Thank you for this video mate, great info and rundown of documentary wedding photography. I'd love to know how to approach the couples portrait session on the day (if that's something they ask for) with a more journalistic approach.
Milad K hey mate thanks for the comment, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I don’t often do any couples portrait session but of course if the couple ask I will. For the session I will try to time it right for the best light during the day and choose a nice backdrop. Then I just ask them to walk around and enjoy some time together and that’s about it. Depending on how comfortable they are together this usually leads to some relaxed and lovely photos. If needs be I will pose them a little more but I try not to do that as it doesn’t fit my style or why the couple booked me. I hope that helps and I might add this as a video at some point. I haven't watched the full video yet but during documentary weddings do they still have timelines and do flatlays and getting ready shots ?
Nita thanks for your comment. I normally get the couple to complete a questionnaire which covers the timeline for the day and I will always speak to them to run through everything before the wedding. It’s important for me to know the main events as it helps me anticipate the action. However as I am documenting the day I will just follow what happens so having a really detailed timeline is not as important really. I just go with the flow! I don’t tend to do any flat lays or move things like shoes etc but I will photograph them, ideally I try to capture them as part of the day so the shoes and jewellery as it’s being put on for example as I think this gives a better image with more context. But I do capture details as they are very much part of the day / story. I hope that helps and maybe I will do a video on it at some point. Thanks again.
