Well done! I was thinking of starting a project like this, but you guys are already so far ahead. May I suggest that you add dye packs or dye spray to mark the ground where the mines are. This could save lives in between the detection and removal process. Good luck.
Not quite, this is not a breakthrough in a fundamental science that can be detrimental to crafting models. Magnetometers are already invented, AI is already invented. Just putting already invented technologies in a new use case is not worthy a Nobel prize. Something that is, for example, when Nuclear Fusion reactors get up and running to produce viable power.
Incorporating Lidar technology with your work will definitely make it easier in finding landmines especially those that are hidden in thick vegetations. It will be of great help for our defenders in Ukraine in mapping up minefields especially now that they are on their counter offensive. Good luck and more power to you guys! 🙂🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
1:35 - They're using COCO pre-trained weights. I didn't know that dataset has land mines. Wouldn't it be better to make their own custom dataset of landmines? Also consider getting data of a land that is similar to rasputitsa, imagine Ukrainians saying that the drone doesn't give good results of a muddy soggy land.
This is a great step towards advanced mine clearance efforts. However, mostly mines are underground and detecting them is difficult with Drones. But for detecting Explosive Ordnance leveraging drones and AI is perfect.
I have often pondered on using drones 4 mine sweeping, maybe metal detector for older mines and possibly drop a weight of sorts from the air at a "safe" distance to detonate?idk just a thought im not a soldier or a mine expert hell idk much abt drones either, just seems a no brainer..save lives.RESPECT 2 these fellas for trying 2 make it a safer better world.paving the way.
I'd like to hear how they have progressed since this was published. I am working on a drone-based landmine-detection project as well, using nuclear fusion technology.
Absolutely incredible work these young men are doing. A Nobel Peace Prize should be awarded to them. All governments should be investing millions of pounds £££ into developing this drone technology.
Nothing new. Massoud Hassani was making the same mine-sensing flying drones at least 5-6 years ago . The only difference here is the use of AI, and they didn't invent the AI.
I think they could install metal detector on the dron and scan the grand. Evan more, I wonder if grand penetrating radar can be installed on dron. There might be interesting application that may spur to others fils not connected to demining.
@@miroslawkaras7710 I agree. Ground penetrating radar is a proven application in the detection of anti-tank and anti-personnel mines located 5 - 15 cm underground. By installing GPR equipment on the drone, mines can be detected fast and autonomously using seismic waves, saving lives in the mine-ridden areas.
In Africa, specially Somalia we need this drone 30 years of fighting different kinds of weapons you know every where you stand there's high risk of the remaining of that weapons like motor, mines and other weapons. There are children that lost their hands, eyes, legs even their life. It's really so sad, but still there's hope to save the remaining if we get something like this.
This is nothing new, ground penetrating radar technology has been mounted on helicopters to discover mines dug as deep as 10 metres, and I think Ford did something 10 years ago with a drone and ground penetrating radar as well, but the problem is these are COSTLY and time consuming technologies to implement, ground penetrating radar is also quite big and consumes a lot of power in fact the more juice you give it, the better it is at detecting. So its very impressive to see others trying cheaper methods of detection, but it appears they are not detecting mines that are dug very deeply, and that could be a huge limitation.
Hundreds of millions of mines deployed!! Indiscriminate and cruel, and can kill innocent civilians. Isn’t this by definition a terrorist act? Aren’t the manufacturers and deployers of mines then terrorists themselves?
Interesting idea. On unseen data, you've trained your CNN to what degree of accuracy? Would you walk into a known minefield guided only by a map produced by your CNN?
Would you be able to tell the temperature difference between two shipping containers? If one had people in it would there be a significant detectable temperature difference?
It depends on the situation. If the people inside the container are still alive a temperature difference might be detectable. Africans attempting to travel inside a container into EU have given up. Due to an incredible high death ratio (suffocation).
These guys are doing a tremendous job! Risk reduction is priority #1 in cleaning and later clearing minefields. Adequate surveys with drones is a very important improvement of extinguishing active Mines. Local surveying fixed points will do nicely - No need for GPS. 2 Fixed points in the Cleared (=SAFE) zone and only 1 fixed point in the Uncleared (=UNSAFE) zone. Placing this last fixed point is VERY DANGEROUS. After the surveys, AT mines should be detonated by multiple drones dropping RGD-5 hand grenades. Drones dropping small cluster capsules will reduce the amount of AP mines. Now a second drone survey will be needed to locate the remaining mines. Depending on the Second Survey sappers could be allowed in the minefield to clear it. Too many remaining mines? > New drone attacks on mines ! Pls. notice that Drone-detonating AT mines clears the way for Flail-tanks (tractors). AT mines wear out flails, AP mines are no match to them.
Nothing new. Massoud Hassani was making the same mine-sensing flying drones at least 5-6 years ago . The only difference here is the use of AI, and they didn't invent the AI.
"The US has invested over $4.2 billion since 1993 to clear landmines and explosive weapons of war (ERW). They also secure and dispose of excess small arms and light weapons (SA/LW) and munitions in over 100 countries and territories. ... The Senate Appropriations Committee approved $264.103 million for humanitarian demining in the 2024 budget."
@@c.van.anderson USA spends more than $785 billion on their military each year, so $4.3b is just 0.5% of the ANNUAL budget - but spread out across 31 years from 1993 to today. In 31 years they've spent about $20 trillion in today's dollars on war spending. Thank you for demonstrating just how outrageous that is.
This has very limited potential, and only useful in evaluating and confirming presence. If this is the methodology used to determine if a location is free of mines, someone will die.
The Azerbaijani lands in Karabakh are polluted with tens of thousands of landmines by Armenian and Russian armies within 30 years of occupation.420.000 Azerbaijani people cannot return back to their liberated towns and villages because of that. Would this technology come to Azerbaijan? Mines keep on killing civil workers reviving destroyed infrastructure in Karabakh.
sad to say but Land mines are useful prevent invasions, If Ukraine had put enough land mines in the first place there would not have been a Russian invasion. Eventually that is what they will do just like the Russians who are working hard to make a future frontier out of the current frontline... if there is an efficient way to remove land mines, it will be more easy for the strong thug nations (eg Russia) to invade the weaker nations. Right now one thing is sure, those young guys are not alone to work on demining tools.
Fantastic work! These guys are a credit to humanity.
You worded that so perfectly.
Amazing. So proud of these young men. God bless their efforts. This technology and work will save thousands of lives.
Their passion and care for humanity is super touching. I agree with nominating them for a Nobel peace prize!

LiDAR is only useful at the macro level, and only for large items. Magnetometry or EM is required to locate individual UXO or landmines.
Touching to see your dedication ...there is hope for humanity.

Mines buried too deep do not get triggered. AT mines are not to be buried deeper than 1 ft (30 cm).

I'm sure they moved to radars that penetrate the dirt surface by now.
if you detect the mine, you should it also be possible to disable the mine by dropping a (small) object, that falls on the mine, right ?

Can they be used at this moment at Ukraine battle front? Please

How much of the Pentagon budget is going into land mine removal? 100 million land mines in 60 countries means however much it is it's not enough.
