Whoops perfectly sploited Last Rites biggest weakness: itself. If last rites doesn’t break the other bots in a few hits, Last Rites will begin to break itself apart
Awesome fight! I love the battlebots version DUCK! it has so much personality in the box and was a joy to watch this year. I really hope to see it return for a 2019 season.
I was super bummed that Duck didn't get in the top 16 this season of battlebots, it was a mean bot and you could see Ray Billings sweat when your match was aired. Having a Tombstone vs. Duck fight at the start of the post-season would have been intense!
If I remember correctly, when they were explaining how the fights work, they showed the four bots tombstones was going to fight in battlebots, Minotaur, Gygabyte, whiplash and DUCK!
Bronco’s fight was a little sad to watch but it was kind of expected because Duck was built more for facing spinners (such as tombstone) to make the other bot destroy itself. Bronco wasn’t a good matchup, but if it was any other bot I could bet money on you and Duck!! winning. Good luck for the rest of the season, Hal!!
Last Rites has a weapon that can destroy itself. Whoops exploited this. Then it lost aginst Touro Maximus because Touro does not have a self destructing weapon.
Well, Whoops also lost to Touro Maximus because you can't fight vertical spinners in the same way as horizontal spinners. Against a drum like Touro, you'd need a sturdy wedge. I personally would have used the wedge spike against Touro Maximus rather than the AR500 block. After all, that's what worked against Melanistic Leopard every time I went up against one of the team Mugga Junk D2 kits (though I've since developed an attachment specifically to beat D2s with the "wolverine claws").
The idea of using a flat plate against a drum spinner like Touro Maximus is to take the hits and absorb the energy, while hoping their weapon breaks from its own hits. In the beginning of the match, the flat plate was working well, and at least one of Touro's weapon belts broke. I could see it on the floor and was optimistic that if I held on I might be able to completely disable their weapon. From my experiences against their drum spinners, their front forks that feed their opponent into their drum will eventually get under a wedge and turn the match to their advantage. I'm not disagreeing with your comment that a wedge might be a good way to beat a drum, but it's not a clear choice and Whoops! was designed to take big hits over and over. Even after fighting Touro Maximus after Last Rites, and then getting stuck on the wall, the bot was fully functional. Next time I'll use a different fastener to hold my plow's bolts on ;-)
Hal, just wanted to drop by and say, you won that rumble on Battlebots for the 16th slot. Bearing in mind your competition through the series, I think you deserved a slot outright. Were it up to me, I would have ranked you 4th behind Minotaur, Bronco, and Tombstone. Love the durability of your bot. My daughter and I really enjoyed watching you fight. Best of luck in the future.
Don't bother answering this, just food for thought: Maybe a 3rd pair of wheels (even if they're un-powered) for guide. Perhaps, some spikes that extend from the sides of DUCK (screw them in and out of your frame for easy change-out) to protect the wheels? As for the weapon, I'll be interested in seeing what you come up with.
Tombstone was its original name when it competed in the 2004 NPC charity open and in the 2009 pro championships, which counted as battlebots events (at least the battlebots wiki counts them as battlebots). But for events such as robogames, it was change to Last Rites because something to do with copyrighting names. This why bots such as Sewer snake and son of ziggy have the names Stinger and lucky in battlebots
And now the next generations of whoops and tombstone are in the 2018 season! Don't know if whoops (now duck) made it through, but I'd make a great re-match
I'm here to protest the judges' decision per Bombshell over Hal Rucker's bot at the Event That Shall Not Be Named. The ruling encourages playing possum (in the future). The Ruckers clearly won that rumble. Bombshell was disabled far too long, roughly 70 seconds. I hope next season Hal's bot bleeps up Bombshell *and* Tombstone in a manner similar to this video. Go Rucker family! Quackem to H3ll!
Wahinies last rites. I guess since BattleBots decided to randomly take a year off, Ray got bored so he took his other robot and put it into this tournament. Last Rites is good, but he is sure as hell no Tombstone. If he would have put Tombstone in there, he would have ripped that bot to shreads.
You would be right there. Last Rites has competed at Robogames for about 15 years and Ray obviously couldn't use the Tombstone name due to Battlebots copyright stuff. Whoops I think actually pre dated Duck by a few years, and only ran alongside Duck in 2018.
That's great to hear! Last time I saw your bot it showed a lot of potential of dealing serious damage and being able to absord the energy better of impacts compared to let's say Tombstone. Can't wait to see version 2.0
Are you the DUCK! guy?! I didn't even know that! That's awesome! I was _thoroughly_ impressed and entertained with that 3 way match. Congratulations on your win! I look forward to seeing more DUCK!
The two names were interchangeable. Tombstone was i itially a super heavyweight back in 2004 while Last Rites was a heavyweight. When Battlebots returned in 2009 and then in 2015 onwards Ray used the Tombstone name. I think due to licencing and contracts he couldn't use the name Tombstone outside of Battlebots so between 2015 and 2018 Tombstone would compete at Robogames under the name Last Rites. It is the same for most Battlebots though. Minotaur was Touro Maximus, Free Shipping was Original Sin, Duck was Whoops etc etc
This might be a bit silly, but heres an idea for ring master if you can change the rings in a reasonable amount of time: a flail ring. (Using chains) This would solve a major issue that ring spinners have with weapon on weapon contact by not having the ring contact the opponents weapon. This also of course means that you will less concern with being hit in general, and you might get around to vulnerable part of a bot, making it especially effective against off set bar spinners Now of course this has downsides. Theres safety which might prevent from going in with that ring, it likely wont be as strong as the normal one and might not get the bite. This is why it should be using chains. and the increased radius might help compensate for something that either cant, or has a very hard time being single toothed (although it might not have an issue in the first place due to its radius) again you still likely wont be hitting as hard as normal but id imagine itd be enough.
Old comment but two issues: If you decouple the teeth from the ring, you loose a lot of inertial mass so it's not going to really hit hard. And if the chain breaks then you just have high speed projectiles flying through the arena which might cause safety issues if the flails are heavy enough.
Almost every time I have ever seen Ray Billings lose, it's been because his design loses control too easily. I love Tombstone/Last Rites, but you'd think he would have figured out how to mitigate that by now.
@@Lakerguy1000 The armor I would ad would stop just behind the wedge, and share the same angle the front wedge has, but protect the exposed wheels. It works pretty well, but once the wheels get taken out, it is in deep trouble.

V Star 1300 Adventures well yea ik. It’s inevitable to fully protect your wheels by simply driving.
