterwitch x

You are just pure joy, and I am so grateful our paths have crossed. I wanted to make a besom from the coconut broom that belonged to my mama that's in our pantry. Haven't had time yet, but hope to soon! Back in the islands we very much honour and respect the coconut tree in all aspects of life and spiritual workings because it provides shelter, nourishment and practical tools like bowls and brooms! As for the beginning part of the video (I'm 1/2 way through and didn't want to forget so commenting as I go, as I do :D) what you do for your community! Girlllll! Spiders. Me. NO :D.... But I'm glad you braved it because what amazing finds! And really well filmed, I was actually properly creeped out LOL. Going a little further back still... YOU ARE SO FREAKIN ADORABLE! I love the little dance!! You have that Cameron Diaz in Holiday charm! One of my favorite movies to cozy up to in the winter, but me being me, you know I watch Fall and Winter movies... all the time! :D... okay back to the broom making -- oh wait, also.... how much do we all love your little witchling!! :D and the pup too! I'll get you, and your little dog too, takes on a whole new meaning when the witch is a saucy fun minx like you and you are most likely playing tag with your little one and the dog too.. heehee.. yes I ramble :D ---- okay at the bread making part... seriously, the way you do is so much fun! I want that cook book of yours to speak the same way! Assemble your toys, cozy milk bath for the yeast!! You make it intimate and fun and alive, not institutional and tutorially... yes I made that up :). - oh my Goddess, lol... she likes sweet stuff... I think I am actually a form of yeast. I like sweet stuff, and my belly is constantly rising :P --- [ fork it... it's very wet ...... yeah, I'm not so PG13 lmao, I took that to a whole different place ;P ] LMAO you were totallying going there, I love it! I was wondering why you were tying them up, brilliant!!! -- lol, make someone else chop the onions -- seriously, when I am having a day, I just replay your videos, you are a gift my friend! -- Love the workshop! Have to ask about the Rum Maple tins! combines rum and what I assume is maple syrup? Both my land of blood and land of spirit girl! I'll laugh if it's actually a wood stain or something like that. Love the broom! The coconut husk brooms we use actually don't have handles, I'll try to take a photo to show you on IG this week. What I hope to do is deconstruct it and make mini brooms for my different altars. Because I do believe energy fills voids and it's best to therefore program that energy in, my intention for the broom will hold different energy on either side, one for sweeping out, and the back end for sweeping in! Okay, chapter one done :P see you soon!

One day I am gonna print out all your comments and bind them into a book for when I am having a bad day 😂 you are always so sweet for leaving all your feedback and lovely, kind words ♥️ how cool that you still have the broom! And yeees, you should definitely do something with it and use it in your craft - it would be such a shame only to have it sit there unused. Obviously the coconut tree and any lore around it is absolutely foreign to me but I would love to hear more about it (maybe it is time for another video? 😋)The rum maple tins are actually pipe tobacco haha my granddad (and veeeery seldom, my dad) used to smoke pipe and now the old tins hold screws and other bits and pieces in the workshop 😄 they smell lovely and sweet though! Sending you much love and kisses and talk to you later 😘

I love it! My family and I live in Devon England in a home that has belonged to our family for over 600 years. I love to go through everything that has been left behind by the Lords, Ladies and people that lived and worked there before us. The paintings are probably one of my favourite things. About five years ago my mum found a 500-year-old book of hours that belonged to one of the ladies that lived here. I wanted to make a UA-cam channel for years to show people our piece of history….however, my parents along with the trust feel that it would open us up to theft. So unfortunately they have refused. We’ve had a lot of historians and different types of people even archaeologists come and visit our home which is always lovely because it’s what inspired my own career. One day I hope to be able to show some of our history just like you have. I think it’s beautiful and brilliant all the way around. Home is just beautiful, and I love that you’re able to hold onto that history that really belongs to you. Thank you for sharing🎃🧹💜✨🌙🍁

i am envious of you living in your grandparents generational home. Our family had the original Spanish Land grants here in Colorado & the property had been in the family for a very long time. I found out my aunt sold the property to outsiders. I wish I had known she was going to do this because I would have bought the land to keep in the family. My cousin bought the other property our family owned and will pass it down to my cousins so it stays in the family.

Amazing I’m going to make a besom it’s been a few years I have the NJ. Pine barrens in my backyard literally. There’s actually some really cool lore about the New Jersey Pine 🌲 barons or the Pinelands’s. The folklore is the Jersey devil. The story goes in the 1700s during the time of napoleon Bonaparte and actually his brother had an experience with the Jersey devil his brother had a residence in south jersey. I know weird right anyway mother Leeds was giving birth to her 13th child and had had enough and so she cursed the baby and said I hope this child is a demon spawn from the devil himself. And so it was the baby was born during a huge thunderstorm at the end of Leeds point named after the Leeds family and the point is right on the bay connecting to the Atlantic Ocean and I actually only live about 30 minutes from Leeds point anyway the baby was normal at first but over the course of hours the nursemaid noticed the baby changing into something hideous the baby grew a horse face bat wings hooked feet and finally it flew out the window. Some people say it killed the nursemaid but there’s many variations to the story and sightings of this jersey devil have happened numerous times up to the 1960s some claim they have seen it recently and strangely enough most of the sightings were seen by credible people normal folks and there’s books about it as well as the internet is full of information. South NJ is entirely different from north jersey like night and day north jersey is super crowded and typical of people living near New York City and southern jersey is very beautiful pristine with the Atlantic Ocean pine barrens and cedar water that you can swim in Yes we have Atlantic City not the best but it’s contained and the rest is beautiful I’ve lived here my whole life with my backyard woods raised my children and never saw any jersey devil probably because I don’t believe in it but reading about makes you pause for thought. I’m going for a walk to make a besom and making pumpkin bread Thanks

"Practice some shibari on those buns" *spews out coffee laughing* I definetly want to make a savory pumpkin bread. The cake is yummy but everything pumpin here is a sweet treat

@@Thewitchescookery are you editing with I movie or Final Cut Pro or other? Editing B roll is a chore but I live for it. It’s the majority of what I create but it is so time consuming! Worth it! Yours came out so good and the creppy part was so fun! You really made me feel scared! Also, just looked up at the moon! Full moon Halloween! Hold onto your broomstick! Ha ha

I do use Adobe premier Pro - it is a bit pricey but it makes editing soooo much easier and you the options are endless once you know how to work it ☺️ I always take so much longer editing my ramblings as I have to edit out all the wrong words or times when I just sit there thinking of how to say it in English 😂 and yeees, full moon and it is a blue one too! 🎃

Bex!!! I think this video is my favorite! I love love love so much the tradition about the besom in your area and I am sad for those city worker who now have to work with plastic besoms... Shame! I laughed so hard during the submissive pumpkin bread part. My husband was near me and told me that I was watching weird videos! 🤣🤣
Always a pleasure to watch your videos! :) Talk to you soon!

omgggg ahahahaa the bondage jokes!! i have to show my husband, i make so much fun of him because germans are known for having the kinkiest bedroom culture 😂 (he hasn't embraced that part of his heritage yet so he'll probably give me a side-eye and blush) 😂😂

Hey 👋😊 you can definitely use both maple and oak - they might be a bit softer then a birch broom but work just as well! Would love to see how it turns out 💚 many hugs from me and little man. Have a beautiful day and a blessed Samhain as well!
