I’m bereft. What a true gentleman. I only met this delightful man once, but he made such an impact on me. I do believe I fell a little bit in love! An unforgettable man, a great loss
Trevor, what a great tribute to a great man. I only met him twice, he was a gentleman and spoke to me for more than 10 minutes. I felt guilty for taking him away from his business, but he was kind and told me do not worry. He loved talking to customers.
What I remember: Mr. John Mullaney personally sold me two wool vests and two wool coats designed by Donegal Studio with their fabric woven in the homes of the Irish and the cloth turned into authentic period garments in The Glebe Mill, Lower Main St, New Church Glebe, Kilcar, Co. Donegal . One was a doctors coat with roll up sleeves for delivering precious Irish babies in the midst of winter. The other was a fisherman's coat with no buttons to prevent the buttons snagging on the fishermen nets. Big fluffy merino wool Sweaters with a unique weave to identify a drowned fishermen. . To this day not even Bijan on Rodeo drive has ever made me feel the full force/magic of a quality haberdashery. When I would fly up from Dublin Ireland to Sligo to buy clothes. Three generations of Mullaney's family would walk with me through their shop and offer their wears. 9 O'Connell Street, Sligo, Co. Sligo. R.I.P
Had the pleasure of wandering into Mullaney Bros in 2018 and being attended to by Mr. Mullaney. He guided me to the perfect flat cap and suggested where I could find more info on my grandfather’s home. A true gentleman.
Great tribute to a wonderful gentleman. I chatted with him for a while when we were there on June 29th, 2022. My family left Sligo in 1973, but he remembered my father, and we had a good chat about Sligo back in the old days.
Whenever I stepped into Mullaneys, John appeared and thus began a long and marvellous conversation of otherworldly proportions…he will remain in the hearts of many.
We visited Mullaney's on our trip to Sligo two summers ago. Walking into shops like that can't help but make you stand taller & feel better. It goes without saying that the team were brilliant. 👏
Well missed. I felt at home every time i traveled back to Sligo, and was fortunate enough to meet him when there. And he’d not only remember me but also remember what we spoke about many years prior. What an incredible and rare gentleman.
Such an honourable man polite, charming and a friend too all What hes talking about is correct. We will miss you and heaven gained a lovely angel RiP My Friend......
Great tribute to a true Irish gentleman. I had the pleasure of many long encounters and conversations with John at his shop and he was the finest of gentleman. RIP you legend.
A true gentleman is an under statement. Always enjoyed his insightful conversations. Introduced him to my son in later years who always truly respected and enjoyed John as an outstanding professional. Sad to see him leave O' Connell Street.
Great piece of work Trevor, loved it. My grandfather Francis Keane had the agency for the White Star line in his shop in Wine street from the mid 1800's and up to the early 1900's. But alas his book is long gone.
My great-grandfather was the contractor and I am so proud that to have that connection to this institution. As a kid my brother's and I walked through Mullaneys and Johnston's and Lyons like they were our version of Disneyland
What a true gentleman. So sublimely eloquent .
Beautiful tribute to a great gentleman,Sligo will never see his like again.rest in peace John Mullaney

He was a very refined gentleman, and so was his brother Tom. May God bless you both.

Yes, I can see how walking through those stores as a kid must've been like walking in Disneyland. And Woolworth's too. Thanks for your comment.
