Dragon Force 65 and Compass Racing on Sail Wars!
Sail Wars features races for the following classes: Soling, DF65, DF95, US1M, ODOM, IOM, SeaWind, EC12, as well as many other RC Sailboats. Check out our UA-cam home page. We have playlists for many different kinds of RC Yachts. Contact us if your club would like to be featured on Sail Wars!
Have 2 compass boats that we sail in our pool racing with 3 fans blowing. Move the servo linkage to the furthermost hole in the rudder horn, balance the rig tuning to omit weathering helm under sail, flip the righf top toggle switch to the 3rd or furthest position away from you and the boat should steer very well. We operate in a confined swimming pool and they turn very well with slight momentum. The problem seems to be in the transmitter itself as far as turning and sheet control accuracy is concerned. A new radio should smooth out the boat well. Also, there was a mention that a part was missing? The mast crane is composed of "L" shaped metal bar that plugs down in through the plastic mast crane. There you will attach the stern stay and apply necessary tentsion for tuning. The directions are poor and are for the larger Hurricane boat as ive found which is rigged different. Hope this helps👍
You can watch all the videos to learn what happens.
I have a Compass it works perfect. But after 3 years I had to replace rudder servo. $5 . It is slower than a DF. With a A+ rigging. I bought a A+ rig and installed it very easy to do. Under 50.00 dollars for everything How the two boats are equal.
We haven't had the same luck. You will see in our next Compass video we replace a few parts and the sail winch goes out. How did you do the A+ rig for $50? A DF65 sail and rig plus shipping costs about $100. Do you have a better place to buy from?
We have a Compass and no issues with the rudder servo so far. Maybe they fixed it in newer production runs. The rudder is a bit small though but still completely sufficient as long as the boat somehow moves forward. Considering purchasing a DF65 as our 2nd boat though.
Have fun.
Had a Compass tried it against some DF 65's in the pond where the local club races . Actually did manage to beat a couple tail enders in the DF 65 fleet.
What would you say your skill level is? Would you have done better with a DF65?
@@sailwars This was my first race the two that I beat had sailed into holes. I probably would have beat them by more with a DF 65> Sadly a few days later the on/off switch malfunctioned and I ended up sending it back got a DF 65 this year looking forward to sailing it
Ah yes, Wickham Park. I grew up near there stomping through creeks and such as a kid. Probably no gators due to all the activity but since this is Florida, never say never. With that in mind I have a couple suggestions for you and anyone else (like me) who may have to rescue a boat along the shore. I sail my DF at a lake in a park in Pinellas county where I’ve seen gators and had to do this far more than I care to admit.
a) ALWAYS wear footgear. There’s no shortage of crap (broken glass, sharp shells or rocks, etc.) that will cut your feet to ribbons. You’re FAR more likely to encounter that than a critter ESPECIALLY in a public park.
b) instead of a phone take a pole of some sort to poke around in front of where you’ll be stepping. I use an extendable boat hook which also helps me to snag the boat. If there’s some sort of nasty critter you’ll disturb them and most of the time they’ll prefer to get away if you give them the chance. If they’re asleep or just hanging out having them know about you BEFORE you get there will typically yield a much happier ending.
Also, if there’s a hole or drop off you’ll know before you get to it and hopefully save yourself an unwanted dunk.
Happy sailing!
No one has been eaten yet.
FYI the lake the model power boats use actually does have gators in it and a lot of our waterways are connected even though most people don't realize it
Any body of water in Florida can have gators in it.
I bought the compass as my first boat and it would not steer compared to a DF95 a sailor allowed me to sail. I tried increasing the ‘throws’ on the rudder both at the servo arm and rudder arm without much improvement and in fact the rudder arm when past the middle and reversed sides which was not apparent until I managed to retrieve the boat from the other side of the lake where the wind had blown it. I then changed it to a DF65 rudder, I needed to cut a few mm of the top of the rudder so it would reach the control arm through the hull. It made it much better. Then the switch failed so I returned it to the shop for a refund.
I now own a DF65 and a DF95 both sail well.
You had a lot of the same problems we had. Did you watch all seven of the Compass videos?
FYI Sandy. Ive been feeding that gator filets of MAHI for a while now. if we get back on that lake you might want to consider repainting your boat. LOL
You're too funny!
What is with your head sail? Is it supposed to be attached at the tack or where it’s set in this video?
Just building it per the manufacturer's instructions. So many things had to be changed... Watch all seven videos in this series.
That's great that you highlight the course layout - much clearer now!!
Is there really aligators there?? From my very limited knowledge of geography in Florida I know they can get semi-comfortable in an urban environment. I know it's not Florida but if the climate and geography supports them then - I'd wait patiently and still have 4 functional limbs.
There is always a chance of an alligator being in any area of water in Florida. I have never seen one in this pond. I'm sure there have been sightings.
@@sailwars Ok - I know this sounds like a stupid question, but what is the most likely outcome of an alligator encounter? Are we talking a nip, a bad gash, mauled limb, lost limb, or - the last time you ever ever do anything?!?!
It all depends on the size of the person and size of the Gator. They seem to be a real threat when they get up around 5+ feet. A large gator can take a grown man down in the water. Smaller gators can take a nip out of you. Children and dogs can be attacked by smaller gators. Most ponds that are used for sailing in Florida won't have gators and if a larger one wanders in then animal control is called in to remove it. During matting season gators walk all over the place and can even be found in swimming pools.
Unfortunately in Brazil, we cannot bring a DF65, due to the very high cost of shipping, so I will make the replacements, suggested by you, change the rudder, the rudder servo, (which one do you suggest? How many kilos?), the radio is easy.
Stick with the servos that come with the boat until they break. Then, replace them with something else that fits.
😮
Hi
Hello, I'm thinking of modifying the rudder of my compass, and making it the size of the Dragon Force DF65, the one in your video, would it be possible to inform me of its measurements, width and length in cm? I would appreciate it if that is possible.
I would find someone who can ship to you. It's a lot of work to make your own rudder. Can you purchase a Focus 3 there?
just got a compass and no rudder issues. the thing flies on my back pond
We are so happy for you. Ours was a piece of junk.
that’s super unfortunate. what other vessel would you recommend with a comparable price. i figure you might have gotten another one as a “replacement” to the compas.
We have about 30 boats now. The DF65 is a much better buy. A Focus 2 is a nice boat for the money if you're just sailing for fun. I'd suggest finding a used DF65. Look at what your local clubs sail.
We want to hear back from you after you have sailed a few times. Ok?
@@sailwars will do👍🏼
Do Joysway or RC yachts have a distributor in the EU? Then we wouldn't get stiffed for customs duty as we currently do.
Yes. www.radiosailing.co.uk/
@@sailwars The UK left the EU on 1st January 2021. Now we have to pay customs duty to get it from the UK to EU.
Maybe do a search on Google to see if there is a supplier near you?
@@sailwars Thanks - In the end I got them from the UK anyhow, I've built one of the two, test sailed it last week and loved it. Seems to struggle tacking in strong winds although I did have the large set on the boat.
I would have no problem making a rudder, I make fiberglass boats as a hobby, I'm trying to buy via the website, and I'm waiting for a response from them, but it would be good if you sent me the measurements of the DF65 rudder, so that I could at least have a chance to manufacture for my compass.
We sent them in a reply to your other comment.
Sorry, I didn't realize that you had already sent the data, thank you very much, and I hope I can still buy a DF65.
thanks for making these comparative videos, I managed to buy the rudder, and a few more DF65 upgrades to install on the Compass, I found them in a store in Australia, Hobby Warehouse, so now it's time to wait.
Great! Keep us updated! We also have a Facebook page.
I don't know who does the editing for the clubs videos but those pop ups are stupid and lessen the quality of the video
We are thankful to just have a volunteer take the 6 to 8 hours to edit the video. Send us your phone number, and we'll see if you can edit a video any better. I'm serious. We really love our volunteers. We aren't trying to make money off selling things. Everyone at Sail Wars is just trying to help the hobby. You don't like pop-ups? The next viewer does. At least someone is trying to help the hobby. It's great that you have subscribed. We appreciate that. Please like and share every video so we as a sport can grow.
