personally i dont like dj grooves, i like the conductor way better but i do agree, the conductor makes more sense for a fight. knives on dj grooves? saws on dj grooves? the bomb from train rush? and the conductor makes more sense, it just looks right. some attacks fit dj grooves more better though, like the disco ball or whatever it is, but the conductor makes more sense for a boss fight.
This actually made more sense. I ended up fighting DJ Grooves because I wanted him to win the award. The Conductor boarded up the door to the penguins' studio, is foul-mouthed (no pun intended), and almost blew up a train full of his own owls. Grooves' parade was kind of dangerous, but his endorsement game was fun and cute, he cleared your debts from Chapter 1, and he treated Hat Kid more like a friend. Neither may be perfect but Grooves was more of a hero and Conductor was more of a villain.
I find it funny the Conductor is trying to erase 1 loss vs DJ Grooves who is in a 52 loss streak or something of that nature + during the train murder if you acuse your Uncles sister I think it was, it turns out it was Grooves trying to help the Conductor with his movie plot. Grooves seems a lot more respectful to the player while the Conductor pretty much steals all the credit. At least to me for Grooves it seems malice born of desperation. For the Conductor it just feels almost petty. It doesn't really excuse trying to murder you though.

I always let DJ Grooves win because in my mind it makes more sense for him to be evil. Plus, I've liked Conductor more ever since Hat/Bow Kid sees him and his grandchildren on the cruise ship.
I think I've said this before elsewhere but: - Conductor makes more sense as the villain of this chapter, - HOWEVER, DJ Grooves makes much more sense in terms of boss fight design. I mean, losing one award breaking a 42-year long streak definitely feels like something you'd time travel to fix, it's kind of like when you play a rhythm game only to get a single "good" note which breaks the combo... so it would make sense why the Conductor would be the bad guy here. Not to mention that he has extremely questionable work ethics (doesn't care about his fellow owls, only cares about his train lol) and would sabotage the penguins in order to win, so the idea that "he cheated" wouldn't be too far out of the question. After all, who's to say that all of his other wins were cheated as well? But in the end this boss fight doesn't seem to fit him that well--it's too glamorous and colorful, even with the difference in stage design, it just doesn't seem to fit with him since most of the significant props used in this fight relate more to Grooves than the Conductor. The disco balls, the cars, the parade at the end, photographs, even the falling lights to an extent (though that can apply to both since it's just a generic movie prop, but I always associated Grooves with the "spotlight" than I did the Conductor); meanwhile, the Conductor has the knives, saw blades, the bomb--that's about it. They're definitely not as flashy or prominent in this fight compared to the Grooves-related props. With how flashy this boss fight is it seems more fitting to be a Grooves fight than a Conductor fight, since the latter I usually associate more with kind of working behind the scenes? Like I mentioned before he never seemed like a "likes to be in the spotlight" kind of bird, unlike DJ Grooves who absolutely does with how dramatic and showy he is. The two have very different styles so I understand that it'd be hard to find a perfect balance that fits both of them at the same time, but yeah, that's my opinion on the matter.
I like DJ Grooves more as as the boss. It feels like the rage he held at all his past losses has finally been unleashed now that the chance to erase them and take back The Conductor's stolen victories. It's genuinely so important to him he'd be willing to kill the child who got him his long overdue victory to make sure his revision of history sticks. And even if she doesn't stand in his way, she's a loose end. He sounds like he's at his wit's end in Phase 3, like he's truly desperate to take back what's rightfully his. Even his laughter almost turns into sobbing and his voice cracks when he says "CHEEEECK THIIIIIS OOOOOUT!" The Conductor killing Hat Kid so DJ Grooves doesn't make fun of him for cheating, not expose him for the fraud and sore loser he is, just LAUGHING AT HIM. . . is just too comically petty for my tastes. Also the Express Owls being in Phase 3 the way it was executed makes a lot more sense for DJ Grooves.
But I never really thought of it like that. Alot of people says that the conductor is a jerk so it makes more sense for him to start a fight but after what you said It makes sense that dj grooves will start the fight too. It's really sad that dj grooves almost never wins.
What I love about The Conductor fight over DJ Grooves is when he says "time's tickin", he flails around like a mad man until you hit him, lol! DJ Grooves just skates around, doesn't look like he's as intentionally trying to waste your time to make you explode.
It's not so much that DJ Grooves is the more popular choice, it's that the game is more biased towards him. The max possible points in "Murder on the Owl Express" is 720. DJ Grooves "Picture Perfect" however, is over 1,100 points. It is the other two that really make or break it, but it is difficult to get a higher score on Train Rush than The Big Parade without the Time Stop hat due to part of the score being how much time is left on Train Rush. I wanted the Conductor to win, but had no reasonable way to do so at that point in the game without intentionally sabotaging DJ Grooves' movies.
tbh I actually got the Conductor's fight unintentionally because I was REALLY terrible at the Big Parade that after I died so many times, I just decided to forget grabbing his face tokens and I only got like 17 points out of it rip.
Tbh this is the reason I don't trust game characters with powerful things I'm collecting. The game devs HAVE to go only one way since they don't have time to add the repercussions.
The boss fought at this point of the game is the winner of the awards ceremony, which is essentially picked by you (It's determined by your scores in each act of the chapter, higher score wins). From what I can tell, DJ Grooves has been the more popular pick and might actually be the intended boss for the stage with The Conductor being pasted into the encounter almost like an afterthought. Within the game's files, there is a "DJGrooves_Boss.umap" file, but no obvious "Conductor" variant, which makes me think they used the same map and reskinned it if The Conductor is the winner. There must be some stage geometry changes as well, but no change to the attack patterns- you'll notice the third strength of the Disco Ball attack (2:20) clips the upper part of the stage before it can hit the ground with some regularity in the Conductor variant, but I haven't seen it happen with DJ Grooves.
