      Hi!! No worries girl, I love answering questions and I had a lot when I was planning on living in Goldcrest too.
      1. No I didn't take it, even though I should have. It didn't seem to line up with when I had class and was often pretty full (at least when I saw it). I had my own bike and typically rode that instead so it didn't seem necessary. One of my roommates did take it though and she seemed to find it convenient!
      2. I always walked or biked home actually, since it's pretty safe in terms of crime at night (in comparison to where I live in the US). When I go out, I don't drink too much for my health so that plays a part in my choice! Since I grew up in a place where it's not safe, I was always on alert while walking alone at night, but I never ran into any problems at all, and felt comfortable after being there for a month or so. From what I understand, most of the bad things that happen at night tend to be people drowning from stumbling into the water while drunk. So for those who are really drunk, it's probably best to take an uber/mytaxi, or walk with a group of people. But in general, you wouldn't have much trouble getting back safely, especially since the university grounds are pretty well lit at night.
      3. Yes there were a few for me personally, though it's pretty subjective! I didn't like not being able to bring my friends in past 9/10pm at the discretion of the security. It was like living in the dorms again when I don't have freedom to let my friends come and go as I please. I feel like the price of Goldcrest doesn't justify that rule. I also found it annoying that I had to call security a few times to open the gates for me to enter w my bike because there is no way to get inside with anything bigger than your body after dark without calling them. There was also a rule saying that if you didn't keep your room clean throughout your stay, they could charge you money. I understand why that'd be a problem at the end of the stay (if the room is trashed) but to charge people for being untidy while they're staying there seems a bit excessive and just a money grab. When we had a random check, they tried to insist that we stole a chair from the dining table which was really stupid but they didn't pursue it past that day. They did end up taking money out of our deposit because some of the roommates left their bedding in their rooms. They find many many many ways to charge more money, but it can be avoided in some ways. They aren't very quick with dealing with problems, though they are fast in responding if you get locked out of your room. Happened to me once and they came in 10 minutes tops.

      4. Yes, there are communal areas near the reception desk and a 5 minute walk away where theres a little shop and dining area. near the reception desk that's part of goldcrest, there's a pretty big area that has these really cute and funky chairs, and they have a TV and a bunch of board games. I didn't spend very much time there, but it's pretty quiet usually so it's a nice place to study if you need a change of scenery.
      5. The facilities are a laundry area next to security and the main gate, a bike storage area (one section has a ping pong table) with keycard access, the reception area, and that's pretty much it. Theres a big courtyard with seating. The shop and cafe-like space is a short walk away and I believe there is a large tennis court that can be reserved for a small fee. There's a lovely path you can follow behind Corrib that goes along the water towards the sports building.
      6. Yes you do have to pay, which is kinda annoying considering the cost of living there. From what I remember, it's about 3 euro for washing and drying but I can't remember for sure. It might be a bit more than that. There aren't any washing products provided, so you'll have to bring your own. I believe they sell some in the shop but it's probably more expensive that at a regular store. Luckily though, they provide regular cleaning supplies like a vaccuum and broom for the apartment. I think I had to buy my own cleaning spray though.
      7. Not particularly noisy at night honestly but it would depend. Obviously Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays were noisiest nights, but even then it was rarely a disturbing amount very late. One time I remember waking up to people playing really loud music at like 2am but it didn't last long.
      8. Yes I did drink the tap water! I don't think I even used a water filter but for some reason I can't recall. If you'd like to be safe, I'm sure you could buy the typically filtered water pitcher but you shouldn't have to buy bottled water.
      9. No, I never felt truly unsafe on or off the complex grounds. Like I said in an earlier question, I live in an area where you have to be on alert to a certain degree, especially being a young woman. of course there were many times at night where i was always checking behind me and being wary when passing others walking alone. It's always a good idea to have a plan of defense. I always had my location turned on that I shared with both of my parents and my boyfriend, even though they were a whole ocean away. In my mind, if anything happened to me, they'd at least have my phone location. I also wore a fitbit that could probably be easily tracked. Especially in town, there are a lot of people out and about at night, so I'd say it's comfortable. Being on campus at night is the creepiest part of the walk because of how big it seems when it's empty, but like I said before, it's well lit and not too bad. Once you hit the gates of Corrib, there's security usually waiting there and if you desperately needed help, they'd most likely hear your call. So yeah I felt pretty safe overall, with the possibilities of danger in mind.
      10. For my apartment, we pretty much took turns buying that stuff, though I don't remember being the person who spent much on any of it. I pretty much kept the apartment clean by myself (nothing against them, I just preferred it clean because there were some roommates who had habits that were difficult to live with) so other people bought that stuff. BUT I found a SUPER CUTE elephant dish brush that I bought from Flying Tiger Copenhagen which was definitely my favorite shop at the mall. Amazing. But yeah I believe I just bought that and a regular dish towel for drying but everyone else pitched in for soap. I would definitely recommend getting everyone together to discuss those expectations, because we failed to do that and it ended up being kinda annoying throughout our stay. I don't even know why we didn't talk about it, but it be like that sometimes!
      11. The majority of our meals were eaten and cooked alone (at least when in the apartment- not including eating out). We all ate together as an apartment only once because our schedules didn't match at all. I think it would've been really sweet to cook a meal with everyone, but it just didn't work out that way! I was particularly close with one of my roommates who by chance would be in the kitchen at the same time as I was, so we would eat at the same time but still would take care of our own food. I was trying to save money by cooking at the apartment as much as possible, so I ended up eating with my roommates quite a few times. The food in Galway is absolutelyyy delicious at restaurants, and it's definitely worth the price.
      For meal tips/advice, I'd just say buy some tupperware/plastic food containers to take food out of the apartment and sit outside somewhere because the scenery is so nice and there aren't many bugs. Buy a picnic blanket or use one of your own too! It'll be worth it when the weather is nice. Eat out as much as you can afford because the food is so worth it, but cook at home as much as you can otherwise because it's still fun to try new recipes. For me, the food at the grocery stores tastes different than it does in the US, so it was still fun to eat at the apartment.
      12. Yes you can receive mail in your name, and it would be stored in your mail slot near the reception desk. They only put letters in the slot and keep boxes in a locked cabinet that you'll have to ask them for. They email you when you've received a package, and sometimes when you have a letter.
      *just for an extra tip, when you arrive, there is literally nothing in the bedroom for you. No toilet paper, no sheets, and possibly not a pillow (I had one but my roommate didn't get one). So you'll have to do a run to the mall (I suggest Penneys for the sheets and duvet and Aldi for cheap groceries) right away. I wouldn't suggest walking cause you'll have a lot of bags!
      If you have anymore questions or want to talk about your plans for travel around Ireland, you can DM me and we can chat there as well!:)

    Hi Elise, thank you for the video on Goldcrest, and answering all the queries which helped me get answers to many queries I had in mind.
    My son is joining NUI and will be staying at Goldcrest.
    1) Would you kindly let me know, how far are supermarkets like Aldi, Tescos from Goldcrest? Are ubers/ taxis easily available or bus service ( frequency)? Which is the closest one? Do they deliver if booked online?
    2) Do they have shuttle service from Goldcrest to the Science bldg on campus as you say it is a 15min walk?
    3) Any idea ( in general) i mean, do each student prepare their own meal or they cook together?

    • @elisems2023
      @elisems2023  2 роки тому

      Hi! I'm so glad the video & comments have helped.
      1. I bought a bike with a basket to make grocery shopping more convenient as the Aldi that I went to (at the shopping centre) was about 20-25 minutes away walking. The bike ride was only about 10 or less. There is a little shop around the corner basically, but it was really expensive with a small selection. There aren't many grocery stores. But yes ubers and taxis are easily accessed. There is a nearby bus stop, and I believe you can either pay with cash or sign up through NUIG for a bus pass called the Leap card. I'm not sure if Tesco or aldi deliver but it's definitely possible! Since I'm not in Ireland right now, I can't check.
      2. Yes they do have a shuttle bus and if I remember correctly, there is a stop almost right outside the building. There may be a map available on their website!
      3. Personally, I cooked for myself either alone in the kitchen or with my roommates around so we could chat but we never really cooked with or for eachother. My roommates and I didn't have much time to spend with eachother due to clashing schedules. I did make them potato chips once though:') but it's really dependant on the people he's living with, maybe they'll enjoy group meals more often!
      Hope that helps a bit and good luck to your son! It's an amazing school and campus, I miss it everyday.
      Have a great night/day:)

      Hi! I thought the walk was quite nice even when the weather was poor as there are short times where you’ll be covered by buildings, trees, and a bridge. I personally bought a bike to ensure I got to class on time (I usually leave late :’) ) but my roommates would walk everyday and didn’t seem to have an issue with it. The view of the water from the path is really lovely and there’s a path through the woods next to the water you can take if you have extra time!

      Hi!! I hope you have as good of an experience as I did, I had the time of my life! So in goldcrest I'm pretty sure each bedroom only accommodates 1 person but each apartment fits either 5 or 6 people. You get your own bathroom and bedroom but everything else is shared. In corrib though, there is a twin bedroom option that fits 2 people, but it's similar to goldcrest in that there are multiple bedrooms in each apartment. Corrib also has shared bathroom instead of en suite.
      I'm not sure about demographics so you could ask, but I was in an apartment in goldcrest with all international students. So I'm not sure if goldcrest in general has more international students. You could email corribstudents@campusliving.ie if you'd like!

    • @elisems2023
      @elisems2023  4 роки тому +1

      Hi!! So there is the living room/kitchen that includes a couch, a table for dining, and a standard kitchen, oven w stove top, sink, and multiple cabinets. There's also a tall closet that has cleaning supplies like brooms and a vacuum. Then obviously there's the hallway but that's it for communal space! Everything else (just your bedroom) can only be accessed by your ID so it's private. There you have your bed, closet space, and your own bathroom. So no mini fridges are provided for your bedroom, and im not sure if there are any rules against it (i assume not, but definitely double check!). For the apartment roommates I had, we didn't have many issues separating our sections of the fridge though we did have an issue of someone using someone else's milk so you may want to label your stuff or have your own mini fridge in your room if you prefer:) overall the place is pretty spacious for 6 people, and we were all able to comfortably hang out in the common space

    Hi, I am thinking of going to college here. I am not from Galway I’m from Leinster and I am not familiar with the city/college etc. If the residence is on campus how come it is a 15 minute walk? And why is the bedroom deprecate from the kitchen/sitting room, with they I mean why is it across the hall?

    • @elisems2023
      @elisems2023  5 років тому +3

      Hi! It’s a 15 minute walk because the campus is really long. Goldcrest is centered in the other campus apartments Corrib Village, so that’s an extra 5 minute walk to get out, if even that long. Then there is a bit through a parking lot until you reach the mid campus/ north campus of the engineering and business buildings. If you take only these classes, it’s a great spot! But there are still engineering classes in the arts and science building I believe, which takes the 15-20 minutes. You’ll walk under a highway and through a nice lawn area to get there. Aras Na Maclain (i think that’s how it’s spelt) is one of the furthest buildings from Goldcrest, but it’s still not too bad of a walk. And they are separate because it’s shared with 5 other people. This allows for more cooking space, and a nice common area for everyone to hang out! Also, I imagine it’d be worlds more expensive to have a separate kitchen/kitchenette in each bedroom. I greatly enjoyed studying abroad at NUIG, and I hope you have a great time there too!

The teachers were kind, but I didn't have a very close relationship with any of them since I only stayed a semester and had huge class sizes. Hi! I’m currently applying for accommodation here, but I’m torn whether to pick Corrib or goldcrest😩 What are the pros/cons of both and the differences if any? I’d be applying for a room with a single/double bed and an ensuite, so which village is better in your opinion? My course is arts so distance wise, from which village would be nearest? I’m sorry about all the questions, just want to make the right choice 💕

    • @elisems2023
      @elisems2023  4 роки тому +2

      Hi! So I never got to see the inside of the buildings/ rooms in Corrib village, but I can definitely say they have more freedom to come and go as they please and there is no time limit for friends staying over. The most frustrating thing about goldcrest is that they close all of the gates around the building at around 9PM sometimes, maybe 10pm. After that point, the security guards have the freedom to just deny your friends from entering. I complained to the offices because I had an issue with a rude guard. I believe Corrib village may not have that issue as I'd entered through those gates freely to find that goldcrest was already in lock down. Not a fun time being an international student and wanting friends over. However, Goldcrest is naturally safer with an indoor place to lock your bike up (corrib only has outdoor I believe), gates all around, and a conveniently close front desk/lobby area if you ever get locked out. That closes at 9PM though. Distance is pretty much the same, but there are corrib buildings that are technically closer to the street. It's about 3-4 minute difference between that building and goldcrest if even that much. So you'll be having a nice scenic walk to the arts buildings regardless. The closest buildings are the engineering and business buildings. I would definitely recommend getting a bike! Overall I think I would have better enjoyed corrib village for housing though goldcrest was nice and comfortable. I just hated the strict rules but I'm not entirely sure if corrib is more lax. If you like a more chill, relaxed housing that may not be as well managed, Corrib should be fine! But if you like a sleek/ fancy housing that's kept up with & you don't mind having your friends not come over past 10/11pm, Goldcrest may suit you better! Hope that helps & you have a lovely time! :)

      @@erinmccormack1469 I never lived on campus, but goldcrest is kind of the pretty new place for the internationals and the ones with bigger wallets, corrib village is full of first years, so if you are a first year and want to party, go for it. Accommodation in town is expensive, slightly more so than corrib village but we'll see what happens after the covid 19 stuff is over(more air b&b flats available for "real people" who actually live there)
      Overall Galway is expensive anywhere you look and the student accommodation is either middlish cheap and kind of ok, except for dunaras, or expensive(goldcrest) and new, so not completely worn down

    • @elisems2023

      Vijay Choudhary Hi! There are benefits to both, so it depends on what your personal preferences are. I think if you enjoy walks or bike rides, you’re in the business or engineering classes (the campus accom. Are closest to those 2 buildings) or you just like the area then the campus accommodation is best. On the other hand, if you like staying out late to drink or travel, enjoy being closer to the exciting things downtown during the day and like having a place to relax at in the middle of your plans, or dislike long walks, then a place off campus and in the downtown area would be best. Personally I don’t see a difference between campus accommodation and getting a place that’s not in the central city area, as it’s about the same distance from the school. I think if I could do it all over, I would stay in a place in the central area instead, even though I enjoyed the place I stayed on campus enough

      @@LazyCat404 hey sorry for the super late response! Housing in Galway can get pretty expensive no matter where you choose since they're having a bit of a housing problem. I'd say €500-700 a month is pretty standard but truthfully I'm not entirely familiar with the situation so I cant say for sure. I would say Goldcrest is one of the more expensive options but I'm not sure it's much different elsewhere, and it's a nice space!

    Hi I've actually applied for gold crest accommodation but currently waitlisted. waiting for CAO rounds. Is this a double bedroom or single? And can you tell me the scenario if someone is visiting me for a while can they stay with us or no?

    • @elisems2023
      @elisems2023  5 років тому +1

      Eisha Beley Hello! This is a double bedroom if I remember correctly. I believe that Goldcrest only has 1 person rooms with a single bed or double bed, so that’d mean I was in a double bedroom! Corrib village on the other hand has 2 person rooms I think. If you have someone visiting, they aren’t allowed to stay longer than 3/4 nights consecutively but you could find a nice Airbnb for one night then stay another 3/4 nights. I was confused about this while I was living there, but I was under the impression that it wasn’t allowed for more than one visitor to stay in the entire apartment as in if you have a visitor staying overnight (only one is allowed per person), then your roommates can’t have someone stay overnight. I’m not sure if that is totally accurate but I do know for sure that there is a limited amount of visitors allowed on the premises at once so if you know the days they are visiting, you should fill out the overnight visitor form online or at the front desk as soon as you can! They sometimes make mistakes regarding overnight stays so if you have any questions or they deny the request, make sure you email them or visit the front desk. Visitors who aren’t staying overnight have to leave the grounds by 11pm. One night guard gave me trouble about bringing in friends after 8pm (an incredibly frustrating experience) so if it’s before 9pm, you can walk through the reception area and you’ll just have to wave at the guard who watches the cameras at night to open the gate for your friends when they leave. I didn’t try to sneak anyone in without a request but I’m sure it could be done in a desperate situation. I don’t mean jumping the fences or anything, but I don’t think that they would necessarily know if someone stayed overnight without approval as long as they entered when the gates were open and then y’all didn’t leave until the next morning. I wouldn’t risk it since they like to charge fees for anything and everything. The visiting process is a bit much in my opinion, which is something I regret about living in Goldcrest as a study abroad student, but it’s difficult in general to find accommodation that doesn’t have rules about overnight stays. Hope that helps :)

      Hey! It didn’t appear to me that that was the case, especially since all of the people I lived with were almost all 3rd years. It’s likely that it’s just a lot of underclassman and they might think someone in postgrad would want to be with other postgrads too? I feel like that just depends on what you prefer for your environment & Goldcrest was pretty relaxed anyways:) but if you like nightlife, I’d definitely recommend living closer to the city center! Hi! Yes alcohol is definitely allowed (so long as you’re 18+ of course haha). They don’t really monitor what you bring in or out. You can be as drunk as you’d like as long as you’re able to make it to the gate 😂 one of my roommates came back one night and seemed drunk enough that a night guard walked him up to our apartment and to his room door. I don’t think he even was drunk, but I guess it’s nice that they care! Basically you have the freedom to do what you’d like regarding alcohol, as long as you aren’t causing the building damage or throwing up all over their property:)

      Hi! Yes, it's ok to come in at any time as long as you are coming in alone. The front gate has a turnstile entrance that you need your ID to get through. I've seen people sneak in two at once, but it's not easy, and they usually have security sitting in a nearby area after 9PM, so that makes things more difficult in that sense. If you appear to be really drunk and struggling, sometimes a guard will walk you to your room! But yeah you're free to come and go as you please:)
