Let's cut to the chase...Bergoglio and his gangsters are just setting the stage to eventually 'MARRY' gay couples...it's as simple as that. Whoever fails to see that has not been paying attention. The same playbook has been played over and over again really since Vatican II! First they said the Latin Mass and Liturgy will remain as part of the normal Liturgy...now this Pope is even axing what little is left of it! First they said that Communion in the hand was only going to be rare and the exception, now it is the norm and many clergy are not even allowing Holy Communion on the tongue anymore! First they said that the laity helping with Communion or reading was going to be rare and in emergency situations only. Now you can hardly get a priest to give you Holy Communion let alone read anything during Mass! The list goes on and on. I didn't even bother to read that document. As typical leftist propagandists, Bergoglio & Co are simply using deceptive tactics and laguage to get their agenda through, one way or the other. That's all there is to it. Cahtolics BEWARE...they are establishing another Church which is NOT Catholic!
I would prefer the word homosexual blessing rather than gay blessing. Honesty is best and does not glamorise this travesty.

Bergoglio and his group are liberal, socialist, Marxist, communist! They acted exactly as that type of people: super lied and do and speak anything to get what they want. They exploited the power, positions, language, theology, pastoral works… to destroy the church. Super evil!
Whoever chose this word in the English translation is a mischief maker.
Jesus will marry the Church. Who is the Church? We are. Are we not men also? So we will be coupled with Jesus. No sex, just ccoupled. And by the way, all couples get to a point in life where they have no more sex for years and years until they die. Yet they are couples without sex. (That day will be the last day they have to go to confession for being gay and having sex. Then from then on, they just confess other sins.) So, this is all just semantics and you had better bless all people no matter what and not ask questions and keep your nosees out of their business. Do you not have enough on your own plate to deal with? Get the log from your eye first then come take the splinter from mine and you will never succeed in that because we are all on-going sinners which is just the human condition itself. Okay? The saddest part of all this is the timing. People will be so busy debating this document that the birthday of their lord and savior will come and go without them even noticing...

I agree that the timing of this document was very poor. It caused confusion at a time when people should have been focusing on Christ. God is not the author of confusion. Satan is however. This ambiguous document seems to be causing more harm than good. In my view, the new document was unnecessary. I admire the courageous African Bishops for recognizing evil. Tragically, many Bishops and Priests are trying to justify this confusing document. It is not pastoral or loving to confuse your flock. A good Sheppard does not intentionally confuse or upset his sheep.

My wife and I had been dating for only 5 months before she got pregnant with our firstborn. We were not able to get married because she was still going through the annulment process. Our priest friends weren't able to bless us as a couple, but they still gladly gave us individual blessings and we were perfectly fine with that. After her annulment went through, we did all of The Pre-Cana Classes and we were married on The Feast of The Holy Family last year. This year, we can celebrate our first Christmas as a married couple, our first wedding anniversary, and the birth of our second child all within the same week.
So, as someone who has lived in sin and whom God dragged out of it, I do have to agree with Jason when he (basically asks), "What is the goal of the couple?" Is it towards holiness or is it to wave their relationships in everyone's facebook? ( oops, I meant "face")
It's very nice how things have worked out for you, but what if the church had rules that you couldn't ever marry your beloved or have your children because it violated the religion?...That's what conservative Christian institutions say to all gay people.

I don't think the blessing is to bless their sin, but to bless their movement towards holiness. But it's in my opinion a confusing thing, as heterosexual adulterers don't come to a priest to get blessed together. Why would two people involved in sin together also get blessed together? Seems problematic and very strange.

As a priest, thank you for your clarity and love for the Church. We need to know how to express our Faith with compassion but also with truth

yeah this is total denial of the truth. Cool bless gay people as individuals sure cool but blessing them together as a couple is sending a message legitimizing that relationship. I do not feel God is onboard.

I think your ending comment speaks the most clarity. Bless the individuals, full stop. The blessing of any “couple” is where the confusion lies for me. Words matter and our society really struggles with that. It’s pretty commonly understood that “giving your blessing” to something implies approval or acceptance of that situation. I feel badly for the priests put in this situation. There two options seem to be defy the direction of the pope or commit the sin of scandal.
That’s exactly what I commented on Michael Lofton’s Post. Two civilly married gay couples asking for blessing is actually wanting acknowledgment and affirmation of their existing relationship. If they are not even thinking of repenting, reforming and separating to live as God created them to be, how will a blessing lead them to holiness?
Such a blessing (here meaning approval)would have to be denied but if in a conversion they admit they need to break it off and see a priest and ask for a blessing (prayer to live the call of the gospel), the priest can bless (pray for them to be open to grace; think “bless me father for I have sinned”) either individually or as a group/couple if it’s spontaneous because he’s on the move. The document does not insist the priest bless only if both are together. If at a faithful priest’s discretion is validation that is sort and not intercession, he can deny the blessing. I could be wrong but I’m almost certain this is an orthodox interpretation

But you could be missing out on the love of your life. People get divorced for all kinds of reasons that they shouldn’t be blamed for. Our church is so out of touch with reality when it comes to love and marriage. I mean married couples aren’t even allowed to use contraceptives. That’s just insane.
Priests and Prelates are being cancelled for opposing this sin which cries out to heaven. Yet James Martin and Fr. Rupnik are promoted for promoting sin. We are headed in the wrong direction. Never rationalize sin no matter which commandment is violated. This so called blessing is just a prelude to rationalizet sin. This is blessing these couples into Hell. I don’t know how many are aware of the fact that this document was translated from Latin/Italian to English. In the English it refers to giving blessings to individuals as opposed to couples, while the original document as well as in other languages the word is couples.
Translations are very important. And this factor is a serious thing to consider.
In the Catholic Church,
If one commits sin then they need to confess their sin, request absolution, do penance, then sin no more.
A priest should never be asked or expected to bless a sinner without the sinner denouncing their sin & ask for forgiveness then stop sinning

I totally agree, I feel like that is why so many young people are leaving. There is a lack of answers, a lack of clarity and a lack of openly talking about what is wrong and right in particular areas. My boyfriend and I have been very blessed by practicing chastity for 7 years since weve been 17, now getting married(p.s. your books helped a lot). I cant imagine receiving this same grace by simply giving into whatever I felt or desired, exactly as stated, we are all called to pick up our cross, not rely on our own understandings. Real love reflects truth, not brining confusion and trying to please people who are still on a journey to find God. Exactly, if the document replaced "couples" with just saying the individuals could (and should) be blessed, that would seem to solve all the problems. But sadly, it seems that those who wrote the document purposefully used this word and are trying to convince everyone that "couples" does not imply a union.
Let’s face it, the confusion is purposeful, it is intended to create the camel’s nose under the tent, and we all know how that ends: the camel enters the tent and eventually the tent collapses. That is desired end result.

So, in your oppinion, a cohabitating couple, for whatever reason in that state of sinful life, going in a plane or one getting a surgery, cannot receive a blessing for a safe trip or for a good precidure because they are not married in the church?
@@johna1495 If a priest wants to avoid leading couples to think God approves of their relationship, the priest could always bless them individually. But, there's a distinction between a relationship that is unchaste (cohabitation), and one that is intrinsically not ordered towards God's plan for marriage (same-sex and polyamorous relationships).
Your example is not the same as getting a blessing as a couple or for a couple. Of course people can receive a blessing for a surgery or for a trip.

We Catholics must be charitable but discerning. We obey the authority that God has placed above us in everything except sin.
We cannot bless same sex sinful union. God commands us to turn away from sin. To bless sin is to disobey God's commandment.
We must be faithful to the Deposit of Faith entrusted by Christ to His Church, the Catholic Church, to guard, proclaim to all nations, and faithfully hand down to future generations.
The Holy Spirit will preserve the Church.
Solid points and analogies you made, why is it ok to bless same sex but not an adulterous couple or any other active sinful relationship. This is just going to open the door to more progressive ideology. Just look at what has happened to the Anglican Church in England.

The question of how does this play out in real life is quite genius.
It does bring to the fore the challenge the document presents.
If you take it at it’s word the spontaneous blessing of the priest would have to contain something to the effect that the couple being blessed cease soon by the grace of God to be a couple.
That clashes with the implicit intention that I think make most in the gay community celebrate this declaration: the blessing is more like a curse on the couple (from the perspective of one who wants the coupling to flourish, from one seeking it to be “blessed”).
So we end up with this set of strange semantic reversals: give me a blessing which is really a curse which is *really* a blessing.
Does it make any sense to declare this as a kind pastoral break through? Is it not what we have always had available?

I think so too. They may be blessed, but that blessing may not exactly be what they wish for, because they wish for the wrong things, and the blessing is for the objective good to come forth.
I also think many ssa persons celebrated the document prematurely, based on mainstream media reports that quickly proclaimed 'Pope blesses non ss unions!'.
While the document states that only the intimate relations within marriage are morally licit, and that blessing of any other situation is rather an aid in the continual conversion.
So, in a sense, yes, anyone can ask for the spontaneous blessing, but also yes, it's not blessing the sin but rather in order to help to get the individual out of that sin.
I would personally say, as you used the word curse (in _their_ view), I'd rather say the blessing turns into deliverance prayer instead.

Not at all, the document not only NOT extends this practice, but explicitly FORBIDS it. It say no liturgical blessing or any blessing that would make an impression of any similarity tona wedding, or affirming the legitimacy of the ss union, etc.
I don't know what corner of the Church you're from, but if what you say is happening where you live, then that document clearly aims to stop it. I'm aware such tries has been attempted in Germany, but that's by no means a widespread phenomenon in the world Church.
The document isn't perfect, and perhaps it is too permissive in certain ways/wording, but if anything, it actually aims to cease if such a practice occurs.

I think that this is in many ways our doing. I heard someone say that when Israel sinner, Our Lord allowed terrible kings and rulers to come upon her until she turned back to Him. We will see this continue to happen until we convert.

Perfect exposé of the deep rooted practical problems of the Pope's declaration. The declaration creates more confusion than solutions. Typical of the Bergoglian papacy. Abuses will arise no doubt.
Pope Francis himself may have not made this decision alone. Many elites have their hands in the Vatican to corrupt it.

I do not understand how those who are opposed to blessing by their present action can receive one. When our Lord healed, he also said to go and sin no more. Repentance is vital for blessing.
This is great! Thank you! Clarity of this document is very much needed right now. You spoke at a high school I attended last year( I just graduated back in May). It’s good to hear common sense, countless Catholics are confused or refusing to acknowledge and look at the words of this document. It’s disturbing, people like Fr Goring who praise the document as being excellent. The sinful priests we see blessing these “couples”. Absolute madness.
I honestly wonder if critical thinking even exists among most Catholics, or are they the “go along get along” type of crowd?
This document brings up many questions in regard to the papacy also. What are we to make of this pope? Was it a sign from God when lightning struck the Vatican? Will the pope who comes after him be even worse?
I live in a diocese in which the Latin mass is banned, what will they do now that gay unions are “allowed”? Will a ban of some type be put upon priests for not conforming to this document? Similar to what Padre Pio underwent? A complete removed from the diocese and a life of seclusion? Who knows how many priests will mysteriously go missing.

Yes!! Everyone should listen to Father Chris Alar, Divine Mercy, from 12/23. He gave a long talk on this. He said their General Council in Rome told the Marian Fathers NOT to follow this document. This is just the Pope’s opinion so they are not being disobedient. They wrote a letter saying they are not going to follow this because blessing a same sex couple IS the same as blessing a same sex union.
They will bless individuals, but not couples.
All these people (Michael Lofton!) who keep saying a couple is not the same as union aren’t living in the real world. When two same sex people in a relationship come up TOGETHER for a blessing, that’s a UNION you are blessing!
Hi Jason, Carl from SoCal/STK here. Your commentary on this is very insightful. I have to ask, wasn’t this already addressed in March 2021 in an answer to a dubia that clearly states that same sex unions cannot be blessed? The explanation also included the terms relationship and partnership in addition to union.

Maybe I'm wrong abt this, but it read to me like it was simply empowering clergy who minister to folks with SSA to be innovative in how they walk with and accompany them. It's easy to point to Fr. James Martin who, if you look closely, didn't even follow the guidelines of FS. But what about good holy priests who minister to SSA couples who sincerely want to come back to the Faith? One wouldn't necessarily know this unless they were involved, but the pastoral guidelines for dealing with Catholics with SSA or SSA folks who want to return to the Church have not been particularly well-developed. For example, I have known several Catholic friendships between people with SSA who went from being romantic partners to chaste friends and live with each other to provide constant support and accountability. The process was hard, for sure, but it was also very healing as well for both parties. I would think that it is perfectly appropriate to bless those relationships, but understandably, there has been historical hesitation from clergy to do so. It seems like the document was taking the time to talk about exceptional cases, like the ones i mentioned, not necessarily prescribing a rule, if that makes sense. That would explain why it is going to be abused and taken out of context by priests like Fr. Martin, but I guarantee that holy priests will be able to do a lot of good with their ministry in light of the document.
Also, Jason, I would recommend (if you can stomach it without going crazyXD!) the German Document on SS blessings. Much of the language used describing blessing etc is the same in FS, except FS is using it to expressly forbid what the German Doc affirms. Makes me wonder if FS was a response document to begin with...
Finally, to any Catholic who struggles with SSA, know you are not alone and i would highly recommend getting in contact with your local chaplain of Courage International, a Catholic Apostolate for folks with SSA. God bless.

Excellent commentary. However, repentance is a necessary part to the imparting and reception of priestly blessing, whether spontaneous or planned. The FS ignores this and suggests a pre-blessing prayer that the priest gives in a kind of moral vacuum. The couple having no moral engagement or expressed intention to live chastely. Card. Muller has given the definitive analysis and guidance regarding the Document. It is a bedrock for safe navigation through this moral malaise. 🙏

This never goes well for churches that start dabbling w/ this. It went really bad for the Anglican church and they are releasing a similar document this month too. We know what it means w/ them, and it is going the same way for Catholics now.

If i was a priest and a same sex couple came asking for a blessing, let's say their names are jon and eric, i world turn to jon individually and say something like "jon may God bless you and bring you to the fulness of catholic truth in the name of the father and son and holy spirit amen. And then i would turn to Eric and say the same.

Jason, you need to read a document and meaning of it as a whole and not pinpoint some words.
Why no one refers to the following words from the same point (31) of the document "recognizing themselves to be destitute and in need of his help-do not claim a legitimation of their own status".
So the document answered your "dubia": "If they seek legitimacy for their relationship, then it cannot be blessed."
It cannot be more clear. Not only here, throughout entire document.

A couple refers to those persons who are in an illegal union, not on their union, as cardinal Fernandes clarified today.
And if the scriptures were always clear, there would be no need for Magisterium.

I appreciate Jason Evert's thoughts about Pope Francis. Something is needed to discourage men from approaching the priesthood as a way to remain a faithful Roman Catholic. Homosexual men are in the majority in most orders and in the diocesan priesthood. Many are very good men, but their presence discourages heterosexual men from becoming priests. Some have difficulty with women.
