Before the Esso Tiger, Humble's first automotive icon was Happy the Oil Drop. In several other countries, there were several variations of Happy being done.
The first one is a theatrical advertisement, circa 1938. At the time, Esso sponsored a series of daily local radio newscasts known as "YOUR ESSO REPORTER"- so this "disguised commercial" appropriated the title to make movie patrons think this was an extention of what they heard on radio...yes, in the '30s and '40s, inbetween "coming attractions", one/two reel shorts, newsreels, cartoons, travelogues, et. al., there were also "commercials"...
I've heard of "Your Esso Reporter". I believe it was a CBS Radio presentation, as the station in my town that carried it was CBS. Could've been syndicated, but I think it was CBS.
The former WTOP-TV 9 (long since W*USA 9) in the mid-1950s had a news program called "Your Esso Reporter" and Don Richards was the anchorman. It aired weeknights at 6:00 before Douglas Edwards did the national news for CBS.
this Barry bastard makes up more shit than any 300 people combined on UA-cam! If you read all the crazy bullshit stuff he comments about, you'd know he has no idea..
Thank you for posting these. I love these old Esso commercials. It was hard to keep straight what was Standard, Humble, Esso, Enco but at least now it's all ExxonMobil. No cool commercials now though.
Due to antitrust laws, they couldn't use the Esso trademark in certain states. Ironically, Enco (which stood for energy company) means "stalled car" in Japanese, no fooling!
Gary Kerns Just like Nova means "no go" in Spanish. LOL And with all the non-ExxonMobil Standards no longer using that name, maybe ExxonMobil can bring it back here?
I didn't know that Nova is Spanish for no go. Interestingly, though they probably do it at other stations, at an Exxon station a few blocks from where I live, on the pumps, the have Exxon, Mobil (not ExxonMobil), and get this Esso decals.
it's been a long time since I saw the "FOR USE AS A MOTOR FUEL ONLY - CONTAINS LEAD" pump warning. Wondered what else you could do with gasoline. Then, I learned the uses of "WHITE GASOLINE" (gasoline without Ethyl fluid). Camping stoves, for one.
Put a tiger in your tank too plus free glasses food trays key chains etcetera too kh was back in the 50s to 60s too as my dad had one too a esso gas station too and so did our two different friends too on high street in Williamsport Pennsylvania and by the keystone hotel too on east 3rd street too was by the old ecks white trucks garage too kh
@dixiewife47 In the late 60s-early 70s period a gas station pump was captured in one of the ad sections. It was $0.279 a gallon. That was at a Standard station in Missouri (now BP area).
This is bringing up another brand, but I can remember a Quaker State Oil jingle from the early '70s (I'm 55 now) that went "Quaker State your car to keep it running young". Trivia tidbit: At one time Quaker State made gasoline, but I'd guess they got out of that line decades ago.
The cost of gas then ? WEll, back in the mid 70s I remember dad complaining since gas was 75 cents a gallon. Id say that back in the 30s, gas was probably 25 cents or so.
Southern Yank. Wrong...in 1973 I got leaded gas for abot 26 to 31 cents a gallon right before embargo then it went to an unheard price of 50 + cents maybe to 70 not sure but thats close..
I'm 55 now, but remember well the embargo. I don't know if this was the case in other locales, but where I've lived all my life (Fairmont, West Virginia), gas was sold on certain days of the week only to people who had license plates that ended in even numbers, and on the other days, folks with odd last numbers got gas.
WAS EXXON'S GAS STATION FORMER NAMES ESSO, AND STANDARD OIL? THE REASON WHY I AM ASKING THIS QUESTION IS BECAUSE MY GRANDFATHER USED TO WORK AT STANDARD OIL.
you cannot have a video with a sign turning into a face and talking “good motoring” to you and turning back into the sign without billons of rooms fans in the comment section
That Esso sign morphing into a face and talking to you=absolute nightmare fuel!
lol yeah but i like it nonetheless but all gas is generally the same but they all got their special formulas lol
Creepy as hell. I thought that Speedee from McDonald's was bad!
Creepy is an understatement. 😰
@@uncovidvaxxforthestrongand3582 It Is A-100 From Interminable Rooms Origin Face
Yeah, stop it as it morphs from ESSO into the "Happy Motoring" face, and it looks downright scary!
They never should’ve change the name to Exxon.

Yeah the happy motoring face is pretty creepy.

@@siriusstuff3177 Please. Don't bash nostalgic television. This is a real television news program.
Alot of respect to Esso they were the only gas stations in the south that were not segregated
Often listed in the "Green Book" back in the day.
In Canada it was Imperial Esso .
lstvanN1961, I always thought "Esso" was a phoneticization of "S-O"...
John Laszek it is
Standard Oil.
Esso means Eastern States Standard Oil. 🛢️
“Happy Motoring”
Thank you for posting these. I love these old Esso commercials. It was hard to keep straight what was Standard, Humble, Esso, Enco but at least now it's all ExxonMobil. No cool commercials now though.
gasstationlending Carter was there too. And then you had all the other (non-Esso) Standards: Chevron, Amoco, Sohio (the original), and Mobil.
Due to antitrust laws, they couldn't use the Esso trademark in certain states. Ironically, Enco (which stood for energy company) means "stalled car" in Japanese, no fooling!

Ah, the wonders of lead.
One of the best logos ever.
Oval, with red and blue lettering. And if course the backward 3 for the 'E'.
Eastern States Standard Oil - ESSO - a trademark of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey.
Shame they changed the name to Exxon. 😕
Nah, ESSO's just the phonetic pronunciation of the letters "S" and "O" for the initials of Standard Oil (in this case, New Jersey).

The two Humble ads were the most interesting of the batch!
You would say that. 🤨

The old Standard Oil company was better. De Icer gasoline works so well in subzero weather. Adding Heet to your gas was such a barrier.

Sure does!
It's true, the little woman does like happy motoring.

When did they become Exxon after they merged with Mobile?
Esso is the best petrol station, it’s just is
Does anyone know when the last Humble commercial is from? I want to use it in a paper, but i cannot find an exact year for the commercial. Thanks! :)

How old is it? It'd have to be at least 46 years old now, as Esso became Exxon in 1972.
Mostly in Canada now
No more Esso. They now sell gas under the Imperial brand.
