    why dont people look at their blades and see that carbides are cut square and not angled. sure the tops are angled but that doesnt even change when facing off the teeth, it barely diminishes the height. cool project. bad commenters.

      you did not mention the extreme vibration of a mini angle grinder that is not made nor ever was intended for such use. I sharpen my lawn mower with one, appropriate use.

    This is the best idea for a jig that I've found on UA-cam! It's simple and doesn't require a lot of special tools and materials to complete. Thanks for such a clever idea on how to create one.

      Because when we grind, the knife does not cut.

    A minor improvement would be to cut a slot directly below the angle grinder blade and adjust the guard to protect you from shrapnel coming straight at you if the blade disintegrates.
    I like the simplicity of this design. Will use it to sharpen my collection of blunt blades.
    Cheers

    If you check a few pawn shops you can find a cheap grinder for like 20-30$. That way you can just keep everything hooked up and dont have to worry about clamping and unclamping the grinder. Great video though. I will have to build one myself!

    Good video but check ya blade for angles, I have to wedge my grinder to about 20 degrees, have two jigs running towards ginder, one down the blade and one 90degress to it.
    This way you can do tops of the blade and the inside, matching the angle, every other tooth will point the opposite way, so you sharpen every other then flip blade and do ones ya missed.

    • @MartinWoodhead
      @MartinWoodhead  3 роки тому +3

      This is not an issue for the most common square ground blades. obviously if you want an angled grind you will need something more elaborate. I do not find it necessary to grind the tops. 😊

    Can you make the grinder to tilt side to side, then you can sharpen every second tooth on one angle then tilt to the other side and sharpen the remaining teeth. The blade will cut a lot cleaner that way.
    To check if it is sharp i scrape my thumb nail on each tooth as well. Cheers

    Shouldn't you have two stops, one not so important controlling the slide into the disc and one very important controlling how much you take off each tooth? Without the latter and because of the rake of each tooth by doing it freehand you will end up with different height teeth....

    • @MartinWoodhead
      @MartinWoodhead  3 роки тому +3

      It's a simple jig Jonathan, and it works. Neither are necessary for tungsten carbide tips, the amount of material removed is negligible. If you want to add stops add them! Or pay to have them sharpened professionally. Or chuck em away and buy a new one, which is what most do! 😊

    The teeth of the saw are alternated, one tilts to the left and the next tilts to the right. If they are all sharpened equally, the cuts will come out very splintered.

    • @MrMyneworld
      @MrMyneworld 11 місяців тому

      That topic is very interesting and true. What we could do is an adjustable angle holder for the grinder, and then sharpen the teeth that have a tilt first, and then readjust the angle of the grinder to touch up the other teeth of the saw. I want to try to make a removable device that allows me to sharpen without removing the blade from the machine, it is an exercise in imagination.

    Not trying to disparage your sharpening technique, however, alternating angles are required for every other gullet tooth. Your technique grinds every tooth on the same "flat" angle. Also the face of the tooth also requires angle grinding. Perhaps your technique works for you, but falls far short of correct grinding.

    Noooooooo!
    1. Diamond blades are made for about 150 - 300rpm not 10,000rpm angle grinder speed.
    2. Tungsten carbide teeth are meantvl to be sharpened very slow speed with, water for cooling so as not to heat and destroy temper.

    how cheap do you have to be to risk injury to your self like that.. if you going to make your own one then atleast make it rigid with a steel frame and a dedicated motor that runs at the right speed for a diamond wheel on that application.

      I have no idea where you think the risk of injury is! You must be risk averse in the extreme!!! 😊

    Very good . But maybe you also wear protective gloves, great Englishman that you are, because only you invented hundreds of rules for safety. What do you say?

    You will learn when that diamond wheel explodes in your face dangerous leave it to the people who service tooling for a living.
