  • Glasspacks Vs Flowmaster- Which one do you prefer #glasspacks #holleyIn this video I compare the difference in sound of my previous exhaust to my current set up. The car is a 1956 Belair with a 327 SBC and a 3 speed automatic transmission. The previous exhaust system was long tube headers with 2 1/4" pipe into generic Glasspack mufflers. They exited out the back with chrome pencil tips under the rear bumper. The current set up is Corvette style cast exhaust manifolds into 2 1/2" pipe. It has two Flowmaster 40 series Delta mufflers with no crossover pipe. The tail pipes are tucked up under the corner of the bumpers so that they are not seen. In the Glasspack clips it had a Carter 600 cfm carb and in the Flowmaster clips it has a Holley Sniper.
Below is the link to the Flowmaster 40 Delta mufflers.

For close to 20 years, i fabricated Lobak Mufflers, and they were custom made in different sizes for different applications. They were track mufflers on a lot of stock cars and for dirt track cars, and we even made them to as side pipes on cobra cars as well as inserts in boat headers. Flowmaster wouldnt test against them in the early years, and flowmaster had a problem of the ends breaking off. The patent ran out on them and now a few companies make copies.

I have Flowmaster on my 1977 Malibu --- 406 with large cam, 3 inch custom full exhaust. Damn , its a very sweet sound and get alot of compliments . I also went from long headers to shorty headers.
My car pulls really hard and tons of top end power.
Really liked you comparison , 40 yrs ago we ran either gas packs, " Turbo mufflers" or the Hemi mufflers.

    When I was a teenager I had a 66 Plymouth Satellite 361 ci ,3 speed auto .
I installed Hooker headers ,with Thrush header mufflers running all the way pass the bumper .
At normal driving it wasn't to loud ,but at full throttle,

Best sounding exhaust system i ever had was my 57' chevy 283 with rams horn manifolds, dual 2 1/2 " pipe and Andretti turbo mufflers. I like the way both of them sound. I have an old Dodge Dakota with the 4.7 V8. I put glasspacks on it shortly after I bought it (new in 2000), but switched to 40 series Flowmasters after about a year. The Flowmasters sounded a lot better...but DAMN did those things drown out any conversation you hoped to have with the person in the back seat, lol. My opinion as a guy who graduated high school in the early 90s....glass packs were considered the old fashioned "el-cheapo" budget muffler at that time.....flowmasters were the new and "high tech & state of the art" thing that the serious street race cars were running to get into the 10 to 12 sec et range....they sounded really exotic untill every 5.0 mustang on earth had them by the late 90s.

They both sound good but call me strange, I like the glass packs a little better.

Glasspacks ftw….i got 3” dual glasspacks about 16” after the collectors on my long tube headers and the exhaust exits right past the door openings on my nova before the rear tires…..its gotta LSA supercharged 370” lq9 in it, youd never know it was supercharged cause the exhaust is so loud you cannot hear the blower…..my c/10 on the other hand has 2.5” summit flowmaster knock offs and basically routed the same as my nova but instead it has a vortech centrifugal supercharged 5.3 in it and its definitely noticable ….the blower is way louder than the motor!!!…..im gonna put the dual 3” glasspacks on it soon too!!!

Depends on the build for me I prefer flowmasters tho especially on a hot rod or something but something to cruise in glass packs aren’t bad

    Great 56 !
    Great comparison.
    I wonder if it’s a generational thing ? I’m 55 Y/O.
I usually HATE the sound of Flow Masters. I took mine off my 70 Chevy truck 5 minutes after I got that truck home & put glass packs on it.
Yours are the best sounding flow masters I ever heard, but I still strongly prefer the packs.

Thank you. I did not install an x or H pipe and I think that is why they still sound raspy at the high RPM's :)

I'm 63 and have Flowmasters in my 56 for 16 years with headers, 327 ci and turbo 350 trans. Love the sound of my Flowmasters 😊

I’ve got the best of both worlds on my F250 with a 351w. 2 1/2” into a single 3” x 12” long resonator that goes into a Flowtech Raptor (flowmaster knockoff 1

Sounds better with the glass packs for sure. I have always liked a muffler like the dyno max ultra flows. They are straight through like a cherry bomb style glass pack but much larger which cuts out some of the high frequencies and rasp for a deeper tone. I always thought glass packs were too raspy and flowmasters always sound hollow and cheap for some reason.

Flow Masters are the way to go, sound so much better than the borla mufflers they putting on everything now just sounds like the cars are farting with boral sounds awful.

K’know, I’ve seen a lot more BelAirs on the road lately around Clark County. Not really sure why, but I ain’t complaining.
