The town should buy it as a co-op. Th store would have a better position with the vendors, reduce shipping &bringing in small cube van loads by paid store driver Begin to use local school teens in store for work credits and pay
I was just saying that! I belong to a co-op grocery, and while we don't have to work, a $200 buy-in was required, if everyone in town pitched in either little time or money, they'd save their grocery.
I grew up in my uncle's independent grocery store. He was the last of 13 in our town until the chains came in. It is hard for independent stores to find suppliers. The wholesale warehouses for the independents have disappeared. I love Silverton. I was last there in 1983 and I have a tremendous respect for their history.
And that very pattern coupled, with history, is why we need antitrust policy to break up the big chains; so that the small independents can thrive again. It was that policy, that protected them to begin with.

Great people, store and story! Thank goodness for people who care about their townspeople as they do, and I'm sure that the townspeople feel the same towards them. I so hope that things will work out for them and that someday soon, there will be a couple who will take their place and keep the store/town as their own new home. ❤️
Reminds me of similar problems facing remote stores in the Scottish highlands and islands. Community ownership has been a lifesaver for some of them - and in some English villages. We visited Silverton a couple months ago, from the Isle of Man - definitely the town we liked the most during our Colorado road trip. Wish we'd found the store ...
I was just reflecting on my time in Silverton in 1976. I used to frequent a little store operated by a Hispanic lady and her daughter. They were always so kind and easy to engage in conversation. I miss them mightily for having known them a shprt time. All the folks of Silverton are neighbors to visitors.
All factors considered, I think I would take on a partner who wants to run it and gradually gain more of the interest over time. That would give these guys a way out of the full time responsibility while providing an opportunity for someone who wants to be a member of the community with this type of business for the long term.
What an amazing story! We lost our last local grocery store ten plus years ago. Now, only chain stores. It was always nice to be able to pick up a fresh meal for lunch. There, it was waiting in the fridge with my name on the package. I was Tom's last customer, sure miss Sullivan's!
I am a retired 61 yr old Tennessean. Former EMT/FF for over 30 years. I am a country raised guy. I would come there and work at that store and live in that community ! Wish they had a job opening and a place to stay. Lord bless that place and those people.
If I was a bit younger I’d move heaven and earth to try and buy that place. What an opportunity to have a great life. Hard work obviously- but I’ve never been afraid of that. Family and community are where it’s most important!!! These people are wonderful and I understand how hard it is to keep working as hard as you did when you were in your 20’s but they won’t sell to just anyone and that makes them even more special!! I must visit there someday!
If you have one of these stores in your community and you love it... Do as much shopping as you can there. Don't give your hard earned money to these corporate monsters. Keep your money in your community.
If I hit the lottery I would buy that store and retire in heaven with something to do work in that cool grocery store my dream is to retire in Trinidad Colorado but that's close enough 😂😂
Nice story. They won't be able to hold out forever as time remains undefeated. Hopefully someone comes along who has old-world values to take it over...
