Thank you Sophie, for this informative video. Now I know how to train my cockatiel "Apu" to have a shower or bath. I have him now for 4 weeks and he is already eating out of hand and flying all over the place.
Pretty sure Buddy's previous owner's mom was using a spray bottle to punish him. The first time I brought a spray bottle into the room he straight up freaked out big time. I had to slowly start with the bottle just outside the room, and slowly move it into the room. That took me a week or so. After that the second he heard that noise a spray bottle makes he freaked out again. I had to slowly work on getting him over that as well. Took another week. Then it was to actual water making contact. He hated when I sprayed to close, so instead I sprayed about 4 feet over his head and let the mist just slowly come down over him, giving him a treat for when he stayed where he was. That was about 2 weeks of working on that. Then one day he gave me a full bathing response (all be it very short). The next time I tried this I was able to video tape it, he keep ruffling and preening, I kept on spraying. ua-cam.com/video/jFucKFwUi-M/v-deo.html My budgies I bought them a water fountain. Cause I know budgies love to self bathe in moving water when ever they want to. I wanted to go with the best option that would also keep fresher water circulating, instead of just stagnant water in a dish. Now I have 2 water fountains. I got a much larger one to see if the cockatiels would use it, but so far everyone just drinks from that one, might be to big lol. I should try adding a rock to the middle maybe. Give them something to perch from. Here is Sky in the first fountain I bought, almost all of my budgies still like to use this one - ua-cam.com/video/6REjtWifoVo/v-deo.html When I do spray the cockatiels down, some of the budgies also get in on the action. It is pretty funny to watch. Then they lick all the droplets off the top of the cage bars. Like they don't have 4 different water sources open to them all day!
It’s sad that some people try and use spray bottles as punishment- it’s just mean! A rock sounds like a good idea! That’s that’s so funny! I love seeing birds that are so into their baths and showers! Scampi and Olive can’t get enough of the kitchen tap 😂
Your videos are super helpful! I’m getting my first tiel in a few weeks so I’m watching as many videos as I can to prepare for my future best friend :]
I don't bathe my birds, they choose where and when to bathe themselves! :p Usually I put out a water dish for them to use, but I can tell if they want it when they start trying to climb into the sink when I'm washing dishes. Then I'm like "hold onnnnnn"! You're right though, my conures want to bathe every day, as long as it's morning or mid-day. They won't in the evening for some reason.
@@BirdNerdSophie yeah, they're pretty good at demanding things! When I've finished washing their dishes and wiped them dry to put food in, one of them often gets tossed off the counter by a bird that wants food and can't wait. It's such a loud clang and definitely makes me fill them fast to avoid it lol
When I do use a misting bottle for my Quaker, it is super fine mist, and I basically spray the air near her then while perched on my hand gently waft her through the mist to start, then she really is ready for a good misting. This mist however is not enough to get through to her skin, so I also provide a shallow bowl of water in her cage. And about twice a week have her shower with me, on her elevated shower perch, covered with elastic so she won’t slip. I allow the water to just bounce off the walls near her, not on her. Then I hold my hand over her head and allow the water to lightly rain down over her. But if she’s not into it, I just let her enjoy the humidity of the water.
@@BirdNerdSophie Ivy has actually prompted me to offer her different ways. Her first baths when we got her home was water on top of a leaf of Romaine lettuce in a large place plate. She was 5 months old and I think before we got her she only bathed in her water dish, poor baby! She decides which way to bathe. I just ordered her one of those automated childs’ sink toys. I think she will like it!
I got a cat fountain, a mister, and offer them shallow bowls with greens. And I got one of those shower attachments for the wall. They have zero interest in any of that. But my birds love taking a dip in their water bowls now and then. So I no longer fill their water up all the way just in case, because I have heard that birds can drown by swimming in their water bowls I will try the reinforcement with the spray mist bottle that suggested
It depends how big the bowls are - I use 150ml ones which they definitely wouldn't get in to trouble with, but deeper ones would definitely be an issue!
I dont bath them I keep a Big Bowl kind thing So they can Bath whenever they want!! Btw My cockatails hate to bath...But they bath once in 2-3 weeks!! My budgies bath once every week they like it!!!!💜💚
@@BirdNerdSophie I tried the spray bottle once but its worse They Hate it so much!!! Whenever they see me even with my water bottle they run away lol..So i font use it!! I do not want em to be scared of every bottle they see!!♡
What do you recommend to use for cleaning their bathing area? My husband has a friend from high-school who's bird just layed eggs. We plan on adding one of these precious babies to our family so we are preparing and learning before our little feathered baby arrives.

@@zalikafox2443 oh ok, then maybe u can try the tips in the vid. Or u can trick it to bathing like u get a leafy green or something and soak it then he might go on it Or u can train him to bathe

Great video Sophie.👏 Our three only bath in camomile tea and wet lettuce. Hope they will get used to the fountain we bought last year. 🙄
Thank you! That’s so funny, they can be really fussy! Have you tried wet lettuce in the fountain?!
@@BirdNerdSophie Yes, and ruined one filter with millet🤣. We're hoping for a hot summer. This might be a better condition for voluntary bathes😉.

We use F10 to clean everything and normal dish soap on any bowls 😊

That’s so cute! If my conure Olive wants to go to the tap, she slams her water bowl 😂
How do I dry my cockatiels during winter season as there is no sun outside? Will he not catch a cold?
Keep your home warm enough for them to air dry naturally 😊
Also a UV light is optimal for a birds health generally, and it dries them very quickly.
I'm down a PetTube rabbit hole... this is crazy
Haha thanks for stopping by 😊
