    Epoxy primer seals bare metal moisture won’t get under it. That’s why it’s used. You can prime it with epoxy primer and do your filler on top of it. Nothing wrong with starting with high build it works too but epoxy just goes one step further.

    I’ve never commented on you not using a mask. I worked my entire career not using a mask. I smoked for over 45 years, worked with asbestos ( when we didn’t know the damage it could do) and worked with some really nasty chemicals, all without a mask. I’m 65 haven’t smoked in just over four years. Quit first time I tried. I used the patch but that’s another story. My lungs are darker than a tire and I’m sure that the smoking had plenty to do with that but they may not have been as bad had I wore a mask more often. I have trouble walking a flight of stairs now days , please use a mask, any mask is better than no mask. I felt fine right up til I was about 59/60 then it started. Get ahead of it Chad please. ABS brakes are not installed for any kind of economy. They are to keep the wheels from locking up or skidding on slick surfaces and or panic stops. Brakes are most efficient at the moment just before lock up (skidding). ABS systems pump the brakes to keep them in that narrow power band of braking efficiency. ABS is never activated during normal driving conditions. They are activated by the wheel speed sensors & computer detecting millisecond differences in individual wheel speeds, outside of programmed parameters. Example: sensors detect rear wheels going 30mph and a front wheel is only going 5 mph (ABS calculates the front wheel(s) must be skidding or close to it). Additionally, if your front wheels are locked up, you can't steer.
    This is why any description of ABS usage for economy and the comparison to automotive coatings is kind of a stretch. My comments are meant to be constructive. I enjoy your videos and respect your work ethic.

      @@k.taylor262 I'm a licensed aircraft tech/ A&P ,ABS is one of the subjects I had to learn about, over decade before cars had them and was tested on by the FAA before Listening; I agree with Mr.Trucks explanation and I would like to add a bit to it. ABS was developed during WWII for military aircraft, and the systems they used were literally 100 times bigger and heavier than our current technology and their cost were way out of the automotive buyers budget then, it took over 75 years for ABS to be implemented on modern vehicles, it took time for our micro-chip technology to make it possible and cost effective. The system has no bearing or coloration to the subject matter/epoxies Chad was trying to explain.
      Chad is a great talent in the subject of body repairs and body-mods, but from this video and others I've noticed that when it comes to the drive-train and powerplants/ like we call them in the aviation i.e. engines on vehicle/cars from the past and today Chad has a lot to learn.
      My insurance company gives me a discount off my premium for having ABS, I think that's a plus, a great economic reason for my pocket and not the insurance company given me the discounted rate.

So PEROXIDE will rust steel quickly. 1st ingredient in the liquid hardener and the filler hardener is PEROXIDE. Thats why rust will form under filler. Epoxy is a great barrier

Most product descriptions and product warranties are worded so that in the event of a so called product failure the manufacturer always has a way to get away from being held liable because of misuse. Been there, done it. It's never their fault. You have to use products that you are familiar with and know what methods work. To each his own..

    Well, that was a strange explanation. Featherfill is sort of an epoxy, because it is mixed with a hardner. What it does not do is seal out moisture, and that is what kills the paint adhesion. It would work ok I am sure for several years, if it was done in a dry shop. But epoxy is designed to be a solid moisture barrier, so no water can get to the metal at all, and why it is used on bare metal. Anyway, it will be good for years, most likely. Sanding and polishing the metal really has nothing to do with the chemistry of paint, that is the mechanical bond. Most of his stuff is good, shows good technique and so forth, but the education as to the real reasons why is sorely missing.

    • @mikeripley3266

      I used to see shop pile on the feather fill on a rusty sand blasted floor and wet sand it for hours. It would build and fill and make the metal look new. even add a little strength but sadly the stuff was like a sponge and water would go right thru it. A couple years later the rust was back and huge sheets of the stuff would pop off. There was another product I think amax or something that was water proof but it sanded like rock.

      Fiberglass cars are a different animal glass is always moving feather fill is basically fiberglass it self it uses Mekp to harden it
      Two like kind materials go together better
      Butt!!! If you leave it to thick it doesn’t have glass strands to reinforce it it will crack
      You have to remove 90 % of it for it to last
      With the advent of urethane products they are so much better
      Why would you risk several hundred hours of work and use a crap product
      Yeah urethane cost more but it lasts and has uv properties that polyester doesn’t
      And it’s half the work of sanding concrete 😂

What I want to suggest is for this video, not just you doing the sanding, but many people at the same time doing it to show how fast it can go, retain the quality, and get it done faster while maintaining the value, as a way to make things smarter. It doesn't need to be just you, albeit nothing wrong, but could be better you both do it. Sort of to spark interest in the minds of viewers. Just different. I hope my words were of some useful thought. God bless. :)

      You re wrong ,you should’ve epoxied it first. Polyester isn’t the best for preventing rust that’s why you put body filler over epoxy primer (now )instead of bare metal before we knew better (though I’m not a big fan of today’s compromised formulas. Why are you not using a long block? Do you know what you’re doing?

    • @jimdavison4077
      @jimdavison4077 3 роки тому

      @@johnandersonjjr how are you going to get rust if you finish your work off right? Epoxy is for things that that may be exposed befor being top coated for a while. There is no need for using epoxy in this particular job. If it was going to be sitting around for weeks or months sure epoxy would be a good idea or if it was rusty metal that was blasted which is then more likely to rust again quickly. The thing about epoxy is its just an unnecessary layer and additional step in a job like Chad is doing. I used epoxy on a 72 mustang all on the underside and in the trunk and inside front fenders because it's hard and resists chipping and scratches and has good rust holdout. Also used it on bulk boxes cattle trailers and such.

    ABS refers too Anti-Lock Braking System and is designed to stop the brakes stopping the wheels turning and as such put the vehicle into a skid and out of control and into a collision.
    ABS is not an aid to save brake pads, discs( rotors) or any other parts.
    Cadence Braking is a where a driver pumps the brake pedal to slow a vehicle, reduce brake fade, wear and the risk of skidding.
    ABS and Cadence should not be confused.

    I have been painting for over 30 years, gone through alot of training from the paint manufactures, and done warranty paint work. All of the comments you make are about sanding for adhesion vs. chemical adhesion, the epoxy provides corrosion protection long term Featherfill is old school stuff brother direct to metal is the newest technology. We have some old sayings like "It may lay, but it won't stay" and "paint will stick to anything for a while". i like the shop you have and you tenacity/work ethic.

  • @jeffbannister2031
    @jeffbannister2031 3 роки тому +4

    I used Vinyl wash primer for years and resisted epoxy primer as long as I could. I now use SPI epoxy on everything. It's not all about adhesion but also corrosion resistance. Epoxy, bodywork then 2k high build. Problem is using epoxy isn't practical for production work. You need time for cure. I ask myself, if I am going thru all this time and money to restore an old car do I cheap out and save a few $100 on the foundation of the paint job on something you may spend thousands and years building? I will find somewhere else to save a few hundred bucks but it wont be by skipping epoxy primer. I love watching your videos daily, you are doing great work and admire your builds. I think you should reconsider epoxy on your work. I know old habits are hard to break, took years to convince me but I'm now a believer. Google SPI epoxy and do a bit of reading. Amazing stuff. You could blast 2 or 3 of your cars in a day and after epoxy leave them outside all winter and not worry about rust coming back. Ask yourself, would you build a million dollar house on cinder blocks to save time and money on footings? Your not wrong, it's been done for years.

      TY and WELL said sir. Yeah, so he's skipping out on the Epoxy ALL together and THEN, using Feather Fill ONLY during the early critical prep process of ALL things?... Polyester Primer. The next closest thing to 'ol Lacquer primer, far as soaking up water and HOLDING ONTO IT like a sponge until it starts rusting from the undersides on UP....SMDH 😒 Chad is a skilled DI-Yourselfer obviously and a good guy n all but yeah, WHAT a MISTAKE in HIS thinking (AND DOING on the body/prep process of his cars). My understanding of epoxy primer is the epoxy doesn’t let any oxygen in where regular primer does. So bare metal sprayed with epoxy primer can be left outside where if primer is sprayed over bare metal and left outside the metal can rust under the primer. Thanks for breaking it down!

    I know several guys who use Sprayway glass cleaner to degrease their cars before paint and it works great. Epoxy is nice for some things but not necessary on all surfaces. Best if your going to have it in the elements that will get moisture trapped before you paint. Millions of ways to paint.

  • @jasonevans6720

    Chad what I am going to say is not to undermine the quality jobs you do nor will I disagree with anything you have just said but I will add most primers Inc 2k primers to a degree are hydroscopic ie they absorb moisture so that moisture is now in direct contact with metal and metal can sweat with the moisture in the primer however epoxy is the most waterproof substrate we can use although not perfectly waterproof so I use it so I can give the best warranty I can, keep up the great vids and quality work.

    I liked your video but I am a little confused regarding epoxy primers and sanding. I heard you say that you don't have to prep the metal for epoxy primer. You made that very clear about the chemical bond. I must assume that means your metal has to be in very good shape prior to using epoxy. However, does that mean you cannot sand epoxy primer after it dries? What I mean is, if you find low spots after you use epoxy primer does that, mean you can't sand and fill? Thank you for your time.
