after the mower has mown the grass, it just covers the field in one flat layer, this tractor goes up and down the field, and the spinning spikes throw the grass into lines so that its easier for grass boxes to just follow the lines to pick up the grass
Close :) First the grass is cut with a mower then so it can dry faster it is spread out with a machine call a tedder. When the hay is dry this machine is used to rake the hay together so the baler can make either round or square bales.

A different tractor has come along and cut the grass, but left it on the ground. If it's left there, it will go bad faster,get blown around by the wind, and it's tough to pick up, so this device rakes the grass into 'windrows' so it stays fresh longer, stays put, and is easier to pick up later, with another tractor. Larger harvester tractors do all three steps plus threshing in one pass, but they're more expensive.

Many thanks for the upload of this fascinating video. I thought I recognised the machinery, and if I remember correctly, it is like a very slow and ground based 'Helicopter mechanism which drives the Grass Sweeping Tines? Still very ingenious though!

It's moving the windrows together so instead of making 5+ passes with a baler you make one, and 2 passes with a tractor(s) total.
piling the clippings into a neat row for the bailing machine to gather it into bails to sit out to dry
this is one fancy hay rake (at least that is what I think it is) to use something like this you must have some very very large fields to use one of these. how many acres can you rake in one day? Now I would love to see the baler at work

You probably watch as I did, fascinated by the machinery, the intricacies of leaving the 'sweepers' horizontal, and using what, if I am correct is a very similar mechanism to that used on Helicopters, in this case the mechanism lefts the tines out of the way and again if I understand it correctly, lift them out of the way as the Tines do not sweep back the grass the front Tines have just pushed into a windrow?
this is a giant swath turner in effect it turns the cut grass to aid the drying of it or the collection if its being made in to silage as apposed to hay or straw

It's a power rake on steroids Lunar... It takes the cut grass and preps it for the hay baler (which is the machine that makes the large bales of grass and makes them easier to transport, and to feed livestock)
Can you ever use the 6 rotor i live in west wales and have used a 4 rotor class rake did'nt think a harvester could take much more than that
