    The Climax gears you showed were to transmit the steam power to the bogies. But it is a standard adhesion loco, operating on normal 2 rail 3’6” gauge track. The only rack railway in Tassie is the Abt line on the west coast where this Climax never operated.

    We had one of those Leylands when I was a kid..we used to drop things on the road through the massive rust holes in the back floor pans!:)

    In many ways to me, the walkaround of the oldies in their aged glory, is more interesting than walking through a museum of restorations.
    The old clunkers tell their life stories, you can see the patched repairs and simple mods the succession of owners did, to keep them running and meet there needs.

    2:43. The bus is an Ansair Flxible Clipper. Built under licence in Australia, as a right hand driver version of the US bus, from 1950. And in service until 1970's. 15:18 Behind the traction engine is an AEC Regal Bobtail bus. Used to ride on these - many years ago now. I saw a video of a curious VW split window Kombi van, in Sweden. It was left hand drive, but the side barn doors were on the left side, which is correct for a RHD drive version.

    Whenever at a museum, ALWAYS do the car park too. It's the law.
    Steamin' Demon truck is an F88 Volvo, one of the first to make inroads (!) into the British truck market. 290bhp and 16 speeds, turned a lot of heads and big favourite on Middle East runs 1970s

    The 2 cylinder Daihatsu start up took me straight back to my Fiat 126 days. Even my wife across the room said that sounds like our old sugar lump!! Very nostalgic sound

    What a great video, bit of sightseeing, stunning scenery and loved the scrap yard you found. Some excellent cars in there and that yellow Renault 17 needs putting back on the road. Iconic 70's and from an age when Renault sold some nice looking and interesting cars.
    The wing badge on the Cortina made me chuckle. Only Ford could find aluminium cylinder heads in the 1980's a technological milestone worth advertising 😂

      I remember at the time Ford got a kick in the pants from the press as the modern-looking XD (like the hearse is based on) had the engines carried over. The Commodores also weren't particularly good, but at least it was a lighter vehicle. The Alloy Head XD came along soon after (with engineering help from Honda, I recall) as an XD series 2 and had tangible improvements for the performance/economy envelope. The last of the Cortinas received the same upgrade. Holden also had to up their game and managed to squeeze better numbers out of their sixes for the VC series Commodore which was otherwise a minor update over the original VB series.

      Cheers ,in the past I owned a Citroen G S Club, 3 speed step thru semi auto and a standard manual 5 speed . I do remember that if you had starter issues ,you had to partially dismantle the exhaust system to get to get to the starter motor . Have also owned 7 Morris minors.

    Yes! Willow Court is one of the best places in the world. It’s always the main attraction whenever we’r passing through New Norfolk area. The antique center out the back also has a whole room full of army surplus.

    That was great, thanks for sharing with everybody. Tassie is my favorite holiday destination here in Australia.......I mean where else could you find somebody's attempt to make a ute out of a P76? LOL. Speaking of utes, you have to check out BMC Australia's Austin 1800 ute.

    Great stuff mate. Love it.
    There is some beautifl places and things in Tassie.
    Shame New Norfolk Asylum is now mostly private owned or Council owned and not much happening with it. Although a horrible past it would bea great tourist atraction.
    Would love some of those old vehicles at the transport museum for restoration, particularly if related to our transport history.
    I have priveledge of being a part of the Tas transport museum. Missed the day that you were there or would have happily showed you around. You missed my project hiding in by the Y & X class and DP. A Leyland National half cab.
    We have some wonderful stuff on site and several projects on long term and future restoration. Always lookng for more volunteers and expertice.

    The bridge you crossed into Hobart was brought down 45 years ago by a bulk ore carrier with the loss of many lives.
    A local entrepreneur started up a ferry service and went on to be one the world's biggest catameran builders. His ships have broken the Atlantic crossing record and ply the English Channel.

      I actually used to work for Leyland Australia....was an apprentice mechanic with them but that was some years after the P76 era....they were made over at the Zetland factory in Sydney but it had closed by the time I started working there at Moorebank and Enfield. A workmate there actually had Targa Florio at one stage. I did see a Force 7 once at a museum in Sydney.

    What an amazing place. If only old vehicles could talk, I'd love to sit down and listen to their life stories.
    As an aside, who else would love a Hubnut Guide to the History and Development of the Windscreen Wiper, either in book or video format? Ok, it's just me, but it would be rather awesome.

    A bit of everything in this video. Tasmania looks a little colder than the mainland, judging by the way some people were dressed. Fascinating site at the old psych hospital - I loved the old architecture of the buildings as much as the transport relics. Did you notice the bumpers on the red TF Cortina? Different to the three piece European version. I really felt for the Tasmanian Devil. WE really need to re-think our relationships with animals - especially now. Thanks again for sharing the experience Ian.

    Splendid finds! Just a note about the Climax loco - it's not rack & pinion, that's the drive to the axles, geared for low speed heavy pulling, popular with logging lines back in the day. :)

    Have you ever test driven a 604 Ian? My 604 came in between my P76 and SD1 in the 90's and had the best ride of any car I had driven. It was also my first introduction into French idiosyncrasies of vacuum operated central locking and people asking me why my XD Falcon had Holden badges.

    There was one p76 ute prototype, it apparently used the bed from a Ford Falcon ute.

    Wow! Lots of interesting stuff down there! I'll have to make a trip to Tassie again! I believe Leyland Nationals were assembled in Australia from CKD kits. Remember plenty of them from my childhood!

    That P76 ute is likely the one made by the uncle of a school friend of mine, who had a bodyworks business in Blackmans Bay. I think it was a HQ Holden 1 tonner ute chassis they used under it.

    I quite liked the P76s back in the day,never owned one but friends had them,although I was never keen on the weird looking back end. Great content as always,looking forward to the P76 review.

      asterix 64 a brother of mine has 3 of them under restoration. All V8 4 speed.
      I saw in a book the updated model that was never built was going to look much better. Shame it never saw the light of day.

    Thanks for the interesting video, yet another place here in Oz I never knew existed.
    FYI the Cortina is a TF model, the final model here, and the alloy head badge refers to an update to the venerable Ford straight sixes, circa 1981 (?)
    Later XD Falcons had that badge as well, instead of the 4.1 badge of earlier cars. Cheers

    My brother would have driven a lot of those green and yellow MTT buses, especially the old Bedfords. His job interview for the job of bus driving was; the boss walking out and noticing a Bedford truck parked out front. Yours, he asked my Brother. Upon hearing yes, said, the job is yours. Very quick interview process. He was a bus driver for nearly 30 years before he retired.

    Hi Ian, great video,all the cars in that hospital going rotten,shame none can be repaired,the Leyland National bus I remember these back in the UK,that red Cortina looked rapid with the engine and sound.

    In the 70s my cousins had a V8 P76, and it was a luxurious way to travel. Rear seat comfort was exceptional.

    I had several holidays in Tasmania when I lived I Melbourne. A lovely place then and it looks like it still is. I owned a 1981 Handivan. Bought in 1986 it was by far the youngest car I've ever owned. A great city car; excellent economy, easy to park, and surprisingly quick in urban traffic. IIRC mine was 550cc.
    I was about to say I can relate to the Tassie Devil's predicament in the current situation, but I can't really. I've got doors that I can open.

      I think that devil video was taken at Bonorong wildlife sanctuary? If so, most of their animals are indeed released back in to the wild as they are an animal hospital and only temporarily house animals.

      Devils are nocturnal...its in a wildlife sanctuary and the usual feeding times are in the daylight so that visitors can view them. Not fair on the animal.

    Oh yes! You did say you had a Daihatsu review coming up. Looking forward to it. Loved the review of the yelliw Sirion you did in Wales a while back. I've loved Daihatsus since owning a 1996 1.5 Charade. My better half's kids nicknamed mine, "the Daishitsu". The name stuck.

    Some of those vehicles were there last time I went to Willow Court. A fave place. I love the Saturday market in the main street. I go there to treasure hunt and photograph the old cars. I post the pictures on Wordpress from time to time. I remember seeing a lot of these including the AC/ DC bus. This got sold and I noticed it was taken to Victoria on the mainland.

    At 4:44 the truck that baffled you resembles a Morris C8 truck from the war era and looking through the video at 4:08 just to the left of the TK (MK?) cab is a white truck with a similar design to the other onejust around the corner.

    A good few WW2 Morris 1 ton trucks, known as Morris as their design was the one that the WD accepted but were built by many factories in the Empire as then was, only ones built by Morris were badged. Mainly used to haul artillery pieces. Same happening now with ventilators being built by many manufacturers to a standard design.

      Apparently it's a Ford truck but one that was originally a Chevrolet design. Like the Jeep, it seems it was open season just to build enough of them during the war.

    Oh Wow! I'd love the Peugeot! I've never seen a station wagon in the flesh but a school mate had a near new 404 sedan. The GM powered bus needs a visit from Scott,the Bus grease Monkey.
    The P76 was a far better car than the Holden or Ford offerings but not quite as good as the valiant..
    The Ford Army truck is a Canadian Design, known officially as the military pattern and you could get Chev or Ford. In NZ I Drove a 10 ton version with a wrecker crane on it. They had the same(ish) body but their own chassis. In OZ they were known as Blitz... like the opels.

    I don't know if I mentioned it previously, but a nickname for the P76 in the day was "P38" because it was only ever half the car it was supposed to be.
    That XD Falcon hearse has the front clip and bonnet from an LTD. A lot of that went on "upgrading" base-model vehicles to higher spec ones. Hearses were commonly done like this to save on the cost of converting a Fairlane or LTD sedan when you could do a Falcon or Fairmont instead and then swap the bonnet and front lights.
    The Toyota Corolla was rebadged as the Holden Nova, the Toyota Camry as a Holden Apollo. Toyota released a re-badged VN Commodore as the Lexcen, named after the designer of the winged keel on 'Australia II' that won the America's Cup boat race, but it only came with the 3.8 litre V6 Holden got from Buick.
    Mount Victoria is quite different climatically from Hobart. The temperature difference can apparently differ by up to 15 Centigrade degrees with windchill adding to that!

      yes you are right. Holden had a long history of re badging other cars as well,such as the Holden Gemini a re badged Isuzu, Holden Astra, actually a Nissan Pulsar,and later the Holden Astra which was an Opel from Germany. Holden tried to compete with the others by simply placing a Holden badge over an existing Japanese car,or German car.

      To be fair, Ford also sold a lot of its cars from other parts of the world, and the Laser and Telstars were thinly disguised Mazdas.

    The Leyland National actually appeared in several locations in Australia. I agree that it is a really lovely design.

    The Tasmanian Devil I used to watch as a kid used to go round in circles like that, only much quicker. Not sure it is natural behaviour though.

    oh, it gets better and better Hubnut goes Rock and Roll .........AC/DC tour bus that's musical history. I've heard of Hard Rock Cafe but how about turning it into a road cafe a REAL Hard Rock Cafe. For those about drink your tea, we salute you!(You have to be a fan to get that).

      Ivano Cascone ... if it’s the one I’m thinking of it has the turbo diesel and 5 speed manual from a 505 and a few years ago was for sale for about A$2k.

    That Holden Monaro was the 2nd series & was a “HT” of 1969 & came in various models from a 161 & 186 c.i. Sixes with 3 on the tree & 4 on the floor & Auto’s including the introduction of Australian designed & built 253 & 308 c.i. V8’s also with 350 Chevrolet V8’s in the GTS, this first design lasted to the “HG” the first being the “HK” model before the next generation Holden Monaco’s from the HQ series in 1972.

    Leyland buses were quite common over here everywhere once....Tigers and even Albion double deckers in Sydney were used.

    A 1990 Holden Nova! Exactly the same as a Corolla. Both were made in Melbourne from mostly Australian parts.

    Some very interesting stuff there! The Daihatsu engine, isn’t that the one out of the early Cuore? That one has been on sale in Europe, don’t know about the UK though. FYI watercooled 2 cylinders you can still find in modern Fiats such as the 500. In most countries only in 875cc turbocharged form but in Holland you could get this in 964cc normally aspirated form, also in the 2012-2018 Panda. That engine has the same sound about it as the Daihatsu! It wasn’t a popular engine though, lots of customers complained about the strange engine note, the turbocharged one can also drink a lot of fuel (IMHO it’s quite good on fuel, and fun to drive, very eager engine). The engine has hydraulically actuated intake valves (yes, really!) via a lost-motion system, probably the most advanced valve actuation system in any production engine.

    The biggest operator of Leyland National buses in Australia was the Canberra bus system followed closely by Hobart.

    The Bus with the doors for every row of seats should have a tremendous comeback in these times of Corona! Putting a plastic foil between every row would be easy and make this bus a safe way of mass transportation, allowing only families on one seat row!
