It is similar to what happen to some career soldiers after leaving the military. None career soldiers are only there for 1 or 2 years so they can quickly get employment else where, but a lot of the more career ones, mostly those in combat unit, their skills got little need outside the military and after been in the army for 10~15 years, they can be a bit too old to start over, some of them went to college in their 30s or even 40s to start a new career, some become cops or private security and some become hire guns.
Norse Viking warriors had the same mentality. When they got older, they tried to die in a battle even if they knew they had no chance of winning because they believed being killed in a battle was more honorable than dying of sickness.

A rōnin (浪人, "drifter" or "wanderer")[1][2] was a samurai without a lord or master during the feudal period (1185-1868) of Japan. A samurai became masterless upon the death of his master or after the loss of his master's favor or privilege.[3][4] In modern Japanese usage, usually the term is used to describe a salaryman who is unemployed or a secondary school graduate who has not yet been admitted to university.[5][6] *-The American Oxford Dictionary*
Ghost of Tsushima brought us all here. Other comments: some of the artwork are gorgeous. But the lack of reference and credit for the artists is a disservice to the great unknown artists who made it. So the Ronin challenged famous swordsmen in order to gain fame? That's really interesting. Musashi Miyamoto was probably having none of that.

no it’s not

I love the art in the episodes of this channel.
Ronin ARE still samurai. They’re just not gainfully employed by a daimyo (lord) for certain reasons.
I think it would be more accurate to say that they are still A WARRIOR
“Samurai” means one who serves. A ronin answering to no one serves himself and those he picks to assist.
Or exiles
