This is my favorite interview with Branford Marsalis. Very down-to-earth, clear explanations, and wonderful advice that should speak to all generations. Thank you to everyone involved.
This person, ahhhhhhhh young man. Who is not really that young. I say what I said because I am much older than him,Branford. Anyway this cat is really wise beyond his years of life. And man I digg his conversation as much as his ability 2 play the sax/music.4 me as a fan, he delivers most of the time. Respect !! ❤
At 8 minutes in, he makes a great point -- that you should listen to as many styles as you possibly can, even things far from "your interests." And I've seen him live it. Too long to explain here, but I was working for Branford over a few years and during this time, he was the band leader for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. And one night, the Tonight Show's musical guest was country superstar Garth Brooks. And I noticed that while Garth Brooks was singing, every member of the band, other than Branford, was doing their own thing. They weren't being disrespectful, they were quiet, but they weren't focused. Branford, on the other hand, was focused like a laser. I saw it in his eyes. I asked him about it later, he made the same point. He is ALWAYS absorbing everything he can learn, even when you might expect he wouldn't.
I first learned of Branford when he played on Sting’s album in the 80’s. I’d follow along with his sax part the entire song no matter which track. I was an instant fan. I’m also from Richmond, Va. His father used to teach music at our college in town, Virginia 10:13 Commonwealth University.
Loved the short, obscure piece you played at the beginning, Branford. How many folk would know that it was the Kissing Bug', popular in the war? I recall hearing it, decades ago, on the radio,, with Duke Ellington and the vocal by that talented singer Joya Sherrill! That must've been the original wartime recording, I'd hazard!
Love this guy. Fantastic musician first. Branford has always been a simple Man. Even though he s way up there in his career. I admire him! Peace Brandon From Canada Ont. mario
I’m here because Rashawn Ross (trumpet player for Dave Matthews Band) said that the late Leroi Moore (sax player for DMB) drew rock influence from Branford on Sting’s “...Nothing Like the Sun” record. Branford is a true gift.
Very, very funny that incident in France when Branford kept telling that French couple that "he was a battery" instead of saying "he wanted a battery" in correct French. Sometimes life lessons are really a school of hard knocks. Undoubtedly one of the most brilliant saxophonist of modern day jazz.
First heard Bran with the d34d. Then I heard Wynton. Then ELLIS and the great Ray Brown, Heart of Gold. Surrey with the fringe on top. Absolute Fire. #royalgardenblues #inthecrease
Great interview ! Nice quality and well produced video too ! It’s always fun watching a Branford interview . If we could only get more music anecdotes out of him 😀. A lot of Jazz history he has personally experienced ! Write a book already Branford !! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I had the pleasure of meeting you Sir at the New Orleans Airport did not know which brother you were but knew you were a Marsalis , approached and you ushered me to have a seat and spoke with me like you knew me for years I can see why now . Thank U for that , I'll never forget you taking the time.
Over the years I’ve enjoyed watching interviews of Branford, but never have I ever seen so much love in his eyes while answering questions. You can tell that he adores his nephew very much. Thank you Branford for always keepin it real. Great work James!
important for what.? He is a token player with nothing unique. There are a 1000 better players in England alone. Never mind the music he plays, he never could have written. embarrassinbg
The nice thing about this is Branford's warm personality coming through. I knew him 40+ years ago at Berklee, and he's still the same funny and warm person I knew then.
I want to offer condolences for the memory of your great Father .i heard a little of what you and your brothers performed on .c .n N I hope we have the chance to hear the whole composition
Just realised who Branford Marsalis is , yeah I now recognise him, it's really Forrest Wimbledon. Brilliant, Wimbledon is a great player, respect, and wise words, best regards.
Nah... There were girls that liked you on the saxophone. Not just guitarists & singers - but they were just like Branford... Too shy. Probably a couple of girls that went home, asked their dad for a saxophone, but their dads said "no" So they ended up going to the prom with.... A clarinet player. 😆
Branford is just not a likeable guy. I buy his music. I'm a fan. But hearing him offer up a story about the mix up in the french convenient store seems insincere. That's can't be in his top 100 interesting stories. He just doesn't really want to do more than music for people. He just wants to make great music and not be a "celebrity".
Man, I could listen to this guy explain life and music all day long. Excellent interview.
"Music is not about music...it's about people". Wisdom!

This was so damn good!!! Man I love me some Branford Marsalis. God bless, what an awesome human being 👍🙏
" music is about people" wow.. heart to heart .. branford, you are awesome!!!
Music is about people! Man that was extremely simple and profound. 🙏🏿

My experience was meeting Branford… what a beautiful person…also, an amazing musical artist.
I’m here because Rashawn Ross (trumpet player for Dave Matthews Band) said that the late Leroi Moore (sax player for DMB) drew rock influence from Branford on Sting’s “...Nothing Like the Sun” record. Branford is a true gift.
This was fantastic. Good job and thank you for sharing it.
Fantastic interview. Branford has always been down to earth. Great guy

a man in touch with the world. Just fabulous
I love your humility James, but you did a great job. And Branford is a gent.
He’s a real one
he is an angry man.
Short and very very sweet. Thanks.

Late to the game here but let me say this is one of the BEST interviews……
Love it, love the Wyntons
The Marsalis. yes. When parents set an example and a standard for their kids, you have the Marsalis.
thank goodness for the girls

thanks for sharing, Branford Marsalis shares some good stories and thoughts, the Miles "test" is funny, good humour

He's wearing a Safaricom Jazz Festival T-Shirt!!! Shoutout to Kenya!!!
Great video and it's always utterly interesting listening to this man. Thanks!
"...this piano player named Herbie Hancock". Never heard of him.
Look him up. If you’re familiar with Miles Davis, he played in his band back in the 60’s. Very well known piano player. Who have you heard of in Jazz?
Superhuman Fitness I appreciate your kindness very much! I was making a joke about it, because of the way Branford said “this piano player...”.
Well Done. We all start somewhere, and I would have never guessed this was done by someone inexperienced! Keep up the great work!
Awesome vibrant tenor sound 😎
Special thanks to Branford indeed. One of the most important musicians of all time.

Much of that applies to other professions. Great interview!
This is great!

Very nicely done! Congratulations on getting the interview. I’m sure you all learned something from this project.
Love Branford. Just love that guy.
hey James awesome job - this had a vibe - a great combo of video and Branford - I know this was a while ago but respect

Pretty house. Good interview.
How did he learn this. Mind blown.
Brilliant. I love it. Thank you for this! ❤️
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
God bless Uganda. What a shame about your embarrassing judge on the court judging the war crimes of Israel.
A learning curve is not incompetence. He understood.
Very good advice Mr Marsalis! 100% agree with everything you said! :)
That intro theme is SOOOO Rollins!!!!
I love how he thinks if they don’t see him, it’s not stalking :)

Thanks God his father bought him a saxophone 👍🏻
Legend. Period.
He really understands the connection between music and life.
yeh, whats he written? Exactly
Well done James - great work.

When he starts talking about VSOP.. baller 😎
Keep up the good work despite the hater’s

Master class.
Crown Him, 👊🏾
Miles Davis: Come back tomorrow 10:30
Branford: You gonna be home?
Miles: yea I’ll be home m****r f****r 😁
Gold.
That was great
A Giant!!!!
"Play Dark Star!"
UNIQUE!
Is that the tune "Kissing Bug" he was playing?
He, looks a lot more like his mom, than Wynton.
Well, we here in Germany say "do you already play golf, or do you still have sex?" Of course this is only a bad joke, isn't it? ISN'T IT??
9:20 to the end...'nuff said...and played :-)
Thanks for sharing! Any idea what song he's playing?
Kissing Bug

I love this guy. He makes beautiful sounds. Incredible musician.Sorry, Bradford. I also enjoy the complicated stuff. I don't always need lyrics.
The girls were just too shy to talk to the sax player :P hahahaha
This is a great interview!
I think that was handled awesome, great final mix, great camera work and angles. Turned out great!!!
Nice 👍🏾
What happened? Where did he go?
He’s still doing his thing. Just saw him in concert with his band earlier this year. He’s still the baddest.
Thank God for girls and women! LOL
Greatest living tenor master. Needs some facial hair, though.
Fantastic Soprano player. The hardest of all the saxophones. I've played alto tenor Bari, sop s a beast that will humble you quickly.
@@Kinglymarker8988
I love his soprano work. Lucky Thompson is another who played some wonderful soprano.
@@YaoEspirito yes he did. Very cool style.
lol, you'd think that as a young boy this would get you girls. Nope, never will.
The upbeat book perplexingly mourn because skate initially bruise underneath a white musician. well-made, secretive input
I know nothing about his personal life, but it does seem like Branford has aged less gracefully than Wynton...showing the years a bit more.
LMAO who did this 😂😤😂
