One of the big differences between a seasoned artist and a mere mortal, is that the pro, more often than not, will salvage their painting, where a rookie will usually give up. Thank you for showing us the true struggle and concerns of producing a painting, Michael.
OMG. You are a watercolorist! The first watercolor of the mountains and sky is amazing. Most people when they start in watercolor are muddy and over worked, but yours are so fresh and lively. Please continue to explore this medium. Re: your oil painting; I think it came out better than you think. Great video as usual.
I really admire the way you simplify such complex scenes, the barn painting and watercolors at the end were amazing. It’s really inspiring me to get back to using that medium again :)
I'm loving this painting and in particular your sweet crazy way of not letting the imaginary critters loose. For those of us who live with barnheart this is delightful.
I always enjoy your videos but I'd love to see one on your watercolors! Beautiful paintings and I love hearing your thoughts as you talk through your approach.
Personally i thought that picture was great. Thanks for always stating your colour mixes, really helpful, great that you talk all the through explaining, great stuff, cheers.
Lovely. It’s fascinating to see your step-by-step process. I’d be happy with that painting. I especially love how loose it is-let’s my imagination go into the painting and wander around. 😊
hi Mike really enjoyed this video, subject matter was much more like the things I paint. It's good to try something new! Loved the other paintings you have done on your trip even the cow....Jan
Let you know what l think ? I think you’re just a little bit goofy ! 11:28 And l say that in the most endearing way. If l was about sixty years younger I’d wanna’ grow up to be just like you. That’s when l was painting signs in San Bruno. Lotta’ water under that Golden Gate !
Enjoyed this video especially as i think it sets more challenges than your normal coastal work. Good point about changing some of your colours especially when dealing with vegetation, foliage, grass, etc as it can all go quickly into a green mess. Change of subject matter is also good as it keeps you on your toes. Well done. Paul
Wildflowers, an old barn and distant hills Resulting in a painting that gives you chills A more detailed scene is better on a larger canvas A sketch, a study to stimulate the hypothalamus Checking angles and geometry, don’t ignore Race the setting sun, Katie bar the door Greens to blues, who knows how it really goes Check Pa-tre-on, it has more videos 🐮 🐄 I found this painting to be so beautiful! I love the scene. So peaceful. Your watercolors are absolutely amazing too. Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛
Lol that is an interesting farmers voice, the painting came out so nice! And enjoyed the extras at the end too! Happy Sunday, I got to get my paints out tomorrow and get to work!
I liked seeing how you did the thinner branches in the sky with light gray scrumbling. I struggle to see the shapes in something high contrast detail like thin branches against the sky. Even if I squint. I will try going in with light gray next time and see what happens. Thanks for the video!
Love your channel! You are real and said that you were not happy with the way the barn painting turned out. It is refreshing to share all your thoughts with your viewers. Just a thought --- if you made the barn further off in the distance, it would not be as much of the focus in the painting. Compositionally it might be better. Just a thought.
Great job, sir! Maybe you're not satisfied, but still this painting is pretty good, I think. I like it. Very nice watercolors! Cool nature. Have a wonderful day! Greetings from the EU!
Love the water colors. And I disagree about the painting. It’s really good. Very different from others you do. I believe it would be like your railroad track painting. A surprise to the artist. 🥰 what I love it that you have translated the decay and imperfection of the structure beautifully. Thank you for sharing this journey. 👏🏼
I like it. Thank you for mentioning what colors mixes you use. Very helpful to follow your process through this painting, especially the composition phase.
In spite of your reservations about this painting, I really like it! The looseness (loose but controlled) line and the composition are very pleasing. Interesting to watch it happen. Makes me want to give it a go.
Your slightly elevated vantage point gives interesting perspective and view of the play of sunlight on the roofs. Nice atmospheric perspective and pleasing composition and color. You nailed it.
I’m so impressed with your oil painting and the watercolour. You seem to have taken to watercolour quite quickly. I’m interested to know what you think about watercolour compared to oils. I’ve been painting with watercolour for over 6 years and I’m struggling to get to the next level. Do you think that your skills in oil have transferred over to watercolour?
Thanks Louise! My experience with oil painting has been helpful with composition. The actual painting process is very different as you may know! I have to spend more time planning my what I'm going to do with watercolor. I love both mediums. Maybe I'll discuss in a future video!
More watercolour!!! Your watercolours are great & it would be great to see some of those videos. Your handheld camera work is very enjoyable, kind makes it feel like we’re right there with you. Great channel. Thank you.
I think you saved that barn painting at the end… definitely like how the shadows and fence turned out.. plus the cow watercolor was excellent… maybe do a cow in oils?
For me it looks like you' re are off to a great start with this painting - kind of a roughing in that 'will be the under painting for the finished piece. Do you take reference photos for use when the light changes or even use later in the studio to treak the painting?
Really nice and loose and simplified - the oil painting and the watercolors. Love the trees in the barn painting, and the glow you get in all your watercolors.
I JUST discovered you and binged watched your videos yesterday! Great bingeing on a very rainy Massachusetts day! I really love your style of painting. Your instruction is wonderful, clear, and makes tons of sense. I'm 72 and started with pastels a few years ago. Adore!!! I can use your techniques to inform better pastel paintings for sure! Thanks!
HIya Michael! This is a timely video. A friend of mine asked me to paint a barn that was from her childhood. Unfortunately the photo she gave me is from the 70s and faded, and doesn't include the surroundings. Even though you're not satisfied with your painting, I love it - so loose, lots of texture, nice lighting and color harmony. Maybe this vid can help me figure out how to give her barn some new life and color! Thanks again for your videos!
I actually really like the way your painting turned out! One of the things that caught my eye was the way you added the different colors in the fence...really looked great.
@chamberlainpaintings We're always our own worst critics. 😉 I've always enjoyed your ocean plein air videos a lot, but it's also nice to see you doing some different things. If they don't turn out the way you like, just know we out here have still learned during your process. Thanks!
I wouldn’t say this painting isn’t something not to be satisfied about. It was good! Favorite parts being the grass color choice contrasting with the barn color. Only thing I’d say would been to have kept the scene treeless, I think it looked incredible simple and peaceful without the trees
@@chamberlainpaintings Michael, you capture the energy of light in the barn walls even though they are dark, they glisten. As if feels like the viewer can actually step onto the path the rising trees , so near , yet rise beyond the sky, and further the depth, center painting, as the path pulls below the roof over hang. The feeling of “” size “” in the depth is increased by the “” rise “” center in the mountain, with upward slopes , right, then greater , but subtle to the left, the highest point transfers a 3 dimension quality feeling for the viewer. The roofing hold the disappearing light, as an orange hue from evenings horizon. The barn yard, it’s fence joined, holds the woods at mid left and the grasses decorated at right. The sky seems brought towards and above , that’s from the young leaves, in the branches, everyone feels them “” growing “” in their transparencies. Michael, this painting, it is many times more beautiful than you may realize ❤️
I agree there seems to be something lacking in the overall design ... I really like the tonal variations and color mixes that you used ... Are there any watercolor plein air videos in the future?
It's a weak design. I knew it was weak but my options were limited and time was running out! I would have liked to have been closer to the barn but it the ground was too wet. I may do some watercolor videos in the future :)

Good one Michael. 18x24 is a lot of canvas to cover in a single session. I loved the look of that Knarley old tree off to your side.
Thanks Roger!
awesome compositions on watercolor and the oilpainting, too. Inspires me.
I really liked how you handled the fence.
If I were to narrate my work, there would be expletives lol ~Admire your zen style :)
I love your channel. I recently switched from acrylic to watercolor, and am enjoying it very much.
Liked them all but especially loved the cow!!! 🐮
