Mike Joy, Larry Mac and Darrel Waltrip in their primes are probably the most energetic booth we'll ever get in the sports history, really made some nostalgia listening to them
@uAaronn I could not agree with you more. Let's be honest, it's probably nostalgia That we remember we remember it happening and remember the moment For what it is.
I will die on the hill that Allen Bestwick is superior to Rick Allen in every every way and it's a damn shame that he isn't a mainstay in the booth anymore
I adore commentary, even if the announcers aren’t perfect, they’re voicing their passion and love for the sport right to us. Makes iconic moments even more special.
I remember watching “The Quest for SpongeBob” many years ago. The fact that the same guy who made that video many years ago, which still makes me laugh to this day, is making golden content now such as this is truly incredible. You knocked it out of the park again.
I love the influence Jon Bois has had on videos like this. It's very nice to have something seemingly so trivial have such an emotional impact just with good editing and great word choice. Emplemon, JimmyHighRoller, and now this channel have become my favorite channels in terms of presentation
"How do commentators join drivers in the Hall of Fame?" Because without Ken Squier it's unlikely NASCAR would have ever reached the heights it did in the 90s and 2000s, that's how.
I remember when I'd do races with my diecasts I would literally try and replicate the voices of Mike, Darrell, and Larry. My Waltrip impressions were spot on
A year late to this video but my dad told me a lot about Ken Squier. Being a native Vermonter it holds a special place in my heart to have such an important figure be from my little irrelevant state. Ken and my dad were buddies as they chit chatted at Thunder Road often, I never understood his impact on the sport until after he passed
Mike Joy is a legend, still my absolute favorite to hear call a race, despite fox's declining quality. This sport truly has been graced by some of the absolute best voices in history. I truly hope these giants in commentary are never forgotten and that their successors are able to retain this level of passion and skill. Fantastic video as usual EP!
"It's Earnhardt!" from the 2014 Daytona 500, "Slide job!" from the 2018 Chicagoland race, and "Take a look at what he did!" from the 2022 Martinsville race are my favorite lines ever.
I'm in the UK so for us Murray Walker is the beginning and end of motor racing commentary. But I've started to really gain a love for the NASCAR voices I've seen over the years as I've gotten into the sport. This was a lovely look back for those of us who need to learn the history and how NASCAR got to where it is now.
I'm in the US and Murray Walker is one of the best. (I remember watching F1 with US commentators and finding them boring and no real excitement. (Except for the ocassional one off with Mike Joy and Chris Economacki). Re-watching the European version with Murray Walker was like a completely different race which was exciting).
2:01 as an announcer, it is tough to contain your excitement on a game-changing call because you need the audience to understand you. And sometimes your brain will fry up trying to setup the finish and start stumbling or get words mixed up.
Allen Bestwick just so happens to be my second cousin, which made me so excited to hear him in the booth for SRX! One of the best to ever do it, for sure
Thank you for giving Mike Joy the recognition he deserves. A lot of fans today just lump him in with the rest of the poor broadcast that Fox has turned into in the last handful of years which is a totally unfair. The guy is a legend and has probably forgot more about automobiles and auto racing than most people know.
I'm happy to see this. The TV people get largely crapped on in the social media world (some of it deserved, most of it not). So I'm happy to see a video that is straight up appreciation of some of these legends. I've been watching since 93 and Mike Joy became my favorite calling BGN races on TNN when I was a kid. I realize his time is coming to end and I appreciate every moment that he's still calling big time races. Its been sad to see many online turn against him. I have a feeling 2024 might be the last year we have him in the Cup booth with a new contract starting 2025. I hope he gets to go out on his own terms and isn't bullied out by a Twitter mob.
i absolutely love the current nbc booth, even when they mess up (which is happening less and less over the years) the energy and excitement in the booth is only matched by the likes of mike joy, larry mac, and darrell waltrip when they were all in the booth
I think Bestwick is my all time favorite, especially from his work for Dirt to Daytona, but it’s been great to see Mike Joy in the booth with many different announcers and do so well. It’s unfortunate he’s starting to have a lot of slip ups, and I fear he won’t be in the booth for too many years to come.
Since MRN doesnt have the video to show the race, the announcers are forced to be more descriptive. And if you ever listen to it, they do an excellent job excellent job, makes the races exciting again.
Amazing production!! Another most excellent video sir! Thank you! Honorable mentions : Jeff Hammond Steve Byrnes Dave Moody Dr. Dirt Dick Berggren Buddy Baker
So glad someone made a proper video highlighting the announcers. As fans, we watch racing for... the racing. But it's the announces that make the broadcast truly come alive.
Larry Nuber did commentate on ESPN until 1989, quote from wikipedia, During a 1989 "Thunder" broadcast on ESPN, an on-air dispute between Nuber and fellow announcer/former racer Steve Chassey led to their dismissal from the network. IMHO, Bob Jenkins, Ned Jarett and Benny Parsons commentary were the best...
I think one of the voices in nascar around from 2000-2015 are the fans in some races they would just BLAST the fans for example the 2013 auto club finish and it has one of the most iconic quotes in nascar history “THEY TOUCH AND HERE COMES KYLE”
Allen Bestwick calling Dale Jr home in 2001 and 2004 makes my hair stand up EVERY time I hear it AB always rose to the occasion when the situation called for it And on Mark Garrow...the moment you used for him at COTA wasn't Mark but Brad Gillie
...wait, wait, Jenks did drag racing commentary? I knew Ken squier did...I knew that for CBS,but Jenks? Also, Paul Page did in fact do NASCAR, yes, and just about everything else in the 80s/90s, too, actually Paul got Jenks his start in broadcasting at ESPN, see Paul's ep on Dinner with Racers wher he mentions it. Seems back in the 80s/90s you'd get comentators doing a bit of everything, pit reporters too, Jack Arute went from NASCAR one week to CART then the ALDS then IROC it felt like back to back on TV, Gary Gerould got sent on assignment when he wasn't the radio voice of the Kings, and so on. I miss those days. I wanna hear Rick Allen calling something totally random like SRX or the Soapbox Derby. Murry Walker over here went everywhere, commentated on everything. in 94 he showed up in the SPN booth with Paul Page for a talk, he then went to Australia later in the year to cover the ATCC, was the voice of the Split in Aussie tin top racing (yes that was a thing an a rabbit hole all on its own....), rallycross, you name it he did it
I think that my favorite call from the current Motor Racing Network broadcast team has to be Alex Hayden with the hail melon. "Chastain did a video game move! Drove it and never lifted! Put it against the safer barrier in turn 3, never lifted all the way around the turn, and Ross Chastain passes Denny Hamlin! Ross Chastain is going to the playoffs!"
15:45 No way. I'm so happy that that's your favorite call. I like it so much, it's literally my ringtone on my phone right now. A recording of that call is what plays when my phone rings.
Allen Bestwick was the BEST at staying quiet and only giving a memorable call when it was the perfect time. Short of the great Ken Squire, Bestwick was...the best 😁
Another great Allen Bestwick call in the Xfinity/Nationwide Series: "Three wide in turn 4! A SQUEEEEEEEEEEZE TO THE OUTSIDE WALL!!! TROUBLE IN THE CORNER!! HARD, VICIOUS CRASH! WHO GETS THROUGH TO WIN THE RACE?!?!?!? Caution flag has just been called, the race leader is JAMES BUESCHER IN THE 30 CAR!!!"
9:07 - Yes Dick Berggren did join Allen Bestwick in the Booth, but it was for TBS in 2000. The NBC and TNT Booth from 2001 - 2004 was Allen, Wally, and BP
Also I hope that Harvick's inclusion next season will truly bring out Bowyer's potential. The idea that Bowyer who gave easily some of the best skits, interviews, and such to encapsulate the hothead fun of this Southern sport is failing to produce some great clips is inconceivable
Bowyer has had a shit hand dealt to him. He's been unable to create consistent chemistry with his costars due to the revolving booth, it's clear that he and Mike Joy don't have matching energies, and it's clear that Fox's producers prioritize goofiness and silliness in their style, and it puts Bowyer in a box where he has to be the "funny guy" in the booth (remember when Fox was pushing Bowyerisms in his first Duels broadcast?). If you listen to his commentary in 2019/2020, it's completely different from this season. He has the potential to become another one of the all-time greats in TV, but he's not in the right environment to foster that potential
Now we have Leigh Diffey in NBC's Cup booth full-time, and he started off with a bang with his call of Harrison Burton's Cinderella win at Daytona ("Jeff, your little boy has done it!"), and I'm so excited to hear more of him in the future! (Although anyone surprised by his great NASCAR commentary clearly hasn't watched nearly enough IndyCar in the past decade.)
I'd like to add that outside of the US the most iconic voice out there would be Tony Rivera. If you ask me, there's not a single commentator with as much personality, emotion, passion and talent than him. Look up Spanish broadcasts from the late 2000's and early 2010's, even if you don't understand Spanish, you won't regret it. Awesome video as always
My childhood is running through my blood watching this video I'm in tears your videos are so well made they invoke so much emotion in me and probably others. Thank you
Your videos have quickly become some of my favorites on UA-cam. Great content and love that you throw a little humor into the videos too. Keep up the good work!
I had goosebumps the whole time. It’s one thing to see the cars on track but the voices made it come to life! And the story of Bill Weber… was not expecting that. I grew up hearing him a lot on the broadcasts and then he was gone.

I got the honor of running into Doug Rice this last week at Las Vegas. One of my dreams in life is to be a NASCAR announcer so when I saw Doug I knew I had to get a picture with him and talk with him for a minute. When I tell you he was just as excited as I was for me not just to recognize him, but to also want to be where he is, I wouldn’t be lying for a second. MRN also had a turn announcer named Fritz Duda, he later ran Riverside International Raceway until it was closed in 1989 and turned into a shopping mall
My mom used to work at a restaurant that Mike Joy semi-frequented. She said he was a really nice guy, i think my dad met him one time there too. Small world
Been binging your vids since i found you from your last upload, the production and storytelling are incredible and you deserve 40x more subs. Keep it goin

Absolutely.
Replacing Bestwick with Weber as lead commentator is still one of the biggest mysteries of my mid-2000's childhood.
I remember watching “The Quest for SpongeBob” many years ago. The fact that the same guy who made that video many years ago, which still makes me laugh to this day, is making golden content now such as this is truly incredible. You knocked it out of the park again.
Coming back to this after the passing of Ken Squire, RIP legend
I feel as if a couple days ago marked the end of an era for NASCAR with Ken Squier’s passing. Rest in peace to a commentary legend.
I love the influence Jon Bois has had on videos like this. It's very nice to have something seemingly so trivial have such an emotional impact just with good editing and great word choice. Emplemon, JimmyHighRoller, and now this channel have become my favorite channels in terms of presentation
"How do commentators join drivers in the Hall of Fame?"
Because without Ken Squier it's unlikely NASCAR would have ever reached the heights it did in the 90s and 2000s, that's how.
Not gonna lie, seeing Mike Larry and Darrell all hug at the end got me chocked up. I miss the trio I grew up listening to😭

Alan left his mark on NASCAR. You see it every race, when the winner does ANOTHER POLISH VICTORY LAP! That's respect.

As an Alabama football fan, Eli Gold is a legend. Gonna miss having him say "Touchdown Alabama" this season
Let’s not forget the 2012 Daytona 500 when the unthinkable happened when Montoya hit the jet dryer: Darrell Waltrip was at a loss for words.
Getting DW to be speechless is a massive accomplishment
