EXACTLY! Ppl tryna deflect by sayin “but Aubrey is black” or “kendricks wife is half white” that ain’t got shit to do with it. When Kendrick says “we don’t wanna hear u say nigga no more” I compare it to a suburban kid with a good up bringing all a sudden trying to involve themselves in street politics… Aubrey stick to making music for women bruh u not tuff like that and that’s ok, but don’t be calling anybody out they names bruh cus u not that guy. We done all heard yo zesty ass in interviews bruh u sound like a lil valley girl, awkward af sayin nigga. Stop it. Money can’t buy u respect in the hood💯 jus be urself and make them love songs nigga. The act is up.

The problem is, we didn’t check Drake for doing weirdo type shxt in the culture earlier. Now he became arguably the biggest rapper ever &We tryna take him down. Should’ve happened earlier if we cared about the core values of hip hop.

@@soulgardentv_I don’t disagree, however I do think that we lack control. It seems that the same reason a bus boycott wouldn’t work in this era is the same reason hip hop has gone astray. We support the culture, but who capitalizes the industry?

The listener doesnt care about yhe cukture and the people who listen to drake arent necessarily hip hop fans. Drake is a massively mainstream artist when people listen to a drake song they dont think “what kind of hip hop is this” the mainstream listener only cares if its a good song

My man said a change is coming but I don’t think he explicitly described the change or what was changing. Is a change coming to hip hop? Is a change coming to pop music? His disdain for Drake seems to cloud his perspective. I agree that a change is coming. The change isn’t happening within either culture. I think hip hop is reclaiming its independence from pop culture. Drake is a lyricist. To say he’s not is hating. But I liken Drake to those suburban kids that have PHDs in hip hop but can never be OF the culture. He is the greatest of those suburban kids. The problem with Drake is his inability to connect with the culture at its roots because he was always visiting. Those of us from the culture can feel it but not many can describe so artistically in the way that Kendrick did. But when he laced those tracks, the CULTURE felt it. And it is going to permeate throughout the hip hop community in a way that I don’t Drake will ever recover. But again, Drake was never Hiphop. He was always a Pop star. He will always do number like Iggy. But I will bet that his passport into the hiphop community has been revoked. I don’t hate Drake but I see the writing on the wall. I’ve never heard of this dude but it’s obvious he’s from the culture. I just wish he would’ve been more unbiased. You can argue the point without trying to defame Drake. Him saying “he gotta do what he gotta do” or whatever he said isn’t even comment worthy. NY Times giving him credit for bringing sing song rap into relevance isn’t credible. NY TIMES DOESNT MATTER BECAUSE THEYRE NOT OF THE CULTURE. But let’s dissect your argument. The culture was never open to Drake singsong style. We accepted Bone Thugs, JaRule (for a minute). But not Drake. It wasn’t the style, it was the authenticity that we rocked with. Pop culture is always late. And most people that get credit in mainstream music aren’t the creators. I would start rattling off artists but I know my point is irrefutable. Drake never suggested he was the author of any style. He’s always been respectful of the culture’s influence on him. His error wasn’t believing that he was bigger than the culture. His error was believing that he was no longer a visitor. He miscalculated Kendrick Lamar’s creative ability to highlight that Drake was an outsider. Kendrick drew a distinct line in the sand that separated pop from hiphop. I think the biggest result of this beef is that those within the culture will take his lead and begin to separate the authentic from the commercial.
    RIP Kai Cenat
    RIP Sexxy Red
    The list goes on…

I agree with almost everything you said, but is Drake really a lyricist? I have seen some of notebooks when he was young but lately all of the ghost riders have been getting exposed, now we know that, Drake did not write Mob Ties. He is definitely an actor, he knows how to copy accents, flows, and rap like other well known or up and coming artists, but a lyricist, Drake gonna have to show me receipts. Every time I think he wrote something, here comes the reference track.

Very astute observation and excellent points you made but I would like to offer another perspective. I’m 46 from the south born in Galveston,Tx ( birth place of Juneteenth) and live in Emancipation Park (park where slaves found out about Juneteenth)in 3rd Ward Houston,Tx. Hip Hop is Black American Culture and Drake is playing both sides of his lineage. There have been non black contributors and I have no problem recognizing that and their contributions. Hip Hop, like many other Black American creations is being watered down or usurped just like with jazz, blues, beat bop, country, rock, funk, disco, r&b , electro , etc. This makes you point about the cultural shift. Kendrick makes a reference that “ OVO ni@@as have no heritage, they come to America “. That line is powerful because many black people from other countries say we have culture or heritage yet they dress like us, talk like us, walk like us, and get their hair cut like us. Kendrick for his diss picked two of the most famous black American soul artist to start both diss with, not a coincidence. This is just one layer but a very important layer in this conversation.

allah u akbar!!! we have another muslim on deck, peace brother... what u just said is exactly what i'm talkin bout, everybody loses their culture when they come to ameriKKKa for the sake of being 1 of us... they lose their accents, they change languages & eat everything we eat... but only when itz convenient, they act like their culture is the best shit ever until they want the world to like em... every other race hates to admit that black ameriKKKan coolness is the coolest type of cool on the planet, they hate that they're not really cool until we say they are... everything we touch changes for the better, and u know itz true becuz they follow suit...

This convo has been ruined when people were talking about hiphop culture as if it is black culture when its just a part of it. Drake is black and has a lot of ties and involvement in black culture but everything that hip hop is he hasn't represented the best the ghostwriting is damning when you're going around saying you the best, when you're canadian but your sound is everything but Canada until reggaeton/dancehall is charting and you can use your ties to West Indian culture in Toronto to legitimise it, same with afrobeats, Uk drill. Be who you are and where you're from thats why Em will always be respected because he owns who he is, Cole is biracial but he always been Fayettville

u simply can't move black culture the way black ppl do, drake doesn't have influence on the culture like that - most colonizers don't... nobody wants to dress like him, nobody wants to talk like him either... ppl like drake's music, but he's not influential like jim jones or jay z... u see what pusha t did to that boy, it shouldn't be that easy to get knocked off (or ur team to throw in the towel - however u wanna look at it)... take busta douglas, he got his ass whooped RIGHT AFTER takin the title... it means he shouldn't have been there in the 1st place, the more drake goes back & forth with real MCs the more he looks like an industry plant... DMX was the 1st person to shit on drake & that boy kept his mouth shut, looks like DMX was right after all cuz even the so-called fans are turnin on drake... i love it, i never liked that cornball either...
