    If I remember well, the Mega Drive port was one of the very first games to use the GEMS sound driver.
    The SNES port is also the first game on the system David Whittaker did music for.
    He had to create a custom sound drive in order to get the job done.

    Woah that is a lot of ports, had your work cut out for you. Reskinned games have a lot of history, usually lazy license jobs though heh.
    Yeah I've kind of noticed that more in retrospect with the low frame rate, lack of V-sync, and screen tearing in DOS games. I imagine it stems from software rendering limitations.
    Can't go wrong with the SNES port, seems to be a clear winner. I'm pretty sure they just took the Amiga version and tweaked it as little as possible to work on the Genesis.😒I'm not sure what year but when multiplatform games started coming more and more the GEN/MD was always getting the shaft.
    Always nice to hear of something good to get for the SMS, oh looks like a game cheaper outside of NA. Definitely much better speech samples on SMS, kudos to that excellent programming.😁
    Well Simpsons games didn't fair well on NES, tended to steer clear of them bitd. It is a bit loud in color choices, but at least it has a vibrancy to it instead of being Sepia like. That is so weird the GB one is slightly better but I guess less screen real estate to move around.

    Ignoring the fact it’s a reskinned game fit for The Simpsons, it’s kinda surprising how the gameplay resembles Lemmings a bit, considering they both released the same year, 1991, at least the Rat Trap original. If it was later that year, it would make more sense, but it makes you wonder if the concept of this game was more original than what it seemed by their release date, like how people often say Phantasy Star is SEGA’s answer to Final Fantasy, despite the two being only 2 days apart at release.

  • @apollosungod2819
    @apollosungod2819 Місяць тому

    This game looks graphically similar on the NES to SMS to Super Nintendo... and the Amiga original... that right there tells you this is a really BASIC type of graphics game that doesn't really do any significant 2d pixel sprite pushing or 2d effects... the number of rats is almost the same and we can even analyze the NES and SMS versions of Lemmings too... the only thing that might be significant tech this game does is hitting 60fps on Super Nintendo but ONLY because the programmer coded it and MAYBE some chip tunes that might seem better in stereo because the Super Nintendo can do stereo... meanwhile the Sega MegaDrive hardware (especially with the proper hardware version early on) can do some amazing stereo that may be muffled on later Genesis hardware versions. and Thats about it...
    It's a game that has an interesting premise but never really gets pushed especially when the 2d hardware are performance monsters like Super Nintendo and Sega MegaDrive.
    It sucks that most of the Simpson 8bit and 16bit games suffered from these horrible game design, lackluster game design and bad programming with horrible gameplay mechanics.
    It's amazing also how back then only Konami actually created an amazing Simpsons's based game because they made a four player arcade beat em up that was somehow not allowed to be ported probably because LJN/Acclaim held the exclusive console license just like they did for WWF wrestling license,
    I no longer watch the simpsons for over many many years now but I did play a few of the NES and Super Nintendo Simpson games as rentals and purchased one of them that really sucked cause I paid full price and the game was horrible gameplay which means cheap deaths and unfair enemy placement.

    The Mega Drive version derives from the Amiga version, the original Amiga game wasn't based on the Simpsons series. The SNES version has redrawn sprites, Krusty actually has a weird walking animation in this version and they even cropped his hair at the top.
    The MD version doesn't sound as abrasive as in this video, the original console features a low-pass filter which sounds more pleasant than this.
    If put side by side, in order to port the original assets to the SNES with its smaller horizontal resolution, it's a bit cropped to the left and some colors/tiles are different. The Master System version plays and looks OK, but sounds bad (the soundtrack is sped up and can pierce through our ears easily) and the NES version is laughable, could have been so much better, looks like a Tiertex release.
    MD>SNES>SMS>DOS>Amiga, the latter being low only due to its weird controls, this game requires a LOT of diagonal pushing to solve many puzzles, specially later in the game which requires very precise timing and inputs.
    Some games ported to the SNES from the MD or the Amiga end up being a bit wonky in some aspects, and every time I finished Krusty's Fun House, the SNES version felt weird to play, there's something off, not a bad version, but not the best either.
    Top Gear 2 on the SNES is a nice example where I find this version superior to either the Amiga or MD in basically all aspects.

      If that were the case, you'd think it's a pretty good game.
      You really have to judge these things in context. You have gameboy games and NeoGeo games equally accessible, for free, on your choice of device. We could only dream of ever touching a NeoGeo, and were thankful we got a Gameboy over a Tiger Electronics.

      It seems that the devs of both games had enough of the NES taking all the limelight. The Master System was a pretty strong system for its time. It could have easily out preformed the NES had it had the same 3rd party support. Also. They could have bossted the Master System's power with extra processor chips in the carts just like NES games had.

    I do not know why that some games on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive are worse then SNES versions. It's like developers were not the same and didn't care if one version was better on another console. Or maybe so times it was developers just wanted one console to seem better then the other. If developers did want one console to look better then the other I wouldn't be surprised if the manufacturer paid to get a better port of the games.

    • @solarflare9078
      @solarflare9078 Місяць тому +1

      Same could be said otherwise. Captain America and the Avengers was INEXCUSABLY bad compared to the Mega Drive port for example
      The answer comes to developer incompetence a good amount of the time… or just not caring about how a port comes out.

    • @gargonovich
      @gargonovich Місяць тому

      Time and money, mostly. It took less time to get two different studios to do ports, especially because the SNES and Genesis weren't compatible in many ways, so if you had one team do it it would take a lot longer because they'd have to build a lot of the game twice. Because publishers would be paying multiple teams, they generally didn't shell out for top-tier talent, so your results tended to vary a lot.
      The other reason is that there are simply things that one machine is better at than the other. For instance, the SNES handles colour much better than the Genesis, the Genesis has a more flexible memory layout that makes beat 'em ups work better on that machine.
      I seriously doubt that Nintendo shelled out money to keep Krusty's Super Funhouse, of all things, from being better on Genesis. Especially when games that would actually move systems, like Mortal Kombat 1/2/3, weren't interfered with on the Genesis.

    • @KenSch2020
      @KenSch2020 Місяць тому

      @gargonovich I know that game wasn't a big money maker but I have seen some games that it seems was made to show off the systems strengths and Nintendo or Sega paid to one up each other.

    • @gargonovich
      @gargonovich Місяць тому

      @KenSch2020 Again, that's just different teams working on the project. If you have a team that's fairly experienced doing the Genesis port and somebody pretty new or less skilled doing the SNES version, that experienced team is going to know and leverage the Genesis hardware's advantages, while the SNES team might struggle just to get the game working at all. And sometimes it's just developers trying to one-up each other and show off. Cool Spot is a good example of that. The game was made by one developer split into teams by platform. The SNES guys saw the Genesis version running and decided to one up them by making the balloons in the first level transparent and use more colours. It can be just that simple. Doing a good job gets you more work, so as in any job, some folks are going to swing for the fences.
      Publishers are in the business of making money by selling product. They wouldn't take money to intentionally tank a version on the SNES or Genesis, because that would damage their reputation with customers and their relationship with the other console manufacturer. The much better move for both a publisher and the console manufacturer is to work out an exclusivity deal, like Nintendo did with Capcom for the original version of Street Fighter 2.
