Hello! Perhaps we can do a future episode on the bedding varieties of kale 😃 Meanwhile, you can still apply much of what we discussed to those varieties. Just look for shorter ornamental varieties, check the days to maturity to know when to start, only sow one seed per block or cell, space the plants further apart in the garden, and there is no need for support netting. Thanks so much for watching, and have a lovely day! 💚
I’m a little late to the show but I do have a question. I actually grow the pink kale for Christmas and early spring since I’m in Phoenix. December 15 is our first frost date and it can actually be in the 90s through November. But I have a question about the plant spacing. Lisa said if started in mini blocks which I do that the spacing would be 3 inches apart. By my calculations that 16 plants in a square foot. That seems so crowded. Is that correct? I can see 4 inch spacing which is nine plants per square foot but 16 seems a lot. Hope you see this. I do calculate my plants per square foot because I have limited growing space.
I planted ornamental kale in the fall, it is April now and they still look good. They now have a yellow & purple flower growing out the top that’s really attracting bees. Is this called going to seed? Can I harvest and plant the seeds?
I ended up pulling mine out. They got really tall which I didn’t understand was supposed to happen but they got infested with aphids. I’m wishing I tried harder to save them now.
Would love to hear more about growing bedding varieties!
