  • NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (United Artists 821) Recorded at Bell Sound Studios in New York City in January 1965, this is the first of a two single deal with United Artists Records for then twenty-three year old, Martine Dalton. 'Sad Song' b/w/ 'Tender Words' issued in February 1965 was produced by Jack Gold with Herb Bernstein providing the arrangement. Composed by Tash Howard and Murray Kenton, the A-side was shorted from its original title of 'I Sing a Sad Song' and although not a hit at the time of release, it truly is a slick and classy uptown pop record that deserved a better fate than languishing in obscurity. The passing of time has given original copies of the disc the category of 'collectible' and rightly so. Miss Dalton, who was married to record promoter, Mike Abbot, had only eight known singles in the 1960's with one of those being a duet with Bennie Bunn. She was also one of the first African American females hired to sing television commercials and jingles according to her niece who is also named Martine Dalton.

Very nice. Has elements of a Dionne Warwick/Bacharach record. Perhaps if the bridge was a bit “bigger”sounding or if something was done to differentiate the song structure (dynamics),this could’ve been a hit

I wonder if producer Jack Gold is the same exec who manned the studio for Johnny Mathis later on

Tash Howard was the man behind the Peels of "Juanita Banana" fame.
