Got my copy at GenCon as well. There were only a few left when I walked up. I immediately grabbed it and started acting like Gollum. "Myyyyyy... Precious" ...
This is both a long time coming AND out of nowhere. I knew it was in the works, but then like 2 weeks ago..."it'll be at GenCon!" What?! Very cool, though. Gaslight is my second favorite time to run Call of Cthulhu after the 20s. I have a bunch of Gaslight material already, but will likely trade up to this. Glad to see it the vision of the game expands beyond England. Definitely excited for a Victorian campaign. And there are some classic scenarios I'd love to see redone.
6:10 £SD might feel a bit complicated, but - with everything in dozens - 240d (& 20s) in £1, certainly made divvying up bills into thirds very much easier. My mam used to tell me about getting a tanner in pocket money, taking half (a thruppenny bit) to the village shop for her weekly comic. There'd be enough left for a bag of Spanish and a ha'pny change (she felt aggrieved if it was just a farthing). Different world! Hoping there'll be a slipcase of these books. Definitely deserves it!
I am very excited about this although Vaesen Mythic Britain and Ireland kind of takes some wind out of those sails as it scratches a very similar itch.
Is this product anything other than a thin skin on the prior" Cthullu by Gaslight" product that we played in the late 1990's? This is a product that already existed by name.
The third edition of Cthulhu by Gaslight, which came out in 2012, was a rewritten and expanded edition of the original Gaslight editions (the boxed set from 1986, which was later republished with relatively minimal changes as a paperback in 1988). This new edition is significantly rewritten and expanded again - so I think it’s safe to say it’s more than a thin skin over the earlier editions.
This got me to pull out my copy of the 1986 Chtulhu by Gaslight boxed set. Now I wonder how the new book(s) compare with it beyond the prettier presentation. Certainly the challenges faced by the LBGTQ+ community in the Victorian Period was not an issue that was being discussed in the gaming culture of the mid-1980s.
From interviews I’ve seen with Mike Mason, one of the areas that will be significantly expanded upon in the new edition/s of Gaslight is the class system - so you could run a campaign with working class or even criminal class investigators, for instance. And yeah, the section on queer life in the 1880s and 1890s, details on etiquette, mourning and more suggest a really expanded game setting. Plus the expanded focus on the British Empire, the US East Coast in the Gaslight era etc is definitely tantalising. I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on a copy!
I'm interested in the setting, but if the two books will run at $110+ in total, I will probably wait. As for the art, some of it is good, but there are some really bland pieces.
It's being pitched as being stand alone but the book only has about 15 pages of the rules basics so I'd actually recommend having the core CofC releases if you're the Keeper. Not to say you couldn't just get by with this in a pinch. ~ Jeff
I'm currently running a group using Hudson & Brand. Such a cool time period.

Woohoo! Thanks for featuring this product on your reviews. What a great opportunity for an early look and loved your interview with Mike Mason!
Thanks again!
Glad to see you’re in great health after Gen Con! Thanks for the page-through!
Thanks for the flip-thru - been waiting for this book for a while so excited to see it!
I had a copy of this in the 80's, as well as Cthulhu Now.

I certainly agree with you about the art and will be mentioning that in my review, ~ Jeff
I may have missed it. Do you need the Base CoC RPG to run this, or is it a separate game?

Imposing modern labels on to the past.
While stuff like that was a thing back then, it does stick out.
