Thanks man. I have been thinking about re stringing mine and that did help a lot. I bought one in Cancun 15 ish yrs ago. The Andean musician playing there restrung it for me during his break after he broke a string. He did it in 10 mins. It took me an hour or more the only time I restrung it.

It does take awhile to change the strings. I would say an hour sounds about right. Just take your time and listen to some music or something entertaining, and it will be done before you know it.

Make sure you use a stringer winder. Also lubricate the nut w/ enough pencil graphite (also the holes in the bridge) so that it works better

A daddario pro winder cutter should help

Yahbut... I've had ten charangos and none of them had a bridge like that with the strings knotted inside the instrument. All of mine had -- or have -- bridges more like a classical guitar, which the strings attached just like on a classical guitar.
Glad you got your instrument restrung, but I'm not sure how many other people have one like it. :)

The end of mine are tied to a little piece of wood. Like how steel strings have a small brass bead on the end

Mine is knotted like a classical guitar. But this was still cool to watch!

helpful vid, but my 1 and 2nd strings keep snapping on me, any advise?

    • @John-bg3mm

Are they snapping while you are tuning, or do they snap after tuned while playing?
Make sure you give the strings time to stretch as you tighten. Never tighten strings fast; always take it slow, especially on the thinner, higher strings. You may get whipped by a string if you are not careful.
Tuning a charango is a bit tricky if you don't have an excellent ear (especially the middle eE strings). I once mistakenly tried to tune a high E string to an octave higher than the actual note, and I ended up breaking the string. Make sure you aren't mistaking the octave of E when you tune.
Let me know if you figure out what went wrong.

i was tightening too fast. had to slow it down.

Mi querido amigo, creo que lo haces mal, el orden para encordar es: E, G, A, C y E. Esto debido a que hay que igualar las tensiones ejercidas por las cuerdas sobre el puente.

Can anyone verify this? I will look into it. Thank you.

    Hello ,finaly in Englisch.
I have also a Charango very old with no bone in the saddle bit different then yours but also with a knot on the bridge.
I amplefided it with a misi acoustic trio pickup.
    But my question is.
Do you like this strings what do you use on the video, i have the same strings on my charango they don 't feel good to me.
Witch brand string came of from youre Charango.
    Greetings from Holland

This is an inexpensive charango. The strings that came on it were black nylon strings. I think I like these nylgut strings slightly more.
I do not know what professional grade charangos have, but that would probably be the best option if you can find them.

    • @John-bg3mm

I made a mistake. I do not use the nylgut strings. Maybe you would like the nylgut strings better.

I was thinking about building a charango. Are these strings all the same width/diameter? If they were the same diameter, could I use the same diameter of nylon string for all the strings but tune them up to the correct notes? Or is each string specifically made for the note it is played at. Eg: guitar strings being thinnest at the 1st string and thickest at the 6th string. Thanks!

Some strings are slightly different thicknesses, most noticeably the higher two strings.
