As a great MSX fan (and collector) since the 80s, I am amazed to find something done professionally, by someone who is not a stupid screaming nerd that keeps laughing and repeatedly saying "WTF?" with annoying high pitched voice. Thank you, sir.
Hey! I forgot! It is worth to mention that Penguin Adventure was produced by Hideo Kojima 1 year BEFORE Metal Gear! :-) Thanks again for the GREAT work!
@@strafefox Penguin Adventure was a real showcase game you could show anyone unconvinced about MSX. My ZX Spectrum and C64 owning friends were very impressed at the time.
Ha! That's great! :) But don't go back too far ;) But yeah I'm still quite satisfied they way some videos turned out like the Metal Gear Solid video and the MSX episode. Others however like Castle of Illusion and Secret of Mana...I think I can do a much better job now, especially when it comes to the writing.
Wonderful video showing the MSX Konami Library, I only discovered MSX games due to BlueMSX but man did I not regret it, it's a good system with great games and fun for everyone.
I like all your MSX-related videos, but this one is the best. BTW, MSX was also wide-spread in ex-USSR because the Ministry Of Education installed a lot of networked Yamaha MSX/MSX2 classes in schools.
All those great memories living at my parentshouse playing with my Dad (especialy konamis boxing and zanac)on our philips MSX2 computer.... How I long back to those days sometimes. The finest of them all was back in 1987 when my mom bought me Metal Gear cartridge (i still have it). I'm so glad i can play it on my smartphone now and then. i am 43 btw MSX in my heart 4-ever
This brought back many great memories, and introduced me to some nice looking MSX games that I've never known before. Seeing the gorgeous box art renders makes me drool and weep nostalgia tears. I want to be rich to collect these beauties.
Konami was to MSX what Ocean was to ZX Spectrum. Knightmare, King´s Valley and Penguin Adventure, are top notch, absolute classics, great fun to play even today. It´s a pity Konami´s current situation... By the way, superb editing and narration on all videos I´ve seen on your channel.
Just discovered this channel, gotta say great work... I had an MSX back in the day, a Toshiba HX10, great little computer until it mysteriously stopped working. Here in the UK most of the games were on cassette tapes, I did have Konami's Yie Ar Kung Fu on cartridge though.. these days I have to settle for emulation
MSX was also produced by Microsoft for the Japanese market. This was Microsoft's first foray into the gaming industry (technically) 36 long years ago (1983). You can play the original Metal Gears in the US on copies of MGS 3 Snake Eater Special Edition for the PS3.
I was going to keep a pedantic pronunciation correction to myself, but when the narrator did it for Manbow I reconsidered. So here I go: The name Uṣas has a little dot under the first for a reason, which is that it makes a "SH"-like sound (specifically retroflex, which distinguishes it from Sanskrit's other palatal "SH"-like sound). It means "dawn" in Sanskrit, and it's also the name of the dawn goddess. It's also a direct cognate with other Indo-European dawn goddesses like Greek Eos, Latin Aurora, and even English Easter.
Thanks for posting this great video, I really enjoyed it.Konami was one of the best game providers for the MXS system. Super Cobra and Antartica Adventure where the very first games I played. Still love them.
Oh, the memories! I was a lucky owner of a MSX (HOTBIT, made by SHARP) back on that day. I've spend hours playing some of those games (and waiting them to load from a cassete tape, lol). About the Kings Valley, I think the first game is more iconical.
Cool! The MSX is definitely the system I played the most as a kid in the 80s. Especially Maze of Galious! I still love that game :) The first King's Valley is probably more icon indeed, but none of my friends had it, instead we played the second game a lot.
Space Manbow is a MSX2 title hence the ability of smooth side scrolling. The first cartridge to use the SCC chip was in fact Gradius /Nemesis 1.. Sweet presentation and very informative.. Thanks, now I am on my way to get the good old Svi 728 Msx fired up after 20 years in the attic..
Hell yes! I love you're video's Strafefox. Konami has been one of my favourite companies in the video game franchise. Mostly because of Space Manbow and Gradius/Nemesis. Also they love to put reference in there own game. You can play chalenger 1985 from Gradius on some Dance Dance revolution arcade, and yu-gi-oh also featured Gradius and stuff. ETC. I love konami! Thanks for putting this video up. I fear that people might forget about old games and events from the past. I'm not old enough to lived them myself, but I'm sure as hell loving it!
Thanks, great video. I used to have a Toshiba MSX and Konami were the best. There's loads of games here I hadn't even heard of, looks like many are MSX2 games, don't think we got that here in the UK. Never knew about the cartridge combo! I think Konami sold their licensing to Ocean in about 1987 here in the UK because when Green Beret was released - what a disappointment, nowhere near the quality we came to expect from Konami.
I'm halfway through the video and so far, I'm pretty sure only 1 game mentioned is actually an MSX game (Antarctic Adventures), the rest are MSX2 games. The MSX is almost identical to a Colecovision and aside from more ram, use the same exact hardware. The MSX series, particularly the MSX2, has some good games, but you really need an MSX 2 to enjoy most of these games.
This video was meant to introduce people to the MSX konami games in general. So I didn't draw a line between MSX1,MSX2 or MSX2+ games. btw: Maze of Galious, Knightmare, Penguin Adventure, Nemesis 2 were all MSX1 games and King's Valley 2 both MSX1 and 2.
Or "Thunder Cross 1 Special Manbow Edition" :) It was release before ThunderCross 2. Although I do think that Space Manbow has a bit more charm and style.
The red MSX with the built in joystick is one of the BEST looking computers of all time. And the grey one too. Though the joystick is on the RIGHT side which is annoying lol should be on the left. I notice you left out the joystick in your 3D model. It's such an unknown and underrated system that not maybe people even know about.
after so many years and i'm 34 by the way, i still go back to my msx game collection. to enjoy a those amazing quondam games. Darn that gradious, i can't pass the second level grrrr. lol
I do love Konami's MSX library (though I'll have to look into how the ROM combinations work) ... But I'll have to check out the F1 Spirit remake! And its no secret that those that know me know that La-Mulana is hands down my favorite homebrew game of all time... and the selection that plays at the end is one of my favorite songs from said game) I forget if they developed the Maze of Galious remake, but I remember them at least doing their own skin for it. I did discover a neat homebrew MSX game that's actually similar to Knightmare, it's called Blue Warrior and should still be out there free to download... the soundtrack just blows my mind as to how good it is.
Excellent video! One thing that's very sad about the MSX is that so many of the games as well as English translations that were once posted online have been lost to time it seems.... it seems there isn't any sort of central location where the ROM's have been collected. Do you know of any good places to find MSX ROM's as well as any English translation patches? These works of art deserve to be preserved and I would really love to be able to enjoy some of the more obscure titles and translations.

The MSX game was loosely based on the 80s King Kong sequel "King Kong Lives" which was sometimes known as King Kong 2. Jessica Lang starred in the 76 remake, Linda Hamilton had a role in King Kong lives.

I just wish that the MSX Metal Gear was proted to other console correctly, not becoming a garbage game like it was on the NES. I'm hoping to play the MSX version someday without the engrish, poor gameplay, and lack of metal gears the NES version had.
This is actually incorrect. Maze of Galious, Penguin Adventure and Gradius/Nemesis 2 are all MSX 1. King's Valley II has both an MSX 1 and MSX 2 version. The MSX2 version was only released in Japan.

has the angry video game nerd done a MSX episode??
Avgn is a moron. This is quality stuff for real gamers.
I would thing It's a voice actor narrating the video. Not necessarily a gamer.
Also, the MSX was very popular in the Middle East, especially in the Gulf Region countries like in Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia.
Hey! I forgot!

So that's why Penguin Adventure makes an appearance in MGS4 ;)

Kings ValleyII was super epic because of the epic level editor and shareable level-disks; it was Mario Maker 30 years predated !!!
That sounds awesome

What's the track that begins to play at 7:11? I've played quite a few MSX games but that soundtrack sounds really good? What game is that?
Its from La Mulana (the Tiamat boss theme), technically not really a MSX game :)
Damn, man, these videos of yours are better than pizza with double cheese!
and they have fewer calories! :)
Thanks so much man!
A video about the best cassette MSX games would be nice. Hunchback, Jet Set Willy, Manic Miner and Sweet Acorn deserve a mention.
Awesome video, didn't even know what the MSX was now I know
and knowing is half the battle.........
Thanks and... Yo Joe!!!!
i own an MSX AX-370 i loved Metal gear soild1/2, Knightmare, Nemesis 2 and 3(my favorite and most played) and King's valley

that's frome la mulana, when you battle the boss tiamat

Anyone have a link to a good documentary about this computer?
damn this is some high quality video editing right there, nice!
but why didn't you cover aleste as one of the main games.. :(
Thanks! Well I never played Aleste back in the day, I was a huge Konami fanboy :)
But I will take it in consideration for a followup episode!
Awesome video man!
I love metal gear msx
Good stuff, i appreciate your work. Too bad that i used to have those 2 cartridges and i didn't know about the secret combination 20 years ago
Awesome video my friend, can you do a video on other MSX games such as Aleste? Chexeder?
Thanks :)
Yeah maybe I will do a non-konami themed MSX ep in the future, good suggestion.
I wish I could slave and force you to make videos like that 24/7! :)
Hahaha :)
Well if it helps I going to upload a new video every 2 weeks on Fridays for the next few months.
guys. You didnt mention at all that it was also VERY popular in the middle east. MSX was a massive hit that even the middle east acquired the rights to have an arabic version called "Sakher"
Too bad we never got MSX here in the States. Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 are awesome (played them in MGS3 Subsistence)!
Well they were selling MSX 1 systems but they never were a success.
Is the music from 2:07 from MSX version of Metal Gear? By the way, I hope that the reason for you having erased all the previous comments was not my previous one. Well, I am going to say again: This is a very professionally done job. Congratulations!
+CP200S thanks so much and I won't dare to delete any of your posts :o
btw: that music is from Metal Gear 2 for the MSX.
Awesome video. The memories! T_T
Thanks! Yeah the MSX was a wonderful system :) Lot's of fun and great memories playing the Konami games back in the day with my brother and friends.

wow. I want an MSX! I hope I can at least find some decent MSX emulators.
I heartily recommend BlueMSX (www.bluemsx.com). It runs absolutely everything and is quite easy to use.
Thank you!

linda hamilton??? do you mean jessica lang?

great video... but you forgot emulation as a way to experience Konami games ;)
Emulation is in a legal limbo so many channels recommend to get the original versions.
I have maze of galious on NES nobody ever talks about that game anymore
:O Konami for MSX is the best.
At the moment I make remakes of Némesis, Vampire Killer and Penguin Adventure, but in future I wil make more remakes of MSX Konami's games.
Awesome! I will check them out
strafefox Thanks, you can free download at remakesonline, com
Wonderful wok
ma best collection

Thanks! and have fun with your MSX!
so Konami always had its eyes set upon a open world exploration castlevania game, neat (Simon's quest doesnt count cus it sucks)
treasure of USHAS, isn't it? see the accent below the S
Shit if Konami made games like this still people wouldnt say they suck haha

Thumbs up to that : )

There's a problem with this review: the majority of the games, if not all of it, are games for MSX 2, a upgrade to the original MSX.
