I don't think he meant it in that way, to say that having a predictable life is not enjoyable but rather those who wish to have a life where they always want to know what will happen next (having control), are living in the past. The only way you can have a predictable future is having had similar experience in the past, which puts your present life in the past. The future comes unexpected and unpredictable, so take it as that and not an instance of your past.

Alan's lectures are what I always imagined philosophy courses would be like. Then I took philosophy courses and the teachers and other students used so much philosophical psychobabble and jargon that it seemed to me they weren't speaking a language I even knew. That sucked all the joy out of philosophy whereas Alan reintroduces a sense of wonder in going deep into the question of "Why?"

Lower level philosophy classes/courses were never intended to be lectures like this as that would just be debate or listening to someone else tell you their view. They're intended to teach you how a starting place to go about grappling these questions yourself. And, like a lot of subjects, the very lowest level is there to weed out the people who are just looking for an easy A or who aren't dedicated to learning the concept rather than giving them a taste of what's to come. Upper levels will have those kinds of debate.

I've found that spending too much time wanting things that aren't within your reach is also a bad idea. If you only focus on the main desire you have, and don't spend enough time focusing on the day to day things that can get you there, you'll end up frustrated, confused, and ultimately in a state of despair. Buddha said that desire is the cause of all suffering and in a way I've found that to be true. If you spend all your time wanting something in the future and don't live in the moment then what's the point of life?

I have been a backpacker since April 2019. I've always moved around the UK living and working in hotels, pubs etc. I had a fiance for 5 years and had a full time job that I hated, she had kids that were good kids but no, can't do that and my partner was amazing but I couldn't live that life.
I decided to give it all up and fit my whole life into a backpack. It's been hard going but it's my happy life, the life I was born to do. Live in a tent. I've been homeless many times in the past, drug addict etc it's because I wasn't living my happy life. Everyone has one but it's so hard to find it and actually take the leap to do it. I'll never give up this life no matter what. I have literally 18€ to my name but that 18€ More than yesterday. I don't need much just food, water and somewhere to sleep. Everything else is a WANT.
Don't give up your dreams and live the life YOU want regardless of others. Like he said don't think about the money. Think about the life YOU want and get it. I have a channel but can't monetize it but I don't care.
You only get one life... make it count for you before anyone else

katen Kyōkotsu this kinda threw me at the end. what does he mean here because we all are a part of 'god' so it's irrelevant if we don't want to be because we already are. does he simply mean we do not wish to be burdened with the responsibility that an omnipotent anthropomorphic god would entail?

I know I'm seeing this a year later, but I hope you still see this comment. The message from Alan Watts was amazing and 100% true. I really wish I could have spoken to this man and picked his brain about certain things. If I had someone like him talking to me while I was in high school, I'd probably be in a totally different situation than I am right now. Nonetheless, years later, I am honing in on what I truly want in life.
Not only was the message eye-opening, but your choices of clips for the video was absolutely perfect. They blended well and did not skew the message. You did a great job with this video. You should have so much more credit than you do!

What Do You Desire? Thought Provoking Motivation: By Alan Watts
    House Of Thought Media
    Improved English Transcript
What do you desire? What makes you itch?
    0:13
    What sort of a
    situation would you like
    Let us suppose
    0:21
    I do this often
    In vocational
    guidance of students.
    They come to me and
    say
    “We're getting out
of college and we have the faintest idea what we want to do!”
    0:27
    So
    I always ask the
    question
    What would you [like
to] do if money were no object?
    0:39
    How would you
    really enjoy spending your life?
    0:43
    Well
    It is so amazing as
a result of our kind of educational system
    crowd of students
    say
    well
    We'd like to be
painters we'd like to be poets
    would like to be
writers but as everybody knows you can't any money that way
    0:54
    another person is
what i'd like to live in out-of-doors life and ride horses
    0:59
    I said “Do you want
to teach in a riding school?”
    1:02
    Let's go through
    with it
    What do you want
    1:07
    when we finally got
down to something which the individual says he really
    1:10
    wants to do i will
say to him you do that and forget the money because
    1:20
    If you say that
getting the money is the most important thing…
    You will spend your
    life completely wasting your time
    1:25
    [you] will be doing
things you do not like doing
    1:31
    in order to go on
living that is to go on doing
    things you don't
    like doing
    that is stupid
    1:35
    1:38
    Better to have a
short life that is full of what you like doing
    than a long life spent
    in a miserable way
    And after all
    1:50
    If you do really
    like what you're doing
    it doesn't matter
    what it is
    You can eventually
    turn it
    You will eventually
    1:54
    become a master of
    the only way to
become a master of something to be really with it
    and
    then you'll be able
to get a good feel for what it is
    so we
    2:04
    don't worry too
much that that's the where everybody's somebody's interested
    2:08
    in everything and
anything you could be interested in you will find out what is
    2:13
    It is absolutely
stupid spend your time doing things you don't like in order to go on spending
    things you don't like
    2:20
    doing things you
    don't like
    and to teach our
children to follow the same track
    2:24
    see what we're
doing is we're bringing up children educating them to live the same
    2:30
    sort of life
pendant in order that hey may justify themselves and
    2:35
    find satisfaction
in life by bringing out their children to bring up the
    2:39
    actual to do the
    same thing
    so it's
    All wretch and no vomit
    It never gets there
    2:43
    and so, therefore
    it's so important
    to consider
    this question
    What do I desire?
    2:54
    well
    when we answer that
    question in a naive way
    we figure out
    that
    we want a desire
    what we want is to
    control everything
    [e.g.] to create
    girls that don't grow old
    [e.g.] apples that
    don't rot
    [e.g.] clothes that
    never wear out
    3:17
    Conveyance that get
from one place to another instantly so we don't have to wait
    power available to do
anything that you could see and do it just instantly
    like that
    to get this funny
    technological omnipotence
    but if you take
time out to think about that
    3:35
    and really go into
it with your full strength of imagination
    and find out whether
that's where you want to be …
    you will soon see
that is not what you want
    3:53
    because
the moment you have a situation where you
are really in control of things
    3:59
    that is to say in
which the future is almost completely predictable
    4:04
    A completely
predictable future is already the past
    You have had it
    4:09
    That's not what you
    want
    4:13
    You want a surprise
    you don't know what
that it is going to be because
    Obviously you wouldn't
    be surprised if you did
    what a pleasant
    surprise
    but like you say
    What sort of a
    surprise would be pleasant?
    4:31
    you can't really
    answer
    4:33
    because
you know if there are to be such things as pleasant
surprises there must also be unpleasant surprises
    There must be rude
    shocks
    So you're like
somebody taking a one of those wishing well boxes
    you know where you
    fish it
    and
    you bring out a
    package
    and
    you don't know whether
    you have got
a dead rat in it or
    a new camera
    then that's the way
    that's that seems to be
    5:01
    the thing that
    really excites people
    but quite certainly
    there comes out of
    this inquiry
    5:09
    feeling of real
disillusionment with the idea of power
to be in power | to
be in control | … | is not something that any sensible person
    wants
    people are
    frustrated in love
    people feel jilted
    with their children
    5:31
    There is a natural
tendency to human beings seek power
    and that's a very negative
things about having a bad time c power
    after frustrated in
    love
    you should try to
get back on the love people
    because
    nobody wants power
    you may say
    5:55
“That is shirking responsibility” or “That if
    you were a really responsible
    person you would go
out for power and try to use power to the best possible
    advantage…for the
    benefit of all”
    6:04
All right. What would be the benefit of all?
    Ask them “What do
you want me to do with his power”?
    6:14

    (Assume)
I'm dictator What would you like me to do?
    Well nobody knows
    because
    6:18
    they have not thought
    it through
    6:19
    they think of all
    sorts of short-range things
    …and these are
largely conflicting and confusing, because they're not well-thought-out
    But again when it finally
    comes down to it
    Nobody wants to be God

Alan's wise words have always helped me through some of my most difficult situations in life. He has a good balance between heart and mind and this can be felt in his passion and energy, and thank goodness that this sort of energy is contagious. I was at one of his seminars in the early seventies and he said something that changed everything for me. He said - "A planned life is a closed life - it can be endured but it cannot be lived". great philosopher, and he always had fun! have a great day wherever you are and whenever you are! God bless. college or not...doing what you love to do or want to do is not...realistic. I can't just decide to run a hotel chain and make bowling balls for a living because I'm a creator. it's more complicated then that. That's why you got people in college picking up part time jobs and more then likely full time jobs that they really don't care for. Being a grown up is really what I was always looking forward to. Momma said I could be anything so I decided to work at a factory. it took me quite awhile to decide that.

Most people who are truly achieving their purpose... you will never hear from them any philosophy. Because they actively practice the way and understand that the realizations that lead to achievement are totally personal and in essence verbally nontransmissible. Their very existence is a philosophical statement. As every act is, including thoughts and ideas, philosophical statement.
Intention is the seed from which any act derives its essence and character. And so when we witness the deeds of any independent action, we know what was the seed by the fruit. So it is, that by supreme practice of pure intent, and a faith that the vast majority of humans are in search of fundamentally the same goals, that we can unleash calm upon this world and cultivate an environment in which those who prosper through the exploitation of uncertainty will find it extremely difficult to succeed. Should we so intend.

Ultimate power is most beneficial to all when it is not being exercised. Ironic, isn't it?
Hence the freedom God (if you will) gives to us all. The omnipotent divine chooses to restrain from interfering.
You may do as you like, however profound or mundane it might be for you.
Here is the thing about pursuing only what you enjoy doing, though. You eventually reach the point of no longer enjoying it.
    It becomes rote.
So it is not the doing of a thing, the specifics of an experience, that is important.
Only the actual act of doing, whatever it might be, is.
All the rest is unpredictable change. And that is what makes your journey thru time worth while.
That, and the Freedom to come to your own understanding of yourself and the ineffable nature of the Divine presence within and without.

What do you desire? What makes you itch?
What sort of a situation would you like
Let us suppose-I do this often in vocational
    guidance of students.
They come to me and say
    “We're getting out
of college and we have the faintest idea what we want to do!
So I always ask the question
    What would you [like
to] do if money were no object?
    How would you
    really enjoy spending your life?
Well, it is so amazing as
a result of our kind of educational system
crowd of students say “Well, we'd like to be
painters, we'd like to be poets, would like to be
writers but as everybody knows you can't any money that way”
Another person says “I'd like to live in out-of-doors life and ride horses
I said “Do you want to teach in a riding school?”
    Let's go through with it
    What do you want?
When we finally got down to something which the individual
says he really wants to do I will
say to him, “You do that and forget the money.”
Because if you say that getting the money is the most important thing…
You will spend your life completely wasting your time
[You] will be doing things you do not like doing in order to go on
living. That is to go on doing things you don't like doing.
    That is stupid!
Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing
than a long life spent in a miserable way.
And after all, if you do really like what you're doing
it doesn't matter what it is.
    You can eventually turn it.
You will eventually become a master of it.
    The only way to
become a master of something to be really with it
and then you'll be able to get a good feel for what it is.
So we don't worry too much -somebody's interested
in everything and anything you could be interested in you will find out what is
It is absolutely stupid spend your time doing things you don't like in order to go on spending
things you don't like doing things you don't like and to teach our
children to follow the same track.
See what we're doing is we're bringing up children educating them to live the same
sort of life we’re living in order that they may justify themselves to
find satisfaction in life by bringing up their children to bring up their children
to do the same thing. So it's all retch and no vomit. It never gets there.
And so, therefore it's so important to consider this question
    What do I desire?
Well, when we answer that question in a naive way,
we figure out that we want a desire,
what we want is to control everything.
[e.g.] to create girls that don't grow old
    [e.g.] apples that don't rot
[e.g.] clothes that never wear out
Conveyance that get from one place to another instantly so we don't have to wait.
Power available to do anything that you could see and do it just instantly
like that. To get this funny technological omnipotence but if you take
time out to think about that and really go into
it with your full strength of imagination and find out whether
that's where you want to be …
you will soon see that is not what you want
because the moment you have a situation where you
are really in control of things that is to say in
which the future is almost completely predictable.
A completely predictable future is already the past.
You have had it. That's not what you want.
You want a surprise, you don't know what
that it is going to be because obviously you wouldn't
    be surprised if you did.
“What a pleasant surprise,” but like you say
What sort of a surprise would be pleasant?
    you can't really answer because
you know if there are to be such things as pleasant
surprises there must also be unpleasant surprises
    There must be rude shocks.
So you're like somebody taking a one of those wishing well boxes
you know where you fish it. And you bring out a package and
you don't know whether you have got a dead rat in it or a new camera.
Then that's the way that's that seems to be the thing that
really excites people. But quite certainly
there comes out of this inquiry feeling of real
disillusionment with the idea of power to be in power | to
be in control is not something that any sensible person wants.
People are frustrated in love, people feel jilted.
There is a natural tendency that human beings seek power as a substitute.
And that's a very negative thing, like having a bad temper.
After frustrated in love you should try to
get back on the love beam because nobody wants power.
You may say “That is shirking responsibility” or “That if
    you were a really responsible
person you would go out for power and try to use power to the best possible
    advantage…for the benefit of all”
All right. What would be the benefit of all?
    Ask them, “What do
you want me to do with his power”?
I'm dictator, what would you like me to do?
Well nobody knows because they have not thought it through
They think of all sorts of short-range things
…and these are largely conflicting and confusing because they're not well-thought-out
But again when it finally comes down to it
    Nobody wants to be God
