When I play with the Lydian mode, I have a hard time keeping myself from playing Ionian in this case I find myself playing around with the G major scale. I need to really focus on the C. But my ear gets drawn to the G. I guess I need to work on that :-)
I too experienced this difficulty when I started. You should visualize the scale as the C scale with an augmented fourth: C - D - E - F# - G - A - B. Focus on the note C and frequently transition to F#; you'll notice the distinct sound. Good studies
is for you to visualize the augmented fourth in the scale shapes. For example, play the shape of C natural C, D, E, F, G, A, B, then C, D, E, F#, G, A, B, and notice the difference in the sound of C natural and C Lydian.
